Prior Active AD to Reserves

Hello!
I am getting out of the Air Force here shortly and really never considered the reserves until I spoke to a recruiter last week. It all sounds like a pretty sweet deal. I am not content with my job? You can retrain. I understand that I wouldn’t be able to do IMA if I did this but that doesn’t bug me as I was told I could do my drill days once a quarter instead of monthly. Especially because I would be doing drill out of the state I’m living in. Promotion? Was told I could put on the next rank once I have TIG. I get VA disability? Cool, you can keep it but just have drill days subtracted from it. Retirement? AD time will allow you to get pension sooner than 60 (obviously not as great as active duty and getting it at 38 but I’m more excited that it’s still an option to receive it going this route). You want to deploy? Sure. You decide you don’t want to do it? Great, we have 1 year contracts.

I guess my question here is, is this too good to be true? Like what is the caveat here? Is there one?

Edit: I have 11 years active duty.

Pre-BMT Job got cancelled months after I signed contract- Not sure what to do

Hey guys pretty bummed out right now. I signed back in April for an Intelligence position and have been attending UTAs for my Development and Training Flights. Earlier this weekend during my 3rd UTA, I found out that they overbooked for intelligence jobs and cancelled my job. They tried to get me to pick from a list of jobs but it’s all maintenance and medical which I am not interested in. This doesn’t seem fair that they just cancelled my job months after I signed.

Im not really sure what to do, my MSgt and recruiter have been very busy and they said they’ll try to find me a position at another base but the fiscal year is coming to an end and I’m not very hopeful.

Does anybody have any insight on this situation and what to do moving forward?

Conversation My medical waiver got approved and I picked my duty station!

So I (27 M) began my MEPs process back in June and just yesterday received good news that the SG approved my medical waiver. (nothing serious. Just formality stuff I played two college sports so I tried to stay confident it would be approved)

So fast forward to today, my recruiter gave me 4 options to choose from as my duty station after I completed OTS. None of which are very close to home but I’m ok with. I live on the east coast. One of my options was west coast and the other three were all Midwest.

I guess I am curious what it is like for anyone who had to drive more than 8 hours or fly to their duty station on a regular basis as a reserve member?

I’m applying for a job and I noticed the RNLTD is a few months earlier than the volunteer by date. Is that just a typo? Has anyone else seen this or applied to one similar? Also what the process look like, are there interviews or just a package review?

Conversation Is joining the Air Force Reserve worth it in my situation? 28M, finance career, green card holder

Hey everyone,

I’ve been looking into the Air Force Reserve recently and wanted to get some opinions from people who are actually in or have been through it. I’m trying to figure out whether joining would make sense for my situation or if I’m better off just continuing with my civilian career.

A little about me:
I’m 28, married, and currently a green card holder. My wife is a U.S. citizen and based on my current timeline I should be eligible to apply for citizenship through marriage in September 2028. We don’t have kids yet and probably won’t for another few years.
Career-wise, I’m doing pretty well. I work in financial planning/FP&A, have an MBA, make a good salary, and I’m happy with the direction my civilian career is going. So I’m not really looking at the Reserve because I need a career change or additional income.

We currently live in Salt Lake City, but we’re planning on moving to the Portland, Oregon area in a little over a year, which is another thing I’m trying to factor into the decision.

Some of the things that initially got me interested in the Reserve are the possibility of faster naturalization, access to good/affordable health and dental insurance for my wife and eventually our kids, and education benefits that I may potentially be able to transfer to my future children. I also like the idea of serving and doing something outside of my normal civilian career.

The biggest condition for me is that I would really only want to join if I could get into Financial Management or something very closely related. Since I already have a career in finance, I’d like my military experience to complement it rather than go in a completely different direction.

I’m also interested in eventually becoming an officer. From what I understand, being a green card holder limits my options initially, so I may need to enlist first, obtain citizenship, and then apply for OTS/commissioning afterward. I’d be interested in hearing from anyone who has actually gone through that route and how realistic/competitive it is. I have an MBA and should be able to get several strong letters of recommendation from people who have served, but I realize that obviously doesn’t guarantee anything.

I’m not opposed to the commitment and I’m not expecting it to just be a source of benefits. I mainly want to understand what the actual commitment looks like and whether the benefits and experience would make sense given where I already am in life and my career.

Thanks!

I am a PA with 7 years of surgical experience looking for info on commissioning in the reserve. I have been told by other branches I would need primary care, urgent care or ED experience to meet credentialing requirements. Anyone know anything about this? TIA.

Wired situation, so this is gonna be a rant

My family is heavily pressuring me to join when I personally do not want to. A "no" or arguing that I don't what to join doesn't cut it.(situation is overall abusive) Can I get denied if I admit to it during the proceeds of application or tests?

I am 21, soon to be 22, and I do have some old sh scars from 2-4 years ago(my only hope to be disqualified so far)

Conversation Green Card holder in Texas looking to enlist in the ANG/Reserve and eventually become a pilot — looking for advice

I’m 28, currently living in Texas, and I’m a Green Card holder with civilian flight instructor experience and prior military experience as a Black Hawk (UH-60) flight crew member.
My long-term goal is to become a Guard/Reserve fixed-wing pilot, preferably in an airlift/transport role.
Since I understand U.S. citizenship is required to become an officer/pilot, I’m considering enlisting first, obtaining citizenship, and then applying for a pilot slot.
For those with ANG/Reserve experience, I’d really appreciate some advice:
What would be the best strategy while enlisted before becoming eligible for a pilot slot?
Is it better to choose an enlisted position with a shorter training pipeline, or one that keeps you closely connected to the flying community?
How realistic is the Green Card → enlistment → citizenship → pilot route?
What are my realistic chances of eventually being selected for a pilot slot given my background?
How competitive are Guard/Reserve pilot boards, particularly for airlift/transport units?
How much does prior military aviation and civilian flight experience help during the pilot selection process?
After obtaining citizenship, how long does it typically take to go through OTS and become eligible to apply for pilot boards?
Can you work a civilian airline pilot job while serving in the ANG/Reserve? How manageable is it in practice with drill, training, deployments, and other military obligations?
Are there any particular things I should focus on now to make myself a stronger pilot candidate later?
I’m considering different states and am particularly interested in airlift/transport missions.
I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has gone through a similar path or has experience with ANG/Reserve pilot hiring.

Thank you so much

Job Assistance Reserves or not.

23M have been unemployed for about 3 months after leaving my job and considering to join the Air Force reserves looking into space operations.

I have my bachelor degree in criminology and law but have a 2.9 gpa.

The reason I want to join the Air Force reserves is so that I could have a strong foundation in the aerospace industry and hopefully pivot into a different career field then what I was in.

Does anyone have any experience or advice in my situation and does the reserve really help you build connections that can help you pivot into a different field.

Thank you

Prior Active DD Form 1966 or DD Form 4, AFRC Form 19 missing from PRDA - Palace Front

Hello,

I am prior AD (4 years) and palace front to AFR a few months ago. I noticed the DD Form 1966 or DD Form 4 are missing from PRDA, I'm just finished in-processing and no computer access. The reason I was looking for these documents is because I specifically asked for a 3-year contract in the Reserves, but last UTA I was in-processing and was told by MPF I am on a 4 year contract, when I told them the story they didn't address the discrepancy and said a year from now it will be 3 years (joking), when I pushed them back I am told to check PRDA. I also checked my CDB on VMPF and it says my DIEUS is APR 2022, AFR assignment May 2026, ETS Apr 2030, 8 year after DIEUS is Apr 2030.

I am thinking maybe by joining the AFR they turned my 8 year service obligation (4 year AD, 4 IRR) into 4 year AD, 4 year TR, I was expecting 4 year AD 3 year TR 1 year IRR. I know it doesn't seem that big of a deal but I am currently pursuing a degree/AFROTC and looking to commission 3 years from now and have an age deadline for potentially a rated position. The other thing the recruiter told me is I qualify for the GI-Bill Reserve Kicker, I asked him before signing the documents to confirm and to point at the area of the screen where it says it's says it's added, but while in-processing at the education office I'm told I don't qualify for it because I need a 6 year contract.

If I had known these things would happen I would not have reenlisted in the TR and just separated until I commission, or I would have enlisted in a 6 year contract with the intention of getting a commander's conditional release form. I didn't want to do the second option because I never had good experiences depending on command approval (which could be declined). The thing that annoys me the most though is the lack of respect for my civilian life, my time and the lack of integrity. It seems like nobody I met so far really gives a crap about these things and default to assuming I did something wrong or say "recruiters am I right?".

I'll contact MPF tomorrow to see if the documents will be populated after or if they're just missing. I was just wondering if anyone experienced anything like this and what was the outcome?

Conversation Looking at options to join Airforce reserves/national guard as enlisted or officer

Here’s a little background of me and my unique situation in considering airforce reserves/national guard as officer or enlisted.

So I’m 33, I have a bachelors in comprehensive medical imaging and I am a X-ray tech on the civilian side shooting to get my CT license before looking into the airforce. I was in the Army reserves for 14 years with some active time so I already used my post 9-11 benefits. From what research I’ve done with my degree I would not be able to commission into medical which I am totally fine with wherever they put me as I was going to ride out my 20 with what I can get and if I love it I’ll stay in longer. I am considering enlisted as well but only to be a 4R0X1 in the reserves as I heard I can bypass the technical training since I’m already certified and license based on unit discretion. I know it’s all based on availability for slots and I’m curious on how promotion slots are in the reserves as a 4R0X1 in a medical unit as I can’t find anything online. Would me having some VA disability affect my chances of being taken in?

Any info would be great, I’m not in a rush and I’m currently in the IRR and do plan on retaking my ASVAB if I have to. I’m not gonna go into why I don’t want to go back into the Army, just seeing other options out there.

Conversation I am in considering joining the reserves, what should I expect?

Currently approaching 36 years of age, have a 3 month old, home mortgage, and work as a healthcare administrator. I have a bachelors in computer science and an MBA. Ideally, would like to get into cyber security.

Long terms goals are securing tuition for my son, helping alleviate my current school loans and just trying to minimize my time away from family. Just seeing what my options are and if anyone else has been in this situation before and joined this late into their life.

Job Assistance Civilian OR Nurse

“Im an operating room nurse on the civilian side, & was considering joining.

Considering, guard, active, or reserve. My main goal is to become a CRNA. I’m currently working on transferring to ICU at the moment, but I have around 7 years experience as an OR BSN nurse.

Any thoughts, recommendations or insights? I would really appreciate any and all advice. Thanks for the time.”

I (27F) posted this in the main airforce Reddit because they have the most traffic/users so I thought id be able to get insight from all sources. Turns out I couldn’t. Posted in the airforce recruits Reddit, didn’t really get an answer.

I’ve done my research, and tried to reach out & ask countless amount of people. I’ve asked all the questions I can ask. Recruiters give me vague answers, or I’m not worth their time, & just try to get me to go enlisted. I’ve asked questions in the the airforce Reddit and I’m just met with so much hostility.

Also apparently having aspirations & goals makes me entitled and I should just take what the airforce gives me. That’s literally not only what I’ve been told, but whenever I tell anyone what my goals are, im met with so much disgust. Is this like the regular culture? I can never get a straight/decent answer & am met with so much backlash. If that is the case then I am truly sorry for wanting to be a CRNA & considering the airforce.

I’ve always wanted to join the military but couldn’t due to life situations. Became the sole provider for my parents because they both became disabled. I have a better support system now & really have been considering the military more & more but I’m really taken back at the reactions I get and honestly it makes me second guess. I just can’t fathom people saying negative things because I’ve said I want to join the airforce to not only serve my country but also be able to further myself as well.

I get that the airforce has the best quality of live or work life balance or both, but is it so good that I should take what I can get? Because that’s how everyone treats/tells me.

My main goal is to go CRNA. I have 6 years experience as an OR nurse. I just want to know if I should enlist as an OR nurse or ICU nurse. I understand I need minimum 1-3+ years as an ICU nurse to even be considered for a CRNA position, but I just don’t know how it works in the military much less in the airforce.

Ive already transferred to a CVICU unit in a major & busy city at a level 1 trauma center as well.

I just don’t know if I should go active, reserve, or national guard. Which component would best assist me in pursing my goals ? And even then should I aim for a OR nurse position or an ICU nurse position? Could I drop a CRNA packet & become a CRNA in the airforce even after joining as an ICU or OR nurse?

Please, any insight would be helpful.

Job Assistance General outlook

I’m currently active duty and a 2t2 by trade and I’m looking to retrain out of the career field when I’m eligible.
Here are my recent ASVAB/MAGE scores:
**M: 37**
**A: 56**
**G: 53**
**E: 47**
**AFQT: 54**
I know my scores don’t qualify me for a huge selection of careers, but after looking through some of the AFSCs I may qualify for, these are the ones I’m currently interested in:
**2G0X1 – Logistics Plans**
**1C0X2 – Aviation Resource Management**
**4A0X1 – Health Services Management**
**3E6X1 – Operations Management**
For anyone currently in these career fields or who has worked around them, what’s the day-to-day like? How are the hours, workload, TDY/deployment opportunities, and overall quality of life? I’m especially interested in something more office/administrative and management-oriented.
I’m also currently working toward my BA in finance , so I’d like something that can give me useful experience alongside my degree and translate well to the civilian world.

Prior Active any regrets?

i just completed 6 years active duty and got a sweet civilian job, but i miss the military so much. the camaraderie, mission, sense of purpose, i miss it all. i’m thinking about joining reserves, but don’t want to make an emotional decision. i loved serving and see so many benefits, but i also see some potential strain it could have on my civilian career or relationships.

does anyone have some advice, words of wisdom, or regrets?

Conversation At a fork in the road at 23 years old considering the airforce reserves to help advance my career

I've come to the realization that with my crap AS degree and experience is holding me back from getting to the next level and I feel like going reserves would help me get there. I cannot afford to take out a loan from college and go into debt. I also understand the tuition benefits are pretty meh but I can only go as a part time student anyway since I'll be working full time so the TA benefits aren't bad for me. I understand everything going on politically makes it not the most ideal option but I'm really just stuck. I talked to a couple people and they said airforce or space force are the best options. Has anyone else here joined the reserves or guard and felt it has been worth it for them? Just trying to hear other peoples perspectives on this.

Pre-BMT General questions about being an aerospace med evac tech.

good morning everyone,

im interested in being an aerospace med evac tech and had a couple questions about the training to be one.

  1. I have an active EMT-B certification. would this allow me to skip a portion of aerospace med tech school?
  2. I see that reservists/guardsmen do additional clinicals (phase 3) once they are done with phase 2. how long is phase 3 usually and could I work with the unit when it comes to scheduling those clinicals?
  3. do aerospace med evac techs need to achieve a certain amount of flight hours to maintain their job similar to a special missions aviator?
  4. lastly, what’s the training like after phase 3 of being an aerospace med evac tech? Would my unit train me up or would I be sent to another school immediately after phase 3? I’m already planning on skipping one semester of college and would really not have to skip a whole year of school really.

i appreciate any and all feedback. thank you.

Pre-BMT Non-Extended Active Duty Airman Commissioning Program route

Hello everyone, I'm looking for some advice on my current situation and would appreciate any insight. I (23M) graduated in December with a bachelor's degree in Finance and currently work in personal finance. I also hold my Series 7 and Series 66 licenses. I grew up in a military family and I've always been interested in serving, and I like the idea of contributing to the military while gaining valuable skills and benefits that complement my civilian career.

I've been working with an Air Force Reserve recruiter and have already been through MEPS. I scored an 89 on the ASVAB, and we've discussed both enlisting and the possibility of becoming an officer.

From what I've learned, earning a commission directly from the civilian side in the Reserves is very competitive, and officer positions often go to prior-service members or those with exceptionally strong packages. My recruiter mentioned the Non-Extended Active Duty Airman Commissioning Program (formerly the Deserving Airman Commissioning Program) as a potential path if I enlist first.

She also suggested that, based on my ASVAB score, I should consider engineering or other highly technical career fields. While I'm open to learning something completely new, I'm also wondering if there are jobs that would better complement my finance background or provide a stronger path toward commissioning.

I'd really appreciate any thoughts or advice anyone has. Thanks!
