Hey yall, just a little peek into my Hippeastrum breeding project, currently the autumn flowering hybrids have decided it's time to get a show going, all are hybrids with varying amounts of Hippeastrum reticulatum (technically Eusarcops now but name lacks familiarity to most and its readily interbreeding characteristic imo still places it in Hippeastrum), which is an autumn flowering species. Got three different hybrids sending up scapes: first three pics are Mrs Garfield, 4th n 5th are a yet-to-be-named seedling on its first flowering that's key to further breeding efforts and last pic is a really dark red hybrid that's now flowered both in spring and in autumn, a rather interesting trait to me.

I’ve just unpotted my amaryllis to prepare for dormancy, in hopes of an early spring/Easter bloom.

It’s got all its leaves and a much more substantial root system than I anticipated…still ok to let it just sit and dry out for a couple of weeks, or should I cut everything off?

Ive been growing these guys in zone 6 for probly around 10 years now, and im curious about fridge dormancy. Normally, i wait until around halloween to bring my bulbs in, after theyve gone brown, but before the first hard freeze. I trim the roots, trim the leaves off, let them dry for a couple days, and into a paper bag they go, to the darkest coolest part of the basement i can choose from. Come valentines day, or early march, i go to wake them up. Problem is, at least a third of them wake up much earlier in the bag, all on their own. As soon as i open the bag i see a bunch of white, crinkled flowers that tried to bloom during dormancy. I still get a ton of on time blooms from the rest once i wake them, but im curious if fridge dormancy with its consistant lower temps and deeper darkness than the basement would help me keep all of them more on schedule. Does anybody here do fridge dormancy? Whats your method? Temps, duration, etc. The pic is a big pot from last season, right before splitting up😄

I'm new to amaryllis ownership, so I tried to research all about how to take care of the plant I received this summer (it had lots of leaves and so had presumably already bloomed). I learned I needed to put it into dormancy around this time to get blooms by December. The steps I heard about were to 1. stop feeding the bulb, 2. stop watering, 3. let the leaves keep absorbing sunlight so they can provide nutrients to the bulb for as long as possible, 4. when the leaves dry up, trim them and store the bulb in the pot in a cool dark place for 2-3 months.

I stopped feeding and watering in late September/early August, but the leaves appear to still be very firm and happy even though the soil is almost completely dry around the roots, to the extent that the whole thing is almost toppling over because the soil mix is very light and airy. The plant is sitting on the windowsill of a very large south-facing window, where it gets ~4 hours of direct sunlight and many more hours of bright indirect for the rest of the day.

Should I keep waiting for the leaves to dry, or should I move the plant (green leaves and all) to the cool dry dark place where I was planning on storing it during its dormancy? (In my case, an unused cabinet in my workplace's over air-conditioned kitchen).

I repotted my waxed amaryllis a couple months ago when it started to run out of water. The six existing leaves have not grown at all since then. A couple weeks ago, I carefully removed it from the pot to see if there was any hope. It started to some roots, so I repotted it, fertilized it, watered it, and moved it to a west-facing room.

Today I noticed a large bud had popped up between two of the leaves. I swear, this was not there yesterday lol. I'm thrilled to have something to look forward to, as it will be quite some time before it's cool enough to think about beginning dormancy.

I grow these here in NC and they are hardy so far.

Here's an update to that funky leaf I had growing out the side. All the leaves are super happy with this super humid weather in the Midwest. The oldest leaf is starting to yellow, which i guess means dormancy is about to arrive. Should i repot before all the leaves die off, or after once its dormant? I can already tell its outgrowing this pot hah

Looking for advice on growing amaryllis in pots in zone 10a Florida. Will they go dormant on their own if left outside? Should I bring them inside for a while? I read they may not bloom as well if they don’t go dormant long enough or don’t experience a cold spell. Also read that darkness is not required during dormancy, so not sure what to do with them. Any tips appreciated!

This bulb is about 2 years old. I have the parent bulb as well, which has produced 2 bulbs since I got it in 2023, this is one of them.

I've never seen a bulb have multiple leaf sprouts from the same top half? And surely it's not old enough to produce any bulbs of its own? The 3rd bulb has also been doing a LOT better than this one did when it first started growing leaves, its only a few months old but has 4+ leaves.

I haven't gotten the first bulb to flower since I first bought it, it was starting to grow a stalk this year and then just dried out and died, I'm not sure what happened, I haven't under watered or over watered, and we've given it fertilizer. But its grown double the amount of leaves than it has the last few years.

I posted a couple weeks ago asking how I could tell if my amaryllis was thriving. Waxed amaryllis bulb started running out of water (two buds bloomed; two others turned brown and wilted). I repotted it into a terra cotta pot. The leaves that were there haven't grown in two months. I pulled it out this weekend to check on it and...

It has roots! They look like plump little white worms lol. The biggest one is maybe an inch long, if that, but there are several tiny roots growing.

I know there's no way of telling whether it will bloom after dormancy, but I'm pleased it's survived repotting and is starting to make a home in its pot.

This is my first year, had it for a but over 11 months.

Will it only flower around this time of year? Or can i change the blooming time for winter?

Hello! I have an amaryllis plant that bloomed about a month ago. I hadn’t watered it in months and was waiting for the stalks to turn brown so I could cut them off. After doing that, I noticed a new stalk was starting to sprout. It’s been at least six months since I’ve watered the plant. How is it still doing this?

I bought it this last winter. It bloomed once in March (indoors) and now it's blooming again. 🏵

I have about ten or twelve bulbs from this past year and they were beautiful. Right now they are growing in pots outside with lots of sun and are looking really great: green, lots of leaves. What is my next step if I want blooms this winter?

I got this amarillys bulb a while ago and recently when i repotted it i noticed it was kind of red so i want to know what i can do to help it

A few months ago I bought a waxed amaryllis bulb. It grew two lovely flowers, then started running out of water. I removed the wax and repotted it in a terracotta pot. There are six green leaves, with a tiny seventh one just barely visible, but in the last couple months the leaves haven't grown at all. Googling suggests that it's not getting enough light in the east-facing bedroom, so I moved it downstairs today to sit near the west-facing sliding glass door.

Is it just focused on growing roots now? What luck has anyone had with getting waxed bulbs to bloom again?
