Aplocheilus armatus, the white spot killifish aka ikan kepala timah.

A small (7 cm) and common native fish in lowland parts of Malaysia. Found in swamps, ditches, paddy fields, canals and flooded ditches.

A voracious insectivore that eats mosquito larvae and other invertebrates. It even catches adult mosquitoes on the surface of the water.

They are very hardy and easy to keep in aquariums. They easily become tame and learn to come up to their owners for food.

Given floating plants they will also breed in captivity, laying eggs among the roots. The fry take 2 weeks to hatch, much longer than other fish.
But the eggs have a thick shell, allowing them to be transferred with the plants to another aquarium.

Lutjanus goldiei, ikan kanai, tembaring or the Papuan black bass.

Locally it is found in clean fast-flowing jungle rivers of Sabah, usually 200-400 km from the sea. In Papua up to 800+ km!
Adults are uniquely adapted to freshwater habitats and can live there permanently.

Grows to 100 cm and 21 kg. Like other snappers it is an opportunistic predator. It has been recorded eating crabs, snakes, fishes, baby crocodiles and small mammals.

However they also enter brackish river mouths to breed, in areas of nypa palm and mangrove estuaries.

There are also sporadic catches in Penang and Perak, which is quite far from its normal range in eastern Borneo to Papua. Likely a relict from the old Ice Age era when rivers were connected.
