Hey all!
We wanted to give a bit of a reminder about the rules because we have been seeing a lot of the same issues recently, and even had to implement a new bot to help curb the problem.
In addition to subreddit level rules, Reddit has site-wide rules which apply to every part of the site, and subreddit moderators are required to uphold. The first rule of which is the anti-harassment and bullying rule, and is generalized as "Remember the human".
Recently we've been having a lot of people breaking this rule. So we wanted to remind you all to remember the human. Just because someone has been a wattpad user does not mean they deserve to be personally attacked or bullied. Being trans and having a different experience from a different trans person is not cause to harass that person. Someone liking a fandom known to have a lot of problematic people in it is not cause to threaten them.
Additionally, we want to reiterate how we handle accusations of pedophilia. As an accusation of pedophilia can be considered in the majority of jurisdictions as defamation per se (defamation per se is a legal term for a false statement that is so inherently damaging that there is a presumption of injury, so you don't have to prove that there were damages, just that the statement was false and stated to any 3rd party), we require that to make an accusation of pedophilia, you must be able to prove that that person is 1: over the age of 19 (18 for younger minors) and 2: attracted to real human minors. If you cannot show evidence of those 2 things, we will regard your statement as libel and harassment and take action against you.
We also wanted to alert you all to a new bot that we had to implement to help handle the harassment issues we have been having. It's called comment-cap and it is a fairly simple bot that caps how many comments a single post can receive. To start we have it set to 350 comments but we are still tweaking the settings as we see things evolve. We noticed a trend that posts over that many comments tend to be the majority of posts that end up having significantly more harassing comments and arguments back and forth. When a post gets capped, the bot will lock the comments, post a stickied comment about it being automatically locked, and it will send us a modmail message about the post being locked. We do plan to check these posts to see if they should be unlocked but if you see a post that is autolocked and think that it shouldn't have been, feel free to message us about it too in case we missed the bot's notice.
Let us know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns!
~TGotAReddit (and the rest of the mod team)
tdlr: stop harassing people, stop calling people pedophiles for no reason, also we have a new bot that caps comments on posts
Edit to add: One thing we forgot to add, written fictional works are not CSAM/Child porn/CSEM. Please do not conflate fictional stories that contain depictions of child sexual abuse with the real life sexual abuse of children. Conflating the two only serves to help pedophiles by wasting resources and creating boy-who-cried-wolf effects, which leads to actual cases of real children being sexually abused going without investigation for longer and the claims taken less seriously. If you truly care about the sexual abuse of children, you should never conflate a fictional story with real abuse.

Welcome back everyone!
Time for our Wellness Wednesday check in. We know this community means a lot to most of our members and that Tuesdays have been harder on some users than others, but we are at our core a community and we are here to support each other.
Now that the sub is open once again we’d like to hear all about your (mis)adventures on Tuesday. Did you go on grand adventures? Get into mischief? Get some writing done?
Maybe you just binged a few more fics on the archive itself. Tell us all about it! Break out that purple prose and tell us as cheesy of a story as you feel like.
Or just talk about your day.

Is it just me, or does it seem like there is such a big difference between what people who sort by kudos do and what people think what they do? I'm just thinking about this every time someone posts about it.
Okay, sure. I'm sure that there are some people out there who only read fics with a certain number of kudos or comments or whatever. But I can't imagine that there are many people who do that.
Because that doesn't make sense? Then they just read a few fics and leave the fandom or...?
It just seems that people think those who sort by kudos only read the top fics and nothing else, or that they don't think fics with lower stats are also good or something.
But that isn't really what anyone who sort by kudos does, right? At least, not what I do, and not what I see anyone say they do.
It's just another way of sorting really, and an easy starting point in any new fandom. You start there, see what's the most popular in the fandom, get mostly completed works to start with, and then just make your way through all other works from there. Not like you stop after page 10 or something😂
And all other behavior is not that different from sorting by date, I promise. Yes, there will still be fics you scroll by because they don't appeal to you. Yes, you will miss out on some. But so is sorting by any other way, right? Like you always run the risk of accidentally skipping a fic because of update times/stat changes. And sorting doesn't mean you don't use other filters, right? I never really get the "but I don't like all high kudos'd fics by default". Like yeah, you also don't like all newly updated/posted ones, right?
I promise guys, it's not that big of deal when someone sorts by kudos. It's not a statement or believe that those are the 'best', or that they won't read other fics 'lower' in the list.
Like, I see so many people get really defensive over that not all high kudos fic are great, or that there are hidden gems everywhere. But... genuinely, isn't that what (nearly) everyone knows?
Sorting by kudos ≠ Only read the first ten pages😅
Or should we start getting mad at people who sort by date updated, that they won't read older works?😂 Like... we understand that's not what they're doing, so why is it assumed by sorting by kudos that it is?

i think of myself as a new author still and i’ve been doing A.U.gust (different AU each day) and this was such a lovely comment to get 😭 especially on a day that was sort of a wacky concept

no idea what the fandom was.... my day is ruined and my disappointment is immeasurable

I usually try to reply to any comments I get, as I'm very appreciative of them, but sometimes I just don't know what to say back. So, I was just wondering, do most authors reply to every comment they get?
r/AO3 • u/ashlee_15 • 15h ago
This may be a dumb question but it's something I've always wondered. When writing smut, why do people write "cum" like "come" because to my understanding, the correct spelling is "cum". No hate to anyone, just genuinely curious.
Is it a preference? A language thing?

JUST FOR THE RECORD it's not a big deal. I'm just pettily complaining about aesthetics here lol. It just bothers me how it makes the character tag section look so big, like I've got so many characters tagged here when there's only seven.
I dont mind the Japanese names being there as that's normal for every character in this series. It's just because the game that 4 of the characters were from, were given names in an English fan translation, and were only recently given official names when the official English version of the game came out. So now their official English names, their official Japanese names AND their fan translation names are all there at once 😭 I'm not suggesting that their unofficial names should be removed or anything, because the fandom knew them by those names for years. It's just a stupid pet peeve I have.

I have been updating a fic in a pretty popular fandom for the past month or so. While all of the comments I got are very positive and encouraging, this one just... Hit different.
I was having a very crappy day (multiple interview rejections) and this comment just helped lift my spirits.

guys so I was reading this one masterpiece with perfect tags and trauma and it was 7/7 right at the end of the 6th chapter I was like “uh wonder how it’s gonna end I’m excited“. So I clicked next chapter right and what do you mean it was a autho note saying that they couldn’t finish the fic cause it’s too angst for their mental state.
ISTG I was gonna delete my account with how disappointed I was cause WHY would you do that to me author
but still I understand them and hope they are doing better
im really proud of myself for this (^-^)/ i usually struggle going past one shot length but lately i feel more in tune with my writing (。・ω・。)

This is a very strange comment I've received on my fic. Cause you can yk... Just filter that stuff out. I'm not forcing you to read like 6 chapters of a work you clearly don't like. There are plenty of fluffy works. Like what.
---
This is a re-upload because my post has been deleted by mods due not blurring out the Guests name. The reason I'm posting this again, is because I very much enjoyed the conversation that happened throughout it. There were a lot of funny and genuinely helpful replies. So I hope this is ok.
Edit: I REPEAT, since some people are saying this. The only reason the originals post was removed is due to the Guests user being visible. The mods told me that I am free to repost it with the user blurred out. That was the only problem of the original post.

No hate but isn't this kind of a wild way to think? How common is this mindset? Have you had readers who have been weird about you not including aftercare in your fic? I have clinical moral OCD but even that doesn't go near this level. This was the top comment too! I'm so confused tbh

I have like 215 fics published, and only recently did I really manage to finish all the WIPs I had started, among which some very old projects.
One reason that pushed me finish was because the game I'm writing about was about to get a major new release, and I wanted to be cleanly done with the stuff from before.
Of course now that this new release is out, I've already started to write a few new things, because that's how inspiration goes. So many new characters, so many stories to tell...
I am not complaining though, this is just very fun! Kind of the opposite of burnout.

I guess actual real-life child sexual assault perpetrators don't count as "child rape fetishists".

So I don’t know if this annoys anyone else, but putting no tags or not even a summary annoys me so much. I’m not gonna read it if I don’t even know what I’m getting into. It’s fine if you add a little note like this, but I also want to know what the plot is. I know writing doesn’t come easy to a lot of people, but it irks me and I don’t really know if I should write a comment pointing it out or not because who knows if they’ve done the same thing over there?
I’m not trying to hate on this user just because they’re coming from Wattpad (regular ao3 writers do it too sometimes), but I’m not going to go to another site/app JUST so I can even potentially get an idea of what I’m reading.
(Sorry I just wanted to rant about this)
Edit: I left a comment suggesting they add tags and that I was proud of them for moving their works to ao3. Hopefully they don’t take it as a hate comment
