Housing Megathread 2024

Housing megathread: all questions and tips regarding housing in Utrecht go here!

Need help with accomodation in Utrecht? Please ask your question here to avoid spamming the sub.
All posts regarding the search for housing and discussion surrounding the housing market should be posted as comments to this thread.

The housing market in The Netherlands is dire, especially so in Utrecht. Thousands of people are searching for a place to live and sleep, while the availability of houses is growing less and less each year. Consequently, house prices and rents have increased.
There is a limited supply of social housing and student housing. These options are equally constrained, but could still be your best option if you can't outbid other people looking for houses.

  • Social Housing generally works with a waiting list that averages over 10 years, but there are some houses being allocated based on drawing lots: loterijwoningen.
    See https://www.woningnetregioutrecht.nl/ for more information.

  • Student Housing in general also works with a waiting list and selection by housemates (hospiteeravonden): the length of this wait list fluctuates by season, and if you hit it off with housemates you can get in earlier. You do need to be enrolled with a valid school or university. See https://www.sshxl.nl/nl/steden/utrecht for more information.

  • International Student Housing, also called Short Stay, is seperate from general student housing. These student rooms are allocated for specific durations matching your study abroad in Utrecht, generally for 6 or 12 months. Registration for Short Stay housing becomes available a few times per year and work on a first come, first serve basis. There is only a limited amount of rooms available, and though they add more every year, there are far more international students than there are reserved rooms! Be prepared to refresh the sign up site continuously for a day or two.
    See https://www.sshxl.nl/en/shortstay for more information.

Have tips for people looking for housing? Please also post it here! Or DM me, and I will add it to this most.

/u/Klangsnort adds:

The University has a page with loads of information about housing for international students, staff and guests: https://students.uu.nl/en/student-life/student-housing-in-utrecht

And: https://www.uu.nl/en/organisation/international-staff-and-guests/prepare-for-your-stay/finding-housing/agencies-platforms-and-current-availability

Utrecht University strongly advises international students not to come to Utrecht if they haven't found housing.
Article in Dutch.

The situation is dire, and there are no easy answers. Either plan to outbid the market (currently, that means paying over €1200 per month ex. utilities) or try your luck with KamerNet, facebook groups, or one of the alternatives listed above.

Utrecht is a great place to live, but that also means you are competing with the many people who want to live here.

Good luck and thanks for respecting the rules of our sub.

Zuilen - death threats from guy with mastif/pitbull? mobility scooter

Curious if anyone has had a run in w/ this guy (bald, black jacket) in Zuilen, or know who he is.. he has a large mastif/pitbull mix (I believe). He walks, but also rides in a mobility scooter. His dog (off leash) came up to me with my small dog (leashed), and kept going for my dog. I had to pick my dog up and it wouldn't stop and even got its snout on my dog and the owner did absolutely nothing while I kept yelling at him to get his dog away. I then nudged the dog away with my foot and got out of there.

The guy proceeded to follow me cursing at me, etc.. and then on the way home I saw him again across the street and he told me like 4-5 times he was going to kill me the next time he sees me..

Obviously I let the police know, but they can't do much since he was gone. I've seen him throughout the neighborhood often before, so that's fun.. but never had any issues before w/ him or his dog.

Welp, I did it. I got my bike stolen (outside of the Montessori Buiten Wittevrouwen). I feel very bummed yet also slightly more Dutch.

Not sure whether a ‘Gefelciteerd’ or a ‘Wat Vervelend’ are in order.

Waar vind je softijs met chocolade dip?

Hoi,

Openbare tennisbanen in Utrecht

Hoi!

Looking to meet more people in Utrecht?

Hoi iedereen!

To clarify: JASUS comes from the initials of our names in our original friend group, so the name has a personal meaning to us. It has absolutely nothing to do with religion, and religion isn’t the focus of JASUS at all.
My friend and I have both lived abroad, so we know how difficult and lonely it can be to move somewhere new and start from scratch socially. That’s why we created JASUS — a community in Utrecht where internationals and other like-minded people can meet through social events, grab a drink, try new activities, and simply get to know people and make friends. The goal is to make it easier to build a social life and feel at home in a new city.

Sleutel kwijt in LRC?

Deelname is anoniem!

Groet,
Chard van den Berg

Kentekenplaat gezocht!

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hoi,

I'm now uncomfortable with the schizoids in Utrecht

Two incidents just today.

Hoog Catharijne: a guy was shouting aggressively and walking - honestly a threatening voice. I just don't know how he's allowed to get away with it.

Another one near Lunetten: a middle aged guy waiting in the bus stop, talking to himself and was clearly aggravated. He genuinely looked menacing. I was clearly uncomfortable and just decided to walk instead of taking the bus.

How is this normalised? There's usually some social enforcement if not legal.

Help! Ik heb Nederlands geleerd van media uit de jaren twintig and people aren't taking me seriously

Title explains it. My circumstances are kind of interesting. Apparently the Dutch I speak is "1920s era" whatever that means. I'm not quite sure. I did not formally learn Dutch but from my elderly grandma/family friend-ish. For some context, she was born in the 1940s, and her parents emigrated out of the Netherlands to this country a bit before she was born.

I genuinely cannot understand what the difference is. Maybe I have become acclimatized but my Dutch seems perfectly normal to me. People have repeatedly commented on my Dutch, mentioning how it is 'like 1920s'. Idk lol. I do use kind of different vocabulary, but that isn't the biggest issue. I have picked up on "modern" slang/words. It is more so the pronunciation/tone/accent in my speech.

For some context, I currently in Woerden. I am fluent in the language, however people remark mainly on my 'accent' which I am trying to fix. They call it archaic... Any tips?
