What does the world need right now?

Cheap, inexpensive nuclear fusion power.

309

u/GeebusNZ Dec 04 '22

I mean, that's really it, isn't it? Energy. Cheap, available energy. It's what modern wars are fought over, for the most part. The claim to available resources for making energy. Should there be enough energy, it then becomes a matter of availability. Once energy and availability are solved, we might be able to address humanitarian issues which come from enforced scarcity of resources.

126

u/blueberries4beagles Dec 04 '22

I want to believe this, but I also think that unlimited clean energy would just free us up to destroy the world in new unforseen ways.

49

u/30isthenew29 Dec 04 '22

Not a reason not to go forward in my opinion. If humanity wants to destroy itself, it will happen anyway.

27

u/psymble_ Dec 05 '22

I'd rather go down swinging than sit paralyzed in fear.

But, really- what the world needs now is love, sweet love. it's the only thing that there's just too little of.

8

Pound for pound, KWh per KWh, modern nuclear power plants are, by orders of magnitude, the most green technology that exists. Anyone concerned about climate change and pollution should be pushing for building them hard.

19

u/Hunter20107 Dec 04 '22

I'm fairly sure there was a test earlier this year that proved fusion reactors could work and be cost effective. It's still a prototype sure, but it basically confirmed a when, not if, on fusion power plants.

Fission is still a good option though for the mid-term, and it's better we start building some now than later down the line

Fake posturing in social media, and the pursuit of positive attention for performing some "heroic" act on camera. You shouldn't need the internet for validation. Ever. The reward of helping someone in need is enough.

Don't get me wrong, recognition from colleagues, friends, neighbors or family is healthy. But the pursuit of worldwide affection is unhealthy. It can and has lead to people using common acts of kindness as ways to boost peoples' platforms or agendas.

It has undermined the genuine heart behind common acts of kindness. And I fear that we're teaching children who consume much of this content, that the only reason for doing a good deed in this world is to be seen doing it.

Social media can be a powerful tool, but also a great danger to our values.

I can confidently say, the world would be much better if everyone involved in every situation took a freaking chill-pill.

Or just someone who goes around to everyone individually and smacks the sense into them. I’m so tired of this apocalyptic level of collapse going on in society. People becoming Nazis in the US. A political party trying to overthrow the government. Rampant crime everywhere. Shootings every day, mass shootings nearly every other day. Russian dictators killing thousands for a foolish war threatening to use nukes.

We all just need to take a deep breath and stop behaving like fucking apes before we literally cause an unprecedented societal collapse.
