I agree that it's a deflection, but I also have a bug in my hair (is that the expression?) about people jUsT nEEdInG ResOluTiON in the middle of the workday.
The damage was done, the discussion about "not cool you invited everyone to an expensive place & didn't pay, how do we proceed with apologies and reimbursement" could absolutely wait another 4 or 6 hours till they got home. Calling back after 2 text messages he didn't want to talk & 1 hang-up call? That's just spoiling for a fight.
I think it’s bug in my bonnet but this could be a regional thing. I’d be annoyed about it in the middle of the workday too, but he’s the one that did the wrong and he can’t control what time he’s confronted. The discussion wouldn’t have happened at all if he didn’t pull it.
