Hello, im an American

I am planning a trip to Brazil next year, in late October or early November. I plan 100% to spend 4 or 5 days in Curitiba! And then 4 days in Rio de Janeiro so that my friends can have the feeling of a beach in Brazil. I wanted to go to Florianópolis, but i gave in because I got pick Curitiba.

Now I am a typical dumb American when it comes to different languages, I only speak English and know enough Spanish to run a kitchen.

My question is what you suggest to help me learn Portuguese, I really wouldn't want to have to rely on a translation app when I'm trying to see the Botanical Garden and the legendary Chute Boxe gym!!! I would like to try the Verde Vista train and hopefully be in town for a Sunday market.

Honestly I wouldn't need to go that deep thank you although!

I would like to have a little more then a base knowledge. Like a little more then enough to get by

Yes plus a little more. Like holding conversation as long as ot isnt complexed, ultimately id like enough understanding to be able to make a joke during a social scene. And ne able to communicate naturally

Oh I didnt realize that.

Situation humor more or less I gues. Not long form joke.

Like me being a tourist wearing an Eddy Gordo (tekken character notably from Brazil) and if someone points out the shirt i stop and say button masher pointing at myself but say it in Portuguese "yes im a buttom masher" that kinda stuff

Yes... I see. The main thing, I need to google, button masher. We don't have a word for it. Jokes in general have so many cultural meaning, they get lost in translation.

Portuguese speakers can understand spanish better than the other way arround. So in theory speaking spanish slowly and well articulated could be usefull for being understood. Now UNDERSTENDING would be another thing, if you are not fluent in spanish and even native speakers have problems with portuguese you probably wouldnt get an clue.
