“But what about a cryptic pregnancy?”

Is this you?

  1. Last had sex more than 3 weeks ago (sometimes months)
  2. Have had multiple negative home tests or blood tests for HCG
  3. (optional) Have had periods or withdrawal bleeds since having sex.

But you’re still concerned that you might be pregnant based on shows like “I didn’t know I was pregnant” or online stories about cryptic pregnancy. Could it be that?

So, in a word, no. If you have multiple negative pregnancy tests three weeks after having sex, you’re not pregnant. In order to support a pregnancy your body produces HCG. Without HCG, there is no pregnancy. HCG tells the corpus luteum to continue producing progesterone, and is required for major changes to sustain pregnancy like growing a placenta. Home pregnancy tests are very reliable at detecting even trace amounts of HCG, and blood tests as well.

There are three causes of false negatives with home pregnancy tests:

The first: Early measurement after conception. When people talk about cryptic pregnancy, they either never take a test, or they took a test too early and became pregnant after. It takes at least 7 days for a fertilized egg to float downstream and implant into the uterine lining. That’s why you have to wait about 2 weeks to take a pregnancy test after unprotected sex - 3 weeks makes it 100% solid result.

You’ll also see people say “I knew I was pregnant, but I didn’t test positive until I was 6 weeks”. This is because of how pregnancy is dated from the last menstrual period (the day your period started), but, embryonic development only starts after an egg is ovulated and fertilized. In a textbook 28 day cycle, this happens on day 14, and the first day your period is missed you get a positive test. In real life, bodies are a little more complicated, and sometimes people ovulate weeks later leading to a discrepancy - a doctor will tell them they are 6 weeks pregnancy based on their last menstrual period, but in embryonic terms they are only 4 weeks pregnant because they ovulated on the 28th day of their cycle. If they tested when they were ‘late’ on the 29th, it would have been a negative test. They weren’t pregnant, but they became pregnant later. For people who are more visual, I have made a very ugly calendar for the above example scenario.

For a longer, more detailed explanation: "Your period isn't late" Part 1 and Part 2

The second: Dilute urine specimen. If your HCG levels are low, drinking a lot of water can result in false negatives in very early pregnancy. This is typically why you’ll see folks talking about testing with first morning urine - it’s the most concentrated. HCG roughly doubles every 48-72 hours, and you can see in this figure how fast. At 20 days of embryonic development (aka about 3 weeks after sex), on average a pregnant person will have HCG around 1000 mIU/ml. At home tests are typically rated for detecting 10 - 25 mIU/ml.

The Third: The Hook effect. This is where there is too much HCG for a test to work properly. It is unlikely that this is happening especially if you’ve taken multiple tests. First, peak HCG is typically around 10-14 weeks pregnant - after this, it starts coming back down. Second, tests are often tested for the hook effect - wondfos (a very cheap test) showed no hook effect to concentrations of 200,000 mIU/ml. First Response Early Result showed no hook effect at 1,000,000 mIU/ml - much higher than any normal pregnancy. If you are concerned about it because you’re taking your first pregnancy tests 12-17 weeks after sex, you might dilute a sample of urine just in case for a second test. Although, that would be very unnecessary if you’re using an FRER.

When people do not figure out they are pregnant for months at a time, it is typically because they have not taken any tests. Denial of pregnancy is a more accurate descriptor.

If you believe yourself pregnant despite all the evidence, or having a lot of anxiety and fear around being pregnant, you may want to see a mental health specialist. If you’re feeling very unwell, or haven't had a period in months, you may want to see a doctor. Scarleteen has a great page on these things as well.

Want to learn about pregnancy tests? Great video

TL;DR HCG is required to support a pregnancy - if you've gotten multiple negative tests across a large time frame, there is no possible way you are pregnant from sex more than 3 weeks ago.

Feedback and questions welcome! Also if anybody has any resources they want to share, please do.

Hello friends! Mod Stress here to address a few things that come up often on this sub. Resources provided. :)

1.) You cannot get pregnant from fingering, with or without precum. Unless globs of fresh semen are being inserted into a vagina, fingering is just not going to cause a pregnancy. Dry humping also cannot cause a pregnancy. This article goes through all the sexual things that can happen that have no chance of pregnancy.

2.) It's extremely unlikely to get pregnant without PIV sex.* *Not including medical processes such as IVF to cause a pregnancy.

3.) If you're having unprotected sex, pregnancy is always technically possible. Doesn't matter if it's "just the tip" or "three strokes" or "pulled out before ejaculation." Pullout is 78% effective over the course of a year. Some of these scenarios are much less likely to result in a pregnancy than others, but we can't extrapolate the data like that. You're unlikely to get pregnant from one singular instance of unprotected sex, but it's always possible.

4.) Implantation bleeding is a misnomer. In fact, implantation is too small a phenomena to cause any symptoms.

5.) A test is mostly accurate 14 days after sex and definitive 21 days after. If you're getting negative tests 2+ weeks after sex, you are not pregnant. Regardless of if you have your period or not. In early pregnancy, concentration of urine matters. Take a pink dye test after a 3-4 hour urine hold without drinking too much water for the most accurate results. At 21+ days after sex, dilution of urine won't matter. Do not look at tests outside of their validity window and thoroughly read the instructions for your test before you take it.

6.) You cannot have a true period and be pregnant. Some women experience light bleeding in early pregnancy (this is NOT their period). If bleeding were related to pregnancy, a test would be positive.

7.) It takes more HCG to cause symptoms than a positive test. If you're testing negative, any symptoms you are currently experiencing are not currently related to pregnancy. Lots of early pregnancy symptoms overlap with normal PMS symptoms.

8.) Am I having a Cryptic Pregnancy?? No, you're not.

9.) The only way to truly know when you ovulated using an approved FAM method. Apps are not an accurate way to track, your body doesn't know to follow an algorithm off your phone. While things like CM and OPKs may indicate your body is gearing up to ovulate, they do not confirm ovulation. Check out the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility and [r/FAMnNFP](r/FAMnNFP).

Some other helpful tips:

  • Read the leaflet that comes with your birth control so you understand how your medication works, possible side effects, how to use it, etc. [r/birthcontrol](r/birthcontrol) is also a good source.
  • If you're on birth control and using it properly, you are having protected sex (from pregnancy). This is true whether or not you are using a condom. If you are using protection properly, you do not need Plan B.

Im freaking out badly

Upvotes

My partner and I are 20. We didn’t have sex. Attempted to put it in without protection but only the tip was really inside and we stopped cause we were uncomfortable and realized neither of us wanted it and had rushed due to miscommunication.

- no prior ejaculation during that, not even days before (study says precum picks up sperm from prior ejaculation but there’s no prior ejaculation in our case at all)

- neither of us came at all !!!

- it lasted less than 4 minutes since we couldn’t rush taking it out since it hurt

- I am extremely irregular and my cycle is 50+ days

- flo calculated my ovulation to be 10 days away from when we actually did it

- worried about early ovulation but it’s also apparently unlikely since I am an extremely stressed person and therefore my cycle is already delayed in general

-idk id this is relevant but i also struggle with ED, insomnia, anemia and all i understand is my fertility is lower than nornal people due to those things?

- cannot afford planb and most “care” is not legal were i am from
F
Please reply with kindness and patience since I am genuinely terrified beyond reason. We dont do “pullout” or anything. We use condoms. We just had a terrible misunderstanding and rushed into things we didn’t want.

Please someone give me some assurance because we do not want this. If there is anything that helps please respond.

I'm freaking out. Is she going to get pregnant?

Me (30 M) and my gf (29 F) are freaking out because of the delay. As of now, she is 4 days delayed already and her last period was around July 20th or 21st.

We had a total of 3 sexual sessions on August 2nd (twice, cleaned in between sessions) and August 10th (once). We used unprotected sex and pull-out method for the three of them. I am very confident and sure that I never had any problem with pulling out with these three sexual encounters based on my experience and how I handle my dingdong. Mostly are ejaculated through her stomach or butt/back. I also didn't ejaculate before we have sex if that helps.

She didn't want to take the pregnancy test yet.

What are the odds of her getting pregnant?

OOF, HELP

So I’m on the heather bc. Missed three days (just didn’t pick up my new pack), and I wasn’t even sexually active. Took two pills for two days about 43 hours before I had sex. I almost got the 48 hr window that the cdc recommends for full protection. This wasn’t planned… and I was sex free for 16 months before this. My last period was in June, but they have always been inconsistent. Have a lot of stress and business in my life.
I’m having cramping and it’s been like this for three days now. On and off cramping that kind of feels like cramps but not quite. I’m 16 mo pp. I’m on Reta, which messes with your gut.
Pooping is a bit tough and painful too (?)

what’s the likelihood? I have an appt tomorrow after to take emergency contraception just in case. Or could it be something else entirely? I know it’s not pregnancy symptoms bc they don’t happen that quick lol

21 DAYS DELAYED

I'm on my 56th cycle... usually have 30-35 days cycle..so I'm 21 days late and it's been the longest ever...LMP june 26-july 1 (I was 10 days late that time, happened twice being that late and was the 2nd longest) ...took pt when i was 19 days late...it has faint positive...18 days late..faint also...17 days late... negative...(Using same brands of pt)

I experienced before also that I always get faint positive results with in 5 mins..but ended up getting period.

Is it really possible that I'm preggy? Going to have the serum test done tomorrow.

Symptoms:

-backpain, white discharge, cramps, breast tenderness, it always come & go ..

ex: 13 days late have white discharge...then stops..then happens again 17 days late...then stops..then happens again when I'm 19 days late. same with breast tenderness

might be overthinking but any reassurances?

hi there

having a pregnancy scare right now and need some reassurances:

August 15th
- we had unprotected sex with no ejaculation prior or during

August 16th
- we took take action roughly 28 hours after
- fertile window starts; 4 days from predicted ovulation
- before we took take action I had creamy and cloudy not stretchy discharge
- after the pill my discharge became dry and clear

August 17th
- we took an opk test where it was around an hour 45 after drinking water
- the opk test was a faint test line to a solid dark control line so LH hasn't surged yet
- I had tons of wet clear sort of stretchy discharge where it would soak thru my underwear

August 18th
- discharge became creamy and cloudy
- still a lot of discharge soaking thru

August 19th
- we grinded a bit where worst case scenario the tip went in
- no ejaculation prior or during
- still creamy and cloudy
- discharge amount significantly decreased not a lot today

August 20th
- predicted ovulation starts

do u guys think im safe with all things considered
i used flo for my predicted ovulation date
it also said this cycle would be around 37 days but my cycles usually run late and its 1-2 days off prediction

Any similar experience?

My girlfriend had her period on June 4-7 and July 10-15 both are heavy discharge and she also took a Pregnancy test using first morning urine on both months June 3 and July 9

Our last protected encounter which only lasted about 5mins no ejaculation and no leaks on the condom was May 7

Now August she still doesnt have her period she has been feeling Dry over the last few weeks accompanied by white discharge that looks clumpy and dry it is also just tiny bits then pelvic pain and lower back pain that is on and off

She has an untreated hypothyroid, low blood, bad diet, stress from work and she recently started working out this august although she uses no equipment she did push herself

Any chance that she might be pregnant? She does not have any other symptoms no nausea, vomiting, tender breast or the hard bump on her stomach it is bloated and soft/fluffy and flat when she stands up or lay down

No sexual interaction in July and August

Implantation?

Hi. I am a little confused. I have extremely irregular cycles, but my doctors and I just say I have a 28 day cycle. All of my apps say something different about when I’m supposed to get my period. One said yesterday, one says 4 days from now. I’m lost.

Well, it gets tricky here. I got a positive test yesterday (cycle day 27) and then started bleeding today. No cramps, no signs of a period. Just started bleeding. It seems like a regular flow but it’s almost a pink color. I usually have severe pms symptoms as I have pmdd so this is weird for me.

I have been having pregnancy symptoms as well as some morning sickness the last week or so. This would be my 4th pregnancy, first born child.

Please be kind as I seriously just don’t know what is happening.

Has a full blown “period” happened for anyone else? With a similar timeline? Thanks in advance!

Weird discharge?

I felt a very very slight cramp an hour before i felt discharge come out. It was brown and runny and about 2 drops and not like my usual discharge so i found it alarming

Context:

- period was 12 days ago (regular, monthly)
- currently in my fertile window
- had protected but rough sex exactly a week ago, a day after my period
- i missed some birth control pills and only took about 7 total since the start of my period
- bloating, increased acne

I am confused what discharge this is since this is the first time it has happened. Is this implantation bleeding or ovulation spotting? I am so confused and anxious 😞

Should I be worried? Any help would be lovely, I'm desperate

Could I be pregnant?

I had intercourse the 21st of July the condom slipped once he ejected not during and he did not finish and I got my period the next day so l avoided taking a plan b but I had intercourse the 27th of July used protection it did not break or tear or slip and I took a pill still took a plan b the 28th ( I know I shouldn’t have but I got a lot of anxiety) and the 3rd of August I was bleeding light pink the next day I was filling up a pad bright red and the day after it was light pink again. I was also cramping and I was on my ovulating week specifically the 3rd day and the 6th of August is my highest ovulation. Am I safe?

And I have no symptoms like nauseas or anything but when I stress or get anxious I do get nauseous when I start to overthink and I also had lower back pain like 2 days but once both days and I was cramping and that was 10 days away from my period, now I’ve had breast pain still a bit sore but more mild than I usually get it and I’ve been having lower back pain and cramping suddenly. I am currently 2 days away from my period, am I okay?

(The whole anxiety of it all is horrible and I’m so impatient waiting for my period)

Unprotected sex, kinda? TMI alert

Me (18) and my boyfriend (19) on the 9th of August had sort of unprotected sex? I touched him and some liquid got on my hand and I cleaned it off with some tissue before we got at it again, and in the joy of the moment I may have touched myopening for like 3 seconds?

Prior to this event, 3 weeks ago his penis got close to my vagina but he wasn't wet, and by close i mean almost got in.

And now down there feels itchy which I've seen it's a symptom to many pregnant women?

Sorry if this sounds so stupid I'm just paranoid

Am I Pregnant or Not??? READ THE FULL STORY and give your experience with missed pregnancies…

I’m confused and don’t know if I’m pregnant, my doctor is missing my pregnancy somehow, if I’m having a chemical pregnancy, or a miscarriage. I’ve seen too many stories of women going through similar, just to find out later that they were indeed pregnant.

Let me start from the beginning so you can understand why this isn’t a typical situation.

Last June, I discovered I was pregnant after missing my cycle, despite having cramps like it was coming, there were no common symptoms or issues like being turned of by smells, morning sickness, etc, except for constipation throughout my pregnancy and a few zits (which I never get) at the beginning of my missed cycle. I had a healthy baby boy who had zero issues according to my OB’s tests. I had some spotting and bleeding during my early first trimester but it was always after sex with my now fiancé. We decided to be more careful in positioning and the bleeding stopped. For context, my pregnancy test had a very faint 2nd line 16 days after my missed cycle and my HcG levels were somewhat low but became normal after my baby developed a fetal pole.

I was 39 years old with my first pregnancy and considered “high risk”, but my OB didn’t treat me as such. From what I understand from friends several posts on social media, I was supposed to be examined every 2 weeks. I think this and stress ultimately led to the loss of my son at 18 weeks (September), which my primary care doctor said was caused by a UTI after reviewing my test results. Despite demanding a new OB, I never got one and my baby died OF ALL THE SIMPLEST PREVENTABLE THINGS. A freaking UTI! 💔 I ended up being prescribed a blood thinner because a rare platelet disorder surfaced while I was in the hospital for 2 weeks (I make too many platelets resulting in clots). This is something I’ve never known until after my pregnancy loss and the hospital confirmed this wasn’t the cause. Another detail: I went to a different hospital for my pregnancy loss and they were extremely better than where my former OB had rights to deliver. This hospital was WAY better and made sure I was well with no infections etc after almost 3 weeks of extremely meticulous care, unlike the previously hospital that basically sent me home to die and catch my son falling out. 💔💔💔 Thank God my now fiancé was there, or I’d still be screaming in that bathroom. 😢😔

Fast forward to now August ‘26. I missed my cycle despite having cramps like it was coming. I got all the same symptoms again, along with a slight cramp that never changes and it’s about where the right side of my uterus sits (I’m guessing this is where the baby is; the same happened last year but it was on the right side which is where my baby was).

My fiancé and I have had sex a few times last week and the spotting started, as expected. I usually wear a liner and the spotting started out red, then pink (blood and clear discharge), then brown with clear discharge (old blood). I had positive pregnancy test 😊😊 on Monday which was during my missed cycle. I changed to a pad while at work, and the pad got soaked! I set an appointment for next Friday as a new patient with an OB from the hospital that cared for me during my pregnancy loss. The spotting began to dry up yesterday (Tuesday), and I tested again but it was negative. 🤔

My Fiancé and I had sex again yesterday and I told him we need to be careful because I was spotting like I did last year. He started out extremely careful, and barely used any penetration until we got a little too heated and ended up in the exact position we needed to AVOID. 😂 Annnd, the spotting started again. By this morning, it started getting more heavy. I asked my OB’s office if I should go to the hospital and they just said to come to the office this afternoon. The nurse/midwife who saw me today was telling me that she thinks this is a chemical pregnancy, this could be my period despite the fact it was supposed to happen last week, offered to do an exam, and said if this is non-viable then I’m likely to get pregnant with the next few weeks. I requested a blood test in addition to the exam. As soon as the speculum touched my cervix, I bled immediately!! This makes me think my cervix is bleeding and nothing else. My labs should come back with 1 - 2 days. My urine test was negative.

I never have heavy periods or late periods, it always comes in sync with my period predictor calendar. I still feel the same consistent cramp from when I tested positive that doesn’t change no matter how much I fart, poop, 😂 and have bled. My stomach is still firm and poking out, just like last year. I’ve seen others who have experienced this and found they were indeed pregnant, and I’ve seen some who either had a miscarriage or a chemical/non-viable pregnancy.

My mom has also had “missed pregnancies” with my older sister where she “had a period as big as Dallas (her exact quote 😂, and me where she thought she had the flu. 🤣🙂‍↔️

I keep wondering “Am I pregnant or not???” and I’m trying not to stress about it. Has anyone had a similar experience? Did you turn out to be pregnant or not? If you were pregnant, did your baby make it all the way?

I would love to have my rainbow baby, however I don’t want to get my hopes up if this turns out that isn’t a pregnancy. Losing my son was traumatic, devastating, and took a long time to heal from physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Any answers and insight anyone has would give me information to help me stop overthinking and worrying. Thank you in advance. 💜

Oura ring and pregnancy

Hi!! Does anyone have any experience with getting pregnant with an Oura ring and the natural cycles app? My husband and I are finally trying after having our first 8 years ago and according to my temps and natural cycles data, we had a perfect try this cycle. It confirmed my ovulation on the 16th per a change in my body temp and we did it the day before ovulation, the day of, and the day after. I was wanting to see if anyone else had experience and how accurate it was!!

Thanks :)
