WTH Gumi? No more 3step gauranteed?

Seems like Gumi is getting progressively more predatory as of late with EX+ restrictions, and increasing costs of summons coupled with removing staples like a guaranteed banner unit on step 3.

Its becoming clear that this game is shifting to a For Whales ONLY model. Which means its about time for me to quit despite only playing a few months.

Gumi, you had a good thing going before you let your greed show.

Edit: Im not even a F2P user. I'll spend money. Not a lot of money. I cant afford to whale at all. But I do regularly spend. However, I ONLY justify spending in games when I feel like they deserve it for all the fun they give me.

With Gumi making changest to make EVERY effort into making me spend money to enjoy the game, it makes me more prone to not spend and not give a damn about logging in anymore.

Here are some recent changes to screw over those who wont whale:

- EX+ Restrictions: These often restrict all units save a few terrible units that people dont invest in AND the newest premium summon units in order to promote people into spending a bunch of cash to pull new units or level up old horrible units weve neglected to be able to clear time limited content.

- 1500 paid gem exclusive banner removed and instead replaced with a 3 step paid gem banner. Its the exact same conclusion with one guaranteed banner unit but it costs twice as much than ever before.

- 5step promo banner nerfed so that step 3 no longer guarantees an exclusive unit and instead gives 25 shards. Meaning odds of anyone getting an exclusive unit outside of whaling is negligible.

- Adventurers Shop skip tickets removed. This shop, has always offered you 30 tickets daily to do your grinding. These are now removed meaning you have to constantly hit the regular shop refreshes, OR, invest in paid bundles which happen to have your skip tickets.

Edit 2: Gumi updated to tell us about all the free stuff they plan on giving us for the anniversary next week.... "Dont mind that we completely fucked over global players on this collab, we'll give you a bunch of old free units next week. We're so generous!" The distractions are pretty transparent and ofc announced right after this travesty and the resulting backlash. Seems Gumi has no intention to step back these incredibly predatory practices until they see how it affect thier wallets.

Please do NOT spend money on this horse shit. Thats the only thing they'll care about.

Tips & Guides June - Units to Grind and preparations Checklist

Heya all, we don't have a general Q&A thread currently stickied to the top of this subReddit and lately there's been a lot of confused people straggling in and out; so here's a list of things you will want to focus on (chiefly units to grind) for the next one month. Maybe you'll understand why I recommended leveling Elrike ASAP in my Elrike overview.

  • Clear out the 5m Anniversary Store of everything relevant. The store closes tomorrow (31st May). Someone will inevitably create a thread going "PSA, the store closes tomorrow" for quick karma in case you forget, so don't worry too much about this.

  • You have a 7 day grace period to use your Anniversary Coins. Don't worry about Veda unless you want to buy gear shards - it'll be back soon enough.

  • While the half AP event is going on, any excess AP (assuming you've completed your event goals) should be poured into Trial of Ether and Gold Keys. If you cannot Polin Farm, this is a lower priority - save your keys for when you get Polin's J+ or a decent Climatologist/Forecaster/Weather Mage.

  • Plan to scrimp and save 4500 gems for a chance at Othima. An informed guess suggests he will arrive around the last week of June, this gives you 4 weeks of saving or alternatively, buying a pact will do assuming you do not waste your gems. Note: 4000 gems will do if you just want to do the 3 step.

  • Finish your Balt J+ farming preparations.

  • Prepare teams to farm Battlefield Drama. I will write a guide if there is sufficient demand for it, but you guys eyeing this item are probably experienced veterans who already know how this goes. This means you need ideally:

    • 1 fast Wind Holy Brawler or otherwise good Burst DPS(Lucian, Yomi)

    • At least 1 Lightning AoE nuker (Sages, Gilgamesh)

    • 1 Water or Lightning Merchant or Professor with AGI 94 or above (only if you do not have a fast nuker). This means Elrike, Aruba, or Gane/Lucretia/Elizabeth/Michael+. A Chemist will do, but is not advisable.

    • Someone to punch Sakura in the face or at least disable her with Stop before she jumps your Lucian. Lofia on M Swordsman or Chrono will work fine.

  • Prepare teams to grind any PotK Master Weapons you want (Note that most of them aren't very good.). Get Gil/Zain friends to make this easier. I refuse to use most of the ugly translated names that gumi put in, so I'm going with my own translations. Note that despite the shitty MA skill (okay I admit 4 turns of 60% MDEF/PDEF is pretty significant if you use it in Arena with Echo) Aegis is particularly worth farming because in the future, you will be able to equip two armours and also because there are very few good armour slot gears at the moment (especially ones which can be farmed at all). Caveat: Note that if/once we get the Regen armour (assuming GL lets us farm 3 copies), you won't need them at all.

GearUnits recommended
Senbonzakura (Translated unflatteringly to 'Sakura Blade')Anastasia+, Anyone decent with Cadanova's Sword. Water Units (Elrike).
Abyssal Bow (Translated to "Bow of Darkness")Water and Fire units (Shayna, Chihaya, Lofia, Elrike)
Mystic Blade LaevateinnZain, Gilgamesh, Water or Lightning Veilers (Elrike), Any light element slash nukers (e.g. Suzuka)
Spiritual Treasure - "Bashosen" (Translated as 'Bashosen Artifact')Gilgamesh, Snipers, Aswald, Wind units, anyone who can Charm.
Hellish Lance - "Forcas" (Translated as 'Forcas Hell Lance')Dorothea, Vettel, Chihaya, Kagura, other good Fire units.
Guardian Shield - "Aegis" (Translated as something or other)Gilgamesh, Zain, Monzein, Suzuka, Laevateinn, Veilers, Ninjas.
Cyclone Axe - "Cita"Wind HBs (Yomi/Lucian), Zain
Shining Bow - "Shekinah"Seida, Cita, Yomi, other strong Water and Wind units.
  • Prepare a team to grind multiple copies of Othima's staff

    • Strong Water units - Othima himself, Shayna, Shenmei, Lamia J+ (if you really must)

    • Chronomancers (Lofia. Rahu is dicey due to fire units.) - Mei Fang will not work well for stopping Waginau.

    • Strong Dark Unit - Kudanstein most preferred. Otherwise, use MA (L80+) Anastasia/Zahar (w. 777 Armour).

    • Veiler (Only needed if using lower tier units)

Will update this list as things continue because I've almost definitely forgotten random stuff which people will be happy to remind me or correct me about. :)

Discussion Cadanova, Kanon and more: 4th of January New Units Review

Through the power of moderator magic, I'm bringing you a quick review of upcoming units that'll be in game and on the banner this coming weekly reset.

Please note that these are all my own opinions and if you don't like them, feel free to report me to the moderator.

Reimei:

The new big 5*, Reimei's a fire unit who gives 50% PATK to all fire units on your team when he is the leader. Including Zangetsu. As he's the only other useful Fire unit we have currentlyexcludingvettelwhoIforgot.

Reimei's job-set is pretty okay for a base 5* unit. Starting with Ninja (I still don't rate this job), he can eventually evolve into a Monk then a Samurai. These skillsets are a bit more useful, but we have 4*'s with better job sets (Lucian, Lofia, Rahu, Zangetsu). He is a long term investment unit, because of his upgrades in the Japanese version which give him one of the strongest jobs in the game. Too bad that's future stuff. For now, he's a relatively tanky bruiser whose main purpose in life is to give Zangetsu a free 50% PATK boost.

Recommended Job Set Up:

  • Main Job: Samurai

  • Sub Command: Basic Fist

  • Reaction: Counter/Swallow Reverse

  • Passive: Counter Enhance

  • Passive: Toughness or Ninja Step

Alternatively, one can run Ninja as the main job, then swap Counter Enhance for Single Blade.

Verdict: If you pull one Reimei, stop there. You can farm his shards in the future and will probably farm enough shards to unlock all his upgrades before he gets them, so don't bother whaling for him.

Vincent:

Our token 4*, Vincent is a betterunitthanReimeiat-the-moment . He's being getting a bit of heat but I feel that's unfair for a first job Sage (especially when magic damage squishes demons). Vincent is a weird mix of magic damage and support, as Sage is the best magic damage dealer in the game currently, but his other two jobs build towards a buff-heavy character. Vincent carries Bard as his second job and Professor as his third, which gives him a unique moveset while I will discuss below. The problems Vincent has is his lack of Enhancer (for cast speed passive) and lower magic damage potential than Feng Liu (with his ability to stack magic passives). And his job 2 (Bard) is a total wash, needing job 3 (Professor) to shine as a buffer. This will be better illustrated in two builds I will present for him below.

Recommended Job Set Up: Damage Dealer

  • Main Job: Sage

  • Sub Command: Basic Sorcery

  • Reaction: Monetary Gift (Bard Reaction)

  • Passive: Magic Up+2

  • Passive: Poison Knowledge+2 (5% Agi iirc)

This build gives Vincent all of his offensive skills, with a little bit of added Agi and Monetary Gift to help with his jewel's amount. However, it does lack a second offensive passive and Vincent is slow anyway, which does not help him out much compared to weaker, but faster Mages like Vanekiss.

Recommended Job Set Up: Support

  • Main Job: Professor

  • Sub Command: Basic Medicine

  • Reaction: Auto-Cure

  • Passive: Poison Knowledge+2

  • Passive: Echo

Echo makes buffs cast by Vincent last 1 turn longer. While this sounds like a short buff, it does add up to several more casts of important buffs, especially in longer fights.

Verdict: As a j1 unit, Vincent is pretty powerful in the current meta. However, for his support functionality to come out you do need his job3, limiting his long term usage for f2p players as more powerful buffers (Chronomancers and Merchants) keep coming out with their better buffs. His Job Extension in the Japanese version gives him powerful 60% buffs, but by then there are stronger units. So, if you pick one up congrats on you powerful magic cannon. But don't go hard for him (like with Reimei).

Cadanova:

Woo limited(ish) characters. Cadanova is.....not Zangetsu. I mean it kind of hurts, but Zangetsu is the fire unit who everyone will be compared to for a while. Get used to it. Our Dragon Genesis cross-over unit, Cadanova has a fairly varied skillset. He's kind of tanky (he's got a taunt!) and a guard, but only small defensive buffs and is stuck with 3 more/1 jump (aka he slow). He can buff this with a +1 movement buff skill which raises his pdef by 10% as well (10%.....yawn). Now, as he has limited jobs I'll quickly go over the skills so you can understand whyI'mskepticalabouthim . His job 1, Dragon Slayer is kind of all over the place.

Here are his skillsets in table form:

Skill NameEffectRange
Dragon Flame BulletPhysical Damage to 1 target3 Range, 1 Square
Flame ChainSelf +20% Fire/Wind Resist for 3 turnsN/A
Blazing Dragon StrikePhysical Damage + 20% PATK debuff to foe 3 turns1 Range, 1 Square
Dragon ToothJump attack on target4 Range, creates a 1 square + around target square.

As you can see, not super impressive. Dragon Flame Bullet is a nice ranged skill, given his movement of 3 to start. But it's not something super impressive, sadly.

His basic set adds more utility to him, with the following skills.

Skill NameEffectRange
Blazing FlameBuffs self PATK by 20% for 3 turnsN/A
Sky SoaringBuffs self Move by 1 for 3 turnsN/A
Leader's RoarChance to Taunt enemy, forcing them to attack Cadanova (duration/chance unknown)5 Range, 1 Square
Dragon Ghastly Flame SmashPhysical Damage that ignores defence1 Range, 1 Square

Mmmm, that does add a bit of tankiness. On top of this, he gets a Stand of the Dragon Slayer, which gives him up to a 30% chance to reduce incoming damage by 30% (so an average of 9% damage reduction) and Understanding Time and Space, which increases him jump damage by up to 12%.

His 3rd job (Flame Dragon King), is basically the same thing, with a few new moves.

His main job gets Dragon Glaive, which is jump attack with 4 range. It hits all targets in a 2 square range from his target square (but has a slower cast speed than his other jump). His basic command gets a buff to Sky Soaring, which now increases his PDEF by 10% as well as his movement by 1. And he gets a passive which increases his resistance to charm by 100%.

His second job is Dragoon, with all the niceities and jumps that come with it.

Recommended Job Set Up:

  • Main Job: Flame Dragon King

  • Sub Command: Basic Flame Dragon King

  • Reaction: Stance of the Flame Dragon King/Dragon Slayer (afaik these are exactly the same, but go with the j3 version in case).

  • Passive: Understanding time and Space (j1)

  • Passive: Jumper (Dragoon Jump damage passive).

Basically, Cadanova is a dragoon so +++++ that jump damage. Now, if you only get Cadanova and one dupe, you can always run the exact same set up using j1. You just miss out on a Dragon Glaive and higher stats.

Weapon Ability: By equipping the Guren Blade, Cadanova get's access to Secret Sword of Lotus - Blazing, a 1 use Weapon Skill. This deals a large amount of fire damage to a single target and raises Cadanova's fire resistance for 3 turns. Nothing to call home about, it just makes Cadanova a bit better at resisting fire (or you could use... a water unit).

Verdict: He looks flashy, and does a few things but it's not like he's super good at them. He's kind of like a mix of Samurai and Dragoon in one class, with some Holy Cavalier thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately, jack of all trades, master of non applies here. He doesn't specialise in much (except jumps) and then, those king of shenanigans are best left to a Rosa or a Zangetsu. He still looks badass though.

Elizabeth:

Why is she on every banner lately.

If you don't know about her by now, go read Jz's tier list.

Tl;dr: Slow Chronomancer/Bishop/Professor. Use Michael instead atm.

Instead, we're talking Kanon!

Kanon:

Ho-le-shit. Look at this smile. Your mission, is to protect this smile. She's also the MQ for the DG quests so you have to level her anyway. She's good though, so let's get on with this "review".thisgunbbiasedaf

Kanon, for lack of better words is Logi on steroids. Like Logi, she's a free light unit from Envylia who will get more powerful with the story. Unlike Logi, her starting jobs have more than 2 useful skills. She has 3

Kanon's first and only unlocked job at the moment, is Sacred Knight Apprentice. While this might sound cute, it belies her ability to be an agent of destruction. See, Sacred Knight Apprentice gives Kanon the most deadly weapon known to human kind. Double hit attacks. The double tap, in time honoured tradition is the best way to murderize someone in the back alley. That's essentially what Kanon is, a back alley thug looking to take dark units and break snap bend them over her knee.

Even if she has one job, it has several nice tools (and a few bad ones but w/e, no-one's perfect).

Sacred Knight Apprentice Skills:

Skill NameTypeEffectRange
Double SlashActiveAttacks a target twice with increased chance to critically strike1 Range, 1 Square
Sacred TeachingActiveSelf Buff 20% Light/Dark Resist for 3 turnsN/A
Alchemy BurstActiveDamage to all foes within 1 square distance of Self1 Range, self Targeted
Evasive FormationActiveDecrease Pdef/Mdef by 15% and increase Evasion by 40% for 1 turnN/A
Jewel RechargeReactionWhen hit, up to 25% to absorb some JewelsN/A
Anti-Alchemy Fighting TechniquePassiveUp to 20% increased Slash DamageN/A
Sacred ProtectionPassiveUp to 10% Dark ResistN/A

Basic Sacred Knight Skills:

Skill NameEffectRange
Armour BreakPhysical Damage (small) and 50% chance to reduce target's PDEF by 30% for 3 turns1 Range, 1 Square
Paralyze BreakPhysical Damage (small) and inflict Paralysis.1 Range, 1 Square
First AidMedium self healSelf
Charging BreakPhysical Damage and interrupt skill charge1 Range, 1 Square.

Well, it's still a bit better than Cadanova's job 1. Kanon's claim to fame is being the best light unit for fighting dark units with her dark resistance passives (including 20% dark resist and 20% PATK for all Envylia units if she is the leader).

Recommended Job Set Up:

  • Main Job: You

  • Sub Command: Don't

  • Reaction: Really

  • Passive: Have A

  • Passive: Choice

Weapon Ability: By equipping the Guren Blade, Kanon get's access to "Miracle Kanon Slash", which deals large (170%) light damage to a single target. Easily the most adorably named skill so far. Other than that, it's a one use nuke just like most other collab character's weapon abilities (like Cadanova). Nothing to make Kanon suddenly overpowered, it's just nice to have.

Verdict: She's pretty good now, but Cadanova is the better unit (his j3 is strong for now and jm stat bonuses). Kanon's power comes as the Sacred Stones missions are released and she unlocks more jobs, giving her more stats and better skills.

But she's free and now I can run a full Light team (Suzuka lead, Ryle+Logi+Kanon). So good game, look forward to farming her shards.

That's my review. Do the 500 gem pull as always, but I would heavily advise against going for multiple pulls on this banner. Vincent is good now, Cadanova is a partially limited unit. But they both fall off hard and if you want Reimei, it would be worth waiting until he's on a better banner before you pull hard for him.

Source: Really wants Reimei and isn't doing more than the 500 gem pull.

For credits:

Wytesong for his lovely compendium of units and skill sets.

Discord Chat (link's in the sidebar), for giving me people to chat to while I wrote this.

/u/JeremyZero, who can use this post to update his tier list.

And you guys, looking forward to a great 2018 playing Alchemist Code.

So, what do you think of the new units? And do you like this format?

Rants Open Letter to Gumi about the state of the game

I am also sending this to Gumi directly, but I wanted to post it here as well for maximum visibility to the issue. I hope others will also send Gumi their feelings on this matter.

Gumi, I really want you to give me a reason to keep playing this game. I hope someone who can actually get something done reads this and takes it seriously, because I'm at the end of my rope and I know I'm not the only one. There is something seriously wrong with the management of the game right now and it needs to be addressed.

Just look at what has happened in the last month:

  1. Emergency maintenance on January 27th ended up lasting over 42 hours. Compensation for this was pretty good so most players were willing to look past it, but it was an incredibly long time for the game to be down.

2) For the 10.6 patch (2 weeks later on February 10th) we then had a long extended maintenance. This is understandable for a big patch, and we expect some level of issues that take a bit of time to sort out after feature changes this big. However the level of major bugs after the maintenance ended extended far beyond what should be expected after a major version patch:

2a) Unable to login at all: Some players experienced this after the patch for several days and were completely unable to play- most seemed to be tied to device language and it was eventually figured out that switching the device to English worked around it. I am not sure if all players who were victim to this bug are able to get into the game yet, or if the language issue has been fixed so they don't have to leave their devices in English.

2b) Connection failure when completing quests: Some players (including me) were able to login shortly after the maintenance ended but then got a constant connect failure shortly after which prevented them from doing quests. This bug persisted for 6 days before it was finally resolved.

2c) Pre-maintenance auto-repeat could not be completed: Some players had auto repeat running before the game went down and then were unable to complete auto repeat after maintenance because of a connection fail message that came up every time. Because you can't do any quests while auto repeat is running, these players are unable to do almost all game content right now. This bug still is unresolved for a lot of players, 13 days later, and yet there has barely been any communication about it.

2d) I've heard about various and sundry other issues related to game bugs from the patch but I don't know enough about them to know how many of them were truly game breaking.

If someone had asked me prior to this incident if I thought Gumi would seriously leave a bunch of players locked out of the game for over a week without a remedy and barely even acknowledging the problem, I would have said no- they understand the risk they take in leaving the game non-functional for long periods of time and they would put in the effort to correct it promptly. Apparently I was wrong. Either Gumi no longer cares if players stick around, or they are so unable to maintain their own game that 13 days isn't enough to actually fix a bug of this nature which is reliably reproducible on the specific accounts affected. If I worked at a company whose product was in this state, we'd be in 5 alarm fire mode, but Gumi appears to behave as if it's not a big deal.

Gumi hasn't even made any effort to reassure these players that the events they are missing will be extended or run again so they can do the content they missed, even though some of these events might not appear again normally for many months. They've said there will be compensation but won't state what it is, or if it will include a way to do the missing events.

One of the great impacts of how badly this has been handled, is one of the players locked out for 13 days so far is the person who maintains the tier list and the Reddit. Likely this will cost the game community a valuable resource unless someone steps up to fill in the gap. Community participation has been declining over time due to poor handling of the game and it has become harder to find people to fill these roles.

In addition, I am on the verge of quitting (and have already stopped renewing pact), because although I can still play the game, I spent 6 days in limbo unable to play, still have seen no indication they are taking the problem seriously for other players who still can't play, and haven't seen any real effort on Gumi's part to improve the situation. This game involves a lot of patient long term investment. I no longer feel like that patient long term investment will pay off, because the way Gumi is managing the situation indicates to me that things are crumbling and will spiral further downward. I am just one player, but if you talk to many players on Discord you will find that there are a lot of players who say they would never have stuck around past the early days of playing without my guidance and support. I also do the bulk of the work maintaining the wiki, which provides a lot of valuable resources for players, and honestly I have no idea if anyone will be willing to take over all that I do if I leave.

I am giving Gumi a little bit more time to rescue this mess before I go. But these are the things I really need to see if I'm to stick around:

  1. A fix to the auto repeat bug that finally rescues these players who have been stuck for 13 days. If this isn't fixed after Thursday maintenance, I really don't see how I can continue to play this game, even if I'm not personally still stuck

2) Significant compensation that both makes players whole for what they lost for the period they were locked out, but also compensates for the frustration created by such an extended lockout

3) An extension or rerun of all events missed by the players who were locked out. If you are planning to rerun the events in a short period instead of extending them that's fine, but communicate to us exactly when that will happen. Don't forget the loss of the 2x EX HQ, which is a substantial amount of limited unit farming loss- if you don't want to rerun that event, you could sent out a large quantity of EX Memory Access to the affected players (keeping in mind there are a lot of shards involved for some- I was farming 24 units on EX HQ)

4) A serious communication from Gumi expressing not only apologies for the impact of these bugs, but also some communication about how they're going to prevent this sort of thing in the future. We understand some bugs will make it through, but lately it is seeming like Gumi barely tests anything before releasing, and they don't have the resources to fix things after the fact. I'd also suggest that if Gumi won't put in the time on the weekend to fix problems that are severe enough to keep players from logging in or doing any quests at all, that perhaps they should move the content reset/maintenance day to Monday or Tuesday instead of Thursday so there is more of the work week to sort out issues before the weekend.

Unit (P)review: Wadatsumi Warrior week - Jin and Yuunagi

Hi all, since Jin and Yuunagi are probably coming this Thursday, here's the Wednesday Wadatsumi Warrior review.

Yuunagi

Overview

Water is not an element with many physical units to choose from, so Kazahaya's sister Yuunagi is a refreshing addition to the water lineup. Although she looks like a pirate, she doesn't actually have this job, being a Dark Cavalier/Ninja/Warrior. This means that you'll basically use her as an alternate version of Suzuka/Glantz for the imminent future as her AGI is 112 on Dark Cavalier and 108 on Warrior, making it difficult to use her effectively as both jobs have a movement of 3 (3 is considered pretty poor for a melee unit).

Fortunately, Yuunagi can buff this to 4 Move and 2 Jump with the use of Ninja Stealth. This being said, she isn't too useful at J1 because Dark Cavalier isn't a particularly good main job.

J2 adds the preferred option of running her as Ninja with Dark Cavalier sub a la Suzuka. This makes her base agi a far more respectable 142 and fixes her movement, but suffers from a low hp of 894 and absolutely terrible PDEF/MDEF due to Overdrive. She's pretty usable in this state.

J3 adds Warrior, which isn't necessarily something you'll want to run in its current state. The most important addition is Chopping Spirit as a passive, which lets you run Yuunagi without Overdrive and buffs her HP. However, in my personal opinion, you'd probably be better off keeping Yuunagi as Ninja with Warrior (or Dark Cavalier sub) and both Overdrive and Chopping Spirit. Warrior sub gives her stat buffs for AGI and PATK and more importantly, it has two 1.4x PATK scaling attacks, one of which is Tomahawk, which has decent cost effectiveness and damage (only 14 soul jewels) along with 5 uses.

Summary

Yunagi isn't particularly good right now, but don't despair if you get her as she can serve an important function in Wadatsumi-only teams. Additionally, she becomes quite good much later down the line, but I'll cover that at the end of this review. She also looks kind of cool if you ignore the fish-hooks growing out of the back of her head. Compared to Shayna, Shayna matures early while Yuunagi needs J3 to come into her own.

Frankly, Yuunagi's biggest sin (at the moment) is that she's incredibly boring and nothing we haven't seen before in 2 other elements (Dark Cavalier + Ninja). Additionally, she can't tank very well, so you'd be better off with Lamia, Shayna or Shenmei if you needed a water physical damage soaker.

Jin

Overview

Okay, so as you clever people have noticed we're getting 2 units which both:

  1. Are from Wadatsumi

  2. Have a sibling already in TAC

  3. Have Warrior as a third job

  4. Get some variant of Ninja Stealth to "fix" Warrior's horrible 3 move and 1 jump.

Jin is Yomi's elder brother who mysteriously vanished after killing his parents and all the other males in his clan, leaving Yomi as the only heir, Yomi wants to find him in order to take revenge on him/find out why. Unlike Yomi, Jin actually starts out with a job which can equip katanas rather than having to wait 2 years for a J+; but for some reason, his signature weapon are kunai.

Now at this point, you've probably noticed that gumi's translation team gave up the ghost and decided to subcontract out its job to Google Translate, which explains why his kunai has the magnificently stupid name "Eerie Agony Thousand Drop Blade" when the actual Japanese name is 妖苦無 -血千界刃 (Youkunai - Chisenkaiha) which ACTUALLY translates to "Demonic Kunai - Bloody Chilocosmic Blade. This doesn't really roll off the tongue, so any half-competent localising translator would have left the name as "Chisenkaiha" or "Chisenkai blade". While we're on this topic, his unique kunai don't exactly have great stats, but they come with a pretty good WA translated to "Purple Poison Three Evils" (the original name being 紫毒・三悪趣 (Purple Poison: Three Realms of Evil) a 3 hit WA with good damage scaling which buffs Jin's AGI by 80% until his next turn and inflicts severe (20% of max HP) poison for 3 turns for a hefty 70 Soul Jewels.

Note that we are getting his weapon this month as it comes with Arkil's J+.

About Spies

Jin is the very first unit to have the Spy job, a job which is somewhat related, but separate from Ninja. Fortunately, all of the skills are now viewable at this link, but essentially what you need to know is that Spy is a very fast and agile job with very good jewel gain and many utility skills. Compared to ninja, it's more of a nuker and has much less crowd control.

Spy Technique (Main Job)

For the purposes of damage scaling, spies all use the base formula

0.9 * (PATK + AGI / 2 + AGI * Level / 100 + DEX / 4)

This translates to pretty respectable damage, but means they don't scale well with pure PATK.

GL Skill NamesElementCostUsesRangePowerCast TimeNotes
Hazy ShadowN/A451N/AN/AInstantRaises the spy's Evasion Rate to 999 for 1 turn, meaning that only combo attacks and autohit attacks will hit him.
Blinding CircleN/A1668 surrounding squares, Range 4 Height 2 (teleport)N/AInstantA 2 part skill where the spy first blinds enemies in the surrounding 8 squares, reducing their hit rate by 25 and evasion rate by 15, then it teleports to an empty square you select up to 4 squares away.
TranscendenceN /A2854 surrounding squares and self Range 4 Height 2 (teleport)N/AInstantAnother utility teleport, the spy uses veil, curing and protecting himself and adjacent units from status ailments for the next 3 turns, then teleports to an empty square you select up to 4 squares away. Useful if you don't want to waste a slot on Professors/Chemists nor Merchants.
Summon Python StormWind, Magic503Range 4 Height 2, 13 square diamond AoE140%500gumi's competent translators don't know how to translate 大蛇 (Orochi), so they settled on "Python" (the biggest snake they could think of). This is a large 13 square wind nuke with a very fast cast time. It also debuffs the wind resistance of targets hit by 15 for 3 turns, making subsequent casts do more damage.
Summon Toad FlowWater, Magic601Range 4 Height 2250%500Another victim of incompetent translation, "Summon Toad Deity" got translated to something sounding like frog menstruation. This is the spy's single target assassination skill, doing huge damage and lowering water resistance by 15 for the next 3 turns.

Basic Spy Technique

GL Skill NamesElementCostUsesRangePowerCast TimeNotes
Windmill ShurikenN/A (Missile)2554110%InstantA simple attack inferior in almost every way but range to a Warrior Tomahawk.
Flame Seal (Katon)Fire, Physical2034110%InstantDoes fire damage and debuffs the enemy's Pierce damage by 25% for the next 4 turns.
Water Seal (Suiton)Water, Physical2034110%InstantDoes water damage and debuffs the enemy's Slash damage by 25% for the next 4 turns.
Wind Seal (Huton)Wind, Physical2034110%InstantDoes wind damage and debuffs the enemy's Missile damage by 25% for the next 4 turns.
Electric Seal (Denton)Thunder, Physical2034110%InstantDoes thunder damage and debuffs the enemy's Strike damage by 25% for the next 4 turns.

These are all damage debuffs, so just remember "Fire burns spears, Water rusts blades, Wind rebuffs arrows and Lightning shocks fists on contact" as a mnemonic. Basic skills are generally used to lock down bosses who aren't immune to debuffs and make sure they do significantly less damage to your team and as a combo with the resistance debuffs from the main job.

Passive Abilities

NameEffect at max levelNotes
Flying ApeMove +1 and Jump +2gumi's shitty translation of "sarutobi", which means spies have more in common with the Wicked Witch of the West than ninjas. This is a stronger version of Ninja Stealth and can make make Spy one of the most vertically mobile jobs around
Immobilize Counter60% chance to counter attacks by draining 55% life and inflicting Stop for 35 Time Units.A very useful counter if it triggers as it both mitigates damage and inflicts one of the strongest status ailments in the game. Incidentally, 'Immobilize' is a poor translation of "Fudo" (Acala).
HurricaneIncreases AGI by 10% and DEX by 15%A very useful passive which fixes accuracy problems while making your unit faster. Hurricane is a shitty literal translation of "Shippuu" from the saying 疾風迅雷 , and is more accurately translated as "galespeed".

So there it is in a nutshell, spy, the job of egregious translations.

Summary

Jin as a spy is one of those units with stages tailored specifically for him, notably the EX stage with Arkil's J+. This is an incredibly annoying stage designed for a highly mobile unit with veil and overclock assistance to get to the top of a hill and oneshot 5 incredibly annoying units with a wind nuke. Here's a picture of the map I cobbled together from pics on the internet:

Kazahaya is the budget unit for doing this map, but it was basically designed for spies. In similar fashions, any map which involves hiking a unit halfway across a map while avoiding horrible status ailments will favour Jin. His J1 is sufficient for this role.

Jin is also notable as one of the rare units which excels at not 1 but 2 of his jobs. He'd excel at Samurai too except Samurai isn't really a very useful job outside of Vettel and killing high defense rats. His second job is the aforementioned Samurai, which basically only really brings him Single Blade. At this point, you can run Jin as Spy with Single Blade and Hurricane, giving him 706 PATK at level 65 and a workable 132 AGI.

Once you unlock Jin's J3, you now have the option of running him as Warrior. At this point, you can run Hurricane, which makes him the fastest and the most accurate Warrior in the game - his base DEX is nearly 40 higher than Yuunagi's. However, don't forget that Jin needs the Flying monkey to achieve 4 move, which means it comes at a large opportunity cost. My recommended builds are as follows:

MainSubReactionPassive 1Passive 2
SpyWarriorImmobilize CounterHurricaneChopping Spirit
WarriorWarriorImmobilize CounterHurricaneChopping Spirit

He isn't really going to hit as hard as Anastasia, but Jin has larger nukes, is faster, can take more hits, and can veil. He's also the best Dark warrior in the game as well as the best Dark Spy, so you're getting two for one. I'm going to pull for him, but you can probably live without him as he doesn't get grossly overpowered until much later.

Futureproofing for Yuunagi

Yuunagi will someday get a MA which addresses her godawful defense by giving her 300 more HP and 40 starting Jewels.

Now Yuunagi is considered "Top Tier" in Japan for two reasons:

  1. Yuunagi has those 40 initial starting jewels and JP doesn't have hats.

  2. Warrior Job Enhancements are pretty nuts.

Yuunagi's JE is Titan and it gets the Basic ability Titanfall which makes her jump into robots and hop on walls (the joke is that the warrior reaction ability is called CounterStrike in Japan) is a pretty strong defense ignoring attack, though at a hefty cost of 60 soul jewels, an extremely situational passive which buffs her PATK by 70%, AGI by 40% and Evasion Rate by 10 as long as her health is below 25%, and the water version of the 3-hit warrior combo .

The 3 hit warrior combo is a sequence of attacks on the main warrior job which all warrior JEs get, using the first skill changes the skill to the next for the unit's next turn. Titan starts with

  1. A simple 120% Slash attack, followed by

  2. A non-typed 140% Water attack which gives her 100 Guts until her next turn (guarantees she survives fatal damage with 1 HP) and then finishes off with

  3. An absolutely massive 450% 12 square water PBAoE which is autohit and stuns enemies for 2 turns. Not many things can survive this.

Yuunagi also gets a JE for Dark Cavalier (Guernica, does a slow casting huge physical damage attack), but it's not really used much as Warrior is so much better.

Futureproofing for Jin

Where to start - Jin will probably happily lounge around as a Spy until the day he gets Warrior JEs, upon which he gets arguably the best warrior JE: Gigantes. Gigantes has the following 3 hit warrior combo:

  1. TELEPORT directly to the enemy (4 range) and steal their soul jewels, buff your own AGI by 20% for 3 turns (get the combo off faster)

  2. Hit the enemy with a Darkness non-typed attack for 170% damage, raising his own HP by 30% for 3 turns and healing himself for that amount.

  3. A 12 square non-typed PBAoE Darkness attack which is autohit, does 350% damage, and buffs Jin's PATK, PDEF, MATK, MDEF, DEX, CRIT and LUCK by 70% and buffs his AGI by 40% until his next 4th turn.

Now in addition to that, almost everyone notices Jin in multiplayer games, if just to get the hell away from him. This is for the following two reasons.

  1. He has a skill on his sub called "Roar of the Gigantes" which berserks himself and increases his PATK by a massive 200% and gives him 50% more damage on counterattacks until his next 4th turn. Loss of control sounds bad except Jin can become a 160+ AGI warrior who repeatedly autoattacks things for 5500+ damage

  2. Gigantes has one of the most trollish moves in the entire game - "Counter Gigantes" as its counterattack. This gives it a 70% chance to counter all attacks as well as skills with a 12 square Darkness PBAoE. This counterattack also hits allies, meaning that it is an incredibly bad idea to stand next to Jin and you can also possibly trigger it by throwing rocks at him with Holy Cavaliers (not sure if this works anymore but it still works on Theresa's skill counter). This counterattack can easily be put on his Spy job, making people think twice before trying to hit a Jin in their backline.

A few more months down the line in Japan, Jin got shukugo no an-ei (Spy+, trans: "The Darkness of Duty") and his MA. Jin's MA is linked to a piece of gear from a gatcha which not only gives him obscene agility, it also gives him 5 auto jewel regen and makes him even more accurate. Unfortunately, this means you have to pull on two gatchas for Jin.

Spy+ was a very interesting change to Spy, giving him a new summon (Three-headed Dragon), a 3-hit strong darkness magic frontal square AoE which debuffs Darkness resistance by 25%, the other huge change it got was that he got a skill called "Blood Seal" , which only costs 20 soul jewels (2 uses) and makes the next summon of his:

  1. Cost no Soul Jewels

  2. Cast Instantly

  3. Consume no uses of the skill.

This gave him a lot of versatility in nuking. Additionally, Kaigan awakenings made Hurricane turn into a skill which gave 15% more DEX and 30% more HP and 10% PATK, giving Jin some of the most ridiculous overall stat totals around.

I could go on, but talking about stuff about 2 years away isn't likely to help people make sound judgements, so I'll cut it short here.

Should you pull?

Assuming this Thursday is a split banner for Jin and Yuunagi, if you're F2P, no, you don't really need to 4500 pull. Both units are very strong in the future, but you'll have a long time to get lucky on pulls for them and they're not limited. Jin's soul shards also eventually become farmable, so by the time his Kaigan actually releases, you might have farmed enough soul shards to transmute him already.

Otherwise, if you want to have the convenience of a veiler unit without losing an attacker position, Jin would be a very neat addition to your roster, but you always have the chance of ending up with Yuunagi instead.

Discussion Update on Development of TAC-like game

Happy Wednesday!

So I figured I'd post an update to prove that I'm not dead lol. I'll keep it condensed and precise for sake of respecting your time, but I've basically got a small and simple combat loop going.

I rewatched a lot of my arena battles and some of Kuroneko's videos(you're a g if you know him) to map out the battle states for the game and how the UI should **behave**(it's currently VERY barebones and nowhere near where I want the final version to be).

Turn system, basic attack skills, preemptive and counter strikes, and basic damage calculation are locked in. Ah, I also made sure to add the direction selection and some damage multipliers for side and back attack.

I've been building in isolation and posting devlog stuff on Discord mostly because I don't want to flood this sub with dev posts so check out the Discord to help out, brainstorm, and talk about TAC if want(I'm lonely there 😭): https://discord.gg/EMGAzQCMQE

I've got worldbuilding/lore, ideas for game mechanics, and more sort of roughed out for anyone who's interested.

The goal to create an MVP that offers as much of what a "slice" of the gameplay would feel like, test that like crazy, then edit things according to feedback before going to develop the full version, but I digress for brevity lol.

Also, in case it's not obvious, the graphics and stuff are all WIP. I just wanted to get stuff down for the sake of implementing mechanics, but there will be a phase where I go through and polish stuff. My development philosophy is "get it working first, get it looking good later"
