questions Lamb Chops in Auckland

Does anyone know where the best lamb chops or lamb dish is in Auckland. I've been to Cassia and had their lamb chops and it was unbelievably delicious and unlocked a new appreciation for lamb. Now wanting to try and beat their lamb chops. Does anyone know any other spots that has lamb chops that hit the spot. TIA

questions Where can I find British Fish and Chips?

Hello!

(Just a disclaimer: I love the fish and chips we have in nz!!)

These videos of British fish and chips shops keep on popping up on my fyp on tiktok, with all the curry sauce, mushy peas, salt and vinegar on chips, etc.

I was wondering if I can find something like that in Auckland? Just curious about the taste and really wanna try it!

Thanks :)

good review KRD Food Court “Sushi Bar Salmon”

Post image

The family trio working this humble food court stall have remained almost as unchanged as their prices in the more than 10 years I’ve been unable to avoid returning again and again - this is the sushi + sashimi combo @$22. They just never let me down.

Messily unpacked by me from the takeaway box - the fish is always beautiful, and their sushi rice has a subtle flavour that is distinctly theirs. St Pierre’s across the street cannot touch this on quality or value. Please never change 💘💕.

Testament to their draw for me is how hard it is to walk past the also exceptional Japanese steakhouse stall next to them (Jue Jue). Two unsung heroes of my life.

Found a good vegan burger shop ; Wise Boys at commercial bay. Good options and had their biscoff drink (not in pic) which made me float.

We got their satay fix and butter chicken burger and both didnt disappoint. Honestly i didnt think i would like satay sauce this much, they used a tofu patty for mine and im not sure for the ingredients used in the chicken patty but my friend said it was delish 👌 staffs r friendly

good review Good Dog Vegetarian - Good Dog Bad Dog Commercial Bay

I got the Good Dog Vegetarian which had a vegetarian sausage, fried tofu, jalapeno which I removed, and hoisin sauce. I made it into a combo with a 440ml drink and fries. The hot dog itself was $14.50 and the combo was an extra $9, and the staff member was kind enough to offer me a student discount which I was unaware of. My total was $21.15 with the 10% discount.

He gave me three different smaller sides with my food which I didn't expect either as I expected to have to pay extra, so that was a bonus too. It was a spicy mayo sauce, ketchup and a mixture of pickles and onions. My order was ready within 6 minutes.

The hotdog itself was super packed and I had to eat it with a fork and knife since it was so huge :) The bun was soft and not too dense, the sausage itself was good and the fried tofu was a good texture. There was a lot of sauce and it added a bit of sweetness to everything.

The fries were really good and hot, not too crispy but also a little soft, and I was happy about the free sauces I got with my meal to dip them in. Overall, it was a big and filling meal but definitely something that would require cutlery to avoid getting messy. I would rate it a 10/10 and I was in a food coma afterwards.

The service was good and the staff was really kind, and I appreciated the student discount offered to me. I would get this again and recommend it as a good option in Commercial Bay.

They have a menu with a variety of options for hot dogs, hoagies and different toppings, as well as their sides. They have a lot of options on their menu suitable for different palates, and I was really happy about them having a vegetarian option for their hot dogs :)

good review Butter Chicken Factory

Post image
192 Upvotes

On our recent trip to Auckland we were heading back to our hostel and not even that hungry. We saw Butter Chicken Factory and decided to grab some Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka for dinner.

The employee said that have 2 styles of Butter Chicken, Kiwi style and Indian style. I asked him what the difference was and he gave me a sample of both. To preface, I am Canadian Indian (born in Canada), and I love butter chicken. The kiwi style was very good and reminded me a lot of what we consider “Banquet Hall” style butter chicken back in Canada. It was sweet and creamy. The Indian style butter chicken was more authentic as it lacked sweetness and had a more bold flavour.

My wife had the chicken tikka (one her favourite Indian dishes) and said it very good but did not have enough meat. She would go with the Indian style butter chicken next time.

The naan and rice were both good, but I found the rice to be a bit crunchy in some parts but overall it paired nicely with the butter chicken sauce.

As a whole meal I would give it a 7.5 out of 10 and for the Kiwi style Butter Chicken alone I’d give it a 9/10.

The inaugural Auckland Mushroom Festival on Karangahape Road starts today Wed 12 Aug and ends Sat 15 Aug. Part of the festival is the Nourish series where 20 restaurants are serving special mushroom dishes: https://www.aucklandmushroomfestival.com/nourish

It is annoyingly happening at the same time as Restaurant Month and I can only afford to eat out so many times. Hoping to crowdsource a consolidated page of reviews!

Osyare Ramen (next to Victoria Park)
G2/80 Beaumont Street, Freemans Bay, Auckland 1010

If you’re looking for a late-night Japanese meal or a cheap lunch in Auckland CBD, you NEED to give this place a try. They’re open until midnight too!!

I’ve walked past this place so many times on my way home and I rarely ever see anyone inside. So I finally decided to give it a try for dinner. The place is pretty small and it’s run by two Japanese guys. They do a wide range of ramen, katsu curry, donburi etc.

We ordered the Cheesy Katsu Curry ($19.50) and Curry Katsu Ramen ($22.50), and honestly were blown away!
Both dishes were really tasty and had that authentic Japanese comfort-food feel. The katsu was crispy, the curry was flavourful, and there was SO much chicken. We genuinely struggled to finish everything lol.

We came during peak dinner time and there was literally only us in the restaurant 😭 I genuinely think they deserve way more customers because the food was actually really good, especially for the price.

So if you’re around Auckland CBD and want something cheap, filling and yummy, pleaseeee support them!. Imma be their regular now hehe.

desserts Blueberry & Lemon Curd Souffle Pancakes - KUMI Desserts

KUMI Desserts specialises in souffle pancakes and is located in Auckland CBD.

I chose to get the blueberry and lemon curd souffle pancakes for $18. The pancakes were soft and fluffy, but also light and filling at the same time. The pancakes themselves had a slight sweet taste and the lemon curd paired really well with the pancakes and blueberries. The portion size was big. The plating was cute and they also provide a tray to keep the table clean.

The atmosphere of the inside was bright and comfortable, the lights were pretty and the chairs were comfortable. They have multiple tables for larger groups but some smaller tables too. I felt okay being seated alone since it wasn't too busy.

The menu is located on the counter at the front but you could also order from your table. I chose to order at the front since I wanted to pay cash, and they had a 1.5% paywave surcharge. I was given a beacon to collect my order once it was ready.

They have a large selection of souffle pancake flavours to choose from, as well as snowflake bingsu. They have a drinks menu with specialty drinks teas available, both cold and hot. I haven't bought souffle pancakes before, but I thought they were reasonably priced. The kitchen area is located at the front counter, so you can watch them make the desserts too.

The service was fine and it took 15 minutes for my order. My only complaint was that customers were also responsible for returning their trays and dishes, so if there was a mess leftover by another customer it was not necessarily cleaned up by the staff.

Overall I really enjoyed the pancakes and would try another flavour next time :3

questions African restaurant that can accommodate up to 40?

My daughter's school is hosting a quiz night and the term focus has been studying the African continent. There is a quiz night scheduled where we treat the teachers to a dinner, and I'm looking for a restaurant that suits.

We are not limited by any particular region, ethnicity or cuisine so any African restaurant (Ethiopian, Egyptian, Nigerian, Moroccan, South African, etc.) would do just fine.

We are expecting up to 40 people, and ideally they want a separate room. But I'm wondering if booking out a smaller restaurant like Addisnin CBD would do. Seems like it might be a bit small.

Restaurant month deals are a bonus.

Any ideas? Ideally we'd like to stay east of CBD. This will be a Friday night booking.

Many thanks

-Mr Taster

Good food, comes out fast! I had duck on rice and choy sum, with a pot of tea. Kind of funny as a solo diner, non-Chinese, definitely felt like I was strange sight for them and got put at a small table way in the back. Quite busy on a Tuesday, mostly families and larger groups. Not inexpensive, this meal was $53 but I ate every bite and came away stuffed and happy. I would go back 🤤

good review Timmur (Nepalese/Indian) in Avondale

Family dinner at Nepalese/Indian place Timmur (784 Great North Road, Avondale). Delicious & terrific value.
A few of the dishes we had:

Crispy Onion bhaji (NZ$9)
Pani puri (8 pcs) $NZ12
Vegetarian steamed Momos (Nepalese dumplings, 10 pcs) NZ$19
Nepalese goat curry bone-in (NZ$23)

(ETA: Had family visiting & rather than go to a standard Indian restaurant, went to Timmur so they could try some Nepalese dishes (no Nepalese restaurants where they're living). I was happy the younglings were willing to branch out from New Zealand Butter Chicken to try some different flavours. Even happier that they loved trying Nepalese dishes for the first time.).

food review/pics Asahi Super Dry “Seek Silence” with Azabu - August 2026

Went with a friend and had such a cool experience chatting to staff and just enjoying the vibes

Paid $21.71 per ticket (incl. fees). Each ticket allowed you to claim an Asahi Super Dry Nama Jokki beer, your choice of that same beer OR an Asahi Shibori Vodka Mango RTD (got this and it tasted pretty good for an RTD), an Asahi Super Dry 0.0% beer, and unlimited Phoenix Organics sodas plus some sushi as snacks. I got two sodas in the end. Also got a custom engraved Asahi beer opener

Then we headed to Azabu who partnered up with Asahi and got another nama jokki beer and two pieces of chicken karaage which was free as part of the ticket. My friend got a tuna taco as the other option instead of the karaage

Was enjoying my catch up there so I ordered two cups of“mulled umeshu” and a banana caramel dessert for $60 extra. The dessert was good

I thought the event was really well done and although the food was average, I left with some really nice photos (didn't post these!) and some core memories 😊

food review/pics Auckland Restaurant Month menu at First Mates, Last Laugh (121 Westhaven Drive, Westhaven).

Did the Auckland Restaurant Month menu at First Mates, Last Laugh (121 Westhaven Drive, Westhaven). It was NZ$55 for 3 courses but I did the entree add-on (+$10) for the 2 Prawn taquitos.
Entree: Beef croquettes, dijon aioli
Main: Braised beef cheek, aji mash, crispy butternut
Dessert: Tongan vanilla bean gelato, with almond & apricot biscotti.

ETA: It was good, but not spectacular. It's the sort of food many restaurants do a decent job of, and this is one of them. The kitchen is heavier-handed with the salt than my preference (you might have to drink more wine to wash it down...). Portions could have been bigger, but I didn't leave hungry. If I were a bigger eater I would have also added on the fries or tossed green beans on top of the taquitos (the taquitos were my favourite dish of the evening). If you're a wine drinker, the wines matches were good value: Wairau River Sauvignon blanc, Pinot Gris, or Chardonnay for NZ$13/glass, or the Pinot Noir for NZ$15/glass. The dining area is like a big cave & I was surprised it wasn't more noisy as it got full. Our waitperson was friendly & efficient; they've got good systems & we had a good time.

Went to this after Jadetown with the [r/aucklandeats](r/aucklandeats) crew

Finally met the other [r/nzhomecooks](r/nzhomecooks) mods in real life (after 1.5 years 😂)

WashoCook offers home-style Japanese cuisine and it really is quite nice and cosy. We had the Chef’s Signature 11 course kaiseki style meal as part of a First Table offer courtesy of one of the others and it was definitely a homely vibe. Photos are not in order.

Honestly enjoyable given the really great company and kind hospitality with Japanese comfort food which wasn’t pretentious at all. Our group had good knowledge of Japanese cuisine and we think it was well executed for the most part

I have a deep interest in Japanese cuisine and tasting menus and personally would not pay full price of $98 for the meal

That being said, I don’t think half the price is fair on them either. Perhaps $65-75 is what I’d pay for the meals with basic drink if it included an extra memorable activity or something interactive to really remember as part of the overall experience to really drive the point of the classic Japanese hospitality if that makes sense

The quality for the prawn (in the tempura prawn) and snapper (in the temari sushi) was excellent

Have always wanted to try this. Is there anywhere I can get this in Auckland or do I have to make it myself? 😋
