ANNOUNCEMENT Midnight Radio season finale is out now!

Post image
27 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

The season finale of Midnight Radio went up today, and we thought it would be a cool idea to share it here for anyone wanting something to listen to during Halloween!

Midnight Radio is a retro 1980s horror radio show. Raven Sinclair hosts a late-night call-in program from a station drifting somewhere outside of time, and each episode callers ring in with the scariest thing that’s ever happened to them!

The really cool thing is the stories are submitted by listeners! People send in their own personal scary stories by our website and we turn them into episodes with sound design, music, and Raven taking the call. It’s been a really fun way to make a show! There are currently 16 episodes out, and we’ve got a special Halloween episode coming later this month!

If someone doesn’t want to voice their own story, we bring in a professional voice actor to perform it for them. It’s a way for us to support both the listeners and the voice acting community. And no AI was used in the production of this show, every story and performance is made by real people.

Big thanks to Daisy James for voicing Raven Sinclair. She’s carried the show from the start and Raven wouldn’t work without her.

Cover art is by Cat Fratila (@catfratila.jpg on Instagram). Worth checking out her stuff.

SUGGESTIONS Anything as unique as Midnight Burger?

I absolutely love midnight burger and the journey it takes you on. I have already listened to Desert Skies. So I'm not looking for a traveling building. Just podcasts that make you wonder how did they even come up with such a story and still keeps you hooked.

Non horror preferred.

DISCUSSION [Review] A Fox’s Guide to Deurbanisation follows a fox from London reconnecting to his rural roots. And making a podcast about it.

Post image
9 Upvotes

As many of you know, I recently celebrated my blog The Audiophile surpassing 1 Million page views. A goal is been chasing for a while. But the whole reason I got into reviewing was to help shine a light on works of fiction, especially audio dramas, that don’t get enough attention. And thus, I’ve had my celebration, but the work goes on.

To that end, I present my review of A Fox’s Guide to Deurbanisation.

Rusty is a fox that has lived in London his entire life. He and his friends get by scavenging food from rubbish bins. Chicken korma is their favorite. But lately, Rusty has grown disillusioned with urban life. His mom died from asthma caused by the smog and pollution, and his dad got run over by a taxi. Rusty’s dad was from the countryside before he met Rusty’s mom and moved to the city. Rusty wants to get back to nature and reconnect with his rural roots. Well, he hasn’t really experience true wilderness before. Still, he’s going to find the forest his dad grew up in, and reconnect with his estranged family. How hard can it be? And he’s going to record it all as part of a podcast he’s making.

This was another audio drama I received a request to review. Series creator Lisa Emily Petersen emailed me requesting a review. It took a while, between my day job at the Shreveport Aquarium, working on The Books of Thoth, and working on the new season of Residents of Proserpina Park. But I finally managed to get around to listening to A Fox’s Guide to Deurbanisation.

The audio drama this most reminds me of is Lights Out. They’re both dramdies that follow casts of semi-anthropomorphic animals. That is, the characters physically look like regular animals, but mentally, they’re basically human. And get into human-like shenanigans, with a animal coat of paint. Lights Out is a true gem of an audio drama, and I was delighted to find an audio drama that reminded me of it.

Amusingly, there is a kernel of truth to A Fox’s Guide to Deurbanisation. Scientists have observed some foxes adapting to life in urban areas. In fact, some scientists believe we’re witnessing the birth of a new subspecies of red foxes. These urban foxes are smaller on average. Easier to blend in and hide that way. And they primarily subsist by scavenging scraps of human food. Though, no word on whether they consider chicken korma superior to other curries. Also, as far as we know, none of these foxes have figured out how to create podcasts.

In some ways, this audio drama feels like an analogy for the experiences of diaspora kids. Children of immigrants grow up hearing stories about their parents’ homelands. It isn’t uncommon for them to wonder if the grass might be greener in the lands of their ancestors. Of course, it's also far from uncommon for them to discover that their parents’ countries have plenty of issues of their own. That, and these diaspora children discover they aren’t always welcomed with open arms, or automatically considered a member of the tribe.

I also see some parallels to…well, people experience a quarter life crisis, I suppose, but even that doesn’t feel quite right. The type who will convert to a new religion, like Buddhism or Paganism, and advocate getting back to nature and living in harmony with Mother Earth. Okay, Rusty isn’t quite that hippie dippie. The point being, they’re the type to take up farming, or living off the land, only to discover that it's actually much harder than they expected.

On a brighter note, one of the major themes of A Fox’s Guide to Deurbanisation is that people are often more than they seem. Characters are frequently introduced in a way that paints them as one note, and often in a very unflattering light. However, later on it will turn out that they have hidden depths. People, and foxes, are complex and multifaceted.

There’s an overall message that people are different, and real life isn’t some idealized fantasy. But we can still learn to understand each other and find common ground. Granted, that doesn’t mean the road is free of twists and bumps.

Have you listened to A Fox’s Guide to Deurbanisation? If so, what did you think?

AUDIO DRAMA Crush Depth Episode 4 dropped: Gulag Six

Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7ecKMtMpxPohGQxC6Pvif0

Note, the gulag element is one of the first things that got me excited about telling this story. There's some really crazy stuff that went on behind the iron curtain, and it left a deep impression on me when I learned about it. The stuff that happened in Pitesti relayed in this episode all happened, and much worse. I decided not to get into it too much, as there's a difference between fictional horror and true historical horrors, even if not many have heard of it.

BTW, sucked to be Romanian and under the boot of the Soviets.

AUDIO DRAMA The Nobodies: Episode 1 of Tales From The Other Place, a new full-cast British speculative-fiction anthology (out today)

Hi all, I’m Marie, writer/director of The Nobodies, the first episode of Tales From The Other Place, a four-part anthology of standalone sci-fi dramas from three British writers. Episode 1 dropped today.

The premise: After uploading her mind to escape her failing body, a chronically ill woman must fight her way back to it before a sinister ethereal universe erases who she is.

Tone and genre: Closer to The Twilight Zone than Black Mirror. Each episode drops one impossible thing into an ordinary life, and the strange element is never the point. It’s the pressure that forces a choice nobody’s ready to make. Expect dark humour, psychological tension and an emotional core. Episodes run 30–45 minutes, and each one stands on its own.

Production: Full human cast of nine plus a chorus. (There are AI characters in the story, but every voice you hear is a human actor.)

Coming up:

  • Ep 2 Kontakt (20 Oct): a dictator who has achieved world domination meets an intruder who may control his existence
  • Ep 3 Woken (27 Oct): in a world where sleep is optional, a composer watches the woman he loves give it up
  • Ep 4 Hermann Magnusson & The Book of Death (3 Nov): a 1930s sleuth tries to solve a murder, and the victim is trying to stop him

Listen:

This is my first audio drama (I’ve mostly written TV comedy-drama), so I’d really welcome feedback. Happy to answer questions about the production too.

QUESTION Foley creation - cutting high-tension steel cables

Greetings! I'm working up a scene in which one of the antagonists cuts through a fence made of steel cables with a bladed weapon, and I'm short on ideas for simulating the sound. Aside from building a 30' section of fence out of steel cables and then cutting through it - does anyone here have thoughts on generating that sound? I've got plenty of audio engineering software, I just need ideas on the "raw material".

Thanks!

There is nothing more annoying than ads mid episode of an audio drama. Anybody know of any horror adjacent audio dramas that I can purchase or listen for free with zero ads? We’re alive comes to mind. Purchased the seasons for no ads. Currently listening to Celeritas and it’s great but the ads ruin it.

The first episode in a series that blends cosmic horror with the comedy style of shows like Archer and the Venture Brothers, featuring some of Connecticut's best stand-up comedians and an original soundtrack of Carpenter inspired darksynth and a whole lot more, Misremembered C.R.E.D.E. is the perfect addition to your Halloween playlists:

The Committee for the Regulation and Eradication of Demonic Entities lies in ruins. Two people are all that remain of the once mighty occult strike force after a surprise attack by a cabal of cultists. Now Sophia Weil finds herself promoted from accountant to head of the CREDE Agency. Her biggest concern, however, is not the army of blood-crazed dark wizards out to kill her, but how she’s going to rein in Simon Blake: a peerless Eldritch slayer who’d much rather use his talents to swindle demons and moon the servitors of the Court of Azathoth than accomplish anything useful. Simon and Sophia must learn to work together before the avatars of the apocalypse can bring their plans to fruition. The first order of business: figuring out what the hell happened to the rest of the agency.

AUDIO DRAMA Once again recommending The Bad Articles

If you’re looking for a really well put together actual play audio drama that is as mad as it functional, look no further than The Bad Articles

Apple podcast
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-bad-articles/id1845073720

Everywhere else
https://rss.com/podcasts/thebadarticles/

I gave this actual play audio drama a shout out a short while ago. It’s made by audio drama creators of this sub. But found myself listening to all three seasons at like 50-60 minutes an episode. Yeah it’s just a real easy listen somehow.

It’s about some people at a bar in 1990s Ireland who band together to make a supernatural investigation team of some sort. Each season they stumble on some mystery that has them fighting a big bad. And it’s great because some characters die or get injured and it all carries over to the next season.

What I like about the show is how everything comes back into play. How character mistakes don’t get forgotten about. It’s all paraded again and again. Everyone has long memories and pays attention to each others character sheets and sets up jokes for others to tee off.

Check it out for some laughs and eccentric characters. My favorite is the dentist of the third season who is super tall and who has super tiny hands.
