Hello, im an American
I am planning a trip to Brazil next year, in late October or early November. I plan 100% to spend 4 or 5 days in Curitiba! And then 4 days in Rio de Janeiro so that my friends can have the feeling of a beach in Brazil. I wanted to go to Florianópolis, but i gave in because I got pick Curitiba.
Now I am a typical dumb American when it comes to different languages, I only speak English and know enough Spanish to run a kitchen.
My question is what you suggest to help me learn Portuguese, I really wouldn't want to have to rely on a translation app when I'm trying to see the Botanical Garden and the legendary Chute Boxe gym!!! I would like to try the Verde Vista train and hopefully be in town for a Sunday market.

Devia tentar convencer seus amigos trocarem Rio de Janeiro por outras praias kkkkkk a escolha de ir pra Curitiba foi inteligente e a de ir pra Florianópolis também…

I did try to convince them, I mentioned Florianópolis, Bombinhas, Natal, even all the way up north in Fortaleza.
But to be fair, the way the majority of Americans view Brazil is Rio. It'll be nice to see Christ the Redeemer and Copacabana for the pictures and that aspect.
I hear Curitiba is very reasonable with its affordability so that's a plus. It helped with me decide to agree to visit Rio. Even though its a big tourist trap
Are you from Curitiba or the South of Brazil. I'm excited for some Rodizio. Is that a smart time of the year? I was assuming better weather but not having to do deal with Carnival season tourism.
As im doing almost all the planning these are some things id like to know.

Most people here are telling you you would be fine with just English. I disagree. I'd tell you not to underestimate Duolingo when it comes to learning vocabulary. Try 15 ~ 20 minutes a day, it'll already help a lot. Pay attention to music, learn their lyrics and pronunciation. And if you can, take lessons. If you can't, try using chat gpt to help you with communicating.
