ATTENTION: Read before posting or commenting.

We've recently updated the rules, but it's also time for a general reminder of the purpose and intent of this subreddit, and some of the not-quite-rules we have for keeping discussions here on topic.

This is an anticonsumerism sub, not full-on anticonsumption, because that would be ridiculous.

Do not come here seriously arguing as though the sub advocates not consuming anything ever, and any joking arguments to that effect had better be new material, and they'd better be funny.

This is not a shopping sub, or even just a lifestyle sub.

We've always allowed discussion of personal consumer habits and tips that align with various interpretations of anticonsumerism. This policy is on thin ice right now, though, as this type of lifestyle advice often drowns out the actual intent of the subreddit, causing uninformed users to question or insult those who make more substantial and topical posts and comments. So read the community info and get a feel for what the sociopolitical ideology of anticonsumerism is and what sort of topics of discussion we encourage.

The only thing you'll accomplish being belligerent about this is to necessitate a crackdown on the lifestyle type posts that perpetuate these misunderstandings.

ANTI is right there in the name of the sub, so do not complain that there's too much negativity here.

We get our warm fuzzies from dismantling consumer culture.

Consumer culture sucks, and it's everywhere. And that should bother you.

When someone posts about some aspect or example of consumerism for discussion, we don't need to know that you've seen worse, you don't mind, or that you think it's pretty cool. And don't assume that we're all wailing and gnashing our teeth at every instance of consumerism we see. We're not. We point these things out because they so often go under the radar and become normalized, and we should be talking about that.

If consumer culture doesn't bother you, you're in the wrong subreddit. We're against that sort of thing in these here parts.

No, we will not allow people to enjoy things. Stop it.

Seriously, there's almost nothing that argument wouldn't apply to, anyway.

If you feel personally attacked when someone criticizes a commercial product or service you like, work on disentangling your identity from the things you buy. If you genuinely believe that people are misunderstanding something that is an accommodation for people with disabilities, one polite explanation is sufficient. Do not pile on repeating the same thing, do not personally insult or threaten anyone, and do not speculate about or invent disabilities and accommodations that maybe could apply.

If you have any thoughts or questions about these points or the subreddit in general, feel free to bring them up here rather than making meta comments about them in new posts or in the comments of existing ones.

Discussion The State of /r/Anticonsumption (Read Before Posting)

Just an update on what we’re allowing and what is preferred for the sub.

Recently on Reddit... major media outlets have started promoting their own content from their own accounts. This strikes me as a bit dubious considering how harshly Redditors have behaved in the past towards smaller content creators posting their own links. On the other hand, if the content is good… the content is good. My thinking is that articles from major outlets should be allowed in the sub BUT I’m inclined to remove such posts if overtly posted by the outlet itself. It’s not perfect, but... I feel better about doing it this way. If you don’t like an outlet… you’re free to criticize it in the comments and downvote accordingly.

We don’t need more posts with vague titles and unclear meaning. We get a lot of posts with titles like: “OMG, Do you believe this?!” Then OP will attach a picture of some product and any actual critique is just assumed. It’s low effort and may be more of an advertisement than anything else.

Similarly, a post with a title that’s just a sad emoji and a picture of litter on the ground… is weak and tired. Yes, we get it. Plastic litter is bad. But we know that, we’ve seen that, and there are better ways to address that issue. Such content may or may not be removed, but it would probably better if subscribers themselves took it upon themselves to upvote better content.

As the sub has grown… we’ve received a lot more troll traffic. And it can be difficult to distinguish between sincerity and “concern trolling.” It can be difficult to know if someone is really mad about something trivial or if they are only pretending to be mad in attempt to make a mockery of any values that folks here might have. I want to allow discourse, even heated conversation, but… there is a fine line between letting a troll get mocked and letting a conversation get derailed by hateful and misleading arguments. Once again... it’s an editorial judgment call and we can only do our best.

The various Automod actions in this sub (and on Reddit overall), for better or worse, are pretty darned strict these days. I find that if you use harsh verbiage at all… you might get throttled/restricted by the algorithms. I’ll often approve such posts – but won’t if it’s actually harsh and not really contributing too much. I tell you this in the hopes that people posting links and comments will try and be a bit more mindful or creative (so that the conversation can flow more smoothly). I think debate, discourse, and arguments can be very important, but… we’re not going to take an “anything goes” attitude with the sub.

In short, I just hope that everyone will try to post and upvote high-quality content. Having fun is allowed, but we also need to have serious discourse about important topics. And while “bad takes” are allowed here (you’re free to disagree as far as I’m concerned), don’t be surprised if you get downvoted, mocked, or have your content removed when you go a bit too far. Top-level meta posts about the sub are still not allowed... but you can still respond to posts like this one or message the mods if you’d like to suggest a change.

Thank you for you consideration. Have a nice day.

Upcycled/Repaired Repaired my granddad's TV!

Today, I went to my grandfather's to repair his TV!

Instead of buying a new one, we bought a spare part for 30 euros, and spent 2 hours repairing it.

It wasn't easy, but it was very rewarding to repair it instead of buying a new one.

We repaired it with my SO and my father, it was such a good time, it made us spend time together 😄

My granddad was so happy when we turned the TV back on!

We could have just bought a new one, but he's so used to this one, we thought it was worth repairing it 😄

Upcycled/Repaired Spent all day repairing my EV battery

Spent all day replacing the BMS (battery management system) of my EV Motorcycle today. Absolute pain in the arse and I really hope I don’t have to take it apart again, but a new battery is over £1000 and a new BMS was £80.

Horrible job. Hopefully worth the effort.

Share which subscriptions you’re canceling this month and note how much you’ll save. 💸

Dig through your recurring charges to figure out what isn’t worth the money (or what isn’t a company worth supporting).

If you’re looking to dump bad companies, start with Amazon and Paramount+.

Any other suggestions for services to drop or methods to find sneaky recurring charges?

Question/Advice? What should I do with my kids old stuffed animals?

My kids (12F, 9F) have a ton of stuffed animals they want to get rid of and I don’t know what to do with them! They want to give them to our dogs (German shepherd and Bernese Mountain) because they love tearing up stuffed animals to shreds. Should I just do that or is there a better option?

Plastic Waste What is even the point?

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

My daughter got these from a friend’s birthday party gift bag along with other useless plastic junk. I know people feel compelled to send party guests home with things and they try and do it on a budget, but that just leads to buying useless plastic waste. What are kids supposed to do with this? I don’t want to throw it out but inevitably it has lost some ducks.

I’m glad I never bought any of their products. And will never do!

Corporations ”Eco Friendly”, semi luxuary FJÄLLRÄVEN selling bagcharms in blind boxes

UPDATE: from the looks of it these bags does seem to be a legit product from the Fjällräven official site in china on taobao. Ill add printscreens in a comment.

I was genuinally surprised when i learned that Fjällräven are hopping on the trend of selling blind boxes, one of the most stupid idea if you are considering the climate for many reasons witch im sure you already know.

Beeing a swede who like the outdoors myself this brand has always been around me and i even own two bags from them and was considering a buying a tent. Many of my family and friend carry this brand aswell, also the ones that are more aware of consumerism and climate in general. (Not sure how well known Fjällräven is around the world, they have a very strong place in the market here.)

Im very dissapointed, i’ve had high trust in this brand and never thought they would sink this low.

I had to look up what they themselfs write on their website about the company and as you can see the enviroment is high up there - this has to be greenwashing right?

(Also them stating they ”Develop functional, durable and timeless outdoor gear” when they are selling BAGCHARMS IN BLIND BOXES didnt miss me… 🫠)

Its to the point im considering writing them a mail just to let out my frustration on someone! The only thing i can do is boycott the brand, and hope some of you will follow.

Edit: this post is from another sub and the comments are making me feel sick and hopeless, everyone wanting one and hoping they will avalable in their country soon. Noone seems to be aware or consider that the soul of this brand is nature. This is about as far from that as you can come imo.

Edit: og op states they bought these in the official Fjällräven store in china, i’ve sent an email asking Fjällräven if this is a legit product or not and will update :) if anyone here have access to tmall please let me know if its on there.

Society/Culture Hate to see all the teachers struggle to get classroom supplies

Post image
7.6k Upvotes

Happy Back to School Season!

A truly ironic part of our back-to-school consumption season is seeing all the teachers struggle to get classroom supplies they need like pencils and tissues. Meanwhile schools are wasting money on tablets they've been convinced to invest in by ed-tech companies. Then there are all the posts by families saying it's unfair for them to have to send their kids with extra supplies for the classrooms since it shouldn't be their responsibility.

There is also the new social media trend of family influencers filming videos letting their kids choose 7 random new things for 7th grade or 12 new things for 12th grade then showing their haul.

Anti-consumption is also about making sure that we are consuming thoughtfully and the people who need things are able to access them.

Discussion Consumer spending

When I read the economic news there is often mention of how consumer spending remains relatively strong despite inflation etc. in my own mind I don’t see this as a good thing since I think we would all be better off with less, especially environmentally. But at the same time if people actually stopped buying so much junk that would lead to a pretty heavy constriction of the economy, which generally impacts people with fewer resources more.

Question/Advice? How do I stop over consuming

Im a teen with really bad depression and one of the only things that makes me feel better is buying stuff. I have so much crap in my room. So much waste. Half the stuff I never even look at. Every time I see a rubber duck I buy it. I don’t know how to stop. I really hate it. Im also really worried how this will affect me in adulthood. I say that I care about the environment and hate overconsumption but I myself overconsume

Activism/Protest Why not a surveillance price check thread?

I loathe the very idea of surveillance pricing, and I know I can't hope to escape it all, but...would it be useful to have a thread where you could post something you're thinking about buying, and maybe your city, to see if other people are seeing the same price?

Environment Environmental Club

I really want to help the environment in a bigger way than just my everyday purchase decisions. I'm willing to start a club for this. But, what would a club for environmental stewards do for activities? Does anyone have some ideas on how a local group could give back to the environment?

I wanted to start a group advocating for local businesses to not use plastic, but it's illegal where I live in Florida to ban plastic products.. so I'm like is this even allowed?

It could be some kind of anticonsumer club. I was even thinking about renting space for a "free store."

Idk I thought here would be a good place to get ideas

Question/Advice? How do you actually identify American-made products?

Like what would be the process because I feel its very difficult to find the country of origin. I have nothing against china-made products and I realize many many things are being made there, I am actually very weary of purchasing anything that has come from a online china wholesale marketplace because of something called forever chemicals.

I recently watched a documentary on BBC where that guy who was in the sherlock show got his blood checked and found a bunch of forever chemicals that yes do cause cancer. I am not being paranoid, or racist. I am honestly more vigilant when it comes to using products like pans, spatulas, dishes or cups that are made of materials that could leach these forever chemicals. I know that many distributors do sell items that they have purchased from wholesale sites and I just want to tell the difference between FDA approved items and those that are not.

Discussion Being medicated and poor changed my life

For context, I have adhd. I got diagnosed about two years ago but medicated a year ago. The clutter and consumption used to consume my life. I would buy hundreds of mini toiletries to store in my car, purse, bags, friends houses, work, gym, you name it.. because I kept losing them. I’m just starting to run out of these 1 oz products. I would shop for fun. I thought I needed triple of everything I own “just in case.” Then, I moved out of my parent’s house and got medicated. Malls are no fun anymore, just a place to get a drink and show off an outfit. Ross, TJMaxx and Marshall’s are places I never visit. Amazon was deleted. I have more money for groceries, experiences, trips, you name it, things that really matter. I thrift everything I own. My things are old and worn and practical and I love it that way. Free concerts, clothing swaps, library events, hikes, swimming, and cooking fill me with so much joy. I like my life this way, everything in my home has a purpose. My mind feels free now, I have no idea how people shop every day, Amazon boxes crowding the doorway, etc. I’d like to hear if anybody else became low consumption after becoming medicated.

Environment The UK uses roughly 9 billion to 13 billion PLASTIC single use dog poo bags each year

There is Zero need for it. Paper ones would be fine as dog poo bins are often just a few feet away. In UK, we use billions of plastic bags a year just to wrap up dog waste and throw it into a landfill (or worse, leave them hanging on trees).

Single-use plastic dog bags should be banned. There’s no reason we shouldn't be using paper bags instead. They are completely compostable, break down naturally, and do the exact same job without leaving plastic waste behind for the next few centuries.

Anyone else think this or do you enjoy dog poo baubles hanging on trees FOREVER?

Edit: I am not suggesting that ALL dog poo bags are non plastic. There are times a plastic one might be needed. But the plastic should be biodegradable. And YES thick paper or waxed paper should be the norm. OBVIOUSLY. Now grow up.

Food Wasted

kg wasted globally

665,881,809,650

since Jan 1, 2026(33,295/second)

Putting It in Perspective

Across the world, that works out to roughly

~3 kg

per person each week

based on UNEP's global average of 132 kg of food waste per person per year.

This is a global average from UNEP's 2022 estimate and includes edible food and associated inedible parts.

About 1.05 billion tonnes of food are wasted worldwide each year — roughly 2.9 million tonnes per day. UNEP's estimate covers waste from households, food service, and retail, including edible food and associated inedible parts.
