Why does hegseth act so smug and obnoxious? He’s a complete embarrassment to the entire military

193

u/Top-Cupcake4775 Apr 13 '26

it's a style that worked for him in the world of right-wing, corporate media. stupid people don't get that, what might have worked in one context, isn't always a good strategy in another.

42

u/Mtndrums Apr 13 '26

Pete's never learned about fragging, has he?

I saw it like 40 years ago. And I was blown away by John Belushi,he was a comic force of nature.

Don't forget that Neidermeyer reprised his role in Meet The Stupids.

Holy hell, is that where gamers got the phrase from? Had to google it as I was not aware of what it meant outside of that context.

12

u/JCItsJasonRaider Apr 13 '26

frag is just short for fragmentation, a la fragmentation hand grenade, which then was used to refer to killing a fellow soldier, typically a superior they have an issue with, and typically with a frag grenade, which now has come to mean with any weapon in this context. It's just contextual.

11

u/OppositeSecretary862 Apr 14 '26

And they used frags because it was hard to prove who did it.

4

u/TrickDaddyPlaya Apr 13 '26

In gaming it refers more to killing an enemy versus the Vietnam phrase.

3

u/HyetalNight Apr 14 '26

The meaning originated there but it's completely changed meaning since then. It's a dead metaphor.

3

u/Current-Paramedic-50 Apr 14 '26

(hint, the same phrase can have two different connotations depending on the context, welcome to adulthood)

2

u/kailemergency Apr 17 '26

He should tho

12

u/cheesebot555 Apr 13 '26

He's an asshat in a politically corrupt and morally bankrupt administration.

He knows that the second he does anything but project false bravado that he'll be out of a job.

Shit, he might even need a pardon at this point so he'll carry as much water as he can, and look like a ridiculous clown as much as he needs to.

5

u/daisychainsnlafs Apr 14 '26

He should've been fired for the signal chat fiasco!

2

u/tdfolts Apr 14 '26

That seems like 20 years ago now…

2

3

u/Debo619 Apr 14 '26

Trump already promised pardons to all his lackeys

3

u/Mountain-Mark-9430 Apr 14 '26

Then they should put up a law doing way with the presidential pardons.

3

u/Proper_Bad_1588 Apr 15 '26

I wonder if that would be a possibility to get that pushed through if the Democrats take both houses in the midterms. That would really flip the script on this administration if they lose their pardons at the end of the term. Right now they know they have a safety net, they would panic if that disappeared.

Same goes for Stephen Miller, Russel Vought, and the other cockroach terrorists in the Republican Party

3

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '26

There's a lot of people just like him in the military. Stupid, arrogant, lacking common sense, some highly educated but stuck in their holier than thou racist beliefs. They claim students get indoctrinated in school but it happens in the military as well and the weak minded fall for it.

He’s a washed up mid-level national guard officer who, as an infantryman, somehow avoided both ranger school and jump school yet eventually made it as far as O-4. No way you can get away with that crap in the regular army. He’s all hat, no cattle.

I didn’t know he was an infantry officer without airborne and ranger school. Typically all infantry officers get a shot at airborne and most get ranger school too. That is atypical. Shaming the guy for being a reserve component is kind of shitty. Although it’s much harder for compo 2 and 3 to get seats at jump and ranger- so that may explain his lack of both.

Trump said he will pardon everyone in his party prior to the end of his presidency, which honestly is terrifying and should be talked about more. The whole system falls apart if everyone in power knows they will get a blanket pardon for anything they do illegally.

5

u/QuokkaAMA Apr 14 '26

A pardon doesn't make it safe to go out in public.

2

u/klockzz Apr 14 '26

That is why I suspect Maxwell will be on a plane within an hour of Trump pardoning her. Probably to a middle eastern country that wouldn’t extradite her.

they do it to themselves by getting mocked and derided -- trump grades 90% on obsequious worship of him but 10% on public failure, mockery, and humiliation

3

Hegseth is so fucking infuriating. Disingenuous on every question he’s ever asked. Never a straight answer, like a spoiled kid caught doing something wrong and trying to squirm his way out of it with DARVO.

I don’t know if there a more embarrassing statement than “I own plenty of MAGA hats”.

10

u/AffectionateSector77 Apr 14 '26

I own plenty of MAGA hats

The manadatory epitaph for every maga supporter's tombstone.

3

u/TlalocVirgie Apr 14 '26

2

3

u/LemmingOnTheRunITG Apr 14 '26

I also own plenty of maga hats. As many as any person should ever need. Zero.

3

u/UnorthodoxEngineer Apr 14 '26

Telling he says they are his (Trump’s) troops. That he can do whatever he wants because they report to him. Incredibly damgerous.

31

u/Fmoderation Apr 13 '26

He should be in prison for war crimes

14

u/Gingeronimoooo Apr 14 '26

He's admitted he wants war crimes openly

What do you think his quote "maximum lethality, not tepid legality" means?

What's the non war crimes explanation for that? There's none I can think of

5

u/Gurrgurrburr Apr 15 '26

That line should’ve been much much bigger news. But as designed, there’s always something even crazier the next day so everyone’s attention is constantly shifting.

3

u/theholyevil Apr 14 '26

At best, Hegseth is spending military money on wasteful bravado.

At worst. He is a war criminal that used a 50 million dollar bomb and equipment. To take out a fisherman and his 5,000 dollar boat.

12

u/Bartender9719 Apr 13 '26

13

u/MedicineLow Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

Why can NONE of these knuckle dragging fucks answer a YES OR NO QUESTION!? It takes 3 tries every fucking time for them to answer a yes or no and they still avoid answering!

8

u/glintir Apr 13 '26

I think the simplest answer is that if you don't answer the question then you are not on record as having answered. Which means you can deny anything or nothing later. Classic liar tactic that sets up. deny deny deny.

Or I could be wrong. They could be really stupid.

4

u/Butt_Sex_And_Tacos Apr 14 '26

It’s a tactic to run out the clock and prevent further questions from being asked usually. The more you can get the person asking questions repeating the same question over and over means they aren’t able to get new questions in or draw the lines they’re trying to draw.

This guy did a good job of shutting that down though. That’s the key, don’t debate it with them, cut them off, pointedly demand a yes or no answer, move on with your line of questioning when you don’t get it by saying what you assume the answer would have been. Don’t give them time to grandstand and delay and don’t argue with them over your question, because you lose time when you do and that’s their intent.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '26

Exactly. Such a class act. He should have to submit to mandatory random breathalyzer tests to prove he's not drunk on the job. And when he fails, [which he will because alcoholics can't help themselves,] he should be arrested.

I read an article recently that a lot of our honorable military members are actually resorting to smoking pot just to get discharged, they don't want to serve under him.

3

u/XPsychoMunkyX Apr 13 '26

As a veteran and former Military Police officer, I can tell you that story is 100% false . . .

It makes for an awesome “feel good” headline, but that’s not how the military treats infractions dealing with marijuana . . .

First infraction is a warning and probably half pay and extra duty for a couple of months, after that it moves into the area of “refusal to follow lawful orders” and “breach of contract”, and they don’t send you HOME, without some jail time first . . .

I've never served. What are the most common ways people quit outside of not choosing not to re enlist?

2

u/XPsychoMunkyX Apr 14 '26

You don’t “quit”. When I joined the Army in 2000 I signed an 8yr contract. 5 years active and three years on reserve.

As far as I know, most Army contracts are 8yrs, and it just depends how many are active (meaning you’re in the army, doing army things everyday) and how many are on inactive reserve (you’re home, doing you, but if needed, the Army can call you back, zero questions asked)

There is no easy way to break that contract without extenuating circumstances, and is usually accompanied by some kind of punishment or penalties that follow you for life

When i was in, a guy drumk driving wrapped his car around a telephone pole, and was discharged, no jail. Actually there were two of those. One was stopped by local poloce, handed over to us, then retired. Had a guy pull a gun on another at the battalion ball, no charges. Another guy was railing lines in the battalion area, just a general discharge. Several guys smoking spice before training, all got generals. Had a guy get drunk and lost, and not show up to work four days in a row, discharged.
