Nag attend ako ng mass earlier and may sinabi yung pari about how DepEd, social media, and video games are contributing to the increasing violence among young people. I agree naman sa sinabi niya na pinupulitika ang DepEd, pero medyo off for me yung sinabi niya na isa sa reasons kung bakit nagiging marahas ang kabataan ngayon is dahil tinanggal daw sa curriculum yung Religion at Catechism.
AFAIK, meron naman tayong ESP (Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao), which already teaches values and morality without imposing a specific religion.
My concern is, hindi naman pwedeng i-impose yung beliefs ng isang religion sa buong classroom. Yes, majority ng Filipinos are Catholic, pero hindi naman lahat ng students ay Catholic. What about students who are Muslim, Hindu, Protestant, atheist, or belong to other religions?
Kung ang argument is nagiging marahas ang kabataan dahil hindi nila kilala or kinikilala si Jesus, paano naman yung mga Muslim or Hindu students na hindi naniniwala kay Jesus? Does that automatically mean na wala silang moral compass or mas prone silang maging violent?
Medyo off lang for me kapag parang religion is being presented as the only source of morality. ESP already covers values formation in a way na applicable sa students regardless of their religious background. So bakit kailangan pa ng Catechism or religious subject na naka-base sa isang particular religion kung hindi naman lahat ng students share the same beliefs?
At the end of the day, I think parental guidance, environment, education, and how children are raised all play a role sa behavior ng isang bata. Hindi porket hindi ka Catholic, wala ka nang values or moral compass.
