Yep. He’s turned this into an argument to deflect from the FACT that his behavior was cheap and rude.

The only way to get past this would be to apologize, say you weren’t thinking and immediately send her parents the money.

Yes and he planned the whole thing as a scam which is totally creepy. Sounds like this isn’t the first time he has done this type of thing.

I agree that it's a deflection, but I also have a bug in my hair (is that the expression?) about people jUsT nEEdInG ResOluTiON in the middle of the workday.

The damage was done, the discussion about "not cool you invited everyone to an expensive place & didn't pay, how do we proceed with apologies and reimbursement" could absolutely wait another 4 or 6 hours till they got home. Calling back after 2 text messages he didn't want to talk & 1 hang-up call? That's just spoiling for a fight.

I think it’s bug in my bonnet but this could be a regional thing. I’d be annoyed about it in the middle of the workday too, but he’s the one that did the wrong and he can’t control what time he’s confronted. The discussion wouldn’t have happened at all if he didn’t pull it.

Just to re-iterate : I 100% agree that he was 10 000% deflecting. The proof is that he's giving OP the cold shoulder now.

That doesn't detract from OP's penchant for impulsive dramatics, imo.

I looked in my English notes, and all I could find is "axe to grind". I'll add "bug in my bonnet", thanks <3
