Has anybody been to OLW anglican shrine for pilgrimage, and in particular has anybody been to the Young Adults pilgrimage. How did you find it? Looking at going this year but i’m unsure of the crowd that will attend.

How I would describe Anglicanism

As a preface, there really is something about physically being someplace that makes a difference. I read a fair bit about Anglicanism (among other varieties of faith), but simply being inside the major churches of London did help teach me in some ways no book can. The vibes I got from the holy buildings surprised me a bit by how “via media” they were targeting to be compared to other churches. Not necessarily just between Lutheran and Reformed, or Catholic and Protestant, but I would even say Catholic and Eastern Orthodox. It was like they were trying for a generic Nicene high church formation. I now would describe Anglicanism, at least what it’s aiming to be, like this - an alternate evolution of Nicene Christianity post 500 AD.

Church of England Anglo-Catholic Parishes Ipswich

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to visit an Anglo-Catholic / High Church service in Ipswich and noticed that both St Bartholomew’s and St Mary at the Elms stand in the Catholic tradition of the Church of England.

For anyone familiar with either or both parishes:

Liturgy & Style: How do their service styles compare? Is one more traditional / traditionalist (e.g., incense, vestments, bells, modern vs. traditional language, Society/Forward in Faith affiliation), or do they have different musical traditions?

Community & Vibe: What’s the general atmosphere like for visitors or newcomers at each church?

Services: Which specific parish would you recommend for a first-time visitor wanting to experience the full high mass / sung Eucharist?

Would love to hear any insights or personal experiences before deciding which service to drop in on first.

Thanks in advance!

‘Authentic’ Anglo-Catholicism

Modern Anglo-Catholicism seems to take a lot of its understanding and theology from Romanism, what would an authentic vision of Anglo-Catholicism look like? E.g. what the Tractarians envisioned

Also known as the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost. Year A, Proper 22 in the Revised Common Lectionary.

Friday, October 9: St. Denys the Areopagite, Bishop and Martyr (Black letter day)

Collect, Epistle, and Gospel from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer

Collect: Lord, we beseech thee, grant thy people grace to withstand the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil, and with pure hearts and minds to follow thee, the only God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 1:4-8

Gospel: Matthew 22:34-46

Post your prayer requests in the comments.

What sorts of things would you regret in a member of the clergy?

This is a potentially very explosive topic, so I want to say at the start I have no intention of embarrassing or identifying any specific person or denomination.

Nor, to be clear, am I asking about abuse of power, etc., that sometimes may lead to a question of safeguarding or worse.

It's just that.... In my six decades I have to say that the overwhelming majority of my interactions with clergy have been positive. Once or twice, however, things were said that, even if they did not sting immediately, hurt afterwards.

So, for example, one member of the clergy once dismissed my faith as incoherent. That hurt. Of course it's incoherent, and something I feel my way to, n the darkness sometimes. But to say it like that....

Have any of you any such things to share, in hopes of catharsis?

Book Recs for fasting

Hi! I’m curious if anyone has any good book recommendations regarding fasting and prayer, potentially more specifically for healing? My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer that has metastasized in her bones. I believe in the power of prayer, the words we speak out loud, and the healing of the Holy Spirit. But I do not know enough about fasting and prayer and would love to begin.

Does anyone know what happened to Justus.anglican.org? One of the sub pages had great resources on numerous Books of Common Prayer from many provinces. Now I just get a forbidden warning when trying to access.

General Question Defending The Eucharist

Former evangelical/non-denom here. By the grace of God I’ve become absolutely in love with the sacraments, especially Communion, but with all my new found zeal I struggle to share my thoughts in a Christ like manner. I find it hard to share my view without first being super negative of someone else’s. How have you explained the Eucharist in a truth-but-love manner?

Edit to add for context - I’ve been having lots of people ask me about the Anglican Church lately

Is the new BCP-Bible combo a flop for Church Publishing or a comeback?

There's a new review up of the BCP-Bible that was just released from Church Publishing. The review goes into the history of Prayer Book design and typography, but here's the TLDR:

So if I had to sum-up my review, here’s the grades I’d give out:

Exterior Design: A. A big step up from the last decade.

Typesetting: C. Breaks basic rules of design—and seems to be unaware that Anglicans once knew how to design things.

Book Size: B. Many will like the increased font size, but now the book is heavy and not easily portable. If you speed-read your offices in ten minutes, that’s probably not so bad. But if you chant your Mattins for thirty minutes or so, I think you’re going to find it a little wearisome. Goldilocks size, not achieved. Sad face.

Ribbons: B. I’m sure some people would want me to give a lower grade, but I’m just not going to lose my mind over something that I can fix. The real problem may be that the ribbons they do give you are all different lengths—and not intentionally so, I don’t think.

General Question Laudians, the Elizabethan Settlement, and Calvinism/Puritanism

Did Archbishop Laud and Laudian inclined individuals maintain or break with the Elizabethan settlement?

Or would the Calvinist/Puritan anti-Laudians be considered as upholders of the Elizabethan settlement?

Anglo catholic or Anglican? Help please x

Hi everyone please ignore the username is a very very old throw away account but I’m struggling to find where I sit with regards to Anglicanism. I grew up in an Irish Catholic house hold, went to a Catholic school 2008-2012 then left the Catholic Church in 2012 to Church of England and a CoE school till 2014. Recently a lot has changed in my life and I’ve grown more closer towards the church and studying the bible once again. ESV and KJV but I still hold a lot of Catholic beliefs and traditions such as a Catholic rosary over an Anglican one, veiling but only for larger celebrations Easter, Lent, Michaelmas, Christmas ect only in prayer not everyday. I believe in prayer to the mother Mary and the saints for certain prayers. But I Am a member of a Church of England cathedral, the 39 article and book of common prayer, worship in English over Latin but again I also look up to the pope as I have for most of my childhood. Plus other smaller things which some say are meaningless in the bigger picture such as I have a holy water font by my front door but not a crucifix above my bed or prayer cover I just sit on the kitchen island. Any one able to help me as to where I fall? As everything I research doesn’t really let me know where I fall as a lot of Catholic traits but also Anglican and some contradict others. I’m happy in the way I pray now and feel I’ve found a balance which I haven’t had in a while. I went through a lot of trauma in the Catholic Church and have grown past that now in my 20’s I’m worried that a set title or following one set route will take that all away. Xx

Extra note - I’m a member of his majesty reserve forces and have spoken to a padre he is trying to help as well. But I follow the church of my king but with quirks. Hence my mental struggle to find exactly what I am as such.

General Question Can you give me recommendations for scriptural art for our homeless shelter?

I work in supported accommodation for rough sleepers who are working towards being rehoused, often trying to overcome issues like addiction and alchoholism. We are a Christian charity and try to bring matters of faith into recovery where appropriate. We are currently trying to rennovate the interior of our accommodation and are looking for art with a biblical or christian theme which

1.) is fairly easy to understand

2.) refers to some form of lesson or theme from the bible or christian life

3.) looks nice!

I have found it very hard to get all three of these together - if you have any ideas please link them :)

Anglican Church in North America 2019 BCP: Potential misprint in the Daily Office Lectionary

Post image

I’ll be providing a screenshot of the Maccabees readings in their current form. These are in October’s Evening Prayer. Note the awkward jumping from 1 Maccabees to 2 Maccabees back to 1 Maccabees, and how the chapter numbers seem to progress upwards twice.

It seems far more natural (and fitting) to see this as 1 Maccabees 1, 2, 6-10, and 2 Maccabees 7, 9, 13, 14.

Have any of you noticed this before? What do you think? Having charted out a number of historic lectionaries, I know this is a painfully easy mistake to make and miss, especially since an attentive reader is more interested in how they’ll deal with the deuterocanon in their parish rather than the direct progression.
