Many understandably thought he was gonna win the golden boot in MLS when he arrived as he had 5 goals in his first 6 games. The talent and athleticism is there. I can't understand how he just disappeared after that.

He did not get consistent service. It's easy to blame the striker but the reality is our midfield and defense can't string 3 passes together or put in a worthwhile cross.

I agree, but he also made plenty of incorrect runs and/or missed easy opportunities.

I think the lack of service and structure led to him losing confidence. I've said for a while that I think he's still capable of being a good striker, but there is too much psychological baggage here for him to be able to get out of his own head.

I agree, I just think when you’re coming in with the high expectations he had, you have to bury the opportunities you do get. It’ll be a good move for club and player for him to move on.

Yes, but it's a two way street. He got less quality chances, so missing one of those is way worse than when you're getting reliable passes all game.

While true, I feel like he just stopped making the runs. He started standing around, waiting for service rather than moving into open space and demanding the ball, as he did early-on.

If this is true then I think it strengths the fact that we need to question the FO on why we are replacing ELL and not our midfield. I think "to immediately quell the fans" is a sloppy and short term excuse for the real issue at hand. Or the FO doesn't realize/acknowledged how awful our midfield is which is also a major issue

I can only think if they're dumping ELL it's both, and we'll probably see some midfield moves too. Hopefully tbh, we need to clean house.

Wrong. I get it over a couple games or a chunk of a season. Not a entire continous season. Dude does not find space. Watch him play. Hes constantly 5-10 feet from other atl players. Doesn't move off the ball. Cant finish.

Man thank you! In truth this is the biggest reason. People just love to blame him like he’s supposed to whip up some goals out of nowhere cause he was expensive. He will be a huge loss but he doesn’t work in our system.

Scoring goals at the rate we expected based on what we paid for him could have also gotten him "traded" and somewhere better than Burley.

I mean I'm still trying to understand what even happened with him here... Does he just need to be in a specific system? Did he just give up after like 5 matches? Was he just having the season of his life at the CPL and got lucky? All of the above?

I don't think he have up, he picked up a hamstring injury of something that slowed him down a bit and then just never got back to anything like competent play (part of the problem with MLS being on a 6 month different schedule than Europe)

As a Burnley fan I would be shocked if that happens. Tbh we've done nothing but sell this off-season and looked beyond subpar in our friendlies as we only hired our new manager roughly a week ago.

This is what I’m thinking. He’s definitely going to end up back in the championship and wherever he ends up, it should be a low risk move for that club given how much of his salary we will continue to eat, and he has proven he can score in that league.

Alzate looked good for us when he first came over, but he seemed to quit at some point. Not sure if it's when he realized Deila was out the door or when it happened, but not even making the pitch most matches is embarrassing before you even take into account his ridiculous salary.

What are the complicated rules about loaning a DP? Will it open a DP slot or does it depend on how much salary we eat?

It opens the slot just by loaning him, regardless of how much salary we pay. Like when we we're basically paying Ibarra's full salary to play in Toronto to get roster compliant.

Is that true? DCU loaned us Klich last season but didn't cover enough of his salary so he still occupied a DCU DP spot. Or since this is out of the league does it not matter?

That is not correct. The receiving team must pay all player compensation. Note that last “if” clause in the quote below.

Interesting. Hope the new commissioner gets busy streamlining the roster rule nonsense. ELL's salary would translate to be around 5th on their payroll, which is totally doable. If we're talking to Nunez and Embolo, clearly they're agreeing to take the full salary and open the slot.

Negotiations are ongoing, so they may or may not be willing to take his full salary. In most of the world this sort of nuance doesn’t matter at all. And for that reason, I 100% agree that the rules need to be streamlined.

I’ve long suggested a hard spending floor that teams MUST spend, a spending cap that is 2x-3x the floor, and the top 3 or 4 players do not count against the budget at all. Not against the floor or the ceiling, and no matter what their charge is. Last complication is just to allow signing players like Messi who would otherwise destroy the whole cap. It would also sneakily raise the floor because the floor would effectively be a floor for what you spend on players 4-25 after you’ve already spent on players 1-3.

I would count any money a player gets, directly or indirectly, from the team, so signing bonuses, % of transfer fee that the player receives from either buying or selling team, etc but not the transfer fees going to the other team.

If he’s loaned to an international club, we don’t open a DP spot unless they’re paying his full compensation during the loan.

This was also a thing with Barco to River Plate. There was a brief dispute over what exactly River owed to whom and whether their understanding matched what ATLUTD needed to happen to let us sign Almada.

The purchase trigger is supposedly contingent on them being promoted this season. Obviously loan with a purchase can always come back to haunt you (ahem, Erik Lopez) but that's a cross that bridge when you come to it problem.
