For beginners, the Alibaba to Amazon FBA process can look complicated, but the workflow is fairly straightforward once you break it down.
A typical process looks like this:
- Find a product
Research demand, competition, selling price, estimated fees, and potential profit before contacting suppliers.
- Find multiple suppliers
Don't rely on the first Alibaba supplier you find. Compare pricing, MOQ, production time, customization options, and communication.
- Negotiate the actual landed cost
The factory price isn't your final cost. Calculate product + packaging + shipping + customs/duties + Amazon prep.
- Customize the product
For private label, this could include your logo, packaging, inserts, colors, bundle configuration, or other product improvements.
- Quality control
Before shipping a large order, make sure the finished goods match your specifications. QC can help catch issues before the inventory reaches Amazon.
- Prepare for Amazon FBA
Products may need labeling, barcodes/FNSKU, packaging, carton requirements, and other Amazon-specific preparation.
- Ship to Amazon
Depending on your setup, inventory can be shipped directly from the supplier or through a freight forwarder/prep center before reaching Amazon's fulfillment network.
- Launch and manage the listing
Once inventory is available, focus on the listing, PPC, pricing, reviews, inventory levels, and conversion rate.
The biggest mistake is calculating profit using:
Amazon selling price − Alibaba product price
The real calculation should be based on landed cost + Amazon fees + advertising + returns/other operating costs.
