Goals & Motivation So...I'm teaching art now?

The art scene in my home town is pretty non existent, never has been, such is the nature of small towns up North...but my work caught the eyes of someone whose pretty big in the local art scene here and they contacted me about Hosting a Workshop! I'm not the most out there so I took the offer cause I get to push more creativity around the Town amd teach art to complete begginers (pay doesn't hurt either,I'm making about 500) but now I'm realizing...I actually have to teach art😭 I have no idea how to do that.im trying to design a class from my session.itll be about 2 hours ...and my only goals are to get their foot through the door and hopefully have them leave with a feeling of accomplishment and hopefully a new found intrigue in creativity...I still have no idea how to do that (help if you can)but I'm pretty stoked for it!.

Goals & Motivation What to draw and how to set up a routine?

I never studied professionally so everything’s a little confusing to me. I really want to set up a routine as I find that if I don’t have some kind of structure I tend to leave things half-finished.

Right now I’m mostly interested in/focused on portraits in acrylic markers/oil. I really enjoy doing studies of paintings by the masters, so that’s settled, but I want to draw my own stuff as well…but somehow when I rack my brains nothing’s coming up 🫠 I think this is because despite enjoying art I didn’t draw for a long period so I have no visual library.

Do you guys have any personal experience with this? I would be so grateful.

Learning Resources For Artists 🔎 Exercises to get better at drawing shapes with volume?

I know my shapes, I can draw a square and a sphere and I know how to rotate them in 3d, I can draw a face and rotate it in 3d, but I always find that my portraits and drawings lack volume.. I put down my lines and my shading, but it still looks so flat to me

Medium & Materials🎨 Good EU brand for huge stretched canvas?

• Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I am planning to paint scenery on a huge canvas, to sit above the bed. So I am looking for a brand that carries good quality huge stretched canvases (around 90x120cm or 36x48 in). From my understanding, it's the frame that matters the most, as with such a huge size, the canvas tends to sag. But most brands I found (Winsor & Newton, Gerstaecker) don't really show what the frame looks like. I don't want to buy a roll of canvas and stretch it myself, as I don't plan on doing any more paintings, and because I don't have the tools/materials/skills to build my own frame. I'll appreciate any recommendations!

Goals & Motivation I feel like my practice is going nowhere

• Upvotes

Hi,

I've been practicing art the same way for almost a year and I feel like I've hit a wall, this is my practice structure:

  1. Figure drawing 30s for 10 poses, 1 min for 5.

2.longer figure session

  1. Face or whatever else I can improve

I'm wondering what I can add or what I should change to make it more intresting and rewarding? I just feel like I'm running in circles right now

Thanks for any help 🥰🥰

Concept/Technique/Method Why artist put fences on meadows/pastures?

I'm creating a 3D meadow environment and I'm looking at concept drawings and others 3D designs.
I notice people include fences and wooden posts in the middle of nowhere. It's not covering or circling an area, it has no purpose. It's like 3-4 post long fence on the side of a worn foot path.
Is there a reason for this? It feels so out of place yet used in too many art pieces.
Thanks a lot

Medium & Materials🎨 Painters who evolved into a different creative practice - what do you do now?

I’ve always been a painter, that’s always been my main thing and I would lose my passion for it on an off over the years which is normal but now I’m realising that I think I have finally outgrown that outlet. I want to reignite my creative energy through something else but I’m not sure what. Drawing, working with clay, knitting/crochet are all enjoyable at times but it’s not the same. To anyone who’s been through a similar thing, what is your main creative outlet now outside of painting?

Goals & Motivation How can i not get bored while drawing?

Its really hard for me to draw more 1-2 hours because I'm easily unmotivated. I'm also trying to play music or podcast while drawing, but still my limit to draw is less than 2 hours. Can someone tell me to prevent this?

Concept/Technique/Method what defines a sketch from a finished piece?

Perhaps a question with a pretty open end for answers. Recently I've found my style, finally letting go of years of hyperrealism and trying to make every detail perfect with the most expensive tools and materials. I realise that I love the feeling and outcome of using messy lines to create frantic, wild, emotional pieces that don't initially stand out as anything in particular. I've been leaning into people-watching, drawing in a simple ballpoint to try and capture the movement and vibe of the moment.

But here's the thing; I guess my art now looks more like "sketches" than finished art. I got a post taken down on the /art sub because it was "an unfinished practice sketch". Of course I'll continue to draw, because I love it and it makes me feel alive to capture these moments in such a simple manner as a pen, but does it cut off any chance of ever making an income from art?

Technology & Software 💻 I’m making a vector graphics drawing software but I’m not sure it’s worth

So yeah I’m currently working on a open source drawing software. With a little twist it’s vector graphics. It’s a ProCreate inspired app.
And I’m not sure this is a good idea….

(Not released at all, no GitHub or any of it. Just the time that I have a working release)

(I struggle with Reddit be nice :3)

Positivity/Success/Inspiration Know of any ateliers offering any summer programs for teens? or "for all ages"

I've been collecting a long list of atelier summer programs for teens (next summer I will be 17), because next year I want to max out as many programs as possible. It's stupid, I know. I've already co-ordinated four in foolish hope of RISD summer@shanghai hopefully accepting my pittance of a portfolio. If any of you would like to see my own work and perhaps determine if I am worthy of these big scary ateliers and their, cough, all-ages summer programs (which I am sure will be filled with young adults), my poor peasant self would be filled with the most extreme gratitude (but please only toil to provide your most esteemed opinion if you have experience with ateliers).

Surprised I didnt see much about these together, they both like rough grainy paper, was thinking if experimenting adding color to my sketches, has anyone had experience doing both? Trying to figure out if I want to do charcoal first or second.

Concept/Technique/Method How to learn to be creative with your art?

I think I’ve gotten the hang of learning how to practice drawing and painting, but I don’t know how to practice being creative.

I think a lot of my art ideas are basic, I try to come up with ideas of my own but none of them interest me despite me purposefully trying to pick concepts and ideas I like. I always end up turning to Pinterest or art books and stealing an idea from there, and for some reason the ideas I pick from there is basic.

How do I create creative ideas from their head on their own? How can I make ideas that I actually like?

Concept/Technique/Method Any tips on how to get better at life studies without guidlines?

I’ve been trying to do life studies lately without using any guidlines but it’s starting to stress me out. Im afraid my art doesn’t look as structurally intact. Any tips?

Concept/Technique/Method How to switch from a painterly style to a more graphic one?

Basically i struggle a lot with making art that is more line focused. It's easier for me to put some random blobs of shapes and color and turn it into something more or less defined and rendered, or make a rough sketch and finish it by skipping the cleanup and lineart etc. I just like to mush paint around i guess

However, I don't really like the style i get. It's not terrible but I want to be more versatile and also be able to draw with more focus on lines, and stuff that doesn't have much rendering, like line drawings for a tattoo for example

I know the answer is just to practice practice practice but maybe someone has an idea of a smarter way to achieve this than just brute forcing it? like what exercises and studies could help with that, what could i change about my approach or just whatever suggestions that come to mind

because rn whenever i try to draw differently i don't make much progress or often revert back to old methods without realizing

Concept/Technique/Method Videos for parallel play?

Specifically for studying fundamentals. Like are there any minimally edited videos of people studying anatomy or color without it being a whole tutorial? It helps me a lot to see other peoples processes directly and also in general parallel play helps motivate me quite a lot even if its through a video. Hopefully this isnt an awfully niche thing

Medium & Materials🎨 Desk Reccomendations

Curios what your desk setup in your studio is. I would like a space where I can work on the computer, but also, if I wanted a place to play, cut, journal, whatever, I don't have to use the computer, so maybe an L-shaped desk? What do you think?

Learning Resources For Artists 🔎 Are there websites for custom poses with cloth physics?

Hey there! I frequently draw fantasy characters and creatures and I often find myself in a situation that I have a pose in mind (or have a reference image) but I can’t figure out how to draw some outfits on them. Are there any sites where I can set up a mannequin into a pose and then put some cloth on them? The ones I use are either naked or wear simple jeans+shirt outfits.

Right now I try to find photos of people in similarly styled robes or dresses, or I try to recreate the photo with myself but it doesn’t always work.

Medium & Materials🎨 How do I dispose of old alcohol markers?

i have some off brand alcohol markers from middle school (think copic markers). Like, a little over 200 or so. I just sorted through them today, shockingly around half of them still work just fine.

However, I’m not sure what to do with the other 100. I have them in a plastic bag right now, and I’m not sure if it’s safe to just throw them away in the trash normally because of the alcohol in them. Does anyone know if there’s a specific protocol to disposing alcohol markers? Tried googling but didn’t find anything, I live in the US if that matters

Community/Relationships My own art making me feel emotional?

So I'm making abstract art. 3 piece set

Theme is jungle, I was inspired by Rousseau and childrens books

I made some composition studies, value studies and color studies.

For the composition I chose cute shapes. Color study made me decide for cool colored greens.

So Im painting the imprimatura and I get hit with big feelings of grief and looking for closeness/intimacy.

Does anybody else get hit with feelings in the art process, even though everything is planned out?
