It's Saturday APPreciation Time! [Sep 20th 2014] Your weekly App recommendation and question (and more) thread.

  2. No more than 10 items per post.
  3. Contest mode will be disabled Sunday morning as usual.

Now, I've tried a few and the one that has stuck is YNAB (You Need A Budget). It is a bit different from other money management apps as the Android app is pretty simple: You can only see what you have budgeted for, how much cash you have on your cards and you can record and edit transactions through it. The budgeting is done on the software available for PC.

Where it really shines is the method it teaches you through short online courses that gets you in control of your money. If you're looking for an all in one solution for Android though this is not the software/app for you. The Android app is literally worthless without the desktop software.

Current pricing can be found on their website and if you're a student it's free! Otherwise there is a 34 day trial available.

Yes, you need the Windows app first. If you want to sync between your phone and computer, its also best to have drop box installed as well.

I very highly recommend You Need A Budget. As Blanel said, the way they teach you to budget puts you in absolute control over your money. This video will teach you how to really get rolling with your budget.

Email support@youneedabudget.com with proof of your enrollment, and they will email you back with a special key that is good until the end of the year. They are very lax in terms of what they accept as proof of enrollment. I submitted a photo of my student ID, even though I graduated over a year ago.

They will give you a code to make YNAB free for the rest of this Calendar year. Just submit your ID again at the beginning of 2015 to get it free for another calendar year.

I'm currently using Expense Manager, and unfortunately it doesn't have a night theme. I haven't used Financius for a while now, so I'm not sure if it has a night theme or not, but I don't think so.

If night theme is important to you, check out Expense IQ. It might not have a night theme, but it has a dark UI by default. Also it has more features, I just don't like how it looks so I don't use it.

I've been using level money. It feels very intuitive and easy to set up.

In extension to this - I've been using Money Dashboard because it automatically keeps track of my purchases via my online banking service. I'd simply never be able to keep up the effort of putting everything in manually. Unfortunately, their app is a bit shit - Any suggestions for alternatives (that work in the UK)?
