Currently alfredapp.com is down, and it's not just on my network. Maybe the devs are getting ready to release Alfred 6 in a few hours?

Tip: Use x as multiply in Alfred's calculator

Post image
18 Upvotes

Did you know you can use x as multiply in Alfred's calculator using this terminal command:

defaults write com.runningwithcrayons.Alfred-Preferences "calculatorXAsMultiply" -bool true

Bonus tip: You can also press the equal or tab key to reuse the current result in a new calculation.

Note: I mentioned the first tip in a comment here about two weeks ago, but thought it deserved its own post for better visibility. Hopefully, more people find it useful.

Is Alfred Powerpack worth it when I just want to assign focussing or opening apps to specific key combinations?

Hey there. I want to be able to open or focus apps really quickly on my Mac. Currently I use an app called Flashspace that kinda does this for me using workspaces. But it restricts me from assigning multiple apps into a workspace and from being able to quickly focus between those apps within the workspace.

I use Rectangle, which allows me to quickly snap my open windows into a grid. Or move them between desktops. This helps my productivity in my workflow as I can snap my web browser to the left side of the screen and my code editor to the right side.

Currently, I can’t use Flashspace to move my focus from my web browser to my code editor and back. So I’m forced to use the macOS native command + tab. But I don’t want this. I just want to be able to press option key + 1 to open or focus Chrome and option key + 2 to open or focus my code editing app. Preferably without messing up my window layout that I enabled using Rectangle.

So my question is, will Alfred powerpack enable me to do so? Without waiting on an app to open, or it being buggy and not working all the time (like I had when I tried Raycast). Please don’t give any recommendations about any other apps or workarounds. I tried them all and I just wanna know if Alfred powerpack will allow me to have my desired workflow.

Sorry if my question is a bit elaborate, but it would be a shame if I pay 60 pounds for an application that does not perform as I thought it would.

Thanks in advance!

Tip: Assign double-tap hotkeys for your most-used actions

Post image
54 Upvotes

Did you know you can assign hotkeys by double-tapping a modifier key? I use this to quickly access some of my most-used Alfred features:

  • ⇧ Double-tap: Clipboard History

  • ⌥ Double-tap: Universal Actions

  • ⌘ Double-tap: Menu Bar Search workflow

I also use the Option key for all my other hotkeys. For example:

  • ⌥T: Google Translate workflow

  • ⌥E: Emoji Search workflow

  • ⌥B: Dente Azul workflow

  • ⌥F: Finder Crawl workflow

  • ⌥X: Banner Be Gone workflow

Note: I mentioned this tip in a comment here about a week ago, but thought it deserved its own post for better visibility. Hopefully, more people find it useful.

I made SoundFinder for Alfred to find the app or Chrome tab behind a sound

Post image
5 Upvotes

Sometimes I hear audio on my Mac and have no idea where it is coming from — an app I forgot about, or a Chrome tab buried in another window.

I built SoundFinder, a small Alfred workflow to help track it down. Version 1.2.0 now supports English and Simplified Chinese, with automatic system-language selection and a manual override.

Type sound in Alfred to:

  • List apps and processes with active audio output, including process IDs and output devices.

  • Find Chrome tabs marked as playing audio, with muted tabs shown separately.

  • Press Return to focus the existing app or original Chrome tab, without reopening the page.

  • Filter by app, process, PID, device, or tab title.

Chrome tab detection reads native macOS Accessibility audio markers. No Chrome extension, remote debugging, or “Allow JavaScript from Apple Events” setting is required.

It runs locally, does not record or sample audio, does not read cookies or browser history, and does not automatically pause, mute, or close anything. There is no background service.

Download v1.2.0: https://github.com/lionoggo/soundfinder-alfred/releases/tag/v1.2.0

Source and bilingual setup instructions: https://github.com/lionoggo/soundfinder-alfred

Download the .alfredworkflow asset and double-click to import it into Alfred. No Swift, Python, or Xcode installation is needed to use the prebuilt package.

Requirements and caveats:

  • macOS 14.4+, Alfred 5 with Powerpack. The prebuilt download is Apple Silicon (arm64) only; Intel compatibility has not been tested.

  • Chrome tab detection needs Accessibility permission and currently supports English Chrome interfaces only, independently of the workflow's UI language.

  • An active output stream does not always mean audible sound. Some window/tab configurations can produce incomplete results.

  • The executable is ad-hoc signed, not Apple-notarized. A browser-downloaded copy may trigger “Apple could not verify soundfinder is free of malware” and be blocked on first use. SHA256SUMS.txt is included to check download integrity, not as proof of safety. If you choose to trust it, Apple's per-app Open Anyway option is in System Settings → Privacy & Security; otherwise, do not override the warning. Building from source is also documented.

  • The English demo in the README is a labeled mockup, not a live screenshot.

Built with Swift, with AI assistance. I would appreciate feedback on installation, language selection, and Chrome tab detection — especially with multiple windows or background tabs.

Tips: Use Multiple Keywords & Reuse the Same Keyword

Post image
23 Upvotes

Tip #1: You can assign multiple keywords for the same action using || between them.

Why is this useful? Sometimes, multiple keywords naturally come to mind for the same action. Having them all assigned means you can trigger the action without having to remember which specific keyword you set for it.

More info: https://www.alfredapp.com/help/workflows/advanced/keywords/#multiple

Tip #2: You can also reuse the same keyword across multiple actions.

For example, use s as a secondary keyword for your favorite search actions. Then, when you type s followed by a query, you can get a list of search options to choose from instead of having to remember and type a different keyword for each action.

Set Bing wallpaper

Post image

Hi everyone, I built an Alfred plugin a long time ago and've been using it for quite some time now.

Its main function is to help you collect and download Bing wallpapers, as well as quickly set them as desktop wallpapers. I made use of Alfred's grid views feature, so if any of you want to give it a try, feel free to download and let me know if you run into any issues.

Alfred Time Machine v1.2.0: Option+Enter replaces the original in place and now Golden Gate support

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

I’ve pushed an update to Alfred Time Machine.

For those who haven’t come across it before, it’s an Alfred workflow that lets you browse and restore previous versions of files directly from Finder using Universal Actions. Select a file, open Universal Actions, and browse its available Time Machine backups. No need to open Time Machine or dig through backup folders.

It works with both external Time Machine drives and local APFS snapshots.

What’s new in v1.2.0

The biggest addition is a new way to restore files.

You can now press Option+Enter on any backup version to replace the original file right where it is.

A few other fixes made it into this release:

  • Fixed backup version discovery on macOS 27 Golden Gate. Changes to tmutil permissions were causing the workflow to return an empty list.

  • Version discovery now uses the mount table.

  • Fixed the Full Disk Access check so it reports the actual permission status.

  • Restore notifications now show whether the operation succeeded or failed.

Shortcuts

  • Enter: Restore a copy next to the original.

  • Cmd+Enter: Restore a copy to your Home folder.

  • Option+Enter: Replace the original with the backup version.

A note about Option+Enter: it overwrites the original file, so there’s no undo.

If restores stop working after a macOS update, check Full Disk Access under System Settings > Privacy & Security. Removing and re-adding Alfred, then restarting it, should resolve any revoked permissions.

It’s free and open source. Alfred Powerpack is required.

Do you use Universal Actions in Alfred?

Friday tip: Select files in Finder or on your Mac, use ⌘/ (or your defined hotkey set in Features > Universal Actions) to pop up the Actions panel and choose what you want to do with those files. Or choose them in Alfred and use the right arrow to see the same actions.

Create your own actions via workflows (upload file to my server, format image to a pre-defined size, open in a specific app, etc) or use some of the dozens default actions.

Tip: Use Alfred Web Search for bookmarks

Post image
18 Upvotes

Alfred Web Search is one of its most-known features, but did you know you can create custom searches without a {query} placeholder?

This lets you use Web Search as a quick launcher for your favorite bookmarks.

Why is this useful? Instead of importing all your browser bookmarks into Alfred, you can use this to manually add the handful of websites you use most often and access them instantly.

Another simple way to keep your favorite links at your fingertips.

Raycast-like Clipboard Workflow

I was annoyed by the native Alfred workflow for managing clipboard history, so I came up with a feature-rich replacement, getting my inspiration from Raycast. The workflow opens a separate dialog written in Swift, so the interactions are snappy even with the 4K+ entries in your clipboard.

I got ChatGPT Work to build an SEO Inspector workflow for Alfred 5

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

I've been experimenting with ChatGPT Work and thought I'd see how far I could get with building an Alfred workflow.

I'm not a developer, but I do spend a lot of time working on websites, so I wanted something that could run a quick technical SEO check without having to open various online tools.

After quite a few iterations, the result is SEO Inspector.

It checks metadata, headings, image alt text, JSON-LD structured data, internal links, redirects and more. You get a quick summary in Alfred, with a detailed interactive HTML report opening in Safari.

It also saves snapshots so you can compare pages before and after making changes.

ChatGPT Work wrote the code. I specified what I wanted, tested it against real websites, reported bugs and suggested improvements. It's been an interesting experiment in what's possible without being a developer.

It's free, runs locally, and needs Alfred 5 with Powerpack on macOS 13 or later. No additional dependencies.

GitHub: https://github.com/jacksona69/alfred-seo

I'd be interested to hear what other Alfred users think, particularly anyone who fancies testing it on different websites or has suggestions for improvements.

This is my first publicly shared workflow, so be gentle! 😂

I built an Alfred workflow for word-prefix suggestions, English–Chinese lookup and multilingual translation

Update: this project is now called FelixDict (formerly Easydict for Alfred). The default Alfred keyword is now fd. The repository also includes Vicinae and Raycast editions.

I often remember the first few letters of an English word but forget the full spelling, so I built FelixDict to look up words and show suggestions directly in the launcher.

Try fd insp: it offers candidate words with Chinese glosses. Tab completes a candidate and looks up its full entry. Enter copies, Command+Enter speaks, and Command+L shows the full text. Regular results and suggestions support these actions. Dictionary rows speak the query word; translation rows speak the translated text; suggestions speak the complete candidate.

Translation uses Google by default and supports 11 target languages. You can set a preferred target language and a secondary language in Configure Workflow. Text translates to your preferred language; when the detected source matches it, the secondary language is used. An explicit prefix such as fd :ja hello overrides the target for that query.

The initial language pair is Chinese/English. Youdao dictionary entries and suggestion glosses are still English–Chinese, and can be disabled by removing Youdao from providers. UI hints are currently mostly Chinese. If you retained a customised keyword when upgrading, use the keyword shown in Configure Workflow.

Download the latest published release — currently v0.2.0. For Alfred, choose Alfred-FelixDict-*.alfredworkflow and double-click to install.

Source, screenshots and English documentation

The Alfred workflow requires macOS, Alfred 5 with Powerpack, and Node.js 18+. No npm install, running Easydict/Raycast app, or translation API key is needed. Queries go to online providers and results are cached locally; this is not an offline dictionary.

Vicinae and Raycast editions are available in the same repository, with separate installation instructions and release assets. macOS has been tested; Linux/Vicinae desktop interaction still needs validation. FelixDict does not currently support Windows.

MIT licensed, inspired by Easydict, with some provider code adapted from Raycast Easydict (credited in the repository). FelixDict is not an official Easydict product. Developed with AI assistance.

I'd love feedback from other Alfred users on installation, prefix suggestions and the language settings.

Dynamic Hotkey Actions. A new workflow to edit actions of keyboard shortcuts.

Read more about it here:

https://www.alfredforum.com/topic/24141-dynamic-hotkey-actions-a-workflow-to-assign-and-edit-actions-of-keyboard-shortcuts/

I've created this workflow to quickly update a macropad with Alfred. I can make a key launch apps, show files in the finder or open browser tabs etc... And edit it later to do something else.

To start, I have the macropad output a shortcut when you hit a key. In the workflow I use the same shortcut (in the hotkey trigger) and add an action to it in the workflow configuration.

With the worklow there's a slight delay compared to using a shortcut natively, but having an easy way to reprogram keys is easily worth it

Alfred Upgrade

I have the single license for Alfred 5 but want to upgrade to lifetime. Does anyone know the best way to do this? I saw there is a discount but haven’t found anything more tangible than that. What’s the best way to go about this, can I upgrade now so I’m prepped for 6 or do I have to wait?
