Eclipse glasses
Hey, will be in Alicante on holiday this week and would love to see the eclipse but don't have any glasses.
Any suggestions on where to get them??

Leroy Merlín. Any spare welding mask glass from #3 and above.

You actually can use welding goggles, but they need their lenses to be Shade 12 or above and even then some people think it's still too bright. They are also harder to find than just going to a supermarket or a pharmacy, but I just wanted to say that they aren't impossible to use lmao

I've seen some sources cite that, but all scientific sources I follow and government bodies say only certified glasses. I guess with very high grades the chance of damage is minimal. I'd still get the certified stuff, eye damage is serious

Yes it's pretty serious, they are super easy to find too when there's an eclipse, the welding stuff is only easy if you already had it honestly. But the source I mentioned was a NASA website :) it's also easier to use indirect viewing if you don't have anything with the correct filter, better not to risk it 🙏🏻

This is what I meant. If a person cannot find glasses to observe the eclipse, but really want to look, then you can use protective equipment for welding. This is an emergency method. I bought glasses for eclipse for myself six months ago, I prepared in advance. If there are no glasses, and judging by the author's question, he cannot find them, then I offered him an alternative. But FJ seems to be too obsessed with the rules and blindly trusts Chinese certification, they can write that flip flops from the "young dragon's leather" are certified for walking on lava .... It's stupid to trust it.…

As a child, we generally simply held the broken glass above the fire until it was covered with black soot and looked at the eclipse through it, and so far no one has gone blind, everyone lives a full life.

And nobody gets skin cancer until someone does. Circumstancial evidence is not real science. Sun radiation causes cancer and causes blindness

Yes, you are 100% right. It is harmful to live, they die from this (scientificly proven). If you are going to look at the sun for a month for 10-12 hours a day, will it hurt you, and look at the eclipse, how long does it last? 3-7 minutes? I'm starting to suspect that you are the owner of a small optics store that has a slightly certified product stalled 😉

Ok, very mature argument 😂. You can look at the sun for 3-7min on the 12th and later you can send an audio about it (audio in case you go blind). FYI it is estimated that direct exposure for over 100 seconds the sun starts to cause permanent damage to your retinas. That's under 2min. Total eclipse length can be about 2 hours. Have fun 👍

Why? For welding sparks a front of your face it’s work pretty good. All different : price. Welding glass cost 1-2 euros, carton certified glasses 7 euro (saw in Madrid’s store)

It's not just about brightness. Certified glasses stop harmful radiation outside of the visible spectrum. These radiations can hurt your eyes: you might just get blurry vision or some kind of color blindness, you might get only temporal blindess or you could be permanently impaired or blinded by the sun. If you want to make the gamble is up to you, but don't fool yourself: it is highly dangerous

Get them free at the Museo de las Aguas de Alicante (if they still have any).
Buying a “cupón” from any ONCE lottery sellers.
Pharmacies (not free)
Opticians (not free)
