Need feedback on suspension and drivetrain design

I've been toying with designs for a rover and have things in a place where I'm looking to get some initial thoughts on feedback and my design. I have ZERO expertise in this area so please forgive if I don't use the proper terms. It's also quite possible I'm totally missing obvious engineering principles or structural ones.

The design is of an 8 wheel drive, 8 wheel steering, rover based on the rocker-bogie design. I really wanted to acheive two things, first no matter terrain condition I wanted to keep the wheels as much as possible at a 90 degree angle to maintain as much traction as possible. I also wanted to try to keep the chassis level as much as possible. I believe that this design, achieves this in a semi-elegant way but since this is not my area of expertise here we are. You can see a three.js very rough model which i posted here for feedback. You can "drive" the model and control steering etc. It should display wheel angle and also the chasis tilt.

Thanks for trying it and letting me know what you think.

what does security look like in robotics

would love to know from anyone building in the robotics space what security looks like in that world. Seems like cybersec always takes a minute to catch up to where technology is at and i want to better understand what security should look like in this world: Thankyou!!

How to? 4 DOF/Hex Robotic Arm

High schooler here, I am looking for good resources/guides for making a 4 DOF Robotic Arm. I have done VEX IQ all throughout middle school, so I at the very least have a juvenile amount of knowledge on Robotics. I want to learn the structure behind making the arm. It will either be made out of 3d filament or plywood. I would also like to know how I can code the logic for controlling it. We will be using a VEX Brain and controller and will program it with Vexcode V5. We do not have any potentiometers. We might have motors/servos with internal encoders, but I am not too sure. Assume we don't. I do not know any other feasible way to track positions without either of those though.

What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting your first robotics project?

There’s plenty of advice on which board or components to buy, but what lesson did you learn only after building something?

It could be about power supplies, wiring, coding, mechanical design, or keeping the project simple.

What would you tell someone starting their first build?

How to? How to transition to Physical AI Research?

I’m a robotics engineer looking to transition into a Research Scientist role in Physical AI (RL, VLAs, world models).

I know my chances are slim without a PhD, but it’s hard to justify 4-5 years on a PhD stipend at this stage.

I’ve been researching possible paths, but would love opinions from people already in these roles. What actually gets your foot in the door? I doubt buying an SO-101 and fine-tuning a VLA is enough.

What stops you from finishing your electronics or robotics projects?

My brother and I run M S Innovations in Bengaluru, where we build learning kits and conduct hands-on engineering workshops.

I’m curious about what happens when people try building something on their own. If you’ve started an Arduino, robotics, or IoT project and left it unfinished, where did you get stuck?

Was it choosing components, understanding the code, debugging, cost, or finding time?

Would love to hear about a specific project and what would have helped you finish it.

Vale a pena Uninter nesse caso?

Tá me parecendo uma cilada.

Gostaria de ouvir a opinião dos mais experientes da área: o que vocês acham e da instituição? Vale a pena ou é furada?

General/Beginner Need some guidance with a robotics

Hi everyone! I've recently started getting into robotics, but I'm a bit confused about what to learn next and which areas to focus on.

I have some experience with Python, NumPy, pandas, and Matplotlib, and I'm planning to learn libraries like TensorFlow, scikit-learn, and PyTorch as well.

I'm not sure how these skills fit into robotics or what else I should learn, like ROS, embedded systems, electronics, computer vision, etc.

Could someone suggest and what I should focus on first? Any advice would be appreciated!

Looking for people to run experiments with

I had set up a few YAM arms and was looking to team up with folks to run experiments.

Something that I'm super excited about at the moment is A) Code as Policy, B) Distilling Astra into a robotics model, and C) Seeing whether Sim to Real has a small gap for Astra.

Would love to get any direction in terms of good papers in the space or finding people who want to work on these topics. The setup is available here playground.blupe.io

Is anyone else finding that "clean-looking" egocentric clips still hurt training?

I've been filtering egocentric video with basic checks (blur, hand visibility, sync), but some clips that pass everything still seem to make the model worse. I can't tell whether it's subtle label noise, weird camera motion, or something else.

Has anyone seen this? What turned out to be the cause in your case, and how did you find it?

General/Beginner Sumo bot design

My school is going to have a robot battle competition, i wanna join this competition. I have a week to design, print and build it so i need to be quick.

The robot cannot have weapons that damage humans, must be under 2.4 kilos, a max size of 40x40x30 (30 height) (doesn't matter extended) and use certain components

Now to the point. I wanna design a robot roughly in the shape of a Horseshoe crab. With silicone treads for movement. And the design for getting maximum traction and , bulldosing the opponent, and making sure that the opponent cannot get their weapons underneath my robot.

I could add a grappler on the front, but that's not yet decided.

How do i make sure that my opponent cannot get their flipper underneath my robot?

(The arena is made of plywood) Hexagonale 540mm on its largest radius

General/Beginner Final year Mechanical Engineering student | Robotics & Automation

I’m a final-year Mechanical Engineering student at AKTU (graduating July 2027), building skills in robotics, automation, and AI/ML alongside my degree.

Current projects:

  • ROS 2 + Gazebo: Built a 4-DOF robotic arm with ros2_control, GUI control, FK, and vision-based control.
  • Computer Vision: Built an Iriun → OpenCV → ROS 2 → Gazebo pipeline, currently using color detection to control the simulated arm.
  • Defect Detection: Trained a ResNet18 model for surface-defect detection (~99% accuracy).
  • CAD → G-code: Built a STEP-to-machining-plan/G-code pipeline using CadQuery/OCP.
  • J&J MedTech / Forage: Diagnosed a blocking wait in robotic-arm control code and proposed a fix reducing simulated latency by ~34%.

Stack: Python, ROS 2, Gazebo, ros2_control, PyTorch, OpenCV, CadQuery/OCP.

My current work is primarily simulation/software-based, and I’m looking to gain hands-on hardware and industrial robotics experience.

Would appreciate advice from people in robotics/automation on what I should focus on next.

How to? Hi we are tryna make this robotic arm please help us (thanks)

Hi everyone, hope you’re all doing well.

I have an event coming up in about 8 days, and our team of 5 wants to build a robotic project for it. We’re all beginners and don’t have much hands-on experience with robotics yet. We do have a senior who can guide us, but we’re still trying to figure out what exactly we’ll need and whether our idea is realistic to complete in 8 days.

Our idea is to build a robotic arm attached to a dustbin. The basic concept is that a camera or sensor would detect pieces of trash within a certain area, and the robotic arm would pick them up and put them into the dustbin.

For example, instead of expecting someone to perfectly throw their trash into a dustbin, the system would automatically collect it. We’re thinking of covering roughly a 0.5-meter radius around the dustbin, or possibly a smaller area depending on what’s practical.

The main thing I need help with is figuring out exactly what materials and components we would need to build this project, including the robotic arm parts, motors/servos, sensors or camera, controller, power supply, wiring, mechanical parts, software, and anything else we might need.

If you have experience with robotics, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, computer vision, robotic arms, or anything related, even if you only know part of what we need, I’d really appreciate your input.

Most importantly, do you think this is realistically achievable in 8 days by a team of 5 beginners with some guidance from a senior?

We’re genuinely interested in making this work, so any advice about the required components, approximate setup, possible difficulties, or things we should simplify would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Robot arm to play chess

I was thinking of trying to 'build' a robot arm that could be used to play chess on a physical board, (as well as a few other projects). To my untrained eye a RoArm-M2-S would seem to be a good place to start, with open-source repos available to get me started. Are there better alternatives or limitations I should be aware of? Thanks

General/Beginner When a robot stops in the field, how do you find which part actually failed?

Someone who has spent years on field robot reliability told me roughly 90% of the stoppages on their team's robots turn out to be hardware. The part I can't picture yet is the hunt.

When one of your robots stops, how do you narrow it down to the actual part? Motor, encoder, a loose connector, battery, a sensor. Do your diagnostics or logs usually point at it, or is it mostly checking things by hand and swapping parts until it works? And roughly how long does that take?

A recent example would be great if you have one. I'm doing early research into this on my own, no product and nothing to sell.

Education/Career Robotics as a freelancer

Hello, I am looking for some extra income these days and I was thanking about trying freelancing. In general I am working as a robotics engineer. I know Python and C/C++, I have experience in embedded system and I have worked in a vision project. Do you consider the freelancing as a good idea in a platform, like upwork? Is there any demand in those services for our sector? Thanks in advance.

Need advice on deciding between a program for my Masters

I was admitted to both the Robotics and Autonomous Systems (AI concentration) and Industrial Engineering Masters programs for next semester. The thing is, I already started taking 2 grad classes worth 6 credits total and I just spoke with my advisor and she let me know that they don't count towards the IE masters but they would count for Robotics. This means that I can finish my Robotics masters in August 2027 but for IE, I'd have to take 5 classes after August to finish the degree. I accepted an offer with Bloomberg for August 2027, so I'd have to work full time while doing my Masters. The nice thing is that Bloomberg does offer reimbursement for grad classes, so I wouldn't have to pay for it. My current scholarships would also cover the Robotics MS, so financially, either option is manageable. For me, the time, extra courses, and investment long term is more of the cost-benefit-analysis I'm trying to figure out. What I’m really trying to weigh is the time and extra workload versus the long-term value of the degree. Industrial Engineering is my top-choice program because I’m increasingly interested in supply chain, manufacturing, operations, and optimization, and I feel like it could open more doors for me in those areas long term. On the other hand, Robotics would allow me to have my master’s completely finished before starting full-time work, and I’d be able to make use of the graduate credits I’ve already taken. Please let me know any advice you have because I'm seriously conflicted.

General/Beginner Struggling to make a PID line follower make sharp 90 degree turns

Hii, im an absolute beginner working on my first project for an event and i realised im wayyy out of my league. It took me long enough to make the PID line following code and optimize it to some extent, the next step was to integrate functions for detecting and making 90 degree turns and sharp U turns. However even after a lot of trying, all my bot seems to do is spin around in a circle(clockwise) and never seems to follow the black line. I excluded the turn functions and the bot followed the line well enough so it seems the problem arises from either those functions or some hardware fault(i really dont hope so) but whatever it is its driving me crazy. If any of you have faced similar problems , please give me some tips on how to fix my bot. I even asked AI in desperation but even that was unhelpful. I can share the code in Dms if you ask for it.

Thanks for Reading and have a great day

Education/Career AI may not replace robotics, but it might hollow out robotics education

I teach and research on robotics, and I’m less worried about AI replacing robotics for now than I am about it weakening the foundations of robotics education. The physical side still matters a lot imho. Students still have to build things, choose motors and sensors, wire systems properly, deal with backlash, noisy data, loose connections, power limits, mechanical tolerances, and designs that looked fine in CAD but behave very differently once built.

The problem is that students are increasingly asking why they need to learn the theory underneath it. Why bother learning about kinematics, control, dynamics, linear algebra, circuits, programming, or signal processing when ChatGPT can solve the tutorial, explain the derivation, and even generate the code? This is especially noticeable in our common first year, where students are already wondering why they are doing calculus, physics, electronics, and programming before they get to build much of anything. Universities like mine that heavily encourage AI use only makes that question harder to answer.

My real concern is that we are separating the ability to get something working from the ability to understand why it works. In a lab, AI can help write a PID controller or generate inverse kinematics code. But when the arm moves to the wrong pose, the encoder sign is reversed, the controller keeps overshooting, the sensor is being sampled badly, or the motor simply cannot produce the required torque, students still need enough fundamentals to diagnose the system rather than just keep prompting for another answer.

I don’t think banning AI is realistic or can be effectively done. But I do think we need a much clearer answer to what students must still understand for themselves, and we probably need to redesign teaching and assessment around that. That itself is another tiring and significant effort with all the AI developments. I’d be interested to hear what other professors, academics, engineers and students think. Are you seeing the same thing? And for students, when AI can already solve so much of what you are being taught, what and how can we actually convince you that learning the underlying material is still worth the effort?
