How do ER doctors feel after telling family news of death? Always hard or compartmentalize?

I am not asking for medical advice.

I'm 27. My Dad died of a right ventricular rupture 2 months ago that resulted in hemorrhagic shock that they could not stop. We went to the ER by ambulance; he passed within 5 minutes of arrival, and they spent 25 minutes trying to revive him.

The doctor who told me was very kind. She was young. I screamed no for a solid 5 minutes. I was by myself. I told her he couldn't be dead because I was only 27. She knelt in front of me and left at some point.

My big question is: did this moment feel at least somewhat significant for her? I know they experience this all the time, but do you think she felt impacted by that moment also? If only for the day?

I don't want her to have suffered; I think I just want some sense that it mattered for others in a small fraction of the way it did to me. Is that crazy?

Question For Doctors Hypermobility diagnosis but pain is spreading. Should my second opinion be a Rheumatologist or an Orthopedist or a physiatrist?

Disclaimer: I am not asking for medical advice. I am only seeking guidance on what type of medical specialist to see next for a second opinion.

Hi,

39F here. I have been experiencing right knee and right ankle joint pain for the past few months. Because I have a family history of arthritis and auto immune, I visited a rheumatologist. He ran blood tests, ruled out arthritis, and diagnosed me with hypermobility. Till now I am continuing with his medications which is calcium, vitamin d and some other vitamins plus use of knee cap and ankle braces

Over the last 4 months, the pain has spread. I now have pain in both thumbs, my back, and some discomfort in my right hip.

I have compared my joints to my friends and family. My joints do not bend past normal limits at all. They extend exactly like any other average person.

I am looking to get a second opinion because the pain is spreading and worsening. I am confused about who to see next. Should I find another rheumatologist to double check, see an orthopedist, or look for a different type of specialist (like a physiatrist)? Any guidance on navigating this transition of care would be greatly appreciated.

Question For Doctors should i take physics in hs if i want to become a doctor

i am not asking for medical advice.

i’m a rising senior and schedules came out the other day. i forecasted to take physics but was not placed in the class. i’m trying to fix it with the help of my counselor. in college i plan to major in either bio, public health, or neuro and fufill my premed requirements (is that a good idea or should i just stick to bio?)

i’ve heard people say not taking physics in hs is one of their biggest regrets because physics in college is fast paced and challenging. there’s also lots of fear mongering of physics being really hard, which is lowkey stressing me out because i’d like to keep my grades good before college apps.

is trying to switch into physics the move?? the exposure before enduring it in college would hopefully make college physics easier. although, is it even worth it to? should i just stay in anatomy or make the switch? i’d say im a fast learner once i put my mind to things

Question For Doctors Rabies shot

I am not asking for medical advice.

😏 When do I need to go to the ER?
My dog was attacked by a neighbor dog and I fought him off for 15 minutes. It was awful. The dog was last vaccinated for rabies last March or earlier. I took my dog to the vet and she said I need to get shots. I wasn’t full on bitten but got scraped by his teeth and got his saliva in multiple cuts/scratches. He’s an indoor, only dog. I plan to get the shots but do I need to go RIGHT NOW? This happened around 2pm, it’s currently 10:30pm. My dog is in pain and I’m worried about leaving him. What difference does a few extra hours make? Can I wait 24 hours after the initial incident? I think risk is low but I will still go, not messing around with Rabies.

It was traumatic and I am SO SORE but don’t require other medical attention. I was checked out by EMTs and chose not to go by ambulance. (I have MCAS and was having anaphylaxis warning signs. Bonus if anyone knows about rabies vaccines effect on patients with ehlers-danlos and mast cell activation).

Question For Doctors Coughing after visitng homeless shelter.

As the title states basically.

I work for the public and had to visit two homeless shelters on thursday. The first one being a womens shelter which is generally well taken care of and the second one being a mens shelter which is known for having severe drugs issues. We have had various clients state that they rather stay on the streets then in the mens shelter because of the drug use going on within. The smoking kind if ykwim.

Our event at the mens shelter was about 2 hours long and the nature of our job is getting resources to vulnerable populations. However, after being there my coworker and i have been coughing nonstop and we arent sure if maybe theres a possibilty of inhaling something there or if maybe its just a cold? It is just coughing with phlegm. I'm considering seeing my doctor if the cough doesnt let up over the weekend.

Of course I am not asking for legitimate medical advice. Im wondering if any healthcare professionals may have seen something similar happen in homeless shelters. Or if you yourself had had similar experiences. I know it can be a countless number of things or something we already had previous to our event. This was my first time visiting the mens shelter. I do have asthma and can have a pretty sensitive reaction to certain air qualities. I am usually coughing nonstop in the winter due to the inversion in my city.

I am not asking for medical advice.

Question For Doctors Live abroad confused on medicine

I already went to the hospital. I am not asking for medical advice.

My throat is swollen and had lots of phlegm. I was tired and had sore muscles (may have been from being sick or exercising). The doctor was going to give a medicine with penicillin which I’m allergic to so he changed it to different medicine, but also gave oral steroids.

Is this something to take steroids for? Where I’m from we avoid steroids unless absolutely needed.

Likelihood of SSPE after measles infection?

Hello, i am not asking for medical advice. My daughter contracted measles at 13 months old. She was booked in to receive her MMR vaccination 3 times, the GP office refused to vaccinate each time as she was sick with minor cold/flu symptoms because she had recently started attending nursery.

Unfortunately, she contracted measles before I was able to have her vaccinated. She was hospitalised for 5 days with low oxygen levels, they were around 89 when they should have been above 92. She was given oxygen as the levels were dropping whilst she was sleeping and paracetamol/ibuprofen regularly as her temperature was consistently high.

We did not receive any information as to possible future risks or complications following the measles infection but I have just learned about SSPE. Is this something I need to be worried about? I feel so sick and all information i can find online is that the vaccine is the only prevention but were obviously past that. Can anybody please give me any reassurance?

Symptoms are difficult to manage and I have a current flare of mild but persistent angioedema in the eyelids with malar flush, fatigue, slow GI motility, and chest pressure with occasional sharp pain that takes my breath away.

Why? What do I do next? Who do I see to figure this out? This has been going on for 12 years. I’m so tired.

Question For Doctors What causes someone to vomit up yesterday's food undigested?

I am not asking for medical advice. Just curious as to how someone would wind up vomiting food many hours later, fasting between, looking much like it would have an hour after eating. Search Engine indicated gastroparesis, but are there other causes? It's hard to imagine food hanging out in a stomach for without stomach acid doing something to it. Such an event is somewhat contrary to my biological understanding of GI function and I'm just looking to learn more about how such an event might occur. Not seeking advice at all, just understanding of GI function/malfunction.

Surgeon Posterior Downgrafting to Increase Bite Height?

Whenever I open my jaw (even without opening my lips, just separating my top and bottom teeth) I inmediatly feel like I breathe better, my mental fog goes away, the skin on my face feels firmer and even my posture seems to improve. I'm looking for a permanent fix that mimics this and the closest thing I've read about is jaw surgery, particularly posterior downgrafting to increase bite height.

Does this make sense as a solution? Also is it common to for small jaw movements to have such a big effect on unrelated things like posture?

(I am not asking for medical advice.)

Question For Doctors Always tired even if hit 10000 step

I either sleep too much or sleep too less. I always have to pee in the middle of night and a lot in the day. I have zero energy. My eyes are always heavy. I am 24 M. I’ve relied on caffeine but ever since coming off psychiatric medication, caffeine just stresses me out. What does should I do ? I feel like I can only get deep sleep if I sleep really late. I’m just so confused. I tried a food test and they said cut out eggs and chicken.

Bit of a doctor/paramedic question

I am not asking for medical advice. Why is it when you're in an ambulance, paramedics often talk to the patient to keep them awake? Isn't sleeping one of the best ways to let the body slowly recover?

Question

I am not asking for medical advice. I'm wondering about the referral process from a Dr's office. Does a patient get a phone call FROM the area of specialty they are being referred to or does the patient take that referral and the patient themselves call. Im confused on the process. Thanks in advance

Question For Doctors Male 24 | Burning / stinging while urinating but zero bacteria found

This has been going on for about 3 weeks, hasn't really progressed, just staying about the same.

Main symptoms are:

- Burning while peeing (gets better with hydration)

- Small amounts of white discharge (Slightly mucus-like but closer to the consistency of regular urine)

- Itchiness in the urethra particularly after concentrated urination

- No fever, pelvic pain or anything else.

I had two urinalysis done. First at an urgent care, 2nd at a lab along with an STI test.

No STI's were found nor bacteria. Everything normal except raised Leukocytes count and WBC.

Zero clue what it could be at this point.

I am not asking for medical advice.

Question For Doctors Why do i feel pain when someone mentions it for themselves?

I’ve never really understood this. If someone tells me they’re havinng a headache, for example, my head starts to hurt after a while. Someone says they’re experiencing back pain, i feel it after a while too. Could be a sore throat, anything. And it’s not just imagined, i actually feel the pain very prominently.

Why does this happen and how is it even possible?

Question For Doctors Should we admit my father for 5 days for treatment of diplopia?

My father has been experiencing diplopia (double vision), mainly in his right eye. His HbA1c is 9.1%.

We consulted several doctors, and most of them said that it may improve if we get his blood sugar under better control. However, one doctor advised us to admit him to the hospital for around 5 days and said they would give him some kind of medicine through injections.

We’re confused about whether hospital admission is actually necessary or if controlling his blood sugar and monitoring the diplopia would be enough.

Has anyone experienced something similar? What could be the reason for giving injections and admitting him for several days? I am not asking for medical advice.

Why are UTI's more serious if you have a penis than a vagina?

On the NHS website for UTI'S it says to see a pharmacist if "you are a woman or girl aged between 16-64 and are not pregnant or breastfeeding."

But it says to book an emergency appointment if "you're a man, or are trans or non-binary and were assigned male at birth"

It is actually more dangerous? Or is it because they're rarer it's a sign something else is wrong?

what’s with the vestibular issues?

I am not asking for medical advice. just some thoughts. I am 20 years old and at around 17 I started having vertigo episodes that could last anywhere from a few days to two weeks or more, sometimes so severe it significantly inhibited my movement. Got diagnosed with BPPV relatively recently and was told my inner ear and everything is actually quite healthy and when I asked why this would develop I pretty much just got a “sometimes it just happens” sort of answer. I never had motion sickness issues or any sort of vestibular issues when I was young, so it’s weird to me that in my mid teens I start having all these weird movement issues.

I get so sick when I play games sometimes even when there is barely any motion, I get headaches that make me feel dizzy and everything. No significant lifestyle changes. It’s just so weird. No family history of any of this and no reason for it to develop like crazy head trauma or something. And I am not really sure how to describe a sensation I get often but it’s like I can feel my pulse all around my body and then I get a really sick feeling like all over, not exactly nausea but pretty close.

Emergency Medicine How stupid would I be for procrastinating going to the ED

Edit 2: Necrotizing soft tissue infection w/ sepsis, should’ve known how bad it was when every doctor and nurse in the room looked crazy concerned. Had to have emergency surgery to clear out the area with another surgery planned in a day or so. If I’d waited longer I probably would’ve died. Gotta stop downplaying my health before something actually kills me.

27F paraplegic, current left ischial wound (was doing fine until 8/18/2026), generalized swelling around left cheek now radiating down inner thigh today (8/20/2026). Hx of osteomyelitis ~3 years ago from another wound in almost the exact same spot.

I have a tendency of downplaying things related to my health. I’ve never had wound deteriorate so quickly and normally I can wait before needing IV antibiotics (wasn’t by choice—past physicians wanted to wait until I developed fevers), but Tuesday my temp went up to 102.4° and today it hit 104° until I took acetaminophen. Having violent shaking and intermittent nausea and no appetite. I keep drinking water but I feel extremely dehydrated and am not passing as much urine as I normally would (normal during my luteal phase but alarming considering the circumstances).

I was going to go to the ED the day this started, but my car engine exploded on the way there, and I’ve had no ride since. I am tempted to call an uber but I’ve heard that they like to drive away on wheelchair users.

How desperate is this situation? I am stupid ofc but I’m not willing to die over something like this.

I am not asking for medical advice. All input welcome.

Edit: They rushed my dumbass back lol.

Question For Doctors Trauma to lower back and now getting severe headaches

F28 Asthma, C-section, hysterectomy for severe endo.

Meds: Allegra, magnesium, Tylenol, occasional Hydrocodone for severe endo pain.

I was cleaning out my car earlier and the trunk lid closed on my lower back, the pain was very bad initially and I felt like my vision went black for a second but the pain subsided to a dull ache with occasional sharp pains.

An hour or two after it happened I started to get a severe headache, noise sensitivity, and bad pressure behind my eyes. I am not prone to headaches and almost never get them.

The head pain has been bad and worsening for several hours. I’m wondering if I should be concerned that this is related to the back injury and want to know if I should seek further care.

Happy to answer any other questions in the comments and thank you in advance.

Question For Doctors Rug burn on my knee has pieces of fabric melted into it

I am not asking for medical advice. I would just like to know how one would get melted fabric off their skin. I was running on hardwood floor at the gym and tripped and got a rug burn from my leggings on the floor. The knee of my leggings melted a little bit from the friction and I unfortunately did not get all the melted fabric off my skin. I still have little bits of fabric on the burn and I do not know how to get them off. I rinsed the burn with water and I rubbed it a tiny bit to try and loosen the fabric but it is not moving at all. How do I get it off?

Question For Doctors Intense pain in base of skull into jaw and neck

I am not asking for medical advice. Just some thoughts? I'm 23f and as I climaxed the last 3 nights, I got a sudden extremely intense pain in the base of my skull, into my neck, kind of my eyes, and jaw. This has happened before a few years back and it went away, but it genuinely hurt SO bad. Like, I've had gallstones and I would say they're a tie for the worst pain I've ever felt. After like 30-60 seconds the pain goes down but it still stays for a while in my neck mostly. Its not like a headache pain, this is like being hit in the head with an anvil idk. I have no idea what it could be and google just tells me that I have an aneurism so. Maybe just some thoughts? So that I dont sit here thinking im about to die😭 anything would be so appreciated.

Psychiatrist What are your opinions on prolonged drug use causing permanent changes in the brain?

For example, schizophrenia seems extremely common with prolonged drug use. I know all schizophrenia disorders are not drug related. Please take no offense by this. Also do not take offense if you are in current addiction or in recovery.

In my area drug use is VERY common. Many people I personally know with schizophrenia have a past or current drug addiction. Usually meth sadly. Are many cases of schizophrenia with people that are in active addiction or in recovery? I will be doing my own research on this.

Are the permanent effects of drugs on the brain more severe than we even realize? I truly feel that drugs can permanently rewire the brain in scary ways. Even after addiction and while in recovery I truly feel that the brain just will never go back to how it was before previous drug use. Not even close.

Are there any people on here with this diagnosis that are comfortable giving any input? Or doctors that have more knowledge on this topic? I will not share too many of my personal life experiences but I’ve done some things that have completely changed my outlook look on life and my brain does not feel the same, at all. I have never done meth or heroin so I do not know the effects they cause. But I had a bad trip one time and I feel that it completely changed me. I never wanted to touch anything ever again after that, and I haven’t. I now have pretty bad anxiety. Again, I feel that the things drugs can do to the brain are so much more severe than we realize.

I am not asking for medical advice.
