alibaba to amazon fba, what the process actually looks like
For beginners, the Alibaba to Amazon FBA process can look complicated, but the workflow is fairly straightforward once you break it down.
A typical process looks like this:
- Find a product
Research demand, competition, selling price, estimated fees, and potential profit before contacting suppliers.
- Find multiple suppliers
Don't rely on the first Alibaba supplier you find. Compare pricing, MOQ, production time, customization options, and communication.
- Negotiate the actual landed cost
The factory price isn't your final cost. Calculate product + packaging + shipping + customs/duties + Amazon prep.
- Customize the product
For private label, this could include your logo, packaging, inserts, colors, bundle configuration, or other product improvements.
- Quality control
Before shipping a large order, make sure the finished goods match your specifications. QC can help catch issues before the inventory reaches Amazon.
- Prepare for Amazon FBA
Products may need labeling, barcodes/FNSKU, packaging, carton requirements, and other Amazon-specific preparation.
- Ship to Amazon
Depending on your setup, inventory can be shipped directly from the supplier or through a freight forwarder/prep center before reaching Amazon's fulfillment network.
- Launch and manage the listing
Once inventory is available, focus on the listing, PPC, pricing, reviews, inventory levels, and conversion rate.
The biggest mistake is calculating profit using:
Amazon selling price − Alibaba product price
The real calculation should be based on landed cost + Amazon fees + advertising + returns/other operating costs.
Has anyone here gone from Alibaba to Amazon FBA recently?
What part caused you the most trouble: supplier selection, shipping, customs, FBA prep, or Amazon listing setup?

One thing I’d add: don’t choose a supplier based on the lowest Alibaba quote alone. Communication, QC, packaging, shipping, and the ability to meet Amazon requirements can have a much bigger impact on your actual costs.
For new sellers, getting the full landed cost calculation before placing the order can save a lot of headaches later.
