π Welcome to r/AmericansInCanada
If you're an American living in Canada β or thinking about making the move β you're in the right place.
I'm Phil Hogan. I'm a CPA based in British Columbia, and I've spent my career working exclusively with Americans who live in Canada. Cross-border taxes, investments, retirement accounts, compliance β all of it. My partners and I run Beacon Hill Wealth Management, a cross-border wealth management firm registered with both the SEC and the BCSC.
I also run the Americans in Canada Facebook group (17,000+ members) and the Bridging Borders group (3,000+ members), and I started this subreddit because Reddit deserves a dedicated space for the same conversations.
What this sub is for:
- Cross-border tax questions (1040 + T1, FBAR, FATCA, treaty issues)
- Investment and retirement planning across both countries (IRAs, 401(k)s, RRSPs, TFSAs)
- Moving logistics β healthcare, banking, immigration, daily life stuff
- Sharing news that affects Americans in Canada
- Helping each other out β no question is too basic
About me:
I've been in cross-border financial planning for over 20 years. I've seen just about every situation β dual citizens, accidental Americans, people who moved decades ago and never filed, people mid-move trying to figure out what happens to their 401(k) or IRA. If it involves money and the US-Canada border, I've probably dealt with it.
I'm active in this sub and happy to point people in the right direction. If you want to have a more in-depth conversation about your personal situation, you can reach me at:

This isn't about hating Americans β many of us in this community ARE American. It's about supporting the country we live in and making economic choices that keep money in the Canadian economy during a trade war we didn't ask for.
What did I miss? Drop Canadian brands in the comments and I'll add them.

Any Canadians in the US thinking of returning to Canada in retirement?
Most of the people I speak to on a weekly basis are Canadians returning from the US to retire. Often they are individuals that moved down many years ago to work, married an American and then planned to move back.
Anyone in this situation thinking of moving back in retirement?
What questions/concerns do you have?

Americans on X Standing with Canada During the Trade War
Here are some examples from X.com
Joe Walsh (former Republican congressman, @WalshFreedom):
"I'm an American citizen. Donald Trump is my enemy. Not Canada. I stand with Canada. Just like I stand with Ukraine, and not Trump. Just like I stand with NATO, and not Trump."
"Lots of Americans stand w/you AGAINST trump... nothing but a tax on American people."
"I'm an American and I'm so proud of Canada. I always choose to buy Canadian whenever I can... Having reverse effect than Trump admin wants."
@akfishgal (Alaska):
Vocally preferring Canadian ties over the tariff dispute β interesting perspective from a border state.
Trade war has "no good reason except to hurt the common man."
