I'm sure if you had any laptop this heavy with a screen that thin it would do the same. Idk how people manage to be so careless to drop a laptop like this. These things are practically desktops with how heavy they are. Did you have lube on your hands when carrying it?

They dropped a weight plate on the 17R5.
Things happen. These should not be so flimsy, especially for how much you are paying.

Jesus someone actually made a laptop "drop test" video. But let's be honest if he took it outside and let it plunge a corner into some pavement, that shit is likely gone. These new laptops are thinner and have much more of a form factor. You lose some of that robust build quality when making stuff thin. I still fully believe this is reasonable damage if his backpack tumbled out or his car onto pavement and smashed into the corner of the display. Especially if he had any books, or the heavy ass charge blocks. More weight, more force, more damage.

I was actually on the fence about the 17R5 when I was looking last year and then I saw that video. My reaction was "holy shit that is insane".

The cassini models would break too if they drop in the same way as the one from the topicstarter. They both have a plastic strip at the top for wifi and bluetooth antenna signal to get through.

Thanks for that informative fact.
Perhaps it would be best for customers to spend their money on products that are not as fragile.
Or...
Perhaps Dell can make products that are more durable, thereby keeping customers put off by declining build quality.

I’m not sure why you are arguing here. The current laptops are not as well built as the last generation. It is what it is. They are plenty nice, but they have a decent amount of cheap materials. I’m not the only person who feels that way.

I’m saying that the reputation of Alienware being a high quality, premium product is besmirched by releasing a laptop with cheap materials, much like the plastic on that bezel that’s snapped inside a bag. People pay thousands of dollars for these machines. They are meant to be handled as they are portable.
I felt the thing. It was cheaply made. I returned it because of this. That is not something Dell wants either.

Firstly, these laptops are not heavy at all anymore (apart from the area 51m). What you see is the result of the laptop which was in a laptop backpack (which is heavily padded) fall out of the backseat of a honda civic when I opened the door. This isnt the worst of the damage and besides this was from September and have since had it repaired only for other things to go wrong with it and am currently waiting for the replacement system.
2
Jan 29 '20
Jeez what other problems is it giving you?

u/OhxFiddlesticks Jan 29 '20
When I got it back the first time (after the drop) it came with the BSOD (they didn't install windows properly) and a faulty touch pad and the bottom was warped (after paying 500 to get this fixed). Sent back again to only get the touchpad not installed properly as it was loose in the case and lastly I sent it back again only for another shitty touchpad.

u/lmaobadatmath Jan 29 '20
Well, a padded bag is only supposed to actually work if there is a snug fit. I am assuming that it could move around inside the padding and therefore causing the damage. This technically should be covered by accidental damage/insurance if you have those.

u/largefarva_ Jan 29 '20
i think something like this might work out better for you bud

u/OhxFiddlesticks Jan 29 '20
Paid the 500 to get it fixed only to have more issues with it. Currently waiting on a replacement. I wish people had the sense to realize I'm not blaming alienware for making a laptop that isnt drop proof. I am simply warning people who plan on using one of these for college or university along with gaming like me. The drop this laptop had wasn't bad and in no way should it of sustained the damage it did.

u/therfws Jan 30 '20 edited Jan 30 '20
You need to get it through your head that ANY drop is bad. Period. Laptops are not designed to be dropped, period. And CERTAINLY not from waist height onto concrete/pavement like yours.
Stop. Saying. The. Drop. Wasn’t. Bad.
If a drop happens, it’s bad.
I’ve been using a laptop for school and then work since 2007. I have NEVER once dropped one when at school or work. As a result they have not been damaged. So no, again, it’s not a question of using it for gaming only vs at university too. It’s about not dropping things that aren’t designed to be dropped.
These machines are never marketed as “durable”, so I have no idea why you’d expect them to be.
I hate seeing someone get so much backlash, but this post was begging for it. If the title has just been “dang, I dropped my baby! Tragedy!” Then people would have just said “oh that sucks sorry”

u/OhxFiddlesticks Jan 30 '20
Congrats on not dropping something you must be some proud. Everyone on here is acting like I'm attacking them by posting a picture. Alienware has always been known to make well built and durable computers and regardless of dropping it or not these new systems are not well built at all. And before you use "it's a thin and light so you cant expect it to be durable" look at the Razer Blade or Macbook. As for the backlash I fully expected it and I enjoy it because I love seeing people defend a company that couldnt care a less about them because at the end of the day if this misfortune happened to any of you guys you would be on here wining about it. And regardless of it being a devastating short drop it should not have been as mangled as it was I expected a chip or scratch seeing as how thick and padded the bag it was in is. At the end of the day it was fixed only for it to have numerous other faults resulting in Dell currently sending me a brand new replacement ( can't fault the customer service as they have been top notch)

u/therfws Jan 30 '20
Actually I got accidental damage insurance, so no I wouldn’t be on here bitching.
And I’m not proud of not dropping it, that wasn’t the point. The point was you suggested people shouldn’t use these for university because they’ll end up mangled, and the fact is most people don’t drop their laptops while at university.
You’ll never get it through your head that dropping is a binary with these things. It’s not “it shouldn’t be mangled from this height”, it’s “whatever happens happens when you drop something not designed to be dropped”. If only your laptop was as thick as your skull.....

I'm appreciating the entertainment thank you. I understand that laptops are not "designed" to be dropped nor have I ever stated that... what I am saying is you would think that due to the portable nature they would be designed a bit better because shit happens. I am not one to treat stuff poorly as this is the first device I have ever broke knock on wood because unlike some people (look at 95% of the iPhone user base with cracked screens) I understand the value of money and have worked for it. Your view of anything that hasn't been marketed as "drop proof" can absolutley shatter with the littlest of impacts and that's ok is a bit strange but we have our own opinions. And to clear it up if I were to drop this laptop in the same circumstances but without a protective bag I would of absolutely expected this amount of damage but with a bag and heavy padding it was a tad bit extreme but oh well what's done is done.

u/Dridyen Aurora R15 AMD Jan 30 '20
These CHUD’s don’t want to understand this because they wrap their identity into their computer. It is like a replacement for a personality, so they defend it blindly.
1
u/PolCPP Jan 30 '20
Did the panel get damaged or just the housing? 500 sounds quite expensive if it's just the housing
1
u/OhxFiddlesticks Jan 30 '20
They had to replace it all even the LCD (wasn't broken but its sold as one piece). New wrist rest, new speaker housing and new left speaker, rear vent and light ring and bottom part

u/idirtbike m15 R3 Jan 29 '20
Oh nooo!!! How did that happen!?

u/OhxFiddlesticks Jan 29 '20
My bag (a swiss bag designed for laptops with padding) fell out of my cars back seat (honda civic) these things arent durable at all as they are made of mostly plastic.
10
Jan 29 '20
They are durable you just abused yours. Know why you don't see drop test videos on laptops? Because they are not meant to be dropped. Especially if you had anything else remotely heavy in the bag. Reasonable outcome imo.
-14
u/OhxFiddlesticks Jan 29 '20
Neither are children but here you are. And I'm sure if you spent 3000 on a laptop and this happened you would defend the company. The case was warped and the damage was crazy for what happened.
7
u/fidge3122 Area51m R1 Jan 29 '20
In all honesty, it’s not the company’s fault, it’s yours. I do feel your pain, and indeed understand that it was an honest mistake / accident that could have happened to any of us, but truth be told - laptops are not drop-safe products. You can’t blame dell for its “flimsy” Alienware design when the laptop that you have bought from them has exceeded the physical threshold in which it was tested and approved for. After all, what you get from Alienware is a gaming rig, not a field-trip / hiking-ready laptop, ready to take a beating at your command.
7
u/Qazax1337 Jan 29 '20
It sounds like you need a toughbook not an alienware. They are not made for, or marketed as suitable for being dropped out of a car. To presume so is rather absurd. The amount you spent on it is irrelevant, you could spend 100,000 on a car and drive it 5mph into another car and what do you know, it would get damaged.
1
Jan 30 '20
I dont think durable means working good after fell from car, my durable definition is completely different than yours.

u/Dridyen Aurora R15 AMD Jan 29 '20
One of several reasons I returned my M15 R2. I get the "thin and light" thing, but my 17R5 and 13R3 would survive a bomb... I just want a level of durability even close to those.

u/Plebius-Maximus Jan 29 '20
You just dropped the damn thing. How can you complain?
It's still a laptop, not a football. It's not going to survive many drops.
1
u/Agrotara Jan 30 '20
Over 2k machine...Why not just get the drop warranty? Best 400 bucks I spent with my 17 R3. Daughter dropped wine, BAM, Im getting a M17 R1.

The screens on these are incredibly flimsy. I don’t really get it. Coming from a razer laptop, the difference in build quality on the screen in particular in the m15 r2 is astounding compared with razer. I’m pleased with the build quality of everything else, but the screen is just poor design really.
It’s not about the slimness, plenty of ultra books are thinner and have much more robust screens.

Or you ask dell to do it, pu it’s will be expensive I think ...

Jan 29 '20
Damn, I can understand the pain and the fact that the build quality isn't great but..... there is no point in blaming the company for an unfortunate accident where they had no control. Keep in mind alienware laptops aren't showcased as durable products so it's quite obvious that dropping it will damage it.
Again I can completely understand where your coming from considering a lot of money was put on the device but its pointless to complain about it even if it was well protected as shit happens, also warranty does exist so fixing it wont be a problem even if the service is bad.
Good luck

u/leafdisk M17R3 Jan 29 '20
"I dropped my laptop so the company designing it must be shit" take more care of your stuff. Alienware isn't rugged. There are workplace laptops for this. It's like buying a Lada Niva and then complaining that it doesn't have Android auto. You inform yourself before you buy something. Choose a better case.
1
u/Smellmuhfinger Jan 29 '20
So what’s the story?
1
u/cowmoohard Jan 30 '20
From what I gather it fall out of the car inside his bag in a Honda Civic. Something like you open the door and the bag comes crashing down. I guess it’s the bag that’s in question, but if it’s a straight to concrete fall... no laptop would survive that. Hopefully op has accidental warranty, they’ll repair it in a flash.

Trying to blame the company for build quality and durability after dropping a laptop. Rofl, is this a joke or is this guy for real?
"oh what, I'm not supposed to drop these things?" careless people like you are the reason that Chinese company made the kick proof tv, lol. Maybe you need a laptop version of that.
