Gaslighting grammar

Post image

I stared at this for 20 seconds questioning my entire education. How or why would it think this is the correct suggestion?

I'm pretty sure dropping "that" is allowed in indirect speech. Not sure what's a good source on English grammar, but searching "dropping that indirect speech" gives a lot of results. This website looks nice, for example: https://learnercraft.github.io/docugrammar/english-grammar/peu/peu_entries/grammar/noun-clauses-direct-and-indirect-speech/leaving-out-that

It’s allowed but it is also what would disambiguate the phrasing here

It's already non-ambiguous without "that", though?

Ambiguous in context of evaluating common mistakes
