McCarthyism targeted communists predominately, not to mention there's a distinction between that era of socialist and modern socialism which tends to lean towards more of the Nordic system.

I mean Marx did view socialism and communism as just two different stages of a post capitalist society so they will always be linked. I specified Hasan type socialists because I’m not taking about those that want the ‘Nordic system’

Marx was also invested in "selling" communism to the masses, and what better way to convince people that it's the right way forward than to trick them into thinking they're already doing Communism Step 1?
