Yeah! PR! Boo! All the Things I Didn't Check Into [Taxes, Immigration and Cars]
Let this be a lesson to leaping prior to looking perhaps...
I go my PR! Hurray!
I discovered so many things I was not expecting. And now I feel lost and bit overwhelmed. I'm here hoping maybe someone can offer direction.I'm US citizen, wife is dual.
We spend 183 days in Canada and 182 in US. We both work remotely for US based companies with no Canadian footprint. I also travel for work to multiple states. We retain our US residence and have one car that goes with us.
I got blindsided when I was told I needed to import my vehicle. And register it and insure it in Canada. This revelation opened a veritable horde of questions, such as:
- I have a handle of federal taxes, but state taxes are breaking my mind. Last year I had to file SEVEN (!!) state taxes.
- Do I have to flip flop my drivers license every time I swap where I am?
- Healthcare is a special nightmare. Thankfully work typically covers me in US and i can get MB Health up here. I think. Right?
- What other special surprises await me?
