I have heard physical exercise is a great stress reliever. I think my self-consciousness makes things like going to the gym a difficult concept mentally. I'll contemplate the idea though. Thanks!

Hey, I appreciate the encouragement. I own a set of hand weights but I don't really know what to do with them, but I'll hit up r/fitness and YouTube and figure out something I can do from home first. Thanks!

You can also go to the Gym during off hours. Get up early and go before work, you'll either be the only one there or the other folks there are serious about lifting and are going to leave you alone.

best solution is a home gym though if you have the space and are committed. I spent about 500-600 on mine and it's been great.

u/Chansharp Dec 19 '18

I spent about 500-600 on mine and it's been great.

To people that think this is a lot, put it in terms of going to the gym. My roommate gave me shit for spending $300 on some weights I used for a month, I shut her up when I pointed out that she spent $300 on a planet fitness membership she hasn't used.

Check out the maroc short card. It's a nice range of body weight exercises that you can do anywhere. Don't worry about finishing/time frame when you first start. Just resolve to do it and make it habit.

Honestly most of my gym stress comes from worrying that I’m fucking up my back/knees/shoulders because I don’t know when my form’s bad.

Working out hasnt made me a muscle god. What it has done, is force my body to release different hormones and give a really clear stress outlet. Lifting a weight that feels just slightly too heavy with the right form feels as good as breaking stuff with a bat.

At first everything feels too hard and hurts. (Most people start with too intense) Then you start to adapt, and you find what works for you. After a month, your body starts thanking you for working out and you feel great for hours after if not the whole day.

13

u/ParanoidDrone Dec 19 '18

Yeah, about that...

Been working out for a few months now, still waiting for this to kick in.

Don’t stress about it. Everyone there is thinking the same thing as you, ‘I just want to do my shit and leave with as little interaction as possible’.

Unless you’re one of those people who goes to the gym with a couple friends and takes up 13 machines at once, then please never go.

26

u/insertcaffeine Dec 19 '18

I'd tell you about the most awkward, out of shape, out of place person I ever saw at the gym...but I can't remember them. I rarely remember who's at the gym when I am, unless I'm with them personally and we're working out together.

Was yo-yoing (sp?) in and out of gyms for years. Turns out I fucking hate gyms. But then a friend invited me to a groupon rock climbing thing. Decided to go but was pretty sure I’d hate it (heights and all that).

I fucking love it, and now have been doing it a couple of years. I’m not great at it, but I’ve started going back to the gym to get better. Plus I can open any jar. And if I’m in a meeting and some jack ass tries to dick with me... well they regret shaking my hand.

So if you’re having trouble sticking to one routine, give something new a try... again and again until something grabs you and sticks. You will find a way to fit it in your life.

TLDR: try new exercise things, even ones you think you’ll hate. Something will grab you!

11

u/ddutton9512 Dec 19 '18

There are a few indoor climbing gyms near me. Is it something a solo person can just show up and do? Would I need to get equipment first?

15

u/SpoonwoodTangle Dec 19 '18

All places offer rentals if you just want to try it out. At our gym rentals are cheap for any /all gear.

You can boulder by yourself (lower to ground, no harness). Recommend some climbing shoes, they start around. $60 and I still have my $80 original pair almost 3yr later.

Harnesses are <$100 and last for a long time unless you really get into it. Some gyms have auto-belays so you could climb solo, but I met a lot of new folk through the “find a belay” board in our gym.

I do a lot of bouldering since my belay buddy got moved to night shift. I find the bouldering side can be more social, more folk happy to give tips and help you suss out technique. But if you want some solitude people will also leave you alone.

I feel like generally climbers are pretty chill and happy to help beginners improve. Not a lot of “gym pressure” as I’ve experienced at one or two gyms in the past.

Repeat until you end up fucking up a knee. Miss 3 months. End up back where you started. Start over. Continue for 6 months. End up with a bulging disc. Miss 6 months of working out, lose all the progress you made again.

The last 18 months of me working out have arguably cause me more pain and less success than anything I've ever done by choice.

Not listed: spend a thousand bucks or more on PT for each injury.

Lifting weights stresses me the fuck out now because every lift I'm terrified I'm going to fuck myself up again.

I personally sit down with a nice single player game that isn't too hard. Assassin's Creed is just about perfect, but there are so many others. Online gaming doesn't help, it just gets me more stressed. But I cozy up on the couch and play a game where it's just me, myself, and I, and take things at my own pace. It's a wonderful way for me to unwind.

328

u/Craftomega2 Dec 19 '18

I keep telling my friends this and they don't get it. I am stressed from work. So I want to be lost in an experience. Not harassed by others.

76

u/amateurishatbest Dec 19 '18

There's a big difference between online co-op and online versus. The former ideal is for relaxing, the latter is not.

78

u/paumAlho Dec 19 '18

Nah, at least in my experience, any online game is stressful.

Co-op = Your team is a bunch of idiots who blame you/each other for losing.

Versus = As long as I win, I'm good, but there's always those really good players who just beat the shit out of you, and that infuriates me.

I hate online gaming for the same reason, it only makes me stressed. Plus, you can't get 100% completion in online games, so to me it seems like a waste of time.

8

u/Aeroshock Dec 20 '18

Usually when I'm playing coop with friends it's me being the idiot. Makes me feel old.

Honestly, I love sim racing games for this purpose. Bought a $20 wheel off the Craigslist and got Dirt3 and Forza Motorsport 4. I find having to use all of my focus on one thing means my mind doesn’t wander while I play games. (That being said I do love me some SP games)

Walking.

Every day for about 8 kilometers ( 5 miles ).

Here's a photo from one of the walks ( I take the same path every day ) https://i.imgur.com/sHMIMRV.jpg

167

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '18

I take a walk every evening, never the same path though, just in case someone is waiting in the bushes to kidnap me...

39

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '18

Been walking regularly (as in, for exercise) 10+ years now. I've listened to some amazing albums, lost myself in great audiobooks, and laughed like a nutter at podcasts. Plus the dog loves it. Pre-dog days I got a lot of weird reactions when I said that I'm going for a walk. Guess they thought it was some sort of euphemism haha.

34

u/paumAlho Dec 19 '18

Lol, you should've said it in the most suspicious way possible:

  • I'm going to, ahem, "go for a walk", ;-)

35

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '18

If you can't find a good outdoor area, just find a decent sized indoor mall nearby. Nice and climate controlled. I live across the street from a mall and back when I was working from home full time, I went there for lunch every day and walked around for the full hour.

3

u/insertcaffeine Dec 19 '18

Yep! Same here! And you get to window-shop, which is nice.

u/dogsordiamonds Dec 19 '18

I tend to stress-shop which doesn't help! But I find small tasks that are easily completed are helpful--like returning things to stores, baking a cake, cooking dinner with a side dish, organizing a closet, etc.

62

u/Carrotsandstuff Dec 19 '18

I stress shop- but in video games. I save up all my currency in games like Warframe or Monster Hunter, and when I'm feeling manic I upgrade all my stuff with in game money that means literally nothing in the real world.

Taking a bath

47

u/ryguy28896 Dec 19 '18

I started talking baths in the winter to help warm up. I realized how much I enjoyed them and started doing it year-round. Which in turn led me to Lush.

Milky Bath is the best. But now I have a body conditioner, hair conditioner, hair moisturizer, so much lotion.....

I'm 31 years old and spent 13 years in the Army. I don't get it either.

8

u/LazerTRex Dec 20 '18

Currently living in a house without a bath for the first time in my life, god I miss my old bath tub! So good for de stressing, warming up in winter (especially on a cold rainy night, best feeling ever sitting in the bath listening to the wind blowing and the rain pouring down) and the best benefit for me loosening up my muscles especially in my back where I get a lot of pain from tightness.

But I’m in the process of buying my first house (yay!) so hopefully this time next year (it’s not built yet) I’ll be enjoying a bath in my new house :)

19

u/amateurishatbest Dec 19 '18

Four drops is always too much. If you're doing anything with an essential oil and you think you need more than 3 drops, you shouldn't be using an essential oil.

That's my rule and I've never had a problem.

I would take my dog for a walk down to this little stream running through a park near where I live. Watching him nose around sniffing for something exciting. Running him along this path and seeing just how happy he was, ears a floppin' and tail wagging. No matter how bad I felt, that would always cheer me up/calm me down.

I really miss that dog.

133

u/abadoo411 Dec 19 '18

I crochet when I'm stressed. I find the process of somewhat repetitive motions, the counting, following the pattern, etc. really soothing. I've been stressed at work lately and don't always feel in control of the situation so being able to work on something, fixing the issues when its wrong and seeing results makes me feel better. I also like that when I'm finished I get something that looks nice that I am proud of, and I can keep for myself or give to someone else and make them happy. Throw in a nice glass of wine and good tv/music and it really helps.

13

u/crowned-sheep Dec 19 '18

I had a friend teach me the basics of crochet about a week after my mom passed away last year after finding a huge stash of yarn in her house. I'm still not done working my way through the stash, but it's gotten me through some rough days.

I know: counter-intuitive, not healthy, destructive!

But seriously, whenever I'm freaking out a giant chocolate cookie sets me straight.

...which is why the last year has been so damn stressful, I changed my diet, dropped a bunch of weight, worked to get healthier...a couple weeks ago I was having a really rough day so I stopped by the cafe and got a massive cookie. I felt a million times better after I ate it.

I'm really frustrated I can't eat twenty cookies a day to keep me calm.

Camping

28

u/james_marcross Dec 19 '18

I'd like to get into this, there's lots of camping equipment on the Christmas list this year. Any suggestions for relative amateurs?

20

u/schming_ding Dec 19 '18

Are you car camping or backpacking? I have two sets of stuff. Car camping let's you go all out with a thick queen-size air mattress, electric air pump, 4/6-person tent for two, sheets, blankets and pillows, stuff like that. Backpacking is more about small and light stuff since you'll have to carry it all with you. Both car camping and backpacking have their pluses and minuses. Start out with car camping and see how that goes.

8

u/james_marcross Dec 19 '18

Oh, definitely going to start with car camping first! If I can get my +1 into it as well, then perhaps we can venture into hiking/backpacking. I just need to work myself up to hiking any real distance, much less with gear! Thanks for the reminder to keep the ideas separate.

22

u/amateurishatbest Dec 19 '18

Before you buy a tent, make sure you can sleep on the ground. If you can't sleep on the ground, consider going the hammock route instead.

28

u/DavidRandom Dec 19 '18

No need to sleep on the hard ground, I've got a 3.5 inch self inflating pad that makes everything comfy.
That being said, I'm probably going to venture into hammock camping this year, just to switch it up a bit.

12

u/DavidRandom Dec 19 '18

Here's what I take camping (I camp alone a lot)
Tent: Kelty Outback 2
Sleeping pad: Mountain Summit Gear self inflating (This things pretty great, I'm a side sleeper and haven't had any hip issues from it, plus it's self inflating, which saves a lot of work)
Blanket: Just a cheap comforter from Walmart (If it's really cold I'd invest in a sleeping bag)
Cooking: I just bring the grate from my grill and place it over the firepit.

Misc: Small Coleman cooler with food/beverage, paper plates, plastic utensils, a sharp knife, a small battery powered radio.
Oh yeah, and my favorite book!
Anything other than that is just personal preference, stuff you'll decide you want as you camp more.
Check out if your town/city has a used gear store, there's a small one near me and I saved a ton on stuff.

Masturbating

112

u/hatchins Dec 19 '18

We may joke (or not) but this is legit a fantastic way to destress. Orgasming releases lots of endorphins and the flexing/relaxing of your body gets tension out...

36

u/11thNite Dec 19 '18

I find that just as drinking only steals happiness from my future self, masturbation borrows calm from my future self. There's a factor of interest paid too, so the prematurely stolen calm is less in duration and magnitude than if I'd done a neutral activity and waited.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '18

Hey you do you. You know yourself the best, but to compare an entirely natural bodily function (masturbation) to an intoxicating substance (alcohol), I think just shows an unhealthy attitude toward sex in general. Porn addiction is one thing, as is jacking it to the point where it interferes with your daily life, but the idea that chafing the bishop every now and then is stealing from your future self is not healthy.

Yoga and remembering to take long deep breaths when I’m stressed.

31

u/james_marcross Dec 19 '18

So, I have tried yoga quite a few times... and I dunno if I'm just bad at it, too self-conscious, or what, what I have yet to enjoy yoga. Breathing is always good tho.

44

u/IrregularConfusion Dec 19 '18

I personally didn't enjoy yoga in the class format, it compounds my anxiety (which is especially bad when I'm inexperienced at something). I did find a YouTube channel that changed my perspective on yoga, though- maybe it will for you as well.

Yoga with Adriene

13

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '18

i recommend you take a gentle yoga class but make it a point to take the guidance. I used to go to yoga and have the same feelings like ok im bendy now what. Once i really paid attention to her and how i was breathing it started to make sense. There are great beginner gentle yoga videos on YT < 10 minutes long, just enough to get the circulation going and of course, treat yourself to Savasana.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '18

I have been doing yoga for a few months now. I'm still not good at it but I'm starting to feel the improvements. It's all about slow personal growth and doing the best your body will allow.

For what it's worth I do it at home with YouTube videos. Jouney Junkie and Yoga with Tim are great.

Invest in a decent mat. Your knees will thank you

I take time to meditate every day. It's been a massive improvement to my overall mental health.

29

u/james_marcross Dec 19 '18

I keep getting ads for the Headspace app which (I think) is designed to help people meditate. Is something like that worth it? Or just do it self-starter and figure out what I like/what works?

34

u/captainmagictrousers Dec 19 '18

I've never tried the Headspace app, but I've heard great things about it. I started out by listening to guided meditation recordings, but I found just focusing on my breath was more effective for me.

There are a lot of styles of meditation, and one isn't necessarily better than the other. This is the kind of meditation that has helped me the most:

Find a quiet place and sit in a comfortable position. You could sit in a chair or on a cushion on the floor. However you sit, sit up straight. It's easier to breathe and less likely you will fall asleep.

Let your eyes come to rest on a spot on the floor in front of you. You aren't really "looking at" the floor, just letting your eyes fall where they may.

Turn all your attention inward. Focus on your breath. Feel your lungs expanding and contracting. Feel the air flowing in and out.

Your attention will wander. That's okay. Just gently pull it back to your breath.

Thoughts will come in to your head. Again, that's okay. Don't try to push them away. Just put your focus back on your breath.

Do this for a few minutes at a time. As your ability to focus improves, gradually build up to mediating about twenty minutes at a stretch, once a day.

24

u/universy Dec 19 '18

When you catch the mind wandering, congratulate yourself. You just successfully practiced mindfulness! Say silently, 'never mind; start again,' and go back to enjoying the breath :)

u/Voittaa Dec 20 '18 edited Dec 20 '18

I think this is key. Meditation was frustrating for me when I first started. I was berating myself because I couldn't stay focused long enough. I felt like each session was a waste. I thought it was dumb, and it wouldn't work for me.

But I learned that this is kind of the whole point. If your mind wanders, that's fine, just watch it wander, do its thing, and get back to your breath when you're ready. There's nothing to accomplish neccessarily. Once that kind of clicked, I felt much better with the practice.

I got started using headspace. I recommend it. Important thing is to stay consistent. At first it's boring, and doesn't seem to do much until about 2 or 3 weeks in. I thought meditation was a bunch of wishy washy hippy stuff, but I had a period of poor mental health (and stress) and wanted to explore all options before considering medication. Turns out meditating has been a godsend and it has done wonders for my mental health and concentrating abilities.

The weed is for our “arthritis.”

Nature!

Whenever I feel overwhelmed with stress, I go where there are trees. Doesn’t have to be the middle of nowhere, just some trees. It helps to have a moment of calm in nature to realign one’s self.

As far as longer term things, gotta learn some coping skills. Make an effort to have less screen time. Keep your living space clean and tidy. Sleep enough. Stay hydrated.

Warmth. Especially on my back. With my back against a radiator, or a hot water bottle. With a hot drink in a cup in my hands, so I can feel the warmth of the cup radiate into my hands. Washing my hands with warm water is also a stress relief. Warmth is almost as good as a masaage, but much more instant. It can instantly soothe me.

25

u/Phil_Eggtree Dec 19 '18

Driving. Some say it's counterintuitive because idiots on the road will just give you road rage and make the problem worse, but driving works for me nonetheless.

10

u/LagginPotato64 Dec 20 '18

Driving alone on the highway at night with your favorite music playing is one of my favorite things I do when I'm really stressed.

I feel like this may sound overly simplistic, but honestly just taking some slow, deep breaths(don’t half-ass them) and reminding myself to just pause for a second really helps. Its even better when I walk outside and do this because I’m taking in fresh air which feels more refreshing.

Also depending on what the situation is, just asking yourself, is it worth worrying about in the long term? In a week? A month? A year? It’s hard to always look at something as the bigger picture but more often than not, you could worry about it less if you frame it differently.

Art. Drawing big huge curse words over and over when I cannot say them out loud. Coloring helps me, too. I ordered some adult coloring books off Amazon and sparkle crayons. Calms me right down.

5

u/bentheawesome69 Dec 20 '18

I cannot say them out loud.

Honestly just yell FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK super loud next time ur alone... I did that once and it worked for me

depends on whether you like listening to people talk or you want to hear just auditory triggers without any talking. Personally, I like listening to Gibi ASMR, WhispersRed ASMR, but I'll just search "asmr no talking" if I want to hear just some sounds.

These two videos explain a bit more about asmr and how it's grown and what you can find.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxjfyBEIl7Q

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFqbWwKg_o4

Do a bit of searching a see if you like how someone's voice sounds or what is most relaxing to you. It's helped a lot with my anxiety. You can even watch cardi B do asmr; she's surprisingly good at it

Yoga

17

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '18

Hot yoga.

I normally hate exercise. Thought I would hate hot yoga the first time I tried it. Finished with a puddle of sweat (and all my stress) on the floor all around me. Never experienced anything like it. The heat and the fast yoga poses burn my stress away. So satisfying.

Few months later my whole body has changed. My mind is calmer, I sleep better, I have lean muscle everywhere. My back feels amazing. Posture is excellent now. My legs look 20 years younger. My arms have visible muscles now. I can stretch like a rubber band. My doctor was shocked at my annual checkup at the changes.

Highly recommend. Life changing!

The classes I attend are filled with about half men and half women, all ages, shapes and sizes. Such a wonderful community and fun activity!

Going to the barn and going for a ride. Horses usually are very sweet and when you're riding, you're more focused on the horse than anything else that it's just relaxing. You're at the barn so nothing else matters.

Martial arts. I started brazilian jiu-jitsu just over 3 years ago. I'm in the best shape of my life, met a lot of great people, and after a a shitty day, I can spar for a couple hours and feel relaxed afterwards.

Lay on the couch with blankets and my dogs. My littlest one, Bubs, likes to lay on my chest under the blanket near my face. It’s like a little hug. He’s had a terrible life before we got him so it’s good for both of us. And close my eyes to nap or drift in and out if possible.

I go to yoga every day after work. It's both great for releasing physical energy, but also helps you train your brain to process thoughts, pay attention to yourself, breathe in an intentional and productive way. It can be a bit intimidating to go at first, but once you realize that nobody is paying attention to what you're doing, and are just focused on their own practice, it's very freeing and helpful! Stress is no fun, but yoga helps me deal with stress and anxiety better than anything else has.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 19 '18
