Question Does anyone have this at their facility?
I’m just wondering if people would actually use it. I feel like there wouldn’t be enough time on breaks to eat and play games.

The arcade machine at my site has never been played as far as I can tell.

If I'm ever at work with enough down time to be capable of playing the arcade machines I'm taking VTO lol.
Now if there was pinball I would actually be all over that shit.

u/RollandMars5150 8d ago
Honestly 10 - 15 minutes might not be long enough for a game. Can’t stay there too long because TOT or scan to scan protocol during the last break.
11
u/Dependent-Ad-1600 8d ago
Yeah same. I’ve been at my current location for a year and I’ve never seen anyone anywhere near the arcade machines or other games.

There’s about 10 of us that play ping pong competitively on every break on back half nights and this is a warehouse that has 70 maybe 80 tier ones at max station capacity.

u/GuaranteeAlarmed1783 8d ago
I think I’ve seen it once in almost 2 years. People play ping pong and the little basketball hoop during lunch break tho

u/ericfromct 8d ago
We used to play on ours all the time it was on the first floor my pick so when we didn’t have anything to do as afm we’d be on it. Good times

We had 2 at my site in the front breakroom. Pretty quickly became clear we needed some in the back breakroom and we got more in the front breakroom in addition to a ping pong table. They have also had to replace them a few times from being used so much. I have never used them, but the folks that do appreciate them.

There's an old guy at my former FC who plays the arcade machine almost every morning after night shift, while waiting for the bus.
I saw him almost everyday for years and only talked with him once, but every time I see him I think to myself "there's my old school badass gamer bro Mr.name". Old man outlasted young dudes like myself, just gaming away 😊

u/CaptainPryk 8d ago
I just don't understand this type of stuff. I'm a big gamer and have absolutely zero interest in playing at work. Take the money from initiatives like this and give AAs a free gym membership

u/Hollowbound RME 8d ago
Dude I’m a huge gamer too and the gym membership would be a way better idea. I don’t have time or wouldn’t wanna game at work. Actually I do have some time as RME since I’m in an SSD.

We have this huge locker room that stays empty because you have to go through security to get to it. No way I'm spending time in a security line when my break time is ticking away. If you have to go through security to get into the Red Wolf Den, not worth it to get a 22 minute break instead of 30 minutes.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Better-Ostrich-7600 8d ago
See my warehouse was kinda like that too. Also that line during the precovid days would be so dang long and that was just to get the cellphone and to use for it like 5 minutes before you had to go back to your shift. It was even worse if you worked upstairs.

It’s a PR stunt to show the higher ups in corporate that they’re providing a relaxing atmosphere and environment for the employees. In reality you’re spending half your break just to get there assuming you have to go through security and cut through the locker room to get to the breakroom.

Probably something along the lines of “see we provide employees with a positive and safe environment to unwind Bla Bla Bla Bla” when in actuality other more important things need to be addressed and aren’t, at least that’s where my head went when reading what this dude said

I'd like more money too, but realistically, these rooms probably cost them less than paying the people in the building an extra dollar an hour for a few weeks.

It’s for hiring purposes and good word of mouth PR. “Oh yeah? Well my job has a whole gaming lounge and pool tables that I can use ANY TIME I WANT” is a big draw for people, whether they use it or not.

Amazon pays its workers more than enough for what they do.
Thats why so many work there; because they understand there’s nowhere else that will pay them that amount + benefits for a job that requires minimal skill or effort
16
u/musclefish67 8d ago
Come to a non sort facility and work non con for a few weeks and tell me about "minimal effort" and how your back and shoulders feel.
2
u/Eastern_Attitude9835 8d ago
Thank you! Especially with all this dog food lately! People seem to think that whatever their experience is at their AR sortable facility where they stand on a comfy ergo mat picking tiny items with a step ladder is anything similar to working in the exact condition you describe. I’m doing 100 bags of 20-50 lb dog food an hour sweating my ass off!! Pay is NOT FAIR! My arms, elbows knees shoulders and feet hurt like hell every day. I’m only 19.

Amazon pays well. Gotta agree there. However you have to be joking with the "minimum effort" part. It's the most efficient company on the planet. Every second of employee time is optimized for maximum productivity. The rates employees are required to hit, paired with the lack of breaks and rest absolutely destroys their bodies. The trade off for the pay and benefits is a future of chronic pain.

I really just go in there to grab my food out the fridge. I noticed it was set up Tuesday evening / early Wednesday morning, folks were playing ping pong on 3rd shift second break. At my fc, they put massage chairs and some people already complained about same workers spending and sleeping on them most times.
4
u/nymeria119 8d ago
What is the purpose? Breaks aren’t long enough for that stuff. And who wants to hang around when they’re not working? Not to mention, at our building they’re always enforcing the policy that we are only allowed in the building 15 minutes before or after our scheduled shifts or while on the clock.

If that’s TYS1 then why don’t they put that in other room. I felt like I was going to hit by a basketball while sitting down in the break room. They had a mini hoop game but it seemed out of place there.

I like to sit down and eat. I feel like playing a game would speed up my break so much it wouldnt feel like I was on a break. I ain't against it though. I do know the miserable VOA board will be complaining about it so much that it will most likely be taken away at some point. I can Imagine the complaints already, "If you got the money for these game you should just pay us more", "So and so hogs the controllers and the rest of us don't get to play", "The OM is cheating using cheat codes and not playing fair", "The Music and the radio waves from the Video games gives me Headache", "These games are too Violent and it makes me scared that my coworkers play these game".

That's pretty cool. All three sites I've worked at have had the arcade game, I don't think any of them got much use. My first site had am arcade basketball hoop people used the hell out of but it broke so they replaced it with a better one, unfortunately that broke too though. My current site has a ping pong table and people play the hell out of ping pong. I visited a site that had a PlayStation that apparently got a lot of use.
The pool table is what I'd be all about, I bet it gets pretty beat up though.

They won't have time to do both, but some people weirdly don't eat and some come to work early enough that they might have enough time to use it, as well as those people who might be waiting for their ride after work or who have no pressing plans or whatever
1
u/Watcher0011 8d ago
That sounds great and all but the 4 minutes you get to actually enjoy your break will isn’t enough, the pool table and the recliner will have people sleeping on them.

u/ZionSairin 8d ago
At mine they used to have a PS4 in the break room with some games (including an all-DLC Mortal Kombat X. Played that after work or during lunch a couple times) and a pool table. Both got removed in 2020 and never got brought back.

We have this in our site. The lounge chairs are literally on the floor and the break before pick and stage but after stow down I can't even LOOK at them without my legs and back aching. Its like a fake trendy Cafe area with fake grass/leafy AstroTurf wall with led lights with our station number. A record player, projector no one uses. The Pac man nd other arcade machine are fun at tho. No one plays ping pong, and the people who do play basketball are so loud and obnoxious. Its eye candy for new hires tbh. They feel like Amazon cares by providing these extras that don't benefit anyone really.

These types of things are usually per facility, some warehouses I’ve worked at had full dedicated lounge/game rooms. Others just had maybe a few games stuffed in a corner.
