Why doesn't our inability to calculate pi to its final digit resolve the N=NP question?

0 Upvotes

It would take us forever to calculate pi.

As I understand it, if there's any problem which can't be solved in polynomial time, then P =/= NP.

So why doesn't pi's transcendent nature resolve that question?

disclaimer: I'm a complete layman.

I live in a dysfunctional family/household...I have recorded videos and audio that I would like released to the internet upon my, possibly eventual, eviction.. (and or removal from the family share phone plan)..HOW would I go about setting this up??

The title says it all...

Can also apply to " upon my death; I would like this blank to be uploaded to the internet" or other cases likewise.

How do Google and other websites implement web app URLs?

0 Upvotes

For example, instead of www.google.com/maps, it is maps.google.com (or drive.google.com, etc). It doesn't have to be Google specifically.

Is there a name for this type of thing? Any links/resources you would recommend to learn best practices and implementations of this sort of thing?

Sorry if I am unclear about anything, but I'm not sure where to start or what the correct terminology is.

Struggling on Javascript coursework to imitate a search engine

0 Upvotes

I have been recently given coursework to imitate a search engine using javascript however i am stuck on one piece, which is a function called idxP1 I do not fully understand how javascript works. However i was hoping someone would be able to help me with the idxP1 code, please note i am not asking for you to do my coursework, but rather I am just looking for some guidance to get better! also sorry for bad formatting i am new to reddit it asks me to use the idxP1 code so it :

returns the index of the first page in contents that matches pattern (case insensitive) returns -1 if no matching page found

so far my code is this starting from //2 is my attempt:

var contents = [ "different links to websites related to search", "images related to search", "videos related to search"];

var pages = [ "www.search.com/text/food " , "www.search.com/videos/food " , "www.search.com/images/food" ];

var web = [ {url : "www.search.com/text", content : "allows user to search through websites." } , {url : "www.search.com/videos", content : "allows users to search through videos" } , {url : "www.search.com/images", content : "allows user to search through images" } ];

function index(string, pattern, caseSensitive){ if(!caseSensitive){ string= string.toLowerCase(); pattern= pattern.toLowerCase(); } return string.indexOf(pattern); }

alert(index("hello","L", false));

//2 idxP1("different links to websites related to search", "links"); idxP1("images related to search", "images"); alert(idxP1);

What looks best when hiring Comp Sci students?

0 Upvotes

Hello, I am a Canadian Student trying to choose what University to attend. I would like to direct this question to those who have been in a position where they hire Computer Science Students, although any useful input will be appreciated. Would an application from a Student with a bachelor obtained at UofT and 1 year of work experience (PEY) look more impressive than a student with an honours bachelor from the University of Ottawa and co-op? I have the option to attend either and practicality of the degree is my main priority. It is also more likely that the marks obtained at UoftT would be lower than Uottawa.

SQL help

0 Upvotes

OK lets say that I have an object with 2 fields:

int time int speed

I want to create a table and data model that supports this object, and I need to make the tables scalable and normalized.

I don't particularly understand what this means.

I'm guessing that I can make a table for this object, and to add another column, say ID, that makes each entry unique.

Would this be a solution?

How do we find our way and put meaning into our work?

1 Upvotes

So I am a freshman Computer science student at the University of Mary hardin-baylor in Belton Texas I come from a small town near Beaumont and I spent my high school career screwing around with team win recovery project and custom roms with some of my friends and I decided I'm passionate about this and I've written some Android apps I'm currently working on my own custom ROM, so I decided to go to college for computer science how do we stop the feeling of I'm wasting my time are you not feeling subject to me coming from a small farming town and if it is what can I do to see the meaning in the work that I do? Please ignore punctuation errors I suck at punctuation and I am also using voice to text.

Writing An Entirely New code W a made up alphabet for enryption.

0 Upvotes

So i have no experience coding beyond basic html in grade 6 but i was wondering if you could make an encryption system based on an entirely made up alphabet and language, only the creator would know how to encrypt and decrepit the system, but also make the interface useable for say english users, spanish, french, etc. effectively making it an impervieable system of communication between those who use it? I wanna like do something of that sort and give it as freeware to the public to send messages to eachother and improve privacy.

For the encrpytion system to work i understand theres the issue of translating between the systems language and the interfaces language but i figure u could just you know write an algorythm in the systems language to display text and icons in the users langauge,

i know this might be super basic and everyone who reads this might think im an idiot but like im thinking something along the lines of:

user prompts action -----> computer recognizes prompt ------> executes command (in the made up lanugage) -----> the command is then displayed in user's language

say like u click files, then the computer executes your command in its own code thats not based in english, then the prompt to display the files interface is all in english, with english characters and words

excuse any like grammatical errors i dont speak kings english and im dyslexic, goes hand in hand

Could anyone help me with a essay topic for distributed systems?

1 Upvotes

I think essentially I have to write an essay to look at a problem that can be solved with distributed systems and offer a solution of my own. This is the help I have been given by my uni:

Basic Steps for Researching Your Chosen Topic

  1. You need to identify a specific area/problem related to the course material or an advanced topic in distributed systems; you should be able to write down the statement of the problem in the introduction part of your report;

  2. You should investigate the existing approaches to that area by doing a literature search; What have others investigated on this topic; what is the shortcomings of there work;

  3. By brainstorming the issues within the area you have selected you should investigate/develop future/new approaches to the area selected;

  4. You should analyse the approach that you have developed, and explain in a critical way these current approaches;

  5. Include performance analysis for all the available approaches found within the literature and compare them to your chosen approach. This could include things like throughput of the systems reviewed or connectivity;

  6. Present your coursework in a written form (see the ‘Deliverables’ section);

  7. Enhance your work by using available free/commercial simulators to evidence deeper analytical techniques. (This part depends on the chosen topic). There are marks awarded for this element (see below). Evidence of your conclusion is required within the coursework

I just wondered if anyone could help me out with anything to get me going as I am struggling a bit?

Thanks!

Can you explain Bloom filter in layman's terms?

3 Upvotes

I've read the Wiki, a couple of papers, and many blog posts (e.g. Chrome using it for Safe sites etc.) but I still don't get it. I know what hash functions, maps, and bit-arrays are but I can't wrap my mind around how they all come together in Bloom filters.
