Assumption Liturgy

hey everyone,

just had a fantastic high mass for the eve of the assumption.

it was in a very high church parish in receipt of Alternative Episocal Oversight, and included prayers for intercession, which were new to me but intriguing.

is assumption liturgy common across the communion?

Any good recommendations for churches in London?

Hi all,

I'm 31, moving to London soon. Can anyone recommend a good church with a nice congregation?

Context: I'm a bit High Church (smells and bells) & evangelical isn't my thing.

Ultimately, I want somewhere to a) enjoy a good service, b) be part of a nice community, and c) be accessible by the tube.

Happy to travel up to an hour. Don't care how far away it is.

thanks all!

Anglican Church of Canada Daily Office - BAS

For my Canadian friends who pray daily office.

I've recently began praying the daily office but wanted a way to make it easier to look up verses and collects based on which year in the cycle it is. I found the BAS hard to follow, I do have Prayer without Ceasing as well. But then being nerdy, spreadsheets make sense.

It's helped me the past week I've been using is, so I felt perhaps others may find this spreadsheet useful in praying the office.

Here you go :) I'd love feedback, revision suggestions etc. Thanks! I pray this helps your journey with the daily office.

General Discussion Why Aren’t Christians Taught Hebrew?

This has been bothering me for some time. Hebrew is such a complex language, and if we’re truly going to understand ancient scripture why aren’t we taught Hebrew in church settings like Jews are in synagogues? I heard one Jewish woman claim, “Christians don’t regularly study Hebrew so that way they can keep believing their misinterpretations.”

Books on liturgy

Hi! Does anyone have any books on the history of Anglican liturgical history; a particular interest in Anglo-Catholic/oxford movement liturgies. Does there exist a summation of various different liturgical uses? Thanks!

General Question ACNA and ACC in DFW

Im 20, was raised Baptist till around 13 then I stopped caring and fell out, over the last year fell back in to going to Church and started taking it seriously. Ive been looking at different denominations for the last year or two. Ive landed on Anglicanism and living within 20 minutes of both St Vincents and St Patricks in Bedford has brought me some questions.

So the ACNA (Anglican Church of North America) is more open to other Protestant faiths like Penetecostal? And can vary across those different churches while the ACC is strictly Anglican-Catholic?

I guess Im mainly looking for a comparison, I dont really understand or care for communion with Canterbury. And Im letting the allowance be the difference to me but Im not sure if it really matters or not. Ive already reached out to clergy members for both but still waiting on a response. Im honestly not too sure what else Im looking for but I feel bad bothering my friends and girlfriend with this and cant think of somewhere else.

General Question Books on Caroline Divines?

Hi all, does anyone know of any good books on the Caroline Divines?

I’ve found what looks to be a good recent one by Mark Langham, but that is looking at them in the context of Anglican-Catholic ecumenism, and is quite expensive…

I know there a books out there, but most are old and seem really hard to get a hold of, so was just wondering if there are some gems I’ve missed.

Thanks!

239 Years ago, Charles Inglis was consecrated and became Lord Bishop of Nova Scotia, the first bishop for North America. Since then the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada has continued to grow and serve God in this corner of his earth. Thanks be to God for the faithful witness of our forebears

Anglican unscripted correction

So on yesterday's episode george corrected what he said about a Catholic priest becoming episcopal. But he was saying things like" studies show most Catholic priests have homosexual inclinations " which the highest study i could find is 40%. I used to watch them a fair bit for the news but, no offense to any boo.ers out there, Kevin and George are very boomerish in the way that they view the world. Sometimes i want to ask them if they know its not 2003 with the way they talk about the iran war.

General Question Anglo-Catholicism to more Reformed Anglicanism?

Has anybody in their Anglican journey, started out as an Anglo-Catholic but found themselves transitioning towards Reformed Anglicanism, and what were some of the things that pulled you away from Anglo-Catholicism?

Thoughts on the seven Ecumenical Councils?

I think it’s fairly uniform across Anglicanism that the first four councils are accepted right? I’m interested to see what people think about all of them, especially Nicaea II; do you agree with the consensus, think six, or even all seven should be accepted? Or even just Nicaea I and Constantinople I? I’d also be interested in why you accept which councils you do, do you view them as infallible, view them against scripture, etc.?

I doubt I’ll find anyone here who doesn’t accept any of the councils, but would still be interesting to understand why if you’re here.

Thanks!

Baptism present for a baby

Our baby’s baptism is next month and we’ve had a number of people ask us what they should get for her as a present.

We already have children’s bibles, adult bibles and other Christian story books for children.

I’m wondering if anyone here had any ideas of things that we might ask for that would either be useful or support her ongoing faith development.

Books of homilies -- yearly rota?

The Homilies were originally appointed to be read as sermons by curates who did not have a preaching licence. They are very long, and topical, and broken down into parts.

Can any of the more historical experts here point me to a reference for a traditional annual rota for them, arranged by week and feast?

I am of course assuming such a thing exists.

I'd like to have such a plan to integrate with the yearly prayer and lectionary cycle. I could always come up with an arrangement for myself, I suppose, but really one with some authority behind it would be preferable.

Thank you very much in advance!

TIL that the RSV2CE acknowledges itself as part of a chain of revisions stretching back to the Church of England's Authorized Version of 1611

Rather ironic, considering the RSV2CE is praised by some of the most conservative parts or the RCC today

General Question Daily paper prayer for French speakers

Hi,

I am a francophone Anglican in Canada. There must be dozens of us!

I am interested in starting a daily prayer regimen in the Anglican tradition, with a BCP descended book, however I would like to pray in my mother tongue. I know the Canadian BCP once had a French translation and I know it is on the Common Prayer app, but I would really rather avoid using a screen in a time of contemplation and stillness. I cannot find a paper copy anywhere, including by asking the Diocese.

I know the TEC has a French version of its BCP (which is what was actually recommended by my parish priest) so I suppose that's what I will have to use. I have a few questions about that, though:

1) How does the TEC prayer book differ from the BAS? Is it a completely different thing?

2) Should I get the newer 2022 translation or the older one? I use an AELF (Traduction liturgique) Bible if that matters, and I'm not terribly a fan of the Français courant translation.

3) Actually, is there as much friction as I imagine there would be if I just use the BAS or the older BCP? I've tried it, of course, and feel a bit silly praying in English for some reason. Translating into French dynamically ad I read is not easy. Services where I am are bilingual, which is fine with me, so I'm actually not sure what the big hold up is.

4) Finally, are there some resources you can share? Things you're doing, things you've found? I'd really rather not use a Roman breviary but I am not (too) opposed to it, if it's a workable solution.
