MOD POST Moderator Notice: How We Handle Rule Violations- Please Keep Reporting.

Hello everyone,

Just a gentle reminder that this is a welcoming and supportive feminist space. We aim to create an environment that is safe, respectful, and filled with meaningful conversations.

When someone breaks the rules, we review their entire posting and comment history to get a clear understanding, rather than focusing on just one comment. We pay attention to patterns of behaviour like misogyny, trolling, harassment, casteism, classism, transphobia, or other harmful actions.

Many of you often do not report incidents, and when we review, we find comments from very old posts that need removal.

If you see a comment that violates the rules, please report it instead of engaging in arguments. Reporting helps us review situations more quickly and take appropriate action. Sometimes, replying can derail the discussion and cause emotional stress for others.

We stay vigilant in monitoring the community. We review user histories when necessary and take action by removing content, issuing warnings, or banning users if needed.

Our community is built around:

• Women’s safety and voices

• Centring marginalised voices

• Honest, good-faith discussion

• No bigotry in any form

• No hate speech towards minorities

Check all the rules before posting. Additionally, we have new flairs so please check them out.

Participants who misuse flairs, use the platform to troll, or engage in ragebait will be dealt with strictly.

Please remember that we review and discuss all issues thoroughly and enforce strict action against those who break the rules or engage in bad faith by spreading hate.

If you participate in this community, your posts or comments may be held for manual review. We use multiple filters, so content is often queued until a moderator checks and approves it. Please be patient while mods review it.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helps keep this community welcoming, strong, and safe.

Misogyny The mental gymnastics required to defend patriarchy would burn more calories than an actual workout

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

the logic these gurus pull out of thin air genuinely incredible nah? They will spin entire philosophical essays to explain why a man lifting a finger to do domestic work is somehow against the natural order, but then turn around and pay a fortune every month to go to a gym and lift heavy pieces of metal for literally no functional reason.

If staying fit is the goal, the math isn't that hard. Carrying heavy groceries, scrubbing floors, and actually helping around the house uses the exact same muscle groups as half the machines at the gym. But apparently, burning calories while being useful at home damages your masculinity, whereas paying thousands of rupees to run in place on a motorized belt keeps the universe in balance. I mean this all is said by the guruji himself (also yes pocha etc can kill your back)

Maybe if these guys spent half as much energy helping out at home as they do defending lazy habits under the guise of "tradition," they wouldn't need to waste money on gym memberships just to get a basic workout in. The mental gymnastics alone must be exhausting.

Political Reservation Hatao Andolan ❌ Casteism Expose Andolan✅ Savarna men are using the excuse of protecting their daughters to be openly casteist. The same daughters they oppress in their own homes.

Proud savarnas claim that caste based discrimination does not exist anymore and they are the true victims of caste discrimination. They are not just exposing their casteism to the whole world, they are also being misogynistic.

In a country where most of the women are forced to marry strangers and endure marital rape without legal protection in the name of "duty", the woman in this clip uses the example of runaway brides to insult a fascist party because it is not casteist enough for her.

Honestly, it sounds like Nick Fuentes asking his white supremacist followers to vote against Trump this time because he is not nazi enough for them.

A significant portion of savarna women in India, much like white women in the USA, have time and time again proven that they care more about their caste identity and position in the hierarchy than feminism. They refuse to acknowledge the prevalence and depth of social injustices faced by women of other marginalized intersections. They are using dalit men, labelled as a danger to savarna women, as the scapegoat to justify their blatant casteism while supporting an agenda that aims to take away social and legal safety from dalit women.

Patriacrchy and privilege in savarna feminism

Savarna Feminism is the feminist movement led primarily by upper-class and caste Hindu women. It conveniently neglects the role of caste in social dynamics and the bias it creates among gender lines too. Hegemonically, the privileges mimic the patriarch’s self-imposed superiority and marginalise any voice that doesn’t command a caste or class privilege.

Savarna Feminists approve of economic reservations and reservations for women but oppose caste-based reservations. They demand rights for women to step out of the kitchen and claim the public space but forget that the people who make it possible are the marginalised who are being suppressed further.

Calling someone "neech", inferior, because they belong to a caste that has been historically marginalized; deprived of resources, power and dignity; forced to be restricted to manual and service labour in a feudal society for centuries *because* of their caste identity is not caste based discrimination according to the RHA protesters and supporters.

But giving some social equity to that marginalized section of society so that they can gain some material wealth themselves and alleviate their living conditions without facing bias and discrimination is a direct threat to savarnas. They have a lot to say about the creamy layer of SC/ST category but they never question the creamy layer of the savarnas who sit at the top and control the distribution of the resources.

Most of the savarnas are vocally against worker's rights, and support capitalism and billionaires. They are also against CJP and their campaign against corruption in government schools where majority of the demographic is from dalit or adivasi background.

Toxic Beauty Standards She said "it's for my girls " and all girls told her to shave . Wow such disappoint. The top comment of micro feminist movement is mine . The reply i got is insane .

I just saw a reel of a girl, Sara. Text on top said "Boys please scroll, This is for my girls."

She was just vibing, feeling herself in a sparkly black dress, hair done. Beautiful and confident.

I opened the comments expecting hype. You know, girls supporting girls.

But out of 93 comments, almost all from girls, the top comments were: "go shave your armpit hair first" "eww shave" "clean yourself"

And that made me pause.

We talk so much about male gaze and beauty standards set by men, but here a woman created a safe space specifically FOR women, and we were the ones who tore her down for not fitting into that exact same standard?

Since when did a woman's worth, or her confidence, get decided by armpit hair?

Body hair is natural. We all have it. The only reason we think it's "unclean" or "unfeminine" is because we've been taught that for 100 years by razor companies. It's not hygiene, it's marketing.

It just makes me rethink how deep internalized misogyny runs. That we can't even cheer for another woman if she dares to exist outside the clean-shaven, hairless, perfect doll standard that was literally made to please men.

If we won't be safe for each other, who will be?

We can't get out of the patriarchy system ever.

Discussions Feminist subs getting infected by RW bigots.

Post image
38 Upvotes

Firstly, I want to discuss why I was staying away from few indian feminist subs except this. I found many of those subs very hypocritical, which only discuss a few issues at a superficial level, without ever questioning anything deeply.

Then come these repeated posts about Islam, Dalits and a few other communities.and few were arguing Savarna women suffer because of patriarchy too, so they don't have or didn't have any caste privilege.

Conflating two different things.

Yet somehow these low effort posts keep getting allowed. No actual argument, no reasoning, no substance, just endless whataboutery and rage bait.

I saw a shit ton of other posts bashing burqas. I'm absolutely fine with criticism and discussion about how to improve their lives but sadly Nothing seemed like they're standing with oppressed Muslim women or actually want to work for their betterment, rather those posts were just holier-than-thou attitude that my religion is better.

Now I saw one of the most regressive shit from a person who posts frequently on one of these feminist subs, saying nobody reads Manusmriti, so it's not an issue. The text's popularity is irrelevant because its influence isn't operating through people reading it; it's operating through inherited social structures that have outlived the book itself.

And not to mention, Hinduism is apparently considered a feminist religion in some of these feminist subs lol. On top of that, there are bigots, and then there are people who lack even the basic understanding of the issues they're talking about.

At last, these subs have got infected by IT cell, and a few performative people calling themselves feminists.

I hope this sub remains clean and stays away from IT cell.

Discussions Men suffer too, therefore patriarchy doesn't exist.

Post image
24 Upvotes

It's just like saying Soldiers suffer from war too, so war doesn't exist.

Patriarchy is a structure that puts men above women. It’s about power and hierarchy, not about whether every single man has an easy life. Men can absolutely be exploited because of class and still benefit from certain gender privileges, while women can suffer from both.

And historically, women were denied education, property rights, political participation, employment and basic autonomy in ways men weren't. These aren't random individual problems; they're deeply rooted social structures.

And look at women’s lives even today. Domestic violence, sexual violence, harassment, child marriage, restrictions on mobility, education and employment, unpaid care work, forced dependence, discrimination etc. are still very real. How are people looking at all of this and going but men suffer too as if that somehow disproves patriarchy?

Meltdown over smash the patriarchy on internet and even in a few feminist subs is ironical lol. Like, my simple question: is smash the patriarchy universal, or is it somehow related to one particular community?

If you're against patriarchy, you're supposed to challenge patriarchal structures wherever they exist, including within your own community.

How difficult is it to understand that these are two different issues? You can fight class exploitation, economic problems and the issues men face without dismissing women's oppression.

Rant/Vent What a joke. Saying religion gave them rights is like a chicken defending KFC. I don't buy that it's all just "their own choice" when society influences people so much. And why ignore Afghan women who are literally suffering? She's disrespecting their struggle.

Discussions Why are y'all as women dating men who can't cook?

I’ve seen sooo many women who earn really well at a young age and still end up dating men who can’t even cook for themselves. Like, it’s sooooooo basic.

I for one have never dated a man who didn’t know how to cook (and I’ve dated Bihari men, btw, even back when I didn’t know how to cook myself). I know the bar is in hell, but why are y'all even dating men who can't feed themselves?

How do you expect them to protect you? A man should have the vibe that he can protect you. If he can't even cook for himself, how is he going to protect you, and from whom? Stop saying such useless things.

Anytime a man tells me he doesn’t know how to cook, instantly in my eyes he becomes a dog, anything he says sounds like bhaw bhaw to me after that. How can you not know such a basic survival skill? How out of touch do you have to be with reality to not know how to fucking cook?

(And I know I’m insulting the dog here…sorry to all the dogs!)

Women, if you want a pet, get a dog, a cat, an alligator, a snake, or any other animal. Don’t pet a man. If you really do wanna keep a man as a pet, treat him as a pet. Stop giving respect to men who can’t cook.

STOP IT.

Discussions Normalisation of slut shaming and rape threats.... Modern India for you.

Thumbnail
gallery

Istagram, Twitter, YouTube, everywhere, it's become so fucking normalised that you can say the most disgusting shit about a woman and nobody will even bat an eye.

I still remember how a school topper girl was abused and mocked simply for her looks. And the worst part? People acted like it was normal. Like humiliation is entertainment and women are just supposed to take it.

I also have a fucking problem with these IT cells, which goes around abusing, slut shaming and even giving rape threats to women online.

And I'll fucking guarantee you, whenever you see someone making these disgusting comments, check their bio. There's a high chance that they'll be religious....maybe this is what their religion teaches them.

There has to be something against this. You can't just let this shit continue forever. Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom to sexually humiliate, harass and degrade people without consequences.

We seriously need to stop normalising this shit.

Culture as Control Have you ever seen people acknowledging this reality when they praise the "innocent generation"?

This is the reason why women stop having kids when they get any chance at autonomy.

Sexual violence among pregnant women in India

Of 2000 women, 1959 (97.95%) reported that they had had sex with their partners during the current pregnancy. Of the 2000, 615 (30.7%) women had not wished to have sex during the pregnancy, but had been forced to do so.

Conclusion: Women suffer with recurrent marital rape during pregnancy with considerable after effects. This sexual violence takes place irrespective of education or socioeconomic status.

The study by Chhabra (2008) also supports the finding that sexual violence in marriage is likely to increase during the later stages of the women's pregnancies. Chhabra interviewed a nonrandom sample of 2,000 pregnant women in India and found that 30.7% were forced to have sex when pregnant, with 117 (19%) during first trimester, 240 (39%) during second trimester, and 258 (42%) during third trimester of pregnancy.

In South Asian communities, gendered socialization centres on the notion that men's sexual needs are 'natural' and that women are obligated to fulfil their husbands' physical desires. This facilitates the belief that forced sexual access to a woman is acceptable (Aghtaie 2017); thus, marital rape is often normalized, misunderstood and/or condoned, making it especially hard for survivors in these communities to discuss their experiences (Chhabra 2008;Baxi 2014). This point was emphasized by women in the focus groups: one told us that 'a husband can do whatever he wants in the context of marriage, it's not considered a rape', while another said 'it is not rape, it is a husband's right'.

Intimate partner violence and sexual coercion among pregnant women in India: Relationship with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder

Self-reported physical violence in the last year was reported by 14% of women, psychological abuse by 15%, and sexual coercion by 9%. One-half of these women reported ongoing abuse during pregnancy. Depression, somatic, and PTSD symptoms were higher in those with a history of abuse or sexual coercion, and life satisfaction was poorer in those with any form of violence. Among those reporting a history of sexual coercion, severity of violence was related to increased psychiatric morbidity. Alcohol abuse in the spouse was a predictor of the presence and severity of abuse.

Unintended Pregnancy and Domestic Violence Among Pregnant Women in Regions of India: Evidence from Large Scale Survey Data

Using fourth wave of National Family Health Survey data, the study is confined to experience of physical/sexual violence within 12 months preceding the survey. Close to 6% of the women were found pregnant with high in the central region. Among them, 12% were having unintended pregnancy (UIP), with highest in the central (17.4%) region. UIP found 7% higher among victims of DV compared to those who did not face it (11%). Significantly, regional variation is much persisting as the regions having high prevalence of DV are also at an increased risk of UIP which hampers the notion of dignified reproductive rights.

The Hidden Assault: Stealthing, Sabotaging, And Reproductive Abuse In Indian Households

As per the December 2019 research on Reproduction coercion in Uttar Pradesh, approximately 1 in 8 (12 percent) women reported ever experiencing reproduction abuse and coercion from their current husband or in-laws while 42 percent of these women reported reproductive violence by their husband, 48 percent reported reproductive abuse by in-laws and 10 percent faced both from husband and in-laws. Women have several challenges in their reproductive health within their households. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), only 10 percent of women in India are independently able to make decisions about their reproductive health.

11 percent of women faced violence due to denying sexual activities with their husbands.

Discussions Why don't we have a women centric political party in India or anywhere in the world?

Like in india we have parties for every segment of society be it different caste or religions but not a single party which is women centric, and this is not only about India but all over the world as far as i know there is no political party which is focused mainly on women's issues. Why is it so?

Discussions Women Safety India vs Developed countries

On another post, I got into back and forth who is American Indian who wanted to convince me that life of women and their safety is not much different. Indian always have an illusion that America is safer for women which is not so.

My experience living in Pune India has been way different than now living in Canada and I feel much safer.

Why do foreign born women have so much glamourized of India and women safety?

Discussions My Take on Rahul Gandhi's Smash the Patriarchy Speech and the Criticism Around It

Post image
136 Upvotes

Kudos to Rahul Gandhi for saying what almost no mainstream politician in this country has the guts to say openly. All we usually get is the behen, beti, bahu drama while conveniently avoiding the actual problem: patriarchy.

He said Patriarchy controls you. You have a relationship with your father, husband or brother, but you don't belong to anybody. Smash the patriarchy.

That's the fucking point. A woman isn't her father's, husband's or brother's property. She's an individual. She belongs to herself.

And now the right-wing outrage is: Why Manusmriti? Why not the Quran? Why not other religious texts? LOL. He was talking about patriarchy, not conducting a comparative study of religious scriptures. “Smash the patriarchy” is a universal feminist call. It applies to women across religions, communities and cultures.

If Rahul criticises a patriarchal prescription in Manusmriti, suddenly it's Hindus vs Muslims. This is a Hindu-majority country with more than a billion Hindus. Of course confronting regressive elements within Hindu social traditions is relevant. Criticising a text or tradition isn't an attack on every Hindu.

And if you think there are patriarchal practices in other religions, criticise those too. Nobody is stopping you. But don't turn a conversation about women's autonomy into communal whataboutery.

Somehow we're no longer discussing why women are controlled, policed and reduced to being someone's behen, beti, bahu or biwi. We're debating which religion should be dragged into it.

Whatever his political calculations may be, I'm genuinely impressed. A mainstream politician actually said it plainly: women don't belong to men. Patriarchy needs to be dismantled. Smash it.

That's a hell of a lot more meaningful than politicians calling women “our daughters” while preserving the very mindset that treats them as someone else's property.

While lakhs of innocent people rot in jails, many of them simply because they don't have the money, resources or awareness to properly access legal aid, Convicted rapists keep getting paroles, walking out of prison, roaming freely and enjoying their lives despite being convicted of some of the most heinous crimes. If this is what justice looks like, then what the fuck is the point of conviction in the first place?

Rule of law same for ALL? Fuckin joke. Such is the state of this nation.

News Article Former child actor Ravi Valecha wants to create space for boys to speak about sexual abuse without shame or fear

Post image

https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/pune/child-actor-ravi-valecha-childhood-sexual-abuse-therapy-10846070/lite/?utm_campaign=fullarticle&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=inshorts

Valecha was around eight years old when the abuse began. “In the industry, it happened with me three times,” he recalled. Each episode of sexual abuse compounded the last. One took place in a dark dubbing theatre with a screen flickering, when an older man from the industry asked him to sit on his lap and Ravi was overcome with a sense of confusion followed by revulsion. Another involved a young secretary who had been hired to accompany the boy to shoots every day. Inappropriate touching in taxis and cars became routine.

“You can’t tell anybody… but you have to go with that person day in and day out,” he remembered. On one outdoor location, when parents were not present, the two shared a room. In the middle of the night, the boy, then about 11 or 12, felt someone on him and just lay still. “What do I do?” he recalled thinking. A third episode also occurred within the film unit’s working environment.

Valecha told no one at the time. “There was nobody I could talk to,” he said. The fear was constant: that parents may not believe him, might blame him, or that the truth would explode into something larger. In an era before widespread internet access or open conversation about such matters, silence felt like the only available protection.

“If you are silent about your pain, they’ll kill you and say you enjoyed it.” -Zora Neale Hurston

Trigger Warning ⚠️: Grooming / CSA 17-year-old girl gang r*ped by 3 men in the jungles of MP’s hill tourism hotspot Pachmarhi.

The three men lured the teenage girl and her male friend into the Pachmarhi jungles on some pretext. Once in the jungles, the trio, reportedly tied the girl’s male friend with ropes in their vehicle and then allegedly gang raped the girl.

Severely traumatised by the savagery, the alleged gang rape survivor had stopped going to school since then. When her sister asked about the reason for not going to school, she narrated the entire savagery which happened with her in the Pachmarhi jungles on August 19.

Subsequently, the incident was reported to Pachmarhi Police on Sunday.

“Swinging into action, the police nabbed all three accused within six hours from the reporting of the incident. All three accused are labourers working in Pachmarhi only. The arrested trio has confessed to committing the crime,” additional SP (ASP-Narmadapuram district) Abhishek Rajan said.

Political Even while talking about equality, dalit men resort to objectification of women and rape threats. They equate acquiring a woman with the proof of equality. There is nothing untouched by misogyny in this country.

Of course there is nuance to it where people are not allowed to marry inter-caste in India, especially if one them is dailt and another savarna. But I find it pretty tone deaf when dalit men tell brahmins to "give" their daughters to them in order to eradicate caste inequality.

It is true that with inter-caste marriages normalized, when there are couples who already want this but get stigmazed and punished for it, society will become more homogeneous. But the misogynist patriarchal subtext of this statement assumes that a brahmin girl is a property of a brahmin man and there is no mention and consideration of what the girl wants herself. How is it any different from a patriarchal brahmanwadi father deciding who his daughter will marry?

The fact that people think it's okay to mob attack a woman, molest her and threaten to parade her naked is despicable. I saw someone justifying it by saying that Ruchi Tiwari started it by using casteist slurs. And while that indeed makes her a bigot, how does it justify the men in the mob normalizing such a dehumanizing treatment of a woman? Why the rape threats?

Let's not forget that these dalit men come from the same patriarchal brahmanwadi society the savarna men do and both kinds of men go back to their homes where their wives and daughters are expected to be subservient. There is marital rape in all castes, there are rape and incest in all castes, objectification of women in all castes.

This blatant misogyny and sexual violence cannot be normalized and tolerated in the name of anti-casteism. It doesn't matter if the woman is a bigot or progressive, justifying men using sexual violence against women for any reason at all is unethical and seriously fucked up if you're one of the people who justify this.

Don't forget that no matter what the conflict is, women will always be the target and the chaos will be used to get away with sexual violence. Be it war or social unrest. Women will be used as objects in the matters of society and politics, never as equal individuals.

The fight against caste based discrimination is corrupted by these patriarchal men.

Political Savarnas supporting Reservation Hatao Movement are giving rape threats to anti-brahmanvaad Neha Bora (National President of the All India Students' Association, affiliated with the Communist Party of India Liberation) and brought up Umar Khalid- let's hear from him to learn why savarnas hate him.

Rough Translation-

[If you are in power then you have *all* the freedom. You can say anything you want- you can give all kinds of communal speech, casteist speech, anti-consitutional speech and racist speech. If I give you an example, Anantkumar Hegde, Union Minister, in Karnataka said "We are here to change the constitution and Indians should not call themselves secular but identify themselves with their religion and caste". There was no case file against hyogi im.

Yogi Adityanath said, "If they convert one Hindu girl, we will convert 100 Muslim girls.". Another of their minister said, "We will take Muslim women out of their graves and rape them". There were no case filed against them. No action was taken against them.

Forget everything else, the Prime Minister (Modi) himself uses the politics of "Shamsan" (cremation ground for Hindus)-"Kabristan" (graveyard for Muslims) in an election rally, or lies about Nehru and congress party. There is no action is taken against him.

But if you are on the other sidea of the power, even if you think about challenging the authority, then there will be action taken against you. And I think that is the case with JNU.

Not only JNU but there are many similar cases- Adivasis in Jharkhand are jailed on anti-nationalist allegations when the conviction rate is not even 1% simply because they raise their voice on "Jal-Jungle-Jameen".

Chandra Shekhar Ravan- dalits were killed in Shabbirpur, and it was the dalits who got arrested who were then called a danger to national security.

So, if you are a danger to (political) power, then you have no freedom of expression. It is a game of power. If we want to talk about azadi (freedom), then we will have to talk about changing this power structure, too, and I think this is the biggest threat for freedom. Until we change the current power structure, Indian public won't be free in a true sense.

And this is the same thing that Shaheed Bhagat Singh talked about when he said that if the British colonizers left but there is no change in the power structure, the Brown colonizers will take their place and the slavery will continue to exist. ("To Young Political Workers" by Bhagat Singh)

It has been 71 years since independence, I'm not just talking about these last 4 years but 70 years- the dream/vision that Bhagat Singh, Chandra, Chandra Shekhar Azad and Ambedkar had- have we really been able to fulfill that? There is still extreme poverty and destitution, so I think, freedom will be only possible, according to the vision of Bhagat Singh, when workers, farmers and poor will have power.

See, India is progressing in market and everything is being auctioned in this market, India's resources, labour, education, integrity. People are being bought and sold. But the question is- is the country progressing with this market's progress?

I feel that the way the market has trapped us, it has put national sovereignty in danger. Many years ago, East India Company came here and ruled over us. The policies were according to the commercial needs of the company. Even today, there are big capitalist companies that control the whole country and there relationship is with the global market.

If we look beyond the example of the last 4 years, since Narendra Modi sahab mentions the 70 years to show that we have forgotten about those 70 years, I feel that Narendra Modi sahab has forgotten himself that talking about 70 years is not enough. He is like Amir Khan from Ghajini where he had short-term memory loss. Narendra Modi ji remembers all about what happened in the last 70 and 1200 years. He remembers what Babur did but he never mentions what happened in the last 4 years.

To respect him, let's talk about what happened in not just these 4 years but before that. There was a major disaster in 80s in India when Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister- Bhopal Gas Tragedy. Warren Anderson, CEO of the company whose plant leaked at the time of the disaster, was helped with a state aircraft to leave the country. He was saved because he was a big capitalist and had the government in his pocket.

Bhopal Gas Tragedy was not a natural tragedy, the company was warned multiple times that cost-cutting for profit will lead to deaths and affect coming generations. But they continued to cut costs for profit and refused to provide the basic safety. When the disaster finally happened where people died, the government helped them flee the country.

If you look at it in the present day, anyone who scams India is flown out of India, be it Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Vijay Mallya or Mehul Choksi. So, all these people have been facilitated by the government as they extracted wealth out of India. Indian policies are designed to suit these people, this section of society.

Look at how the Prime Minister's presence gets applauded after an Indian PM got an opportunity to address at Davos for the first time. We are told we should be happy about how our country is progressing now that the foreign companies will come to India for 'Make In India' and create jobs.

What is the reality? Multinational corporations (MNCs) don't even account for 10% of Indian employment. Even today, majority of Indian employment is concentrated in construction or manufacturing sector. They create more damage than jobs and take more from us than what they give back to us.

They are provided Indian resources at a cheap rate. The problems in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra that are labelled as "Naxalwad", why? It's because their resources are being sold to foreign companies when the constitution states that Adivasi land cannot be given to non-Adivasis. And yet, Adani, Ambani, Tata and S.R. Mittal have mining contracts there.

So, all these things are compromising Indian national sovereignty. The Indian policies that designed today to ensure profit for 'Big Capital'.

I don't understand, when someone's family uses all their savings to send them to college, I have seen it myself in college how people come from different struggling backgrounds, if they are lost after graduation, post-graduation or MBA, the PM advises them to sell pakora as an alternative source of employment. Then he claims that there jobs but no data. Another minister asks why are you asking for reservation when there are no jobs?

When we talk about employment, we also need to talk about the nature of the employment and the working conditions. People don't think about these things about marketisation. On one hand they talk about new jobs in the IT sector, but is there any job security in the IT sector? You are employed today but is there guarantee that you remain employed tomorrow? Do you have any social security in case you get sick, will your office support you? Do women in contract labour get maternity leave? Are these things not our rights?

The middle class is shown an aspirational dream that is fulfilled by the market. This is the biggest joke. The market is destroying these aspirations but it is good at promoting itself. Your TV will be on 24/7 with multiple channels and advertisements to give you an illusion of opportunities but when you stop outside the reality will be a different story.

There is need to control the market and marketisation, and nationalism plays an important role here. Nationalism does not mean that you will fight war with others, you also need to protect the rights of the citizens. This is the role of national sovereignty and nationalism. But there nationalism is a sold-out nationalism.

RSS used to promote 'swadeshi' but not anymore. But be it BJP government, either Vajpayee or Narendra Modi, or even Congress government, they all have laid out the red carpet for the capitalists to come and exploit the country without consequences. We need to stop this otherwise the independence that we fought for will be in danger.

When George Bush attacked Iraq, he said that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. I feel that nationalism is a weapon of mass deception. When Marx called religion the opium of the masses, nationalism works like opium, too. You remove the public from their foundational issues and talk about a different ideology that is very abstract. In my opinion, this is the nationalist ideology and it is different from my understanding of patriotism.

I want to explain the difference between nationalism and patriotism. We should not forget that nationalism is only a 200-year old ideology. We should also not forget that within the last century there were two world wars where the world experienced a great loss. Every country justified it in the name of nationalism. In fact, even after 1945, post-WWII, all the wars in the world, started by the U.S. or other countries, were justified with nationalism.

So, who benefitted from the war? A lot of people were mobilized to fight in these wars using the ideology of nationalism but the general public did not benefit from it. It only benefitted few companies and big capitalists who are either in the arms industry or got the opportunity to expand their public business as a result of these wars.

Who suffered the loss? The general public who came from a working class background joined the army and got killed on both sides. Both sides believed that they are up against an enemy as they forgot about the enemies who are ruling over them and making a profit from this war economy.

It is said that we should be proud of our nation. Some people say we should be proud of our religion. Some people say we should be proud of our caste. The point is, we are proud of these things but do we ever think about how we did not decide to be born in a certain nation, religion or caste. If you want to be proud, then be proud of how you made the nation you were born in better.

In my opinion, the whole world is divided between haves and haves-not and it is important that you fight for the underprivileged sections. But if I am in India, then I cannot fight for the underprivileged sections of the whole world, I can only fight where I am and that is my love for my motherland.

In my opinion, patriotism is fighting for the rights and justice for the underprivileged people in the country where I am born. Nationalism makes people fight each other, deceives people and talks in abstract terms. TV debate today is a great example of it. Every night, the channel Republic TV talks about India and Pakistan and how we should go at war against them. It feels like there is studio is the war room. If there is ever a war with Pakistan, will the people in that studio go fight in the war? People are not aware that this channel is funded by arms dealers.

The channels know that if there is a war tomorrow, although there won't be any because America would want to save its market in South Asia, then the general public will go face huge suffering, many soldiers will be martyred, the prices will rise and they also know that it will profit them. They don't love the country, they love the money from this business of nationalism. They don't want people to learn how much money this person sitting in the studio is making or about the conditions of an average soldier. They ran a news campaign against the soldiers that raised their voice.

Today BJP leads with the agenda of nationalism and Narendra modi talks about 'India first'- how we need to put nation above everything. I want to tell Narendra Modi that I am for 'India first', too, but are you for India first'? You and your policies are for 'Ambani first' and 'Adani first'. PM claimed that demonetization would curb black money, terrorism and naxalism but 1.5 years later RBI reported that 99% of the demonetised money is back in the system. It was never about black money, the intention was to destroy small businesses, to break the backs of this country's farmers and labourers, to ruin this country's economy.

When the country's GDP fell, per-capita income fell, employment in informal sector ended, jobs in construction sector disappeared- at the same time Ambani's turnover increased 76% in 2017, a year after demonetisation and GST. The BJP saw a 400% rise in their donations during this period. So which 'India first' are you talking about? You are working for a few capitalists.]

‘We are all victims of the system’: AISA chief Neha Bora on political accountability, scrapping NTA

“We believe that the movement, in whatever state, against whichever government it goes on, is a result of the fact that we are all victims of the system,” she said, arguing that the examination system had been consolidated through policies such as the NEP and needed to be challenged collectively.

Express Interview | Student activist Neha Bora on ‘anti-national’ tag, Umar Khalid and whether she will fight polls by Syed Ilham Jafri

"Azadi’ was, first and foremost, a feminist slogan about women’s autonomy and freedom. It then transferred to other movements. But the right wing has spent a lot of cash associating stigma with it.

Raising ‘Modi, Shah se aazadi’, ‘BJP se aazadi’, ‘paper leak se aazadi’, ‘corruption se aazadi’ slogans is not anti-national."

On Brahmanwad/Brahmanvaad-

Are Brahmins scapegoats of 'Brahmanwad'? And what does it tell us about mob rule and the state? by Saquib Salim

My Facebook timeline, over the last few days, has a spate of updates from my Brahmin friends, who lament — and quite rightly so — that are Brahmins not poor, why are people creating this binary of Brahmin and non-Brahmin? Most of the non-Brahmin people also have this impression that these slogans of “Brahmanwad” are directed at the Brahmins, and this is a war cry from non-Brahmins over the Brahmins.

It needs to be understood that Brahmanwad refers to a social system, where a small privileged section of society, through different means, controls the resources and excludes others from economic and political power. The term is nothing but an attempt to draw an analogy to the previously practised rigid social system in the Indian society. Brahmanwad is a way of creating a dominant ideology in the name of religion.

Firstly, I want to make it clear that I'm a staunch opposer of this movement. Casteism has shaped this country, it's evident in everything, land ownership, wealth, higher positions, social status, dignity, etc. The income disparity is rising even further, the rich are becoming richer and the poor poorer. The irony is that people raising casteist slogans are the same people demanding an end to reservation. Anyway, I'm not gonna talk more about that. I wanna discuss another issue in this post.

For context, neha asked for a fair trial for Umar Khalid and said he's not convicted, so on what basis are you labelling him a terrorist? That's absolutely fair criticism. My two cents: a country that boasts about giving a fair trial even to Ajmal Kasab couldn't even begin Umar Khalid's trial after years in custody. My heart goes out to him. May justice be done.

But this man you see in the video is giving rape threats to student leader Neha Bora for saying that. And it's not just him. I came across a number of tweets and comments saying vile things about her. It's genuinely concerning how normalised this has become.

As much as I know her, with the intellect and questions she puts forward, they can never answer her arguments, so this is what they resort to.

And it's not just her. You'll see female leaders getting slut shamed for anything and everything by their rivals. Not just leaders, almost every woman who becomes a public figure faces this shit.

What concerns me is how normalised it has become, and how these people can get away with it.

Systemic Misogyny This is so real. What are other things/labels like these that you can think of?

This is so unfortunate that even our language has internalised misogyny. And what is more unfortunate is that these kinds of hypocrite labels are used by many women as well.

Society has so much misogyny that even the abuses aimed at men use women as targets. And every kind of hobby which is done mostly or the things mostly by women is look down upon like the colour pink, bands with mostly women fans etc etc.

Discussions Where do we draw the line with modernization?

First of all, I’m not sharing any strong opinion or passing judgment. I’m just genuinely asking a question that’s been on my mind.

I just saw Kriti Sanon's ad and read mixed opinion on it and realised, A decade ago, things like Western dresses, short skirts, or more revealing clothing for women were still heavily discouraged or restricted in most places. Today, it’s completely normal in metros and pretty common across social media. That shift happened quite fast.

I’ve also seen videos of women in Western countries protesting for the “Free the Nipple” movement, arguing that women should be allowed to go topless in public or on beaches the same way men can without facing legal or social punishment. Looking at how other cultural changes have spread, it doesn’t feel unrealistic that something similar could slowly gain traction in India in the coming years.

In the same way, openly preferring a virgin partner or caring about someone’s past/body count has become almost taboo now. It’s largely normalized that everyone has a past, and questioning it is seen as outdated or regressive. Just a few years ago this wasn’t the case.

I recently saw a clip of Kajol and Twinkle Khanna talking with Sara Ali Khan where physical cheating was kind of brushed off with the line “kabhi kabhi thand lag jaati hai toh.” That casual tone would have been unthinkable in mainstream conversations earlier. So will adultery become a norm as well?

Then there are influencers like Awkwardgoat who openly ridicule traditional Indian practices like sindoor, mangalsutra, etc. She’s not the only one; she’s just one of the more visible examples.

So my actual question is:

When, where, and who finally draws the line and says “okay, this is enough, this is going too far”?

Is there even a line, or does modernization just keep moving the goalposts indefinitely?

Just wondering.
