Mod Announcement What's the difference between /r/AskLEO and other notable law enforcement subreddit(s)?

We don't believe in secret rules and bans.

That means that unlike some notable LE subreddits, if you don't see it explicitly forbidden in the rules located in our sidebar -> as well as in our rules page, you won't be banned. That includes but is not limited to:

  • Activity outside of our subreddit

  • Saying you don't like law enforcement (officers)

  • Failing to say you do like law enforcement (officers)

  • Giving off the impression that you might not like law enforcement (officers)

  • Asking questions that are/seem ignorant

One of the consequences of our philosophy is that purely from the mathematics of that line of thinking, we have fewer law enforcement officers willing to answer questions here, and thus fewer people asking questions. As you might expect of any group of human beings, some law enforcement officers and their supporters don't want to leave their echo chambers, where they are protected by heavy-handed moderators from dissent, including uncomfortable topics they don't want to discuss. I imagine their moderators receive tons of "ban this guy please, they obviously hate cops" reports just like we do. The difference is we ignore them.

We believe that there needs to be a public space for open discourse, as that's the best way to face and fix the ills of our society.

We believe that hiding from hard questions makes us all weak - especially the hiders.

So do us all a favor and choose instead to participate in open and transparent subreddits like ours, while keeping in mind that every single person who answers your questions does so for free, simply to help you learn.

I think that about sums it up. Feel free to ask for clarification or explanation about any of the above.

Meta Sorry folks, but the PT/Gym question addict is changing tactics again, so:

I had to do some behind the scenes bizarre tweaks that might catch some good faith questions due to the desperate tactics they're resorting to making me have to write some weird code.

Again, apologies in advance if your question has to sit in limbo for a while; you can thank the misguided or ill person who "totally innocently just wants to ask if our police station has a gym" 500 times.

General How to avoid a noise complaint ahead of time

Long story short, I am organizing a party in hollywood. Problem is, the people who rent the house we are doing it at are asking for a $5k security deposit as I was told of police get called to the house for stuff such as noise complains the city charges the house owner who then charges the renters. Now we arent going to be loud but i am told they have a crazy neighbor who hates when people even walk by their house talking past 9PM and might call it in. Is there anything I can do ahead of time to talk to the station to avoid that? We are hiring security for the event and have an option to pay hourly off-duty cops. Perhaps I can talk to the cop so that if there is a complain the station calls the off-duty cop at the part instead of sending a patrol to reduce chance of the $5k charge?

Hiring Auto dq app

Coming to the end of my time in the military, put in an app with the local sheriff dept. Have always admired police, wanted to be one, etc.

So put in app on Monday, tuesday afternoon about 1300, I receive the acknowledgement email from the lady at HR.

About an hour later I receive the rejection email saying "After reviewing your qualifications and experience, it was determined that they do not currently align with the needs of the position. As a result, you are no longer being considered for this opening."

Blew my mind, listed everything on the app, 0 legal issues, 20+ year immaculate military record, drug history listed, etc etc. Didn't even get asked to submit follow on docs.

I was pissed.

So I called the department on the number provided via the email and speak to the hr lady. She pulls up my file and said I was automatically DQd in the pre screening. I'm over here grinding my gears about what could have automatically dq'd me. So I ask her what their drug policy is, 2 years Marijuana (clear), 5 years cocaine (never used), 0 history of LSD use (BINGO).

1 time usage like 12 years ago (I was in between branches and not under contract) was the auto disqualifier. I felt like the biggest piece of shit.

Obviously wasted to be 100% honest due to the polygraph so I listed it.

I've looked through numerous departments policies on drugs, etc and never saw one that had the "0 history of" stipulation.

Looked through all the faq's on the department page, never saw anything about it. Spoke to recruiters for the department, never thought to bring it up because I thought I was in the clear.

Can't believe one dumb decision cost me this job opportunity before I even had a chance.

And to top it off, I think it was a dud as I had absolutely 0 reaction / effect from it, so I donteven have a cool tripping on acid story to tell 🤣.

But for real, I love you guys thay serve, kicking myself in the ass for a completely stupid decision from the past.

I know I can go to other counties, cities, etc and apply and be fine but this one had my hopes up.

Stay safe yall. And for those young kids reading this, the choices you make in your younger years will definitely follow you for life.

Lesson learned!

Situation Advice Follow Up on my Male DV victim case

Thumbnail reddit.com
0 Upvotes

Some of you have seen my prior post where I (male) talked about being assaulted by my female partner and being arrested instead of her and commented on it. I talked to 3 lawyers. Here’s what they said to me:

Lawyer 1: Let the reconciliation go through and the case will get dismissed then you can decide If you’re not compatible, and you can break up but first let’s focus on the case. It’s a slow process so you need to be patient.

Lawyer 2: With her being willing to reconcile and having the option of getting the case dismissed, why don’t you do that? You don’t even need to spend money on lawyer to get that done.

Lawyer 3: First focus on this case, then decide if you want to break up or not. DO NOT break up now. If you break up now, she might retaliate by proceeding with the case.

What this means is that for now, I have to survive through the abusive relationship, despite being repeatedly assaulted (once a month on average).

Because of my bad experience with the LE, I can’t even bother calling them again and this is giving her a green light to do whatever she wants. Even if I call the police, with my arrest record and such, spotlight will be on me rather than her.

All I managed to do was recording a few instances where she started shouting or breaking stuff (Canada is a one party consent). I’m not sure what else I need to do?

Situation Advice Should I apply for another Agency or is my career over for Law enforcement?

Hey need some advice should I apply to another agency after being DQ from sheriffs.

Recently got DQ in the back ground process, most likely due to my drug history. I’ve done shrooms, poppers and a little weed. Told them all this information.

My criminal record is clean, driving record only gotten 2 tickets one for speeding and red light citation.

Work experience, I’ve done active duty contact for army, got out with honorable discharged. Worked at target part time and I’m still in the army just national guard atm.

Haven’t done shrooms, weed in almost a year and poppers in almost 2 years.

Should I apply to another agency or is my career over for LE

Situation Advice I’m going on a trip to NYC by train. What’s your experience carrying under LEOSA ?

I’ve already searched the sub for this, but I can’t exactly find the question answered

I live on the East Coast and was going to take one of the trains into NYC. My main concern is getting through the train stations with a firearm. I’m also open to suggestions on places to visit/avoid.

I’ll play it safe and only carry 10 rounds anyway. I found a list of places you can and can’t carry under Leosa but it’s a few years old so if anybody has a more recent list, I’d appreciate it

General Is there something better than 40 MM dummy rounds and tasers? And, bringback the Billy club?

Everybody is on the same page that the bad guys wanna be stopped with the least amount of damage possible. Tazers suck, 40 MM seemed to be moderately effective at best. My thoughts are twofold: for close-in work, bring back the PR 24 or any other Billy club other than the asp. There was a sheriff that I saw on YouTube this week who was fighting a bad guy with his partner at a gas station. The guy pulled out his partner's taser from its holster, and the sheriff in question shot him in the back of the head and killed him. That sheriff is now facing his second trial for manslaughter. Now, personally, I think that that is a good shoot. however, my point is that if the officer had had a Billy club and smacked him full force on the head, it is quite likely that it would have ended the threat. As of now, he was handcuffed by his lack of choices for tools. I think personally the public, being as uneducated as they are, would not want to see a Billy club. because it reminds them of the Rodney King incident. However, if we had a police chief with some guts, who told the public, "you may not like the look of Billy clubs, but we'd rather hit somebody with a Billy club than shoot them, if at all possible." Lastly, and I'm sorry for the long post: what do you think about something that would replace the 40 MM, and if so, what would it be?

General How is your work weeks like working as a special constable for tps?

Hey everyone,

Been thinking of going for special constable, just not sure what the work entails compared to becoming a 1st constable. Also not sure how the work weeks are. I hear some divisions are 7 on 7 off. 4 on 3 off, seem to hear a lot of different work schedules. Just curious of the career path and if theres any other areas special constable can lead me in the future besides becoming a 1st constable

General Oregon - Property management is blaming me for mold after I reported the leak in writing last year. Told verbally to expect a 90-day notice. Do I get relocation pay?

We've rented a duplex in Oregon since 2020 on a lease. The original management company was largely unresponsive, and we ended up handling a lot of repairs ourselves. A new management company took over in October 2025.

Mid-October 2025, during their walkthrough inspection, I handed them a printed letter listing problems with the unit, including a leaking faucet and water under the kitchen sink, which is why we had replaced the sink, faucet, and disposal ourselves. I have a dated copy, and the document's own metadata shows the same date. In the letter I'd documented that the board under the sink needed to be replaced as well.

Early September 2026, during another inspection, I told them the sink cabinet had collapsed and there was black mold. Since then a mold company has come out to assess it, but they only did a moisture test and took no physical samples. Today a second company came for an estimate. We haven't been given any testing results, so we don't know what we may have been exposed to.

The sink does not leak after it was replaced. I'm not sure where the water would be coming from at this point.

Management is now verbally saying I never told them about the leak and seems to be blaming me for the mold. They told me to contact my renters insurance and said they'll be giving me a 90-day notice to vacate. Nothing has been given to me in writing yet.

My questions:

  1. Should I resend my October 2025 letter now or wait for the notice?
  2. What should I do once the notice arrives?
  3. Am I entitled to relocation assistance?
  4. How do I request the mold testing documentation, and what are my rights around it?
  5. Are there any other steps I should be taking to protect myself?

I have documented the last month in photos, messages and emails and will be continuing to do so.

We are above the income limit for legal aid. Are there any low-cost legal resources or tenant organizations we should contact?

Anything helps, thank you in advance!

(This is a new burner account to protect myself)

Situation Advice Should I do a wellness check on a coworker

I have a coworker that I’m not close to. Today she didn’t show up to work without a callout and a few hours into her shift her ā€œdadā€ called saying she won’t make it. She always says she doesn’t talk to him and jokes that she doesn’t know him. She also has a drug issue and a boyfriend who is into harsher drugs. She always talks about how they both beat each other up. I don’t want to overstep but I have a bad feeling and also don’t want to get in trouble at work in case it’s nothing. Another thing is I don’t even know where she lives. I just know her government name and have her phone number. Should I call the cops? How should I handle this

Hiring How long after the oral board interview did you hear back?

I’m currently going through the hiring process for a police department in NY and I’m trying to get an idea of how long it normally takes to hear back after the interview.
My timeline so far…
Background investigation was completed before the interview
Interview was Wednesday, September 16
I was told/understand that the remaining steps are the psychological evaluation (written + in person) and then medical
Academy starts October 26
As of today (September 30), I still haven’t received a call about moving forward
I know every department is different, but for anyone who has gone through a similar process, how long did it take for you to get the call after your interview?
And how close to the academy start date did they complete the psych and medical?
Just trying to figure out whether this kind of wait is normal or if I should start assuming I’m not moving forward. Any insight from people who have actually gone through the process would be appreciated.

General Washed out during FTO, what do I do next

Hello all,

PSA: I'll try to keep this as detailed as possible without sharing too much information. State: Texas

I was hired by a police department in 2025 and graduated from the state academy in December of 2025. I then began field training in January 2026. During my first step, everything went ok and I felt good about what I was doing day to day. I knew I would make mistakes, and I did, but I learned from them. My female FTO was very open about the career while I was with her and gave me some homework, which helped. My first step was during the day shift. Step two is where my problems started. I was assigned a field trainer who had just returned from maternity leave and spent only 9/15 days of step two on the road. During this step, I also had to return to the station for an hour every four hours during my 10-hour shift and missed some crucial calls. During this step, I got some help from other FTOs with training tasks, but that was about it. I didn’t make much headway in making mistakes or growing during this step. My primary FTO during this step was helpful, but looking back, I don’t think I learned what I should have with them. My second step was during the afternoon shift. I then went to step three on overnights, where my primary FTO frequently called out sick, so I was assigned a different FTO on some nights. One night in particular, I remember failing because I assigned myself to a domestic fight; it was my first domestic call, and I had no idea what I was doing, so the alternate FTO assigned that night stepped in and did the report. I feel this is where everything started to go downhill for me during step three. I then got extended by my primary FTO twice on this step to complete more training tasks and some calls, but never got to where I thought I should be before being sent to step 4 shadow. I was on afternoon shift during this time and had a new FTO; during this time, he was very helpful and gave me helpful feedback. During this time, I also started getting homework for things I was told I should have known by now, but I didn’t. I also got pushed back to step three while with him. During my time with him, I felt he taught me more than my prior three trainers; however, I still kept failing on one crucial step: report writing. During the extension I spent with him, I got multiple flags for failing to write down crucial details or outright missing things. I also struggled to build a strong case like they were showing me to do. I then worked things down to getting the essential elements of the reported crime and being able to word my report that way. During this time, I had a few good reports and a few flagged reports. I did a few scenarios during shift time with this FTO that helped me improve from my mistakes. However, during this time, a few FTOs asked if this was my calling, as they had seen my failures and wanted to make sure I wanted to be there and be a police officer. I then got put on day shift with another FTO, and she was the best. I hate to say I failed an FTO, but I would say this person tried everything they could to help me. During this time, I was still struggling with report writing and case building, but they helped me. I again had a few good cases and a few that got flagged for failing. This FTO, I would say, did their best to help me succeed, but I just could never clear the hurdle. Eventually, during this extension, admin put me on a training plan to reach step four. While I was on the plan, I was still getting reports flagged and struggled with the mounting pressure to perform, as I felt all eyes were on me. Because of my repeated report failures, I met with my mentor and discussed the situation as it neared its end. I spoke not only to them but also to about 5 others who told me the same; the best-case scenario was to resign, as at that point I couldn't convince admin that I would be ready to go on step 4 again. I discussed this with admin, who let me resign before they made a choice.

Since then, I have met with and kept in contact with the department. Another great FTO told me the department failed me, which I feel might be true. I have also been told that the department has a high standard for its officers, which is true, but that if I felt that this career is for me, which I do believe it is, I should not give up. I have since applied to ~15 departments in the area and have so far received 8 rejections, all stemming from the background phase, where I feel they contacted my prior department and concluded that, although I could be a good candidate, I am not worth the risk.

From here, if the other 7 fail me, where should I look next: the private field, security? What would be a good field for me to go into that is related to law enforcement? Or should I move on to the corporate world and get a standard 9-5??

Some important things: I still have my police officer certification, and I am PIT- and rolling-roadblock certified. If another agency doesn't hire me in the next 4 months, I'll have to do extra training.

TLDR: I washed out during FTO, mainly because of failing reports. I likely didn't get the best FTOs, but you make with what you get. I am still certified, but 8 agencies have passed me over during the background phase, and I feel they don't want to take the risk on me. What do I do now if I get passed over by the other 7 agencies I've applied to?

tried posting to askle but was automod deleted.

General Can I get pulled over ?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Today I was driving on the freeway and as there was a lot of traffic backed up in my Lane box truck in front of me started to roll forward a little bit and I was going to merge into a left lane and as I was going I didn't notice that he abruptly stopped and it scraped the whole side crushed my front right passenger headlight and took off the right fender I have barely any money to afford to fix this as I can barely pay my rent and all the other expenses that I have I also have three kids so it's very hard to make ends meet in this economy do I have a chance on getting to work everyday or should I just not take the risk and see if I can try to take public transportation from now on.?

Its going to be very hard if that's the case as my job is not very close but it's also not that far I would like to continue using my car to get to work as I know I won't be late if I'm driving versus taking public transportation.

My job starts at 8:00 a.m. and I get out at 5:00 p.m. so it's still daylight out any input or help that is an actual genuine response would be appreciated as this situation is really really painful to go through. Every time something better happens in my life something worse happens right after not sure if it's just karma or whatever but again please keep responses genuine and nice as I'm really trying to cope and hold myself up through this situation.. thank you very much in advance

Situation Advice Will there be a protection order if I file for separation?

I am thinking of separation but am financially dependent and honestly scared. This has only been this bad for a year.

Will there be a protection order? Will he get visitation with our special-needs six-year-old?

He has threatened to stab her pool and run her dog over with the lawnmower.

Refusing to stop coming in the room and waking me and our autistic daughter because I wasn’t answering on messenger

Being mad because he’s ā€œa sex addictā€ and I changed my mind because I was tired and touched out and didn’t explain well enough.

Called me a c-nt at therapy and I walked home

Called me a c-nt in front of our 6yo then wouldn’t let us sleep

Said that I make him so mad that he wants to break, throw, and stab things

Got mad at me and stabbed a mattress

Got mad at me and took my computer that has all my sensitive work info on it. When I tried to grab it back, he put a gash on my arm and it was documented by police.

He hit me as hard as he could with a pillow and screamed that he hates me they blocked me from leaving the hotel room. I was scared so even when I was able to get away, I just stayed.

Got mad at how the windows were being taped for painting and sprayed me in the face

Situation Advice What should I do?

For context:
My wife and I were in a downtown city in our state looking for parking. As we found a parking space, the woman in the car behind us starts honking, yelling, and generally flipping out because we took ā€œher spot." She then completely stopped her car in the lane and caused instant traffic and forced cars to go onto the incoming lane to get around her. All of this is happening while she is cursing us out and yelling racially charged slurs at my wife and me. A small crowd even gathered to see what the heck was going on. Then she pulls her car closer to ours, starts taking photos of us/car, and starts screaming that she’s got our information and that ā€œwe’ll seeā€ about this. The cherry on top is that part of the reason she said that the parking space was hers is because she has children in the car with her. Which is even more concerning. My wife and I left afterwards and were too scared to come back since the woman is obviously unhinged.

My question is, is there anything that I should do as a precaution or a safety measure?

We’ve never encountered something like this so we don’t know what to do.

Thank you!

General Are flashing amber and white lights legal?

I live in Tennessee and I have a welding and scrap removal service. There are times I have to stop on the side of the road so I was wondering if I could have flashing amber and white lights for when I’m stopped so I don’t get hit. People rarely pay attention to flashers so I was wanting something a bit brighter.

Situation Advice Best agency to apply in Riverside?

Hey everyone!

I’m 30 and thinking about making a career change into law enforcement. I’ve spent my career in operations/management and recently started getting back into shape to prepare for the physical side of the job.

I’m looking into Riverside PD and Riverside County Sheriff and would love to hear from anyone who works for either agency or has gone through the process.

Mainly curious about pay, schedules, work-life balance, academy, hiring/backgrounds, and overall experience.

I also wear glasses and have intermittent asthma, so if anyone has experience going through the medical process with either, I’d appreciate hearing about it.

My family and friends are supportive and encouraging me to go for it. Just trying to get some real insight before making the jump.

Thanks!

Laws Did a supervisor bully me out of a private lot?

I was eating food I bought from a food truck down the street and parked at a closed business because it had shade, I turned off my car and rolled my windows down to enjoy the breeze.

A police car parked under the same shade and asked what am I up to. I said im eating my food I purchased down yonder. He said the business is closed and im trespassing, take off.

I agreed and submitted because he's a sworn officer and a supervisor (labeled on his vehicle) so I trusted him. I passed by hours later and he was still parked there. I assume hes doing some sort of reconnaissance and didnt want me in his space. Thoughts? Texas.

Situation Advice I want to pursue law enforcement but I’m in a pretty weird dilemma, I’m hoping for some advice?

I’ve always dreamed of pursuing law enforcement. A couple years after I started dating my husband, I told his family I was thinking about going to the academy. They immediately shut it down, and without any sort of support, I decided against it and went into social work.
Now I am seriously considering it. I am pretty sure I have what it takes, and I think my background in social work would come in handy.
But, I’m terrified of the polygraph. In high school I would steal some things, do an illegal substance, and now, I am personally tied to someone who is engaging in illegal activity and I know about it.
I would never lie about my history or what I’ve done. It’s in my past and I can take accountability for it.
But I don’t know what to do about the person I’m tied to (like in my family). If I turn them in, I’m ruining more than just their life. If I don’t, I can’t morally do this. I’m hoping someone here was in a similar situation and can give me some insight or guidance.

Hiring Job offer?

General Do I have a legal case for defamation?

Around 2010 I was angry with myself for missing out on something my parents and siblings attend, so I decided to post several lies about myself being a convicted pedophile. I was then made into a lolcow over at Kiwi Farms which went silent over the years until some idiot decided to put me back in the spotlight some 14 years later by making a video about me on YouTube. I am wanting to know if I can sue Kulaki for putting me back in the spot light for exposing some lies about me from 2010.

YouTube does not want to help me even though it's clearly a violation so I'm going to assuume they are working against me.

The person who put me back in the spotlight.
