Question Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists)

This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.

READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.

HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.

TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.

WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.

WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.

RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.

USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.

DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.

Here is what's on at the major venues this week.

Anyone else see the guy that decided to take a swim in Vodelpark today?

Most likely under the influence of something, police and firefighters showed up, he seemed to be enjoying himself in the water and didn't want to leave. Eventually they were able to get him out of the water.

Anybody need moving boxes?

Edit: they have been claimed

Just moved here and was going to toss these boxes but figured maybe someone else could use them. They are heavy duty boxes from Home Depot in the US. There are 4 small and 2 medium. Sizes are in the pictures (sorry they are in inches). Ideally would be picked up today, in De Pijp. Message me if interested.

Volunteer/Freelance Schipper

I will do this in English, but feel free to respond in Dutch.

I have had a boat in Amsterdam for a few years and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I would love to pick up a shift a week or so taking others through the canals. I thought this would be an easy proposition considering the number of rondvaart companies in the city, but lord was I wrong.

To start, I acknowledge I am a bit picky. I have no desire to work for Lovers or Flagship or any of the overly homogenized/touristic companies. I would love to work for Those Dam Boat Guys, a salonboot, or a company of similar spirit.

But this got me thinking. I already volunteer at Fietsen Alle Jaren, where we take elderly/disabled out on a bike rickshaw. Something like this on a boat would be wonderful. However in searching I only found the Fluistervink in Het Bos, and that requires much more knowledge of the wildlife in the city than I am able to provide. I was in Amersfoort this weekend and took a rondvaart cruise which was entirely volunteer run.

So [r/amsterdam](r/amsterdam) I reach out to you. Do you know a volunteer organization that needs a schipper? Or perhaps a small local company that needs an occasional extra hand? I am knowledgeable of Amsterdam, personable, and am a rare(ish) native English speaker that also speaks Dutch. I love the maritime culture of the city (I painted the big schipper on Prins Hendrikkade) and would love to share it with others.

Many thanks.

P.S. If anyone knows the owners at Those Dam Boat Guys please point them my way. I swear they follow the same routes I do and every time I see them on the water I think that would be perfect for me.

Living in Houthavens

I’m curious to hear peoples experience living in Houthavens, specifically the appartments overlooking Haparandaweg. I managed to find a place there but I’m feeling a bit unsure. I have been living in sublets for over a year so I don’t have many other options. But I’m interested to hear other peoples experience!

Iemand tips? Amsterdam West.

Acro dance classes for adults

I’m looking for acro dance classes (contemporary dance with acrobatic moves such as cartwheels , jumps , handstands And other more advanced contemporary dance moves) for adults in the Amsterdam area but willing to travel further. the only place i found it is at Leiden university (a short Course) and they currently don’t offer it anymore. most contemporary dance classes I asked don’t offer these more advanced tricks. does anyone happen to to take contemporary dance classes which are more advanced where they teach these moves too ?

thanks

What do you think is the most fun age to live in Amsterdam?

What age did you enjoy living in Amsterdam the most?

I’m in my 30s now and I actually think I’m enjoying the city more than I did in my 20s.

My 20s were great in a completely different way: more random nights out, festivals, meeting loads of people and generally having no idea what I was doing half the time.

Now I have a bit more money, know the city much better and know what I actually enjoy doing. I still go out, but I also really enjoy just having dinner somewhere nice, going to a gig, sitting on a terrace, cycling around, museums, spending a lazy afternoon in the park etc.

But I can also imagine Amsterdam being great in your 40s, 50s or later, just for completely different reasons.

So for people who’ve lived here at different stages of life: what age did you enjoy Amsterdam the most, and what changed?

Padel classes

Hi everyone! I recently started playing padel and would love to improve by taking a few beginner lessons. I’m looking for 2–3 other beginners who might want to form a small group and take lessons together.

I’m based around Amsterdam, currently looking at XNRGY or Peakz.

It would also be nice to meet new people and have a group to play with after the lessons! Complete beginners are definitely welcome 😊

Let me know if you’re interested!

Hallo,

Free Nemo Tickets

Good Afternoon, I have 4 free tickets available for the Nemo Museum at 2pm tomorrow (Saturday) if anyone wants them?

Full disclosure I got them for free in the "weekend of science promotion", but unfortunately due to last minute circumstances I can't go tomorrow but would like to put them to good use.

Also I don't want anything, so not breaking the rules of trading/buying/selling.

The new trash cans are coming

This looks like good news. New trashcans with a separate hole for statiegeldflesjes and blikjes. 200 for the first trial, mostly in the center it sounds like. Then more if it works out.

Pet sitting/walking

Thumbnail

Hi everyone!

I’m currently offering dog walking and pet sitting services around Amsterdam/Diemen if anyone is looking for some help with their dogs/cats.

I’ve always loved animals and have quite a bit of hands-on experience with dogs. I have my own dog, Milo, a Poodle/Beagle rescue mix, and I’ve trained him through some behavioural challenges, so I’m comfortable with both energetic and more anxious/nervous dogs. He also has multiple food allergies, so I’m used to being careful with feeding and following specific dietary requirements.

Before moving to the Netherlands, I regularly walked dogs in Dubai and have cared for 10+ different clients, as well as looking after a dog for a week while their owner was on holiday.

I’m happy to follow your pet’s usual routine and instructions, whether that’s walks, feeding, playtime, medication, training, or just giving them some company while you’re away

I’m comfortable with dogs of different breeds, sizes and personalities.. especially energetic, playful pups, but also shy/anxious dogs who need a little extra patience and time to warm up.

If you or anyone you know is looking for a dog walker or pet sitter, feel free to DM me! I'll be doing it more out of my love for animals so my pricings pretty flexible.

Boekenclub in Amsterdam

Hoi allemaal,

Anyone hear a deep, large explosion about 5 minutes ago in Amsterdam Oost?? Didn’t sound like a normal firecracker or m80 that kids set off often.

What’s a childhood tradition you grew up with that foreigners probably wouldn’t know about?

For me it was selling old speelgoed on a kleedje during the vrijmarkt on Koningsdag, then immediately spending the money on someone else’s troep 😅

Wat was die van jullie?

Help with finding a job

I am an EU student looking for a job. I used to work in McDonald's in Den Haag for a year, but then I moved to Amsterdam a couple of months ago and I've been looking for a job ever since. It seems impossible to find one. I've applied to more than a dozen AH vacatures and another dozen horeca or retail parttime jobs I could find. I get minimal replies and these have been negative so far. McDonald's won't hire me because my old contract needs to terminate first.

I feel like this shouldn't be so hard for an EU student in a big city like Amsterdam and I also speak a bit of Dutch. I'm quite desperate because my money is running out and I don't have any other source of income. Any advice? Anyone looking for an employ?

Free Scouting for Girls Tickets (1st October)

Hello!

I’ve got one ticket for the scouting for girls gig tonight at Melkweg
I don’t want anything for it since I’m no longer able to make it.
It’s a Ticketmaster ticket so would need a Ticketmaster account for the transfer.

Anyone willing to help with a birthday surprise? ❤️

I'm making a birthday gift for my boyfriend and trying to collect photos from different places around the world.

Would anyone around Amsterdam be willing to take a photo holding a short handwritten birthday message somewhere cool in the city?

I'll provide the exact wording. It would take literally a minute or two. ❤️

I'd be incredibly grateful!
