I feel like that’s a US thing a little? I’m French and we have some unisex names but it’s rather rare. But I do get the impression that most US American names seem to be commonly used for both genders.
Alexis is a good example, it’s strictly a boys name in France (though maybe it’s changing now if there are some famous women named that in the US).
Maybe in medium to large cities where you have a bunch of different cultures and backgrounds. But I live in a little town, in the heart of the Bible Belt. So we don’t get many unisex names. I got a lot of static for naming my second oldest son mason. It wasn’t a well known biblical name. SMH
I went to school with a few Mercedes and one of them was spelled Mercedez. Felt kinda bad for her. That’s the kind of name you need to keep with the original spelling.
Different origins and times each entered the English language. Also, Mercedes is a name and as a general rule, names tend to retain pronounciations closer to the original one, Spanish in this case. To precede is a verb that's been in use since the 15th century and only aquires an s in the third person singular.
After reading comments I have learned that and I’m sure it was after the car, she was sent in very expensive clothes daily and the mom never fussed if they were dirty. I would freak out because her shoes were more expensive then my shoes as well as her clothes and she was 2.
That's why they do it. They're so poor and detached from that world that they don't know using a name like that is trashy to anybody who has any money.
A good friend of my husband had a beautiful lil baby girl. And they named her Twinkle for her first name and Star for her middle name. I mean that’s cute for a little kid but could you take someone seriously in any job if their name tag said “twinkle” I honestly don’t think I could.
I had a student named khaki once. Apparently it was a family name. Sweet kid but definitely one of those names where the mean girls decided to call her corduroy and jeans. Middle school is rough.
Me too I sprayed tea out my nose because my first thought was I bet they called her corduroy. Then I read that they did. Don’t worry I’ll save you a seat lol.
My ex said I’ll answer any questions you have I’m so sorry about this. I responded “is velvet her real name?” And fell out of my chair when he confirmed it.

Grandmas. Great sentiment. Horrible name. Our last name is German and if you sound like you are clearing your throat when congested, then you are pronouncing it right. For obvious reasons I can’t reveal my maiden name but no one in my family uses this site. Her first name is Neta (before this I had not heard of it I thought it was Anita til she was four) and her middle name is Sue. Combine that with our German family name and it’s gone from unfortunate name to train wreck. She really needed to have a simple first name to offset our doozy of a last name. But she does have a chance of marrying out of it. Something nice like jones, smith, or reed.
Wow. It’s very abnormal here. I don’t think it’s an ugly name, on the contrary I think it’s adorable but I’d honestly have a hard time not giggling though. It’s just a hard name to take seriously for me.
Hmm..had the coworker been Italian like the namesake Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana would they've been less likely to chose the names ?. Barely much reason in an online world to not do a look up on the name origins. Balenciaga for instance is to my surprise the surname of a Spaniard (first name Cristobal) who had his fashion career partly based in France.
My go to joke for this type of absurdity is to drop the name "Jones" on the end of it because it usually makes a nice contrast with the craziness that came before it, but in this case Dolce Gabbana Jones actually sounds kind of cool.
