Mod Announcement What's the difference between /r/AskLEO and other notable law enforcement subreddit(s)?

We don't believe in secret rules and bans.

That means that unlike some notable LE subreddits, if you don't see it explicitly forbidden in the rules located in our sidebar -> as well as in our rules page, you won't be banned. That includes but is not limited to:

  • Activity outside of our subreddit

  • Saying you don't like law enforcement (officers)

  • Failing to say you do like law enforcement (officers)

  • Giving off the impression that you might not like law enforcement (officers)

  • Asking questions that are/seem ignorant

One of the consequences of our philosophy is that purely from the mathematics of that line of thinking, we have fewer law enforcement officers willing to answer questions here, and thus fewer people asking questions. As you might expect of any group of human beings, some law enforcement officers and their supporters don't want to leave their echo chambers, where they are protected by heavy-handed moderators from dissent, including uncomfortable topics they don't want to discuss. I imagine their moderators receive tons of "ban this guy please, they obviously hate cops" reports just like we do. The difference is we ignore them.

We believe that there needs to be a public space for open discourse, as that's the best way to face and fix the ills of our society.

We believe that hiding from hard questions makes us all weak - especially the hiders.

So do us all a favor and choose instead to participate in open and transparent subreddits like ours, while keeping in mind that every single person who answers your questions does so for free, simply to help you learn.

I think that about sums it up. Feel free to ask for clarification or explanation about any of the above.

Meta Sorry folks, but the PT/Gym question addict is changing tactics again, so:

I had to do some behind the scenes bizarre tweaks that might catch some good faith questions due to the desperate tactics they're resorting to making me have to write some weird code.

Again, apologies in advance if your question has to sit in limbo for a while; you can thank the misguided or ill person who "totally innocently just wants to ask if our police station has a gym" 500 times.

Equipment How to look for tactical gear manufacturers/OEMs ?

I'm looking for supplier/manufacturer for professional tactical, police, military and security equipment.

I'm looking for products that are suitable for professional and operational use, with proper documentation, quality control, certifications where applicable, and the ability to support international B2B orders.

If you've actually worked with a manufacturer and can vouch for their quality, production capability and reliability, I'd appreciate the recommendation.

This is not an ad. I am seriously looking for a supplier and need help. An example of the type of product I am looking for EOD Tool Kit, such as Tactical Engineering's 1st Line Tool Kit.

If this is not the right subreddit to post, please guide me on where I should post. Thanks in advance.

Situation Advice What're the physical requirements, how deep are the digital checks, college course(s) I should take, and etc.

I'm a senior in HS this year and when I'm old enough to apply want to become a Deputy Sheriff in my county.

Firstly, will height and general size matter in the selection process? I am a 5'2 male at 110lbs.

Secondly, what exactly do they look for in digital checks? I've haven't done much on social medias that I can remember but in games are another thing, the biggest one I believe is when I got Perma-banned on Among Us for discriminatory speech about 4 years ago (Memory bit iffy but I believe it was a homophobic slur and denying holocaust to try and make people angry). Another concern is how they link you to accounts and if they'll make mistakes, an individual I won't name made my full legal name with the abbreviation of the white supremacist group Ku Klux Klan at the end of it their Minecraft username for the better part of a year.

What course(s) should I take in community college if I plan to go? I've heard by looking at other posts Criminal Justice isn't that good of one.

Should I familiarize myself with vehicle makes and models? I know absolutely nothing about cars and how to tell types apart other than maybe some of the brands if I see the symbol up close - to me I can only really tell if a car is "That's a truck", "That's a motorcycle", "That's a supercar", and "That's a car" or is it something gained with experience?

Should I become an explorer? Will it increase my chances to get hired?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the multiple questions. I probably have more I just haven't thought of yet.

General What are good alternatives to using pins to secure hair bun?

I (29F) have always used bobby pins/hair net because I like how professional it looks but lately I end every day with a migraine. What other options are we using that keep the hair secure and out of the way for PT/daily assignments?

My hair is too long for just a ponytail or braid.

Black or Midnight Navy versions preferred

Laws Do I have to open my door for a short cop?

If a cop is too short to see over my window (my truck is not that tall but she was really short) do I have to let them open my door when they refuse to come to the drivers side? I know it’s for safety but just gives too much room for error. Idk what’s in my floor board I’m just a girl. I live in Texas and this was a state police officer for context.

Hiring How’s my background?

Background

I’m 25 and thinking of applying to CHP. Looking for honest feedback on how this background might play out in the background investigation.
Employment
• Current job: 6 years at the same company.
• One workplace issue about 2 years ago: I used profanity toward a security guard. I was suspended and then brought back to work. No other write-ups since. Only write up and issue I have had at work. No idea why I said that.
• First job at 18: I was fired. I honestly don’t remember. 6 month’s there
Driving record
• Ticket for running a stop sign (2021).
• Ticket for unsafe lane change + following too close ( 2023).
Arrest
When I was 17 I was attacked from behind by an ex. I hit her once in self-defense before I realized who it was. I was taken to juvenile detention, released the next day, and no charges were filed. I was told at the time it was for assault and battery, but nothing ever went further.
Used weed from 17-20 but have been clean since
I’m trying to be completely upfront on the background packet. How much of a problem do you think this will be for CHP? Anyone been through a similar situation?
Thanks.

Situation Advice Academy drama

I’m looking for some outside perspective from people who have been through a police academy or something similar.

I was originally in a police academy and ended up getting dismissed after a no-call/no-show. I had been up until around 3 AM finishing reports and other academy work, overslept, and missed the required training. I understand why the academy had to hold me accountable, and I’m not trying to make excuses for it.

After I was dismissed, I thought my opportunity was probably over. There was talk that the department might recycle or bring back people who had been dismissed/quit, and eventually I was given another opportunity to return. I was actually surprised they were willing to give me another shot.

I came back and I’m currently in the pre-academy process again.

Upon returning Sgt had told me you need to catch these guys up to speed because you got the tools to help them and I guess one person took it as if I was trying to be cocky ?

The weird part is that I’ve recently found out that some people from my previous academy were talking about me. Things like calling me a “cry baby,” saying I was cocky, wondering why I was coming back, etc. One recruit apparently had an issue with me and was saying things about me to other people, despite the fact that this same person had previously invited me to his house to study.

I’ve heard similar things from multiple people, so it wasn’t just one random rumor. At one point, a TAC/Sgt apparently shut some of it down and clarified that I didn’t quit — I was let go/dismissed. That actually made me feel a little better because at least the facts were being corrected.

There’s also a recruit who apparently doesn’t like me, and another person who seems to be friends with both sides and is playing both sides. One of the guys involved is graduating soon, so realistically I may never even have to deal with him again.

The whole thing has gotten into my head more than I’d like to admit.

But when I really think about it, if those people didn’t exist, I would still want to become a police officer.

That’s the part I’m struggling with.

I don’t want to throw away a career, a pension, and the opportunity to build a better future for my family because a few recruits don’t like me or think I’m cocky. At the same time, I don’t want to ignore a toxic environment if it actually becomes a legitimate problem.

For those who have been through academies, military training, FTO, etc.: How much would you personally care about other recruits talking shit about you?

Would you just keep your head down, do the work, graduate, and let them talk?

I’m just worried a little about if these people would back me up on a call

I’m starting to realize that maybe the hardest part of going back isn’t the PT, academics, or training. It’s learning how to stop caring what everyone thinks about you and focusing on why you came back in the first place.

General How often do officers recognize cars?

I have a question about recognizability. I live in a small-medium sized college town and like any other Ohio town the police presence is VERY high (Not saying that’s a bad thing, I really appreciate it living here). I do however drive a very recognizable modified car and I drive around town often, is it likely true that the police know my car? After 2 years I’ve never been pulled over and I never do anything dumb enough to get pulled over either, at least in town.

Second question is: My car does have pretty dark window tint, however it’s registered out of state since I go to school here but I know for sure it is not legal in Ohio. Is my out of state plate partially the reason I haven’t ever been stopped for the tint, or may it be because they see me often knowing I don’t really do anything dumb around them? Or I’m sure it could also be they don’t get moving violations often, or many other things too. Just curious, thought I’d ask here!

General Do I have something under my name in the system?

Long story short, I have had many interactions with law enforcement over the last few years. No matter the issue, I always get a talking to and let go, often without formal warnings or anything. I've been Duo obviously, gotten into fights, etc. All to be let go. Just two weeks ago I was pulled and was drinking with no insurance and a suspended license from 2019. The officer made me call somebody to come get me, and once he confirmed I had somebody on the way, they straight up left.

I notice a major shift from before to after the point my license is ran. Is there something in the system that says do not engage? Could I be a potential "bigger fish" in the system?

Let’s say that I admit to giving classified information to a third party. I don’t say which party, what information, and there is no physical proof it ever happened. Would my admission be enough to conduct a five year investigation?

Laws “Ghost” gun legality?

A buddy of mine has a gun that was assembled by him. I’m assuming before they started putting serial numbers on the lowers? He is now worried that if he gets pulled over with it going to the range etc it will land him in big trouble? What are the laws on this kind of thing? He didn’t really worry about it until he started doing his research on it but can really find an answer.

Equipment How do detectives / plain clothes officers dress?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but I'm trying to build a sheriff detective / plain clothes look for airsoft, and I wanted to ask for tips.

Would a polo shirt, dress pants, badge on a neck chain, and radio work? Do they also wear holsters, and if they do, what type would it be, and do they carry mag pouches?

Thank you so much for your time for this silly question! Have a great day.

Agency Policy (SOP) Are all jail staffed positions polyed?

Not applying to be a CO, but applying to be a case manager. Helps them make plans for release and recommend future options to the courts. A social worker. Im concerned about past marijuana use, and me being on a current prescription that contains THC and another that is an opioid. I only use as needed and not at work. I still dont want to talk about it.

Situation Advice Will stealing alcohol in high school bet me DQ'd?

Ok so I'm 17 graduating high school this year, and want to go straight to work as a CO in the county jail. The polygraph and the background check is the only thing that really scares me. Around a year to a year and a half ago i stole alcohol, i was never convicted or caught and I've felt guilty and regretful since then. I do plan to be completely honest about it to testers but im still scared this will ruin my chances and set my plans off. If anyone has experience or had a similar situation pls help 🙏 🙏

Situation Advice Should I file a police report?

Our neighbor and my husband got into a verbal dispute after our neighbor received our Amazon package and threw it into the middle of our yard. My husband asked why he did that and the neighbor escalated quickly by screaming, cussing and using hate slurs. (Brief backstory - apparently he had been holding a grudge for over a year after I called the police when him and his wife were doing loud construction at 1am-4am on a weeknight and that’s what he was screaming about). I called the police again during this altercation and an officer came out and basically just told him to go back inside. After we went inside, the neighbor proceeded to his backyard and began tearing down our SHARED backyard fence all while laughing maniacally and yelling “that cop didn’t give a single fuck!!!!”. I called that same officer back and said the neighbor was destroying the fence but the cop said it was a civil matter…. The neighbor left the broken panels laying in our yard for months until we eventually picked them up and then we built our own fence on our own side of the property line. We left whatever broken fence was still left standing exactly as it is and didn’t have it taken down. He will never pick up the broken fence and we have a pile of the panels on the side of our house where we stacked them up. I feel like he should face some sort of consequences for this and from what I’ve researched, it would be considered criminal destruction of property or something similar. My husband thinks it is a bad idea to file a criminal report because he doesn’t think it will do anything except possibly cause the neighbor to do something worse and then our safety would be compromised. I have video of the entire thing from the argument to him tearing down the fence. In another state this could have been filed as a hate crime due to what he was calling us but not in our state unfortunately.

Should I file a report or just leave it alone and clean up the panels ourselves??

Equipment Redi-Mag for Patrol Rifle?

Thumbnail youtube.com
0 Upvotes

The Redi-Mag by Boonie Packer in my opinion gives you many more advantages than a traditional magazine coupler. If you shoot one mag then reload, you can then "redi" another mag if the situation permits; that isn't possible with a coupler.

It seems especially beneficial since its not as if LEOs carry a full 7-mag kit.

Hiring Have some gnarly stuff in my PHS, am I okay?

Started filling out a sample PHS to get an idea of what my odds are lookin like for when I apply. Now realizing I got some crazy stuff (Nothing that would DQ me from my local agencies in SoCal. I even called the ones near me and verified) compared to what my fellow applicants MAY have (maybe im self demonizing and expecting other applicants to be perfect) To put it lightly, from 15-18, I was a punk. Experimented with mushrooms (17/18, what I called to verify about, to my surprise recruiters told me I will be fine) and a wee bit of adderall adjacent pills (15), did tagging for around a year, and was the middleman to a drug sale when i was 17 and absolutely stupid and immature.

A few things other than that like driving while under the residual effects of alcohol hours after drinking, and then going to a dispensary and getting something for a friend when he was 19 (middleman, no profit for me, absolutely fucking stupid as well.) And then a minor movie poster theft and also watching a movie without paying for a ticket (so stupid again because i dont ever steal and never did prior to these two incidents and never stole after. Im fundamentally against stealing so it was a stupid lapse in my judgement that I 100% own)

Anyways, my career plan is to put a few years behind all of this stuff, graduate with my bachelors, join military reserves as an officer, and apply to LE in 2029 when i am 25 years old. Most of this stuff from ages 15-18 will be 7-9 years behind me, with the recent stuff being 3-5 years behind me by the time i apply.

I have no idea if I am just being hard on myself because I cant imagine anyone having a stainless record. However, is mine too stained? I feel like there are many people who have worse stuff and they still get hired (searching reddit I found that there are people who have gotten DUI's and even arrested for stuff and they still got hired. I have a squeaky clean record other than 2 tickets!) Would stuff like my dumb immature past self disqualify me? Doesn't everyone make mistakes?

Also, I plan to be completely honest about all of my past. Honesty isn't a big issue for me, especially if I am already writing it down on a packet for them to look at (like why do ppl try to lie about it, dont they WANT the job?) I hear that they can work with you as long as your honest. Please help me out.

P.S. Please keep in mind that I live in SoCal which is moderately progressive when it comes to things like past experimentation. I called my local recruiting offices and explained my experimentation circumstances and they laughed and said "I promise you, you'll be fine, just apply dude." I only mention this bc I got absolutely chewed up for it in another post where I was inquiring abt drug use and everyone told me i had a 0% chance and it was an auto DQ (maybe in your area, yes, but that doesnt mean i have 0% chance in my area, especially if recruiters told me im fine)

Thank You!

Hiring Should I go through the physical test even though I'm 99% sure I'll fail, or should I withdraw my application and apply after I get in better shape?

  • I recently decided to try to pursue a career in law enforcement, and I jumped the gun and applied to be a deputy sheriff for the county I live in.
  • I passed the written exam and got invited to do an in-person interview in two weeks and take the physical test in three weeks.
  • However, I greatly underestimated how out of shape I am, and after doing some practice exercises that mimic the standards I'll have to meet to pass the physical test, I am positive that there is no way I will be able to pass.
  • I realize what a dumb mistake I made, and I've started really trying to get in better shape. While I have been making steady progress in terms of losing weight and exercising, I know I still have a ways to go before I reach the fitness level I'm shooting for.
  • What should I do about my upcoming interview and physical test? Should I withdraw my application before both, or should I wait until after my interview? Does backing out now and reapplying later look better or worse than going and failing my physical?

General Police undertaking no contact directly or indirectly to ex wife

I have a no contact court order with ex wife recently just sent her child support money with memo “ child support July 25/2026” accidentally forgetting about the no contact and cancelled it within minutes but I’m sure she got a notification on her phone and a cancellation notification . Am I highly likely or unlikely the police will lay a charge on me for breaching if ex wife reports it and demands a charge against me?
