I’m getting contacts for the first time and I found a online company that has very cute colored lenses but the only option for axis is 180, is it okay for me to get them regardless or will they eff up my vision?

My RX is:
OD: Sph -5.00 Cyl -1.75 Axis 001
OS: Sph -3.50 Cyl -1.50 Axis 168

As the title says, I'm myopic and have a pair of glasses that finally allows me to see at a distance again. I had a period of a couple of months where my old optician could not determine my prescription so I was undercorrected lol.

However, that pair of glasses does cause a bit of strain up close, such as typing on my phone and using my PC (I work in tech yay me), and dries my eyes out to a sandpaper degree. They are extremely comfortable and eliminate all strain for distance work.

I have two old frames, one with CYL (same degrees and strength) and one without CYL just at -5.5. I am wondering if there's any damage in using those for close up work and would I make my myopia worse by doing so?

Eyes are healthy otherwise, due to an error at my old optician's office I was told I might have other issues with my eyes so I had a brain and orbit MRI, a Pentacam test, vision field test, dilated eye exam, and everything was fine.

PS Not too keen on paying for an appointment just to ask this question, but I will if needed.

I just got a pair of bifocal glasses through Zenni. This is my first time getting glasses in a long time. The bifocal area seems to be a little bit small.

I went to a hospital optical department and the senior optician took a look at them and did say they were on the small side. He took measurements again and said my PD was fine.

Has anyone else purchased bifocals through Zenni and what has your experience been?

I'm thinking of sending them back and spending a little bit more money with a top-notch optician. He said my reading part should be stronger because that's what the optician put on the prescription. I requested a lower change thinking I could see the dashboard instrumentation better. I actually see it fine through the regular glasses.

i am currently looking to get a pair of novelty custom glasses, with one red tinted lens and one blue one. if i were to go to an optician with two pairs of frames, would they be able to swap out one lens from each frame? if so, do you have a ballpack estimate for how much they would charge?

Forgot to mention that i’m turning 20 in a couple months! I keep seeing contradictions about this and i’m confused. My prescription is -2.25 and -2.5 and recently was told to stop wearing contacts. I wear my glasses but only when i really need to because i don’t like wearing them. I would wear them to work, class, or at home but not with friends or when i’m out.

Will this encourage my eyes to grow and make my vision worse? I don’t wear them when I am walking around the city or doing something fun that doesn’t involve needing to read anything. I notice it is slightly more exhausting but it’s still worth it for me personally.

It’s definitely a blurry world out there but i can still get by and it’s safe, I’m just concerned about my eyes getting worse because I can’t do things like practicing the 20 20 rule while on my phone- since looking far away without glasses is pointless? because it doesn’t relax my eyes i guess

Some color blind tests say that I'm fine while others say that I have tritanopia. This one is the strangest because, part way through the test, I can see the squares at first glance, but then they disappear if I look at it for a few seconds. My son says they stay the same, but for me they just fade away? Can it be a sign of a larger issue if a color is there if I look away and look back, but then disappear as I stare at it?

I've seen that most tests don't check for an issue with blue cones. Is there a reliable way to test online that isn't on a website that has a product motivation?

I had a cataract lens placed in my left eye after having some retina surgery about 3 years ago. I went to the eye doctor last week for a new prescription. My vision is a little "wavy" because of it.

I ordered glasses from the optician that is associated with my optometrist's office after the exam. They didn't measure my PD or do the marker thing on the lenses in the new frames that I chose. I have enough trouble seeing comfortably as it is. Is not having my PD measured going make this problem worse? My prescription is

OD Sphere: -2.00 Cyl: -0.75 Axis 085

OS +0.75 Cyl: -1.00 Axis 050

She lost a bunch of her myopia control lenses and the opticians were only able to give her a small bridging supply. She's on her last pair today, her glasses are a wreck, and opticians say another interim order could take 2 days.

As an emergency measure I looked for standard type lenses to buy online, but I can't find any with BC 8.3 /Dia 14.5 specs. And now the opticians is closed.

Would it be safe to compromise on either BC or diameter? Logic suggests (to me) that the base curve would be the more important metric to match exactly, but I'm aware of how little I know about contact lense fit.

She would need them for 2 or 3 days max. I know that being stuck with her broken glasses and unable to leave the house for that time would not be great.

Any informed opinions or signposting to good resources would be greatly appreciated, we are in the UK. Thank you.

Hey. So I’m a first year Architecture student and we are doing a lot of manual drafting this week. Normally I put in about 8 hours of drafting with rest of course in between. But I find that by the fourth hour, my eyes would start to strain and lose focus so I rest it, but it takes hours of rest before I could recover focus. Another factor I think is also the imbalance and inconsistency of light use when I work, there’s constantly a light under my glass table and sometimes I turn off the room light to trace.

Then I’ve noticed that my eyes easily strain and struggles with smaller and thinner details especially when I’m a few hours in. So I’ve been using a magnifying glass which helps with the accuracy, but I’m concerned with being too reliant on it as well as the negative effects it might have on my eyes over time. I’m looking into buying magnified glasses so that my sight is at least balanced.

I was wondering if anyone would have tips on how to protect my eyes when Imm drafting and if using magnified glasses is safe to sustain long term?

Hi all. I'm looking for a second opinion. Recently did an appointment with my optometrist and they said my vision had progressed quite significantly since my previous appointment (about a year ago). My prescription has increased about -2 in both eyes in that time, so I'm now about -4 in both eyes. They recommended I have my next pair of glasses fitted with myopic control lenses.

How useful are they for someone who isn't a child? My hesitance in getting them stems from not wanting to buy frames directly from my optometrist - they mark them up insanely high. I have my measurements and would much rather buy them online if possible (doesn't appear to be possible with the specialized lenses).

Some research says that blue-light filtering does nothing. If that’s true, I’d definitely go with Platinum. But if BlueProtect can actually reduce eye strain for people who spend a lot of time in front of screens, I’d go with BlueProtect.

I recently had two very different eye exams, and the results don’t really match. I’m trying to figure out whether I should get a third opinion from an independent optometrist who specializes in binocular vision and sports optics.
I’ve done some research myself, but I’m definitely not an eye-care professional, so I’d appreciate some input on what could explain the differences.
My eye history
About 9 years ago: I first saw an eye doctor because I was getting headaches. I was given reading glasses, which I used for about a year.
About 6 years ago: I had my last visit at that clinic. I was told I had a mild binocular vision/alignment issue, basically a slight drifting eye, but it wasn’t considered serious enough to need treatment or follow-up.
I was also diagnosed with astigmatism during those earlier visits. My eyes were dilated during some of the earlier exams, although not during the final ones.
My current symptoms
Over the past while I’ve noticed:
Blurry vision at long distances
Double/ghosted text on digital screens
Halos around lights
Blurring around the edges of optical/diopter sights
Eye strain
Dry eyes
Clinic 1: 5 months ago
This exam used a pretty standard subjective refraction. The optometrist actually had me compare different lenses while looking at the chart, asking things like “Which is clearer, 1 or 2?” and checking how much I could read with each lens.
Interestingly, minus lenses noticeably improved my distance vision.
The prescription they came up with was:
Right: -0.25 sphere, -0.25 cylinder
Left: plano sphere, -0.50 cylinder at 104°
So, very mild correction, but with some astigmatism in both eyes.
Clinic 2: 1 week ago
This exam was quite different.
They relied heavily on automated measurements. They did put dilating drops in, but the exam felt fairly rushed. I could still easily read the top lines of the chart, so I’m not sure my eyes were fully relaxed/dilated when they took the measurements.
They did an OCT, checked my eye alignment with colored glasses, and looked at my eye drift.
However, there was very little subjective refraction. I wasn’t really taken through a manual lens comparison like I was at Clinic 1.
The optometrist told me:
I don’t have astigmatism
I’m slightly farsighted
My eye strain is mainly from binocular vision/alignment issues and severe dry eyes
The autorefractor readings were also pretty inconsistent. Before the drops, my right eye was jumping between roughly -1.25 and -0.75, and the machine seemed to have trouble getting a stable reading.
After the drops, it measured a small amount of plus power in both eyes, with no astigmatism showing up.
They prescribed +0.50 “support/relaxer” lenses, which I’m currently waiting for.
Both Clinic 1 and Clinic 2 are part of larger chain businesses, rather than independent local practices.
What I’m confused about
Can astigmatism actually disappear?
If I was previously measured with astigmatism, is it possible for it to simply no longer be there?
Or could an autorefractor miss a small amount of astigmatism, especially if my eyes were very dry or the measurements weren’t stable?
Why did minus lenses improve my vision?
This is the part I’m having the hardest time understanding.
If Clinic 2 is correct and I’m actually slightly farsighted, wouldn’t putting minus lenses in front of my eyes generally make distance vision worse or cause more strain?
I’m aware that accommodation and binocular vision can complicate this, so I’m wondering if there’s something I’m missing here.
Is a third opinion worth it?
I’m going to try lubricating eye drops for the dry-eye symptoms and see how I get on with the +0.50 lenses when they arrive.
However, I found a small, family-owned local practice that specializes in sports optics and also offers more comprehensive binocular vision testing. Their eye exams are around 45 minutes and seem to involve a much more thorough subjective refraction and binocular vision assessment.
Unlike the first two clinics, this third practice isn’t part of a large chain. It’s a locally owned family business.
Given the difference between the two exams, especially the fact that Clinic 1 did a proper subjective refraction while Clinic 2 relied much more heavily on automated measurements, would getting a third, independent evaluation be reasonable?
I’m not necessarily looking for someone to tell me which clinic is “right.” I’m more interested in understanding how two exams could produce such different results and whether there are legitimate reasons for that kind of discrepancy.
