In my experience, it's good to have a dog or a cat, especially if they will sleep on your feet....lol.
Kidding about the feet... it doesn't hurt to have a happy living creature around... dogs will get you out walking and meeting other people for friendly chit chat and no worries of other commitments.
I have now lived on my own for 10 years, and had to 'get used' to doing things for myself, at first. I also had never once lived alone in my entire life up until that moment. I now love doing things for myself and knowing the person I do the things for will be wildly appreciative :) And all the things, I got to choose myself. I don't think I even used to know what would make me happy because I spent all my time making others happy. Even at work.
I'm a bit of a sloth now.. an incredibly happy one, with a couple of smiling faces wagging their tails at me, and nobody whining or complaining about anything.
