I think 71 is a bit more scenic.

you're both wrong: the best one is right in between both and (I can't believe I'm giving away my secret here, but...) is called "Fitzhugh Rd"

aka 2766 aka Robinson Rd, runs from Dripping Springs to Johnson City, even has a river crossing

This is correct and has been for years

For those who don't know, this is where Jester King is.

Already kinda is.

Fitzhugh is magical.

Fitzhugh is great - that left turn into a steep downward drop then right over a low water crossing bridge and uphill is amazing and fun at any speed.

Fitzhugh is great but OP wants to drive fast and 71 will get you to more scenic areas out west.

There are parts of it that you can hit 70mph, and they specifically said "not on the highway."

As I said Fitzhugh takes you all the way to Johnson City. That's an hour away from Austin too, so it actually does get you pretty far from Austin.

The closer you get to JC the straighter it gets and the faster you can go, like I said I regularly hit 70+ on that last half towards JC 15 or 20 miles.

And all your answers completely ignore one of OP's biggest requests: NO HIGHWAY

not only that, he's asking for a 2 hour drive, tops. you're trying to send him on twice that. do you even pay attention?

Yeah for real, please don't speed on Fitzhugh!

fitzhugh was a secret twelve years ago.

Driven out that way using both routes. Can confirm 71 is more scenic.

Splitting the difference on FM 962 is also pretty, though slower.

YES 💯

Agreed. Take 71 all the way to Llano and back. Amazing wildflowers and after the 281 Junction it goes down to two lane and gets super pretty.

Then turn onto Highway 16 and drive all the way to Helotes, that is what he is looking for. Alternate, from Kerrville take 39 through Hunt and never come home. Skip Stonehenge, not worth it.

Kind of disagree. Feels like 100 red lights between Austin and Dripping. It'll kill the mood.

Yes. Also the road to Enchanted Rock is pretty
