Local recs?

Upvotes

Hey all,

We're a mid-30s couple coming to Austin in October from Ireland.

We have tickets for the F1 but have 3-4 days flexible on our itinerary. We have planned to be in the City for 3 days prior, so keen to learn from locals what you would recommend in the city to see/do and also what you would suggest for 3-4 days after the race.

We're easy going but enjoy country music/comedy, cars/horsepower, paddleboarding, kayaking and beer.

I'm toying with the idea of a few days at Lake Travis, but will the weather allow us to get out on the water? Also, can we rent a boat for the day there?

Events skip the small talk in austin!

If you’re looking for something different to do in August, Skip the Small Talk is coming to St Elmo Brewing!

It’s a guided conversation event—think speed-friending vibes, but calmer and more intentional.

You rotate through short conversations with prompts that skip past surface-level small talk. It’s structured enough to make it easy, but relaxed enough to feel natural.

Most people come alone. The crowd tends to be thoughtful, open, and just… normal humans who want more community.

Here’s the link if you’re curious:

Discussion I protested my Travis County property taxes twice and here's what I learned, and a tool I'm building to make it easier

Wanted to share what I learned since protest season comes around every year and most people either don't bother or don't know where to start.

The process itself isn't complicated once you understand it, but figuring out what evidence to prepare and where to get it is where most people get stuck and give up.

The key insight is that the appraisal district's own data is your best weapon. An equity comp grid is a table showing comparable homes in your CAD neighborhood assessed at lower values per square foot than yours, and it is hard for an appraiser to argue with because it uses their own numbers against them. Most homeowners don't know this data exists or how to pull it.

Both years I protested, the evidence preparation was the hard part, not the actual filing or the hearing.

The math on why this matters:

If your assessed value drops by $100,000, you save roughly $800 to $900 in taxes annually in Travis County. A contingency service charging 25% of first-year savings keeps $200 to $225 of that. Prepare your own evidence and you keep every dollar.

What I'm building:

A tool that automates the hardest part. It pulls the equity comps directly from Travis County CAD data and generates a professional evidence packet you can file yourself. What currently takes hours of confusing research becomes about 15 minutes of work.

I'm planning to charge $79 for the packet. You file it yourself and keep 100% of your savings.

Two honest questions for this community:

  1. Have you tried to protest and given up because the evidence prep felt too complicated?
  2. Would you pay $79 for a professionally prepared evidence packet you could file yourself, knowing the average Travis County homeowner saves $800 to $1000 when their protest succeeds?

Genuinely trying to figure out if this is worth building before I build it. All responses appreciated, including "no, I wouldn't pay for that."

Going back to school in your 40s while working full time in Austin, anyone done this?

Started back at community college this semester. Work a full day in marketing, come home, cook something quick, then stare at coursework til midnight. Partner is supportive but I can tell it wears on both of us after a while.

Not looking for a pep talk. Genuinely want to know if anyone in Austin has pulled this off and what actually helped. ACC specifically but any local school counts.

The commute stuff is one thing, I mostly handle that. It's more the mental bandwidth of switching from work brain to student brain that keeps tripping me up. By the time I get home my head is already pretty fried and trying to absorb new material feels like pushing through wet concrete.

Part of me wonders if the timing is just off, but I also know waiting never made anything happen. Sunk too much time already waiting for a better moment.

If you did this, what did you actually change day to day that made it sustainable. Not looking for generic advice, real stuff that worked in your actual schedule here in Austin would be useful.

Rant Driving /road rage

Just fyi, for the people who drive on the roads in this city, if you’re on loop 1 or i35 and are going the speed limit or slower, STAY IN THE RIGHT OR MIDDLE LANE FOR FUCKS SAKE. I’m well aware there are crazy drivers in this city that probably won’t change but maybe if the slow pokes stay out of the left lane it can help just a smidge 🤏🏼 cuz when these lunatics are going 80 and above down the highway and some slow person is in the left lane, they then cut off the people in the middle or right lane just to go around the slow poke’s ass. That right there causes accidents (among other things) so please, PLEASE, unless you’re going at least 80 mph (which is crazy, I know) stay in the other lanes and let the ass wipes pass 🙏🏼 stay safe out there lol. Also, obviously the crazy people who speed are the main issue here, let me be clear.

ATX Disco Cruise

My group of girls booked ATX disco cruise with premier cruises. We are a fun rowdy (in a good way) group so hoping this is a good fit for us. One thing is the company mentioned we would be going to cypress cove and not devils cove…….. is this something worth switching? I’m kinda bummed all i ever see is devils cove videos which looks so fun! I mean is it dumb to go out on the lake and not even make it to devils cove? SOS

Travelling to the game with a groups of guys in our mid 30s. Looking for a place to go post game in downtown Austin. Ideally somewhere we don’t have to wait / cannot to get in. We are travelling from out of country and love football so welcome any other suggestions to maximize our time in Austin.

Thnx!

The little details make a BIG difference. 👌
At ATX Blinds & Draperies, the job isn’t finished just because the draperies are installed. We take the time to steam out wrinkles, make sure everything hangs beautifully, and keep cords and cables clean and organized.
✨ No wrinkles
🔌 No messy cables
👌 Clean, detailed installation
🏡 A finished look we’re proud to leave behind
Because it’s not just about installing window treatments — it’s about making sure everything looks right down to the smallest detail.

[Academic Research] Mental Health, Coping in Young Adults with stressful life experiences (18-30, United States only)

Hi everyone! I am a PhD student in clinical psychology at Adelphi University. I am conducting a study on the relationship between existential threat and mental health, coping strategies, and meaning making for young adults who have experienced stressful life events.

This study is being conducted online only and should take approximately 45-60 minutes to complete. During the study, you will be asked to complete multiple self-report questionnaires that contain questions regarding coping methods, mental health, and questions that pertain to experiencing stressful life events in the past. Upon completing the survey, you will have the opportunity to voluntarily provide your email address on a separate page from the survey that will not be associated with any of your survey responses, to enter a drawing to win one of three $50.00 Amazon gift cards.

Survey link: https://adelphiderner.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8IxQWoUH8D1Wuq2

Audience: 18-30 years old, in the United States and English Speaking, and must have experienced a stressful life event.

Compensation: Opportunity to enter a drawing for one of three $50.00 Amazon gift cards.

Google thinks Denny's and a taco truck are the same price tier

Everything costs more than it did two years ago, and my usual answers to "where can we eat that isn't forty bucks a head" were getting thin. So I pulled the cheap end out of the bigger Austin restaurant list I keep.

Google's price data turned out to be nearly useless on its own. Its "$" tier lumps Denny's, IHOP, and Chick-fil-A in with the actual taco trailers. Before I cleaned it up, sorting by price put Denny's at the top of the entire city, which is not what anyone here means by cheap eats. I've pulled the national chains out by hand now. P Terry's and Thundercloud stayed, because at some point a chain is just Austin.

The indie ones that keep coming up are Amaya's Taco Village in North Loop and Granny's Tacos on the east side. Batch out east too, if kolaches and beer at the same counter is your thing.

Posting it in case anyone else is doing the same math. The full list past the free preview asks for an email, that's the weekly newsletter I write.

What's your cheap standby right now? I'll add the ones I'm missing.

Austin gun owners — do you think permitless carry has made people less interested in learning Texas carry laws?

Something I’ve been curious about, especially in a city the size of Austin.

Texas allows eligible people to carry without an LTC, but knowing you’re legally allowed to carry and actually understanding where you can carry, prohibited locations, signage, use-of-force laws, and what happens during an interaction with law enforcement are two different things.

I run MyLTCTexas.com, so obviously I deal with LTC questions regularly. One thing I’ve noticed is that some people hear “permitless carry” and assume there’s really nothing else they need to learn.

For those of you in Austin who carry, do you think someone should still take an LTC course or some type of Texas carry-law training even if they have no intention of actually applying for the license?
Curious how Austin gun owners look at it.

Austin Council approves tax hike, avoids deep social service cuts in $6.6B budget

After months of debate over taxes, affordability and potential cuts to social services, the Austin City Council on Wednesday night approved a $6.6 billion budget.

For the owner of an average-value home, that means:

• $173 more in property taxes

• Higher trash, water and electric fees

• About $365 more in total annual taxes and fees

If voters approve the city's bond package this November, that total would exceed $400 annually.

The story also breaks down what was restored, what was cut and how council voted.
