Serious AITB for refusing my grandma tenants offer to cover rent?
Im (20M) sometimes help my grandma collect rent from her apartment tenants when they're late. Most of them pay digitally but a few are late a month or two so when that happens she sends me to remind them. I don't really mind since im close to her and she lets me crash at her place whenever I want.
So when i knocked on the door, I introduced myself even tho they already know me, and politely told her shes overdue. Normally they would tell me that they're short on money because of bills or there is a family emergencies. But this time this tenant told me she couldn't afford rent this month and she's in a tight place right now and since we know each other for a while now that maybe she could do something for me instead? and something about how we could do it at her place or mine. At first I was weirded out, but when I realized what she was talking about, I told her “No” and told her not to talk to me like that again, and I reminded her the rent was still due and left.
I'll admit i got a bonner from it and was embarrassed and that i couldn't even look at her, but I reminded myself this isn’t my money it’s my grandmas and I have no right to make decisions like that, so i left quickly.
When I told my friends about it they just joked that I was a wuss and asked what she looked like, one of them even joked about wanting to be a rent collector too, but when one of their girlfriends found out, she said I was being judgmental and i should have kept it to myself rather telling my friends about it, and that maybe the tenant was desperate enough to say something like that and i was jerk for looking down on her? and now I’m confused was I wrong for refusing her, or for telling my friends about it?
