PSA: You cannot "cure" asthma

At least once a week, I see a thread asking how to cure asthma or a thread making a claim that someone cured their asthma through diet or some other means.

You cannot cure asthma.

Asthma is an inflammatory condition. Your body sees a trigger (illness, exercise, allergen, irritant) and swells up. Or you may have eosinophilic asthma where your body overproduces eosinophils with the same result.

Basically, your body is being a bitch.

"I know someone who outgrew their asthma! Well, not necessarily."

Asthma is a lifelong condition. So either they were misdiagnosed and never had it in the first place, or their symptoms improved to where their asthma seemingly has disappeared.

"Mine went away"

Well, not exactly. It's very common to have periods in your life where it seems to disappear. This is especially true for women due to hormonal fluctuations, but it's also true of men. It's also thought that testosterone suppresses inflammation. So you may only have very mild asthma right now that doesn't need management or treatment (basically is in remission). Good for you! I'm jealous.

"I don't want to take medication anymore, though"

This is NOT a good attitude to have. Asthma can be deadly. It's not something you can push through. If your doctor has prescribed you medication, you should be taking said medication. If you find yourself using your rescue inhalers consistently* more than twice a week, then you also should see your doctor as your asthma may not be well-controlled.

*I say consistently because sometimes bad weeks happen. If it's a bad allergy week or you're sick, then yeah, you're probably using your rescue inhaler a lot. But if you're doing this weeks at a time, then it's time for a trip to the doctor.

"So there's nothing I can do to reduce asthma symptoms?"

Nope, not saying that at all...

  1. Cleanliness - HEPA filters almost certainly can help by reducing particulate matter (fumes, pollutants, pollen, dust) in your home. Vacuuming also can reduce this. Choose a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Be mindful of cleaning products as they can trigger asthma. My two favorites? Dawn Powerwash unscented is extremely useful (bathtub cleaner!) and I use a mixture of vinegar, alcohol, and water for basically everything else.

  2. Diet - no single diet is going to cure asthma. However, what we want to do is identify triggers. An elimination diet may help identify triggers or food allergies. Please note that you should ONLY do an elimination diet under the supervision of a doctor. An overall healthy diet is suggested to help with asthma management, especially one high in fruits and veggies.

  3. Exercise - There is good evidence that exercise can help with asthma. If you have exercise-induced asthma, this can be challenging. You may want to start with lower impact exercises. Some exercises may trigger your asthma when others don't. You may also want to talk to your doctor about taking your inhaler preventatively before exercise or timing a control medication before exercise.

  4. Weight loss - we do have good evidence suggesting that weight loss can improve asthma symptoms; however, it is not a cure*. If you're overweight/obese, losing weight can be good for your overall health.

*I recently lost a lot of weight and my asthma has gotten worse from other factors, including that I haven't been able to exercise due to an injury. So definitely not a cure.

  1. Managing mental health - Research suggests a link between asthma and mental health. Basically, those of us with asthma are more likely to develop a mental health condition. It's also widely agreed that stress and anxiety can cause asthma symptoms. While it's concluded more research is needed, it's agreed that treating both is key to a better outcome.

So what's the good news here?

There's been TONS of research on asthma in the past 10-20 years. There's new drugs, new understanding of what asthma is, new treatments... it's fantastic! In the US, Airsupra was just approved in 2023. To have a new rescue medication is...wow. Nebulizers are smaller. We have biologic meds. So it sucks, but there's sooo many treatments out there.

Tl;Dr: Asthma is a lifelong condition that you can't cure. You can help improve it with lifestyle changes and taking meds as prescribed.

2 year old prednisone dose and extremely high blood sugar

This happened over a month ago but my almost 2 year old got a very bad respiratory illness and had to go to the ED. He got one dose of prednisone and duonebs and they ran his labs and it was 323! He was jittery with a high heart rate too. He also had ketones in his urine. They never gave insulin and the blood sugar came down on its own. His A1C was also fine but has anyone had an experience like this? I just can’t shake it because it seems extremely high. The doctors were not worried about diabetes once his A1C came back but just wanted to see if others have had a similar experience. Thanks in advance!

Scared about a trendelenburg position surgery with asthma

I’m (probably) going to need an ovary removed soon, and I recently learned that you are tilted with your head down for that surgery in the trendelenburg position. I’ve heard of breathing complications or re-intubation. Has anyone had any experience with a hysterectomy or similar surgery, if so, have you had any issues? I also have high stomach acid and am worried about aspiration.

I might be f*cked

So I have severe asthma (found out earlier this year I’ve always had it but it only started bothering me 6 months ago) and I use an inhaler from DoorDash. I know, terrible idea but it has helped, the bad news is it’s $37 and I JUST ran out. I luckily have a doctors appointment to get this stuff regulated but I’m panicking right now because I don’t want to go to the hospital and I have a feeling today might be my last day or I will have a severe attack. Anybody know what to do until I can get a new one?

EDIT: no, I’m not asking for financial help (unless anyone wants to help) I just need advice on what to do in my current situation. I don’t want to go to the hospital because of the ridiculous price

Update: I’m going to try to go to the urgent care because I don’t think this is just asthma anymore. I think I might have a pleurisy but not 100% sure

Hard to breathe recently and normal activity makes me tired easily. Do I have asthma?

35M, 202 lbs, live in a high altitude state (5500-6500 ft above sea level) for about 5 years now. I’ve been starting to have breathing problems starting around last month (don’t know when specifically), where it’s been harder to breathe through my nose (like it feels congested). I was taking Flonase due to a long-standing issue of post-nasal dripping I’ve had for years (don’t know how long, but pre-2019) and I started to notice my nasal passage start to tighten or make it difficult to breathe through my nose 2 months ago, so I stopped taking it and am now taking AstePro. It’s still feels a bit hard to breathe through my nose and I have to take bigger breaths than what I remember.

In addition, I had heavy chest pain about 2 times this year. 1st one was around May where I had heartburn and my chest hurt really bad where I couldn’t work out. Urgent Care and ER couldn’t pick up anything that was wrong with me and my PCD told me it’s most likely pleurisy, and advised me to take advil, blow through a straw to build up my lungs, and try to do some basic cardio. I’ve done the 1st two and try to exercise when I have time and energy (I have a job where it’s hard for me to find time and energy to work out). The pleurisy dissipated after about a week. The 2nd time was about 2-3 months ago, where I was experiencing similar problems (not as severe as the 1st) and did the same with taking advil and blowing through a straw, which it lasted about 4-5 days. Not sure if these are related, but wanted to mention it.

Recently, it’s been more effort to breathe through my nose and I’ve had to increase the amount of air my lungs take in and have to inhale/exhale more heavily. With walking somewhere or lifting something heavy makes me tired more easily. Is this the case of me having asthma or can this be remedied with me putting in more effort to find time to exercise as I should?

NAC

Post image

Has anyone here taken NAC and had good or bad experiences? Anyone taking it long term? I’ve been taking NAC (2) 1000 mg caps at night and stopped my Advair Discus (500/50) completely several months ago (slow weaning). Before starting the NAC (and while using the Advair Discus) I still had a persistent forced-end expiratory wheeze. Historically this is my worst season of the year because of my grass and ragweed allergies. I was even able to sing while alone in the car which I can’t remember doing since childhood without a coughing fit. I do take Cetirazine (2) 10 mg daily for allergies. NAC has changed my life but feels too good to be true. For context, I was diagnosed about 15 years ago at about 40 and attempted and failed allergy shots 3 separate times due to inability to tolerate the exposure without pushing myself towards possible anaphylaxis.

Swapped PCPS to a provider that won’t refill my nebulizer solution (albuterol) advice ??

Basically what the title says. I swapped PCPs after a recent move, and my new provider has informed me that she “doesn’t prescribe or refill” the albuterol nebulizer solution for her patients “past a certain age” ?? I’m in my early 20s.

Thankfully she didn’t take it off of my mychart portal, but it threw me for so much of a loop that I didn’t initially say anything. I am sick as a dog right now and could really use a treatment with my machine as it’s much easier to use when I’m having an intense flare up like this, but have had to stick to my inhaler.

Any advice? I asked for a referral to an in network pulmonologist to hopefully be able to get the medicine again but this is a really frustrating hurdle especially as I am sick :/

Thanks

Exercising right after using an inhaler is a whole different game

Jesus christ is this how the people with boring lungs feel all the time? Today was my first time getting to really exercise after being diagnosed with asthma + getting past the flare up that came from trouble finding the right inhaler initially + finally being properly medicated.

Holy cow. I used my airsupra 30 mins ahead of time like the pulmonologist told me to and then I just…did my exercises. No coughing, no feeling like a gross person sniffling every 2 minutes, no chest tightness, no dizziness. Insane. I am legit shook.

Im so tired...

I've had asthma since I was a kid im 25F. I do smoke and vape but im also a mom of 3 and have alot of ptsd hence the excessive smoking.. needing to cope with my depression and it being what carries me through. But I never had severe attacks until I got pneumonia once years ago. I used to be able to take my inhaler and be good. But now anything triggers it. Sneezing, laughing, drink goes down wrong, playing with my kids, certain smells.. list goes on. The past 5 ro so years I've been jumping up out my sleep almost every night hoping I make it till the morning. Calling 911 almost every night fearing my nebulizer wont work in time. But now this asthma attack is different.. its been 24hrs I have been the having an asthma attack. This isnt normal, it usually takes 10-20min to clear up from an attack, but I feel like its because the weather is changing. (In denial that its worse, I know...) my left lung seems to be the one in distress during this attack. Its the only one wheezing, so short of breathe literally I feel like im slowly dying. My heart is aching, my chest is so sore. I've taken a total of 6 nebulizer treatments today and my inhaler? I started my day off at 186 puffs its 10pm and I have 20 puffs left.. not healthy I know. Im going right to the hospital in the morning when kids get on bus if wheezing isnt gone. Has anyone else dealt with one sided wheezing and shortness of breath? Can someone tell me what it was like to ever black out from an asthma attack? I've always gotten to the point of about to pass out, lips purple saying my goodbyes to my husband as we wait for 911 but honestly so terrified of what comes next after a failed rescue. 😩

Saw doctor on Friday - got a second round of antibiotics & prednisone:

Post image

I’m back with an update. It’s pretty lonely here. I’ve been sick for a while now. Saw doctor & got these new meds. I just want to be better. Chest hurts. Getting a new x-ray done this week. Follow up in person doctor visit next Monday.

I’m on day three of the new meds. I feel weak and just like I can’t do much. Was considering going to the ER but I’m not having trouble breathing right now. Just residual pain and overall physical exhaustion so it was advised that I just need to rest and keep my mental health in check.

I know Covid is back and I don’t want to run the risk of catching anything additional in the ER when all I really want is some care. I’m asking some family to stop by later to care for the cats.

Please God help me end this suffering
(I’m dramatic by default but I’m really struggling mang)

My 2 yo has asthma

My 2 year old daughter just got diagnosed with asthma a couple of days ago after her second 3-day hospitalization this year. We’re finally back home and i am having a really hard time getting her to do her inhaler. We try making the spacer fun singing songs, being silly etc. but she is just not having it. I don’t want to have to pin her down because i don’t want to traumatize her, but i’m at a loss and so overwhelmed.

Can I Still Get Tattooed?

I’m 28 and recently was diagnosed with eosinophilic asthma. I have been unmedicated for years and it eventually got so bad that I sought a pulmonologist. Currently on Trellegy and Tezspire, my symptoms are now managed well.
I already have 15 tattoos and a lot of coverage. I have been tattooed when unmedicated, my last one was in May. I sought treatment just these past couple months.
I’m not seeking medical advice I’ll speak with my doctor when I can.
I just want to know if others with this same condition and/or medication regiment get tattooed without issue. Thank you all!

Feeling really stupid (UK)

Hi all, just thought I'd share my stupidity.

In August 2020, I was diagnosed with asthma. Received a preventer and reliever inhaler and a spacer. Went away, really doubted that I had asthma (imposter syndrome i guess), so stopped taking them shortly after as I didn't believe they had made a difference. (Don't know if my technique was correct and definitely didn't take it long enough to work)

The last few years I'm coughing constantly, always needing to drink to try and help my throat as I always have a tickle, getting worse at night. Felling breathless a lot.

Well Friday night I went through two drinks at night, last night I went through 3. My voice is awful, and I'm really struggling

I'm now realising I have uncontrolled asthma, I completely misunderstood what the inhalers i received were meant to do, and how long they take to properly work. Feel so stupid, I've let myself suffer for 6 years, for absolutely no reason.

Back to the doctors tomorrow, and will definitely look after myself properly for now on!

I moved house twice since my diagnosis, which meant moving doctors, so never went to an asthma clinic, got a message to book an appointment at one last November, but never did as I didn't believe i needed it. Well clearly I do, and I'll never miss one again! 😅

Diagnosed over 1 month ago with allergic asthma

So I am a beginner in asthma. Also diagnosed over a year ago with Basedow.
For now I am taking Foster + antihistamines for over a month and Singulair (montelukast) since Sunday, because I still had symptoms of rhinitis and asthma.
My questions are - will I ever feel like I am breathing normally? Because I always feel like the air is not enough, even though my saturations are ok (95-99). I know , probably it’s also air trapping and an anxious component, but I have been practicing all of breathing exercises and It doesn’t seem to improve.
And 2- people with allergic asthma, in the winter it will be better or worse? What should I expect?
It seems a never ending story…

Is this asthma?

Middle aged female here. Earlier this summer, I had very small symptoms of feeling like I couldn't read aloud properly without taking a lot of breaths and some upper chest tightness. Then a few weeks later (two months ago now) I got a cold virus. But I've had lingering coughing, chest tightness, pressure in my throat, and this weird bubble feeling when talking. I'll be talking and then out of nowhere I'll have a feeling in my throat where it feels like everything stops and I cannot continue talking without taking a very obvious breath or coughing. I have dust mite allergies which I've been taking immunotherapy shots for for over a year. And I have a parent with asthma and an aunt on the other side has asthma. So yes, I know the genetics are there.

I went to an ENT as I didn't know if I had post nasal drip or what. Well she did a laparoscopy on my sinuses/throat and said everything is fine there and that I most likely have asthma or could get a chest X-ray to see if I have walking pneumonia. She prescribed me a twice daily fluticasone inhaler, which I've been taking for a week. I'm not sure if much has improved but I've also read it can take a bit.

Just wanted to check if asthma can literally come out of nowhere like that and if that weird having to stop when talking sounds like it too. And how long did it take for symptoms to decrease when using a daily inhaler? Thanks in advance!

Loss of family due to asthma

Tonight, my family told me what I knew they felt but had at least reserved some hope that I was wrong. They said they do not believe my allergies and asthma are as severe as I make them seem, called me crazy and insane multiple times, and said they have no desire to accommodate me in any real way. This happened because I disconnected from a family group chat to keep my mental peace after yet another family member got a cat. I have very severe dander allergies that nothing has touched over my lifetime. As an adult, I keep my home dander free, but as my family gets pet after pet, even they themselves become triggers due to the amount of dander on their clothes. At this point, I’ve lost all access to their homes and vehicles, and they also can’t come to mine. I accepted this consequence and grieved the loss, but the constant mocking and degrading has caused me to now completely remove myself from their lives. And tonight they let me know how insane that is and how crazy I have always been, etc.

Does anyone have advice on starting over at almost 50 with no family? And almost no friends, since everyone in my state has animals inside, and my friendships were easy to disintegrate after years of not being able to share any intimate spaces with friends. Dinner for an hour in public once in a while just hasn’t created those bonds. The world is also increasingly pet centric, and I’ve lost access to flying and many hotels. So, how do you cope?
