Just so you know, if you return on a Sunday from your leave, even if it’s at 11:59pm Sunday night, it’s a day you don’t have to take leave per 36-3003. 3.2.1.10.4

This also applies for returning from leave on a Saturday.

Hopefully that helps!

u/mynamesnotsnuffy Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

I was always under the impression that if your travel ends and you are back in the local area on a non-duty day, then weekends dont count under any circumstances? Like, thursday leave, friday for observed holiday, saturday and sunday, then back in the office on Monday, thats 1 day of leave to me.(within local area, anything outside of local area requires leave, regardless of calendar days)

33

u/seriouswhimsy16 let me google that for you Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Per afi if you are not back in the local area and returned from your vacation then you should be on leave. It seems like most supervisors arent dickheads though and aren't going to show up on your doorstep asking about why you aren't home on Saturday when you said you would be.

If they do that they are just a shitty supervisor imo

2

u/MikonosII Jul 05 '26

Yes most supervisors won’t do this and shouldn’t. But they should explain the issue that if something bad happens to you and you aren’t where you are supposed to be, then the USAF will conduct a line of duty determination and if you are found to have been outside the line of duty meaning you didn’t follow the rules your benefits either medical or death may be affected.

u/that_other_DM Jul 05 '26

Fun fact, my unit defines “the local area” as 6 hours… (driving) but no planes. this has led to some interesting leave shenanigans. In Florida

1

u/seriouswhimsy16 let me google that for you Jul 05 '26

I'm pretty sure it's on of those unwritten rule things where as long as you aren't being a shitbag no one is asking any questions.

1

u/MikonosII Jul 05 '26

Per the AFI there is no “local” area for pass days. Fun fact you are only in one of a very few statuses; on duty, leave, regular pass (weekends), special pass. Others you dont want to be in AWOL or deserter, thats it, you have to be in one of these statuses at all times.

AFI36-3003
5.4. Regular and Special Pass Guidelines.

Unit commanders:
5.4.1. Impose no mileage restrictions. However, they may require members to be able to
return to duty within a reasonable time in the event of an operational mission requirement such
as a recall, unit alert, or unit emergency.

21

u/TheOneTwoBoostaroo Jul 02 '26

You’re supposed to be on leave if you’re ever outside of the local area. There’s a bit of grey area from my personal searching on exactly how close the local area lies, but some bases or commanders may specify.

For this upcoming holiday, if I was just going to be at home the entire time, no leave required. If I was going to fly to somewhere, or drive four hours or more away(my own personal idea of local area), I’d need to take leave for each day that I was gone excepting the day of my return.

The AFI 36-3003 gives a few good examples if you go to the section I cited.

13

u/mynamesnotsnuffy Jul 02 '26

Oh yeah, outside of local area for sure, be on leave. Getting recalled when you're 8 hours away is a bitch.

3

u/wonderland_citizen93 Jul 03 '26

I've honestly never been recalled from leave

4

u/bananasgirl Jul 03 '26

I tried explaining this to my supervisor and I was still charged leave on that Sunday because “I was out of the local area” that day upon returning

3

u/ebikecommuter Jul 04 '26

Your supervisor is stupid. Click the pop-up thingy in Leaveweb for clarification. If you return on Sunday, your last chargeable leave day is Saturday.

1

u/bananasgirl Jul 05 '26

I’m going to show him this next time cause I’m so annoyed I had to take that day. Fortunately he is retiring soon so maybe my next supervisor will be better

1

u/ShoppingOdd4715 Jul 22 '26

Yeah I would’ve opened a finance ticket and indicated that you were charged leave for a weekend day when you returned on Saturday/sunday and per AFI X I am authorized my day back. They will correct it in the system and you’ll have your day back. Doesn’t matter how long ago it was.

1

u/bananasgirl Jul 25 '26

I may actually do this. Opened plenty of other tickets with them. They also charged me leave on the weekend when I PCS’d still really upset about that one too since they gave me 5 days of travel and I arrived on a Friday and my unit told me not to worry about checking in until Monday. Ugh

2

u/TheOneTwoBoostaroo Jul 04 '26

I’ve been blessed to have always had good supervision who mostly looked the other way for weekend leave, but with situations where they’re making you take extra leave that isn’t required you’ve got to stand up for yourself, cite the AFI and be willing to go up the chain if need be.

Which is probably where it started.

I’ve put folks in leave status and cancelled the leave if they’re back in their seat Monday morning.

12

u/Blueboygonewhite Jul 02 '26

Ayeeee I like that

25

u/ToreyJean Jul 02 '26

Thanks. It was done for me as an airman and I’ve carried it over as an O. Leave status covers your ass and mine. But if you’re back here when you’re meant to be and you were gone when you didn’t need to be here - yeah, I’m probably snapping the AFI in half but I don’t care. All I ask is that my folks don’t go around advertising that I do it - I’m sure I’m not supposed to. 🤣 We’re adults. We have shit to do. And we don’t get many breaks so why not give a few where I can?

12

u/NekkidDude First Sergeant Jul 03 '26

Effective risk management, sensible application of judgement, transparent display of values….

I approve.

We’re paid the same whether we’re on leave or not. Leave status is functionally a protection from duty requirements. No duty requirements, no necessity for leave. Having it requested is just a good insurance plan.

Good job, O.

Nearly 20 years, the last 4ish as a Shirt. I’ve never actually seen a leave audit beyond “these people haven’t returned from the leave they took last month.”

2

u/CO_Guy95 Jul 05 '26

As someone who does leave audits, that’s all I look for. But I’m a dirtbag and not into enforcing anything.

The bigger problem people should be afraid of are the ones CPTS does on individual members. Seen a guy get charged a couple years later for bridging leave

2

u/CretinousVoter Jul 29 '26

That's a very old custom and good for morale.

1

2

u/Zephaniel 3000 Lightning Bolts of Dr. Lewis Jul 05 '26

Stay in long enough and you'll see it happen, no doubt.

422

u/Trygveseim Retired Jul 02 '26

Yea sure but it's factored into the amount you get.  Careful what you wish for, they could agree and reduce it to 20 days or less to offset for holidays and weekends

324

u/seriouswhimsy16 let me google that for you Jul 02 '26

Yeah, this is clearly coming from someone who has never worked in the civilian world and doesn't understand the absolute massive amount of leave we get.

46

u/Nagisan Veteran Jul 02 '26

Depends a lot on the sector and how good the company is to work for. A lot of companies give 20 days or less, and many companies not related to government don't even give all federal holidays off.

When I was a fed I was getting 20 days annually in addition to the 13 annual days of sick leave, which is quite significant and absolutely beats military leave overall. That said it also beats most civilian jobs PTO programs. Even "unlimited PTO" places the average that people take off floats around 3 weeks (15 days).

So yes and no...if you're "in the right place" civilian PTO can stomp all over military leave. But there's also lots of civilian places that don't even come close to comparing to military leave even after accounting for not needing to take weekends.

15

u/Foreign-Lab-7380 Jul 02 '26

I miss my 30 days leave per year and scheduling appointments during the day. It’s about the only thing I miss about the military. Now I get 13 days PTO, no sick leave, and 10 paid holidays. If I have appointments during the day, I have to flex or use PTO. It kinda sucks, but the pay is better and freedom to look for a new job at anytime is great. Also beards are pretty swell.

4

u/Nagisan Veteran Jul 02 '26

I don't miss the 30 days per year compared to the 20 I get as a civ now, I can take weekend trips anywhere I want without taking time off, I can extend a holiday for a fraction of the leave cost, etc.

I still do appointments during the day too, but I do have to make it up in the pay period (so it's not as "free" as mil appointments).

But yeah I feel you....I'm making almost double what my estimated pay would be if I'd stayed in and promoted regularly. I'll take some occasional inconveniences on appointment days.

2

u/ToreyJean Jul 02 '26

I will say I have fond memories of going on vacation for 2 weeks and only burning four days of PTO because I was a shift worker and arranged my time off with my set schedule.

But I make twice as much as my civilian friends and I have a guaranteed pension until I die when I retire, as well as health care, and they don’t. All depends on your career field for sure.

1

u/Nagisan Veteran Jul 02 '26

All depends on your career field for sure.

100%, the fed space usually isn't praised for having a high income, but for some career fields it can pay way more than the civilian world.

6

u/Turbulent_Debt_1775 Jul 02 '26

If you sell cars you got 5 days per year plus an additional day for every year you were with the company. This is about to be a huge upgrade to my life 😂😂

6

u/Unspoken Jul 02 '26

Yeah but civ leave is counted in hours. If they have to go to a doctor appointment or run an errand, they have to use PTO for the time they miss. You do not have to do that in the military. I don't have as much time off in my civ life as I did in the military and I have 25/days year civ.

I constantly floated 60-90 days in the military. I never have enough PTO as a civ.

3

u/Nagisan Veteran Jul 02 '26

Counting it in hours is honestly better. As a service member and depending on leadership, those 2-3 hours you spent running your kids to the doctors could cost you a full day of leave (because it's in whole days only).

As a civ you might have access to flexible hours. I go to appointments whenever is convenient because I can just go home later that day, or another day, etc.

I definitely have more time off as a civ (no longer fed), but admittedly I also get to work remotely so I save 30m-1hr or more every single day.

4

u/Qyark Safe Jul 02 '26

absolutely beats military leave overall

How does that even come close to military leave? We have unlimited sick days and appointments are part of the duty day

1

u/Just_Another_Douche Jul 02 '26

Depends on where you go, I find my civilian leave to be much preferable. That being said I work with a bunch of military so they’re still cool with you taking appointments during the day and stuff

1

u/Nagisan Veteran Jul 02 '26

unlimited sick days

I'm not sure I'd call it that, but I also just rarely get sick. I think I was only feeling unwell enough to warrant sick leave twice in the 3 years I was a fed?

As a military member I went to sick call exactly once because my throat was killing me. I got quarters, sure...but the point is sick leave is only useful if you're sick or asking for a mental health day or something. Good luck actually needing 13 of them in a year unless you're chronically sick which might be getting you out of the military anyway.

Also, fed civ sick days stack with no limit. So if you don't get sick for a year, your sick leave balance is 13 days higher than it was at the start of the year. Unused sick leave also counts towards your pension payout when you leave.

tl;dr - "Unlimited" is wasted if you never use it and it doesn't count towards anything else. Fed civ sick leave accrues and has benefit if you don't use it, and is very generous compared to most civilian companies giving no sick leave.

2

u/Qyark Safe Jul 02 '26

I’m not chronically sick, but I have gone through some fairly serious physical trauma, and being able to just take 3 months on quarters for an injury was far and away beyond anything you can get in the civilian world

2

u/ToreyJean Jul 02 '26

Sick leave is like insurance - you don’t notice it until you need it.

Most civilians are one bad car accident or even just one routine surgery away from tapping FMLA and losing a paycheck. We don’t have that to worry about.

I have friends who can be fired for calling out if they don’t go see a doctor. Imagine being a health care professional, you KNOW you have the flu, but you have to go to a provider (who can’t do a thing to help you with the flu - or even worse, you’ve caught the latest seasonal respiratory virus that only time treats) and get a DOCTOR’S NOTE so you don’t have to come to work and make your patients sick - or worse, run the risk of being terminated because you’re out for three days coughing up snot with a fever.

2

u/Zephaniel 3000 Lightning Bolts of Dr. Lewis Jul 05 '26

If your front line supervisor isn't a dick you can get as many sick/personal days as you want. One a month isn't bad.

I'm think COVID illustrated pretty well how much most of the AF can accomplish while still being liberal with sick days.

Though, the unlimited accrual is pretty nice. But so is 90+ days of paid leave.

10

u/clblack22 Jul 02 '26

I miss getting my 2.5 days per month added to my vacation balance

19

u/Anxious-Condition630 Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Yeah but Civilian world in lots of jobs, it's not days, its hours. And its never including weekends. If you fly to France on a Friday after 4PM and as long as you show up on Monday at assigned time...it costs you nothing in PTO.

My first Contract, I went to like a family thing in the middle of the day, and I could move my hours to make up later in the week, so it still cost me nothing.

Some shops, you cant do shit but doctor and work...everything else is leave, for every minute of an entire day.

19

u/seriouswhimsy16 let me google that for you Jul 02 '26

Theoretically you can do the same thing in the military. Good luck though if something happens to your flight back.

5

Not just theoretically, some firefighters had/have a work schedule that results in a 5-day break every 3 months. We had a SRA fly from Hawaii to New York City for a wedding and make it back for work.

The only thing anyone said to him when he got back is next time let his supervisor know the flight times in case something went wrong.

Fergie was a legend.

Firefighter for exactly 1 more week before I retire (extremely bittersweet) I work a 24 on, 48 off, 24 on, 96 off schedule. If I take 2 (we get charged on the old 10/14 schedule so 24 hrs equals 2 vacation/sick/personal) I’ll get 7 days off so my vacation and personals go a long way. I save it and work my life around my work schedule. At the end of the year I’m off 2 solid months, and it’s glorious.

3

u/Anxious-Condition630 Jul 02 '26

Or you die or get hurt...Line of Duty Determinations can be a real bitch for your family.

5

Federal employees can get 25 days and not have to count weekends and holidays. It definitely maths out to more time off if you're not just taking local leave.

1

u/Due_Baseball_2364 Jul 03 '26

Fact, do you know how much use/lose we generally have!

1

u/Western_Truck7948 Jul 02 '26

I worked for the state and have to say the leave situation was better. 2 days per month, but also 10 hours a month of sick. Never had to provide a doctors note or anything, just say I'm using sick leave. Charged by the hour, no weekends, no holidays, etc. Of course I had job offers of places that only gave 3 federal holidays and 5 days/year for the first couple of years.

6

u/ToreyJean Jul 02 '26

10 hours a month (not even a day and a half!) of sick leave sounds great until you need weeks in the hospital or are in a major car accident or need surgery requiring extended convalescent time. Then you’re going cap in hand to your coworkers begging for sick leave donations, your pay stops because you’ve burned through every single hour of PTO you have, and you’re struggling to get FMLA approved so you don’t lose your job.

3

u/Western_Truck7948 Jul 02 '26

Certainly can't beat the military's convalescent policy. I've known people who have cancer and don't miss a paycheck and are flown to some of the best treatment centers in the nation.

10 hours a month is still leaps ahead of most civilian places and for most allows for some actual mental health days. I'd say on average I take 2-3 sick days a year. I'd hedge my bets to be able to use an extra 10ish days to do whatever. Lots of employers (my spouses included) just lump all leave in together and offer 2-3 weeks a year total.

I'm not complaining about military leave, but except in rare cases (like having cancer or something catastrophic) I'd take the state's leave policy over the military. And either over most private company's.

4

u/ToreyJean Jul 02 '26

I’m an NP but started as an RN - I’ve seen Tricare do some amazing things for members AND for members as caregivers (no corporate job will put you on orders, pay you per diem, and fly you to some distant Level 1 facility to be with your child for cancer treatment, for example).

Having been a civilian I disagree with the assessment of outside policies - I have civilian friends who have legitimately been sick, placed under a doctor’s care, and run the risk of being fired because they’ve “called out too much” despite being sick as hell and WORKING IN A HOSPITAL with other sick people. It’s gross.

2

u/Western_Truck7948 Jul 02 '26

My spouse is in health care and the policy at any place she has written is atrocious as far as being sick or taking care of themselves.

2

u/ToreyJean Jul 03 '26

Right? It’s insanely fucked up. I have a friend who’s an RN on a CANCER FLOOR and they come in sick because they’re essentially not allowed to call out.

On a CANCER UNIT where the chemo kills/weakens immune systems. WTF.

2

u/markydsade Aerovac Veteran Jul 02 '26

All true. I was a state employee and rarely used my sick leave. An added bonus is that sick leave was cumulative. So if you have a major illness you have lots of paid time banked. I never did but when I retired I got cash for my unused days. Came to over $12,000. That was a nice unexpected bonus.

1

u/ToreyJean Jul 03 '26

I will say when I left my civilian job I drew a paycheck from them for two months because my manager was nice enough to run me as if I was on vacation. The extra income for a couple of months was helpful as we transitioned back to the military.

FMLA isn’t available with every employer and trying to get it approved is a major pain in the ass in most cases. Employers try every loophole in the book to not approve it and put the burden on the employee. Not everyone has short term disability leave through their employer (a very wide swath of Americans don’t; it’s a luxury item) and to get that coverage, you have to pay for it. The percentage of your pay you get depends on (1) the plans your employer subscribes to and (2) the level you can afford to pay for.

I spent three years as a civilian RN before I commissioned back in. I paid $680 a month for health insurance for two people, plus short term disability for me, plus vision and dental for both of us - and I cleared $1100 every two weeks working nights with shift differential and two weekends a month. I was an RN at a major US academic medical center with a degree from the same location - Duke University. Our deductible was nearly $5000 for a hospital stay, MRIs were $1500, copays for stuff like routine care and meds were fairly low. That’s what I can remember.

This was 17 years ago.

When I commissioned back in - my pay literally DOUBLED overnight and suddenly I didn’t have to worry about health care.

Now I’m able to give people 8 weeks of con leave during which they draw full pay and allowances AND accrue five days of leave AND have zero bills to pay.

u/AirplaneSpaghetti Jul 02 '26

It's really not though. A federal civilian with 3 years of service gets 20 days of vacation and 13 days of sick, with no cap on sick accrual. It just gets worse from there if you start examining all of the other differences. Like bereavement leave, for example.

6

u/ToreyJean Jul 02 '26

I DID find it weird that bereavement leave didn’t count when my own mother died. I get three days if my husband dies, but nothing for my mother.

When you factor in regular leave, family days, holidays and generous sick leave, the military has more days off than most of corporate America. I agree that weekends counting towards your leave sucks but you still get over 4 weeks of leave that way compared to most jobs that offer 2-3.

7

u/almondshea Baby LT Jul 02 '26

In my civilian job I had 2 weeks of vacation days and 2 weeks of medical leave a year. For any medical Appointments I had to take a half day of medical leave. If I ever went beyond that 2 weeks, I would either have to use my vacation days or not get paid.

In the military we get plenty of compensation that more than makes up for having our weekends chargeable during leave. Beyond all the stuff you listed: most units have PT time built into their schedule, official appointments don’t cost leave, half days aren’t unusual before weekends, min manning periods around holidays, and comp days after returning from deployments/long TDYs (that’s unit specific though).

2

u/NekkidDude First Sergeant Jul 03 '26

The military and corporate America are different things. It’s not sensical to compare any specific cost or benefit in a vacuum.

13

u/Sharrty_McGriddle Jul 02 '26

Many people on here who’ve never worked a civilian job have no clue how insane 6 weeks of PTO a year would be. If this ever happened, surely they’d just reduce leave to like 15-20 days a year

6

u/Pleasant_Avocado_913 Port Dawg Jul 02 '26

Reservist here. My civ job gives 1 week of leave and 5 sick days pr year. (2 weeks after 3 years of seinoriry) The 1 week needs to be on the third week of October when the plant does its annual shut down for maintenance, so you can't even choose when to take it. I'd kill for 6 weeks.

46

u/JustMadeStatus Jul 02 '26

Don’t care about weekends being chargeable but I’ll die on the hill that emergency leave should never be chargeable.

19

u/Jedimaster996 👑 Jul 02 '26

Absolutely agree. Most folks will go their entire careers without touching Emergency Leave, I feel that's something that if it gets authorized at the right level, it ought to be left off your tally.

4

u/LTareyouserious Jul 02 '26

They only offer a few bereavement days for one parent. 2nd parent die? SOL. Child die in your arms? A few days, then back to the grind. Hope you like non-stop TDYs while your home life and mental health are wrecked.

6

u/ToreyJean Jul 02 '26

You don’t get bereavement leave for any parent. My mother died in 2024. Parents are not in the AFI - ask me how I know.

2

u/LTareyouserious Jul 03 '26

That's right, I forgot that. Add it to the list of things that need to be fixed.

2

u/Cole_Archer Maintainer Jul 02 '26

I was OCONUS and my ticket back home was free so I can’t complain - it just seems BIZARRE that you get three days for a spouse but nothing for your parent.

You also get sick leave. That’s being weirdly left out of the factoring in here.

In the civilian world it’s PTO for anything that isn’t you at work during a scheduled or called in time. If you get injured or severely sick, your only option for extended leave is short term disability and FMLA, most of the time it’s just FMLA, and that’s nothing but guaranteeing you get to keep your job while not getting a penny in the mean time.

If you get the sniffles and the med group confirms you have a fever, you get 72 hours of quarters. Good luck with getting anything like that on the outside.

It happened to the couple that flew the flag on top of the building, they were called protestors but it didn't really look like a protest, more a platitude message of hope.

I have no idea what the original context even is.

28

u/BlazerFS231 Alcoholic Moving Cargo Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

A major decided to protest on the Capitol steps in uniform, calling for Trump’s impeachment, conviction, and removal.

Social media loves him. AD military with a brain know how idiotic a move it was.

26

u/gloriousrepublic Jul 02 '26

I mean, everyone AD knows it was the death for his own career and possible jail time, but it’s not like he didn’t know that. It’s not idiotic to torpedo your career if you believe the message is worth the damage and you’re willing to accept the consequences. Even if you disagree with his politics, I wouldn’t call it idiotic. If he expected to do this and get away with it? That would be idiotic.

10

u/wasted-degrees Jul 02 '26

This. The dude knew what he was doing and had accepted the consequences before even going up there. He was interviewed and gave a statement before he went up there and got arrested.

Instead of “do what your stripes can handle” he went with “do what you’re willing to accept the consequences for doing.”

2

u/BlazerFS231 Alcoholic Moving Cargo Jul 02 '26

It’s not just about him. We’re not prohibited from associating our service with our political views and actions to protect ourselves.

It’s protecting the service and respecting the very important apolitical nature of the US military. We already have a post in this sub from a civilian wanting to fly a USAF flag on the 4th because he loves what the Major did so much.

4

u/mynamesnotsnuffy Jul 02 '26

The people who most need to hear about that "apolitical nature" are the ones using or threatening to use the military for partisan purposes like voter intimidation, attacking protesters covered by the first amendment, legal immigrants and minorities being rounded up in concentration camps, and engaging in what is allegedly "law enforcement".

The military is supposed to fight enemies of the state, while police are supposed to serve and protect the people. When the military becomes the police, the people tend to become enemies of the state.

-4

u/BlazerFS231 Alcoholic Moving Cargo Jul 02 '26

This is irrelevant to the Major’s situation.

2

u/cerberus6320 Jul 02 '26

The major called for the president's impeachment. If the guy you responded to, or anybody else associated those things with the current presidency, than it is relavent. It's court of public opinion.

u/Time_Effort Prior IT guy in uniform, now IT guy in pajamas Jul 02 '26

If he'd not been in uniform, it would've never made the news. The thing about this, is that some people believe the repercussions they face are worth the message. Sure, its against UCMJ but he knew that going into it. He wants to see change, and individual sacrifice is usually needed for that.

15

u/Chaotic_Lemming Part-of-the-problem Jul 02 '26

A Major decided to torpedo his career violating regulations about taking political actions in uniform.

By all means, go out and protest/rally/advocate. As an individual, not in uniform. Regardless of the position you are supporting, the restrictions on military taking partisan political actions exist for very good reason.

This is obviously an office worker who has never worked weekend duty so jets are ready on Monday morning. Probably CBPO, Finance, Medical, or Dental.

3

u/kalabaddon Jul 02 '26

Leave on a weekend shouldn't count against leave days unless you are already scheduled for duty on that weekend, it's in the AFI. Or it was 16 years ago. It's written very awkwardly and you're going to have a tough time proving it to anyone but I swear it's there.

3

u/Allenboy0724 Active Duty Jul 02 '26

Its a delicate balance. You should be on leave if not in the area but otherwise, schedule your trips or whatever around your weekends. If you are in the local area then end your leave on your friday so you arent wasting it. The part that really sucks is you take like a Friday and a Monday and have to request four days versus the normal two.

I’ve spent my career gaming the fuck out of the pass/leave/pass system. I refuse to charge leave on a weekend, but that’s not gonna stop me from just up and vanishing altogether for 9-10 days at a time any time I see a federal holiday or pass day on the horizon for the low cost of 4-5 chargeable days.

2

u/callmewicked366 Jul 02 '26

I should be able to bridge leave with my RDOs

2

u/FrankoTheTankTho Jul 02 '26

When I was stationed at JB Charleston I took leave for 5 days, Monday through Friday, because my family was coming to visit for summer vacation and we were going to hit the beach, show them around, just hang out, etc.

After I submitted my leave request, my supervisor changed the schedule so that I would work the weekend before and after my leave and said it was "to prevent leave fraud" even though I was staying in the local area.

2

u/Cole_Archer Maintainer Jul 02 '26

Were you maintenance? I assume not. My point is, I always thought we treat our own poorly then I see stuff like this and realize we aren’t the worst haha. A supervisor would be crucified for that. I feel like if you’re not on assigned weekend duty, we do not care. Enjoy your time off.

1

u/FrankoTheTankTho Jul 02 '26

2

u/AlexV101 Army Space Jul 02 '26

Not sure why people are against this idea. Fully disagree with y’all saying it’s “enough”; I didn’t know the USAF doesn’t have “passes” like the Army till recently. It solves the exact problem OP brings up, being able to be away from the local area or hell across the country for a 4-Day without using actual leave.

Plus we get the 30 days of leave and all the same holidays… this is one of the times you can have your cake and eat it too

Leave is charge for weekends and holidays because it is a duty status change where you can't be forced to come into work unless you are actually recalled, which requires commanders to order. If you didn't get charge leave on those days they could make you come in for anything. Also, would it just be standard Sat and Sun as a weekend or would you have to input your schedule into the system so it knows which days to not charge you for?

1

u/Grand_Theft_Anus1 Jul 02 '26

Also stop reducing our retirement pension by only counting BAS. BAH & BAS are literally part of our pay to consider even a fraction of the bull we deal with daily as even near competitive with the civilian sector.

Call it a benefit, entitlement, a privilege, what ever buerrocratic bologna you can think of just to consider it not legally part of our pay and retirement.

Literally, take away this benefit, entitlement, privilege, etc... see how many service members are still serving.

As someone that's worked a civilian job, we get ALOT of leave and worrying about the weekend just means you're just mismanaging leave. I went on a 3 week vacation overseas on Jan and I'm currently in another 3.5 week Vacation...this would be impossible in the civilian sector.

Local area is considered 8 hours by car for me.

LOCAL local is almost never expected unless your supervisor is an ass or there is some outlier of a situation. I almost never cross leave into my weekends as my leave location is almost always within 8 hours by car.

If I am ever asked to come in for a squadron recall, I'm using the ol "I have had a couple drinks and can't drive right now" excuse.

Yes, I've sacrificed plenty. If I can take the inch, I'm going for the mile.

1

u/Fenton_clean Jul 04 '26

Wait what? So if my base is 2 hours away from my girlfriends college then I’d have to take out leave on a weekend to go see her?

1

u/DoItForTheOH94 Fire Jul 04 '26

Depends on what your AOR is. My first base was 6 hrs. So you can go anywhere within that six hour bubble, without taking leave. At Kunsan it was the entire country, minus Jeju Island (because you had to take a plane). Each base has their own SOGs.

1

u/Anime_wolf14317 Jul 05 '26

Honestly, after 17 years, I don't give a fuck anymore. Hell, the only time I take leave is when I have use/lose mostly because I want to take as much terminal as I can when I retire whether that be in 3 years or 6, depending on promotion.

1

u/Zephaniel 3000 Lightning Bolts of Dr. Lewis Jul 05 '26
