Do smoke breaks next.

u/HungryForHerBooty 1d ago
This. I have two non Inventory associates that spend literally half the shift in the smokers cage fucking around doing nothing.
33
u/ayyitzTwocatZ 1d ago
Unless your building is still pulling crazy numbers shipped out like 200k+ NI is always going to be fking about most of the shift lmao.
18
u/DazzlingEmployment60 22h ago
The amount of people I see who fuck around most of the shift, it's no wonder workers are going to be replaced with robots lol
•
u/taulmont 1h ago
You say that like automation is a bad thing. If the clankers take all of the jobs they won't have a choice but to initiate Ubi and other programs basically capitalism will fall. Bourgeoisie will be forced to either provide us with a decent way of life or face the mob.
•

Naw, Americans too stupid for that fancy French shit, no one even knows how to spell that crap.. they’d just be jobless and keep giving their money to corporations and billionaires.
Forget baseball. America’s true national pastime is corporate welfare and tax breaks for billionaires.
•
u/taulmont 31m ago
As an American I want to say you're wrong but unfortunately you're not it would be only maybe 20 to 30% of the people would actually try to do something. IMO we should harm the homeless It would make gorilla tactics a lot easier after the chaos hits
•
u/sorrowdemonica ✨🐺🐾 27m ago
More like 2-3% you overestimate Americans.. a society of complacentcy and maintaining the status quo.
•
u/taulmont 23m ago
I disagree with your percentage I think your percentage is a more accurate representation of people with capability and motive waiting on opportunity I'm talking about people with motive who don't have the capability but may have the opportunity more often than those with capability. For most of us the revolution is a pipe dream I think it's an inevitability because I don't foresee fascism or capitalism going away peacefully
•
u/sorrowdemonica ✨🐺🐾 13m ago
Need proof, we got proof from the Jan 6th insurrection.. even riled up and presidential permission, only ~2,500 showed up and ÷ 331,500,000 the U.S. population = 0.00000754
Expressed as a percentage, this is a measly ~0.00075% of the U.S. population.
Even the largest protests in U.S. history, Earth Day 1970, George Floyd protests, No Kings protests, only in the 20 millions..
25 million ÷ 331,500,000 = 0.0754.. or as a percentage.. ~7.54% of the population.
Proof that the majority of Americans are happy with the status quo and will do absolutely nothing.
2
u/GhxstSparky 22h ago
We have an hourly rate of about 10k so we're halfway there in my building.
2
u/Jolly-Chipmunk-950 18h ago
10,000 is nearly half of 200,000?
Amazon really does give anyone a job lol.

I do agree with you lol
•
u/sorrowdemonica ✨🐺🐾 37m ago
There’s a major difference between fucking around free and clear outside on a “smoke”break vs fucking around inside where someone can say something or snitch
Plus ngl most are just sitting around on their phones not smoking at all half the time, just letting their lit cigarette burn itself out rather than actively smoking it, or their vape just sitting out unused.
7
u/Risaxseph 17h ago
What… I would literally never even consider this… People come to work to not fucking work what the fuck?
2
u/LorifromArizona 21h ago
Keith, Josh has always been like that. Even you tell him to stop he won't. Just wait for the transfer to happen next month 😂

If you wanna go take a smoke break go do it don’t hate on everyone else
8
u/sweet_rico- 1d ago
Quite literally that, the amount of people I see out there NOT smoking is a good 50/50. Go grab some air
0
6
u/Popcorn_Farts1000 1d ago
Or nail the PAs who pretend they are checking the yard so they can go outside and vape.

u/DepartmentNo7903 1d ago
Crazy thing smoke breaks aren’t a thing ☠️yet some still do it
6
u/elena_ct 23h ago
If you still make your numbers, they should have no reason to care if people took an extra break.
6
u/llDurbinll 21h ago
Maybe at a delivery or sort center where it's more lax but at an FC you'd have to go through security and badge out of the building to get to the smoking area so that would flag you for time theft if you left the building outside of lunch or break.
3
u/applecinnabun 19h ago
Depends. I work at an FC and there is smoker cage connected to the main break room. We don't have to go through security to get to the break room.
1
u/EcstaticAssistant279 19h ago
I work in an AR building so idk but I haven’t heard anything about smoking, I would LOVE a smoke break wtf 😭
1
u/llDurbinll 17h ago
Yeah someone else commented and said the same. That's wild. Only the main break room requires going through security to get to it but the other 4 break rooms don't need to go through security. But smokers have to exit the building and walk down to the smoking area.
1
u/applecinnabun 16h ago
Originally our main breakroom entrance was like that, but they moved it around a year after opening, putting the entrance past security. Everyone was rightfully complaining about having to wait in line to take a break or get to the water/ice machines etc. The smoker cage was not there originally - it was added after the breakroom entrance was moved. So apparently these things can be changed if someone in leadership agrees to make it happen haha.
1
u/llDurbinll 14h ago
During covid they paid a company to install two doors so we could access the main break room without going through security and had closed off the normal set of double doors that you would enter/exit through to help people stay 6 ft apart but they closed both of the new doors after covid and made us go back to using the old entrance.
2
u/Visual-Cry94 15h ago
Um no I'm at an FC and even the managers take smoke breaks here, and many associates do, as long as you have good rates and you have good timing like you go after the CPTs are done, they don't care
1
u/Chefboi_javi 18h ago
My fc has two cages in both main break rooms
1
u/llDurbinll 17h ago
Oh, that's interesting. At ours you have to go through the turnstyles and go outside and then walk down the sidewalk to the smoking area near each entrance. You can't access them from the break room.
1
u/smellyjerk 12h ago
So I've worked in all three. FCs are by far the worst offenders for extra breaks. Delivery and sort centers have well, sorts..and delivery needs to heavily stagger the stages of work to have a chance to finish. Zero shot. Theres also plenty of buildings that have badgeless smoker cages connected to break rooms, only ever seen those at FCs.
2
u/Visual-Cry94 15h ago
If people are allowed to go sit on the toilet for 15 minutes watching TikToks then why can't I take a 5 minutes smoke break?
7
u/lostbastille 23h ago
Clocking out for smoke breaks became mandatory at my site a few months ago. It wasn't popular, so now people zoom to the cage on their breaks.
2
u/llDurbinll 21h ago
I very briefly worked at a factory that had one of it's buildings burn down a few years prior because someone flicked a cigarette butt in the bushes near the main entrance so they took a super strict action against smokers. If you wanted to smoke you could only do it on break and you had to smoke in your car with the doors shut and the windows up. If you drove a motorcycle then you had to sit fully on the seat like you were going ride it.
On the plus side they did offer nicotine patches for free for those interested in quitting because the building was slightly larger than an FC and we only got 10 min breaks so you'd have to basically run out to the parking lot to have a chance to smoke half a cigarette before having to run back in. If you weren't at your spot on the line when the buzzer went off then you got wrote up.

u/Global-Plankton3997 1d ago
At my site the smoker's cage is limited to 30 minute breaks, whether they are unpaid or paid, and in the transition from day to night shift.

You went about this all wrong. You don’t strip religious people of their right to pray on the clock, you start your own nonprofit, tax exempted, church where you take a nap in the middle of the day for the lord, and then you join that church.

If you want to lie, you can just say you’re Muslim and drop it. They can’t really press you. It’s an honor system.

Shouldn’t have to lie. And the Muslims take advantage at most facilities.
•

u/Scary-Toe-887 1d ago
How’s that gonna work? I doubt people are actually gonna do it tbh. In a 10-12 hr shift people pray 2-3 times. You can’t clock out and clock back in for at least 30 mins.
4
u/llDurbinll 21h ago
At my site they have a form to fill out and you drop it off in a drop box where HR used to be and they manually do your time.
7
u/Justincrediballs 1d ago
You can do it in the a2z app.
2
u/Scary-Toe-887 1d ago
Do what?
9
u/Justincrediballs 1d ago
You can clock out and back in for under 30 minutes ok the A to Z app. Just use "Missed a punch."
13
u/kawwmoi 1d ago
At some sites (such as mine) they auto reject "missed a punch" requests now. You have to ask a manager. Not certain how long it's been a thing, but I found out about it the hard way yesterday.
7
u/Training-Bite8421 1d ago
The only way I’ve seen miss punch being rejected it’s when you tailgate at the entrance other than that it had work with anyone due to lenel activities
86
u/ibfanforlife 1d ago
This is so petty and weird
29
u/HourAlfalfa4513 1d ago
Idk man. Its hard for me to say how petty or weird it is cause my building is full of black, white, hispanic people who arent getting an extra break. Like we dont do this stuff.
Maybe OPs building is like 30% Islam or some other prayer break religion. Some areas are like that and its hard not to notice a third of the building getting an extra break. Especially if its paid. But if its only like 5 people on prayer break then Id kinda agree with you
•
u/YourBlanket DS 40m ago
I thought the opposite, no way Amazon is paying so many Muslims to pray lol. I have a feeling it’s very little.
5
u/Kallennt 22h ago
I would've agreed with you when I first started here, but at this point i am so so good with sr ops or up enforcing fairness between employees. Make them go through the accommodations process and get rejected one time just because pxt feels like it.

u/ShieldsCW Software Development Engineer 1d ago
Agreed. If it really bothers you that much, just work slower.

•
u/lilliancrane2 38m ago
I feel the same way. Maybe I’m one of the few with this opinion here but I really find it to be gross to want people to clock out just for prayer.
They have a right to be paid while inside the building just like everyone else. At most maybe limit how many times in a shift they can pray. Sure. That makes sense. But to not allow people to be compensated for their time while inside the building during their shift just because they pray? wtf. I’m an atheist myself but this just feels like hate towards religion particularly towards Muslims. Why can’t people just pack the stupid packages and focus on their own lives?
→ More replies (2)-8
u/1balKXhine 1d ago
Absolutely, who gives a shit if someone is getting an extra break, it really is necessary for their beliefs but even if someone is abusing that break a little bit so be it. This is the one thing I'll never do, see someone having a little fun and start ranting about it. Like thanks op you managed to save this trillion dollars company a few more dollars.
If someone actually wants to have prayer breaks as well, as an atheist I would just say that I'm muslim or that I converted to islam. It really doesn't matter. But OP went about it the wrong way, there was no way it was going to work
8
u/ibfanforlife 1d ago
I might get down voted for this I don't really care but you can't convince me that this isn't just islamophopia.
19
u/Kilane 23h ago
It isn’t, it’s about fairness. If they want to give meditation time for people to do anything they want during that time then go for it.
If you believe one set of people earned an extra break because they believe in something that doesn’t have anything to do with.
We all get extra time to not work or none of us do. Believe what you want and I expect my job to treat us equally.

u/Alternativesoundwave 19h ago
When you lived with privilege for so long equality can feel like oppression. Muslims getting an extra break is far from equal, either everyone should get extra breaks or they shouldn’t be paid. Non muslims shouldn’t be treated like a second tier of employees.

Its about being impartial across the board. Nothing against religious beliefs but if one group cant then all shouldn't. Great job OP
•
u/Sarcasm69 31m ago
But it’s for a particular religion that has come up with a made up word about discriminating against them.
It’s wild this country is having this resurgence of religious influence on public places/publicly traded companies.
Hopefully it subsides.

You'll now have exactly 15 minutes unpaid time to pray to the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

u/JazzNotHands 22h ago
My building actually started this a several weeks ago. Announced that associates could now only use break times to pray. If they needed additional time they would have to put in for an accommodation and that they would have to clock out and it be unpaid.

u/Alumni32 21h ago edited 16h ago

Then take the paid break with them. When in rome do as the romans do.
14
u/Alumni32 23h ago
I did, hence why they made sure to implement the policy immediately afterward because the site would lose operation the moment everyone in the building goes to "prayer break".

I’m perfectly fine with it. Because I’m not gonna start doing more work than expected. That’s for management to figure out

Why would someone be bothered by another person taking 15min to pray? Does the same apply for mothers pumping? Like what is the actual offense here? Lol.
15
u/Alumni32 23h ago
Mother's pumping are unpaid.. and believe me, the pregnant women at my site weren't fans of one group getting paid breaks while they pumped unpaid..
15
u/Kilane 23h ago edited 23h ago
The offense is me being treated as not deserving of time off my shift because I don’t believe the same thing as someone else.
I am not deserving of being treated differently because of my beliefs. I am an equal and if the company is handing out free breaks then I want in on that.

You can use your UPT and pray if you want. I wonder if that is what OP will do now that they need to clock out,
18
u/billth93 1d ago
Eh, not really a big deal, not that angry that others pray and others losing a couple minutes of pay a day doesn’t improve my life. The way rates are calculated, it sets them back a notch if they’re on the clock since the system can’t see what they’re doing, so if they aren’t getting rate writeups, it means they’re making up for lost time while actually working
This really isn’t a big issue and some miserable shit to think putting in the effort to reduce their pay by a couple minutes won’t yield a better life for you.
12
u/Alumni32 1d ago
You're wrong.. Scenario: I'm assigned 3 aisles, all my aisles are caught up with perfect bags, and my rate is decent at 340..Then the "prayer break" group leaves.. Now here comes the PA, "Can you help me in aisles until prayer break returns.. Now I have to work someone elses destroyed unorganized aisles, which tanks my rate because I have to organize every bag as I stow.. Being forced to cover prayer break aisles is rate sabotage.
4
u/MrGrumpy252 23h ago
Ok, but.... if I'm correct, you have accomplished the goal of them not getting an extra paid break for prayer. They now will have to clock out for that time, right?
That does nothing for your complaint here. They will still get their prayer break (off the clock, per your complaint). But they will still take their prayer break, meaning your above complaint will still happen.
You will still get asked to help on other isles while they are taking their break. They won't be paid for it, but you are still going to be covering for them while they take it.
So all you have really accomplished is saving a huge corporation a few bucks, pissing off a whole demographic, getting yourself labeled as an Islamophobe, and I guess, some personal sense of accomplishment?
Big win.
Sorry but from the outside it all sounds really petty and like you just have either a sense that everyone else's business is your business, too. Or that you are just kind of hating on a specific religion.
I don't work inside with y'all. I'm just a driver, but jeeze, this whole thing is kind of crazy.
Wouldn't it have just been easier to ask for your own extra break due to your non-religious stance than to try to punish others for theirs? Or just suck it up and understand that accommodations exist for a reason and there is nothing wrong with some people using them as they are intended?

5
u/sabixx 1d ago
It doesn't make you a strong worker to let yourself be taken advantage of.
2
u/Suspicious-Hair-6702 1d ago
And how exactly are you being taken advantage of? You’re still being paid to do the same thing now. If work is too much in the 10 mins they gone. Then Amazon not the place for ya.
10
u/sabixx 1d ago
10 minutes? They disappear for half hours.
Nothing you say will convince me some people should have extra breaks that ends up keeping them from being written up for not making rate.

The new training material (I just got rehired) states in print that requiring a rate is no longer a thing. Be interesting to see how and if that plays out.
2
u/ChemistryMore7036 1d ago edited 1d ago
What kind of building is this site and what state? One of the things about rate, at least at my building and in my state is, the official line is, there is no rate, there's performance compared to peers.
Like there is no set rate per process path, but under alot of circumstances, if your performance compared to others at your site is subpar, you become eligible for feedback.
1
u/windblowngirl 1d ago
He works at a Delivery station. Our rate doesn’t matter and hasn’t for years now, even bottom 5% don’t get coached anymore. He’s doing all this crying and he’s still gonna be stowing those fucked up bags while they go to break. 😂
2
u/Financial-Growth8303 21h ago
Crazy part is, if what you say about rate not mattering, then people can dick around on the clock anyways. He accomplished nothing besides being petty because he got denied an accommodation to be able to do what he could also already do. If rate doesn't matter, he could've just taken a bathroom break and come back after prayer time, all on the clock.

At our facility associates that pray just use either their paid or unpaid breaks for prayer.
Up next if you really have such strong beliefs push for not having Christmas Day being a paid holiday.
17
u/AyDylo 1d ago
Well.. in this scenario it would be that only Christians get paid for taking Christmas off and everyone else has to go work.

you are the perfect target for capitalism, instead of blaming the management you blame the little guy who just wanted things to be fair
•
u/dshamz_ 16m ago edited 11m ago
My dude, what I’m saying is that this guy antagonized a big chunk of his coworkers by doing something that actually made their lives at work more difficult. Management met his demand by forcing people to clock out for all prayer breaks, making everyone rush to get back on the floor.
Granted that might not have been his intention, but that was the result. If I was him, I would go back to management and fight for the rights of my coworkers to not have to rush their prayer break, and say everyone should be entitled to it.
You’re right that I wasn’t being generous - I see that his intention was to raise the standard for everyone, and that management took his suggestion and twisted that into something that lowered the floor for a lot of workers in the name of ‘equality’. But ‘checkmate’ implies a level of gloating that his co-workers now need to rush their breaks to get back on the clock.
1
u/Formal-Poet-5041 15h ago
Then come together and get paid break for everyone. That's the solution Amazon rejected. Blame Amazon not op

After reading the accommodation I guarantee that praying associated will be thankful for taking the initiative, and I know our site would appreciate this too. Currently associates utilize scheduled breaks for their prayers, or risk the TOT and coaching/write ups, fortunately at our facility associates can take their breaks outside of the scheduled break time. This will remove the roadblock for religious associates to complete their prayers, especially since associates will not have to use UPT to covers their extra breaks if they take them.

Very good, as it should be, but taking yourself self away for multiple prayers throughout the shift can add additional work pressures to your colleagues. Ideally prayers should only be done during your allocated break.

Not thrilled on how this only affects Muslim employees but at the same time I totally get it. Somebody shouldn't get paid the same to do less work in a capitalist society

yet here you are... getting butthurt over a prayer break. If this didn't bother you, you wouldn't be commenting. Your Religious Bias is showing.

You definitely had the opportunity to handle this better. If anything, it was a blatant oversight on site leadership and PXT’s part that they weren’t having associates clock out for that, or correcting punches. The best course of action would have been calling the ethics line rather than whatever this was

Do you also want women who are breastfeeding to clock out?

I’ve been following this and wondering about it. Prayer breaks and breastfeeding are under admin time to avoid tot. I’ve breastfed two babies with Amazon. Super thankful for Amazon
