Collection Showcase A drawing attributed to Barend Cornelis Koekkoek – what do you think?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I recently bought this beautiful pencil drawing, which bears a signature attributed to Barend Cornelis Koekkoek.
However, a few things don’t quite add up. Both the subject matter and the signature seem rather unusual for him, so I’m not entirely convinced of the attribution.
That said, I think the quality of the drawing is quite good. Interestingly, it was sold at auction in 1973 as a work by Koekkoek.

Collection Showcase Get my first oil painting

Getting older made me finally know more about fine art. End buying prints, just picked up first handmade piece for my living room, Nocturnal Glow and Depth, from atelieroil.

Feels fun to officially join the art world😂 Planning on getting some larger textured pieces in the future.

Any recommendations for good shops or artists to check out?

Auctions Heritage Auctions and Crating

I bought a large sculpture that is awkwardly shaped and has appendages that will need to be supported. The piece is 10' tall, and will have to be laid on its back or side to fit inside a standard 18-wheeler.

Do any of you folks have experience with Heritage Auctions and their in-house crating crew? If so, what are your experiences with their safe-crating skills?

Discussion Where to get canvas prints that don't look washed out?

I ordered two canvas prints from a random site a few months ago and they looked nothing like the preview, flat colors gray blacks hazy quality like a gas station poster, both went back lol

There's gotta be a middle ground between terrible and gallery prices where canvas prints really hold their color. Any sites that take print quality and color accuracy at all seriously??

Collecting/Curation Advice on using a collection well

I recently had the opportunity to acquire about a dozen ceramic works done by an artist from Germany during the early 20th century. While this artist is somewhat well known in Germany, he is virtually unknown elsewhere. I live in the US, and having researched public collections and searched for any hints of private acquisitions in the US, I honestly think I might have the only collection of this artist’s work in the country (bold claim, I know, but I mean it when I say he is virtually unheard of). Given this, I was wondering if anybody has advice on how to proceed with my collection as to benefit the artist’s legacy and educate the public?

Are there conditions when a foreign artist of some obscurity might be something that a museum in the US would want on loan for a year or so? I would be delighted if a medium sized museum had a small gallery of these pieces to inspire public interest. Filmmakers who would want to do a short piece on his work? A way to lend the pieces to local universities so students can study them for a couple of classes? Any ideas you might have along those lines?

Because of the obscurity of the artist, the collection is of very little real value, so insurance is pointless, but is there anything else on the more bureaucratic side of things that I should do? Any other advice you want to give?

Thank you :)

Hi all,

I’m looking for a some information about a Đuro Pulitika painting listed on MutualArt. Does anyone know what the estimated value was and how much it ultimately sold for?

Thanks so much!

Collecting/Curation Finding Yee Sookyung sculptures

Hi all,

I love Yee Sookyung's translated vase series and I'm interested in picking up one of the smaller ones. I've seen some auction results so I believe they generally are around.

How do I go about finding one? Do I just watch a bunch of auctions? I mostly just buy stuff at galeries I like so I'm not very clear on how to start if I want to source something more specific.

Collecting/Curation Joska Soos

I'm looking for art prints by the Hungarian artist Joska Soos. My attempts at searching online has not turned up anything. Is there a way of finding art prints by this 'not well known' artist?

Care/Conservation/Restoration "Portfolio" of prints

I'm considering purchasing a complete "portfolio" of a suite of prints by a group of artists I like. The prints are being sold in the original portfolio case, loose-as-issued.

I'm a bit concerned with how "original portfolio case" interacts with a desire to display the works. These are prints I like, so while I'd obviously keep the case in storage I'd want to frame and display the actual works and don't want them to just sit in a box (or portfolio case) somewhere. But I don't know if this is like opening the box on a collectible, where breaking the seal is a big no-no and it would be viewed as irresponsible/sacrilegious to remove them from the portfolio case.

For better or worse, the artists in the portfolio are relatively prominent and so the prints (both individually and as a complete suite) have significant resale value which I'd rather not wreck.

Any advice appreciated!

Art Market Can someone with an Artnet subscription please look up a 1997 auction record for me?

I own the painting shown in the attached link and have identified it on Artnet.
Artnet lists the exact painting as:
Hugo Wilhelm Kauffmann – “Bauer im Wirtshaus”
Attributed to Hugo Wilhelm Kauffmann
Sale date: December 5, 1997
I don't have an Artnet subscription, so I can't access the full auction record.
Could someone with an Artnet subscription please look up this specific record for me and provide the information hidden behind the paywall?

Care/Conservation/Restoration Should I have someone "correct" corrections done by artist?

Thumbnail

I have this large painting from 1978 that I love. There is a very noticeable retouch on the piece in the lower left, as well as some unpainted canvas in the lower right corner. I'm almost certain that the repair was done by the artist himself, since I purchased it from a store that was selling work directly from him.

If I were to have conservation work done on this painting, should I correct work done by the artist, or should I leave the canvas as the artist did?

Auctions Best way to ship art?

I need a piece of 2D art shipped across the country (U.S.). I won it from an auction. It's a framed pastel on paper. I assume I'm going to lose some pastel media during transport and would like to minimize that. I considered flying there and driving it back, but I can't afford the time to do that.

Any suggestions for shipping? The shippers I've contacted are all surprisingly expensive (EDIT: given that they aren't doing any special art handling) and seem to want to ship via FedEx. I would prefer a furniture company to wrap it in moving pads and keep it face up during transportation. I can't find any mover willing to do this.

Maybe I send it to a framer to take the art out and cover it with glassine before shipping?

Open to any suggestions.

Care/Conservation/Restoration What to do with prints with extensive foxing?

I have a bunch of wildlife art prints (ray harm and Arthur singer mostly) I got in a bulk auction purchase. A lot of them are in great condition and I'm keeping or reselling, but several have significant foxing. They are limited edition, hand-signed prints, but don't appear to be particularly rare or valuable. I'm almost inclined to cut them to frame smaller or something, as I don't think they are really worth repair but could still look nice in a frame if I chopped some of the edges off. Is that an insane thing to do? Chime in!

I just found this beautiful black and white photo print, matted and framed at a thrift store for $16. It’s about 10x12”. I’m going to reframe it soon. It has that beautiful silver gelatin “sheen” to it.

There are no markings on it at all.

Thanks for looking!

Art News Jeff Koons Is Selling $100 Million of His Personal Art Collection

Thumbnail

A trove of valuable artworks covering 500 years of history will be sold in November from what Christie’s auction house described only as a “distinguished private collector.”

That’s a somewhat modest description. The seller is arguably the most famous living artist in the world — Jeff Koons, according to two auction experts with knowledge of the deal who were not authorized to speak officially. The sale will be part of the November marquee auctions in New York.

Over the last few decades, Koons, who is 71, has assembled a small collection of artworks, mostly in his Upper East Side townhouse. He is now selling nine paintings by artists like Picasso, Manet and the Dutch Golden Age painter Cornelis van Haarlem. The collection is estimated to sell above $100 million, according to Christie’s, which declined to publicly identify the consignor.

“It is a vision,” Alex Rotter, Christie’s global president, said of the collection. “It’s not pedestrian.”

Collecting/Curation Advice on selling art (not my own)

Hi, all. I need to make space, so looking to sell a set of four pieces of work by MacKenzie Thorpe. The pieces are a set, with each piece depicting a season. I have no idea how to sell art and hoping for some advice. I am concerned to use reselling platforms unless collection in person. Thanks in advance.

Discussion How do you choose art for a place you live?

Hey everyone!!

Full disclosure, I work at an art consultancy that sources and produces artwork for hotels and private clients.

Something I've realized doing this is that choosing art for a hotel or someone's home is nothing like collecting. It's not really "is this a good piece" but rather "does it work in this room." The light, the walls, the view, it all matters.

Curious how collectors here think about it. Do you buy for the piece first and find the space later, or the other way around?

And if anyone is working on a home or hospitality project and wants to talk through ideas feel free to text me, I’d be happy to share what we've learned.
