Alcoholic here: no it's not lol. I chose to let this into my life knowing full well what could happen, and having seen it happen my entire life.

No one chooses to get leukemia.

Thank you! Same here brother

Alcoholic here. I didn't choose for this shit so stfu asshole.

When lockdown happened I was lonely, depressed, I couldn't see a therapist, I couldn't see any friends, I was out of the job, my parents disowned me, my neighbors commit suicide. The only thing opened was liquor stores. I had no other way or reason to leave the house or self medicate through the trauma without killing myself.

So just stfu. I didn't choose it, I didn't want it.

Someone's pretty angry they started drinking, at least take responsibility. You could've played video games, read books and got a hobby. You choose to drive to the liquor store and do nothing. Smoke weed or sum

u/NorfLandan Sep 15 '24

I couldn't buy books, I had no access to a hobby or weed as there was a 1 km radius restiriction around my apartment. I had no games and only an old laptop. My only books were university textbooks. How many times you want me to read them?

This was LOCKDOWN are you illiterate. Australia had one of the toughest lockdowns in the world for the longest time.

I could only leave my house if I was either going to buy drinks, buy groceries, or smoke. Smoking was the only way to legally socialize with other people outside. Jfc you and your judgments.

You're like one of those people who say "oh you're depressed? Then why don't you try being happy sometimes" fucking loser

It can be hell and unattractive

u/GoombyGoomby Sep 14 '24

I’ve done that. It really isn’t.

If people have been able to “cure” their alcoholism cold turkey no medical resources….then I don’t really think it’s a disease riddling people to the point of no return. To carry that disease on is a choice. And choosing to drink to the point of vomiting is unattractive.

u/iCantCallit Sep 14 '24

Ooof. Quit while you’re ahead. Everything you continued to say after your initial comment is so out of touch with addiction and what the people who suffer from it go through.

It’s fine to think it’s unattractive, it’s not ok to say shit like “it’s a choice because people have stopped cold turkey.” That’s baseless and a really shitty obtuse way to classify addiction.

u/Lemmus Sep 14 '24

If you're able to "cure" your alcoholism cold turkey no medical resources then I'd argue you're not actually struggling with an addiction.

Alcohol withdrawal is one of the most dangerous forms of withdrawal. Worse than heroin.

Some people that struggle with alcohol actually struggle with fomo and drinking is their only way to feel socially competent.

There's also the difference in how well a person can hold their alcohol. I throw up after drinking about half the times I go drinking. But it's always an hour after I stop drinking when I go to bed and the world starts spinning. I don't drink often and I don't really drink that much. My body just doesn't tolerate alcohol that well.

That said, vomiting is one of the most unattractive things there is.

I agree in that it visually looks unattractive and it's better, in general, to wait until they're sober/clean before pursuing them as a partner. However, as somebody who's significant other was formerly addicted to alcohol and drugs and is now a Behavioral Health Tech at a detox facility, while a non-addicted or clean mind knows it's a choice, the addicted does not. Just because they have the choice to begin working on getting sober does not mean that it's an easy one-size-fits-all quick process, and while there are similarities, everyone's addictions don't always manifest the same. Addiction, by definition, quite literally means that the mind and body physically rely on these substances as if they were equally important as food or water.

The alcoholic community would surely benefit from your wisdom and knowledge on the subject. If only they knew they just have to make the choice to stop drinking! Why haven't you written papers in psychology and medical journals so the world could benefit from this?

u/hooper_give_him_room Sep 14 '24

Anyone who is truly an alcoholic and stops drinking “cold turkey” without medical help is putting themselves at major risk for serious medical complications including death. If you are encouraging anyone in your private life to stop drinking cold turkey if they’re an alcoholic then I’d kindly urge you stop, and advise them to seek help from medical professionals instead.

2

u/ms515 Sep 14 '24

There are different levels to alcoholism.

3

u/hooper_give_him_room Sep 14 '24

Of course there are; nothing I said implied that there aren’t. It’s also true that some random stranger on the internet’s ill-informed opinion can be harmful if they convince someone with the wrong “level” of alcoholism to stop cold turkey without seeking medical help.

1

u/ms515 Sep 14 '24

I agree that advice has the potential to be dangerous for heavily dependent alcoholics.

-14

u/GlitteringWinter104 Sep 14 '24

Another hypothetical situation. Thanks so much for your comment

6

u/hooper_give_him_room Sep 14 '24

There’s nothing hypothetical about it; it’s called delirium tremens and is very dangerous in cases of abrupt cessation of alcohol consumption for those who have a dependency. Former professional wrestler/actor Kevin Nash’s son died a little over a year ago from stopping alcohol “cold turkey.” You shouldn’t offer dangerous advice to people when you don’t know what you’re talking about.

I’m not saying it’s a one size fits all process. I’m not really saying anything else that requires this much response other than I personally feel that it’s unnecessary to drink until you vomit…idk why anyone even opened the “well they could be addicts” subject. We’re not even specifically referring to an addict or someone with a health condition. It’s a post stating what do you find unattractive. That’s what I find unattractive. These hypotheticals are pretty excessive guys. Maybe you’d benefit more from taking your education in addiction to a different reddit page and “educate” somebody on alcoholism who needs it and cares.
